I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Just received the Fixed Laptop from HP Tech Center. They fixed the hardware parts for Hinge issue. I personally thank Jenn (Case Manager) for elevating the case and Following up to ensure everything goes smooth. Hats Off! I also thank @george-p, @JeffHelp, @Futoji for the support. This morning, I picked up my laptop to get started with my work day, and was greeted with what sounded like a bit of plastic bouncing around inside my fan (quite disconcerting).  When I took a closer look, it seemed that the casing around the left hinge of the screen had started to break apart and separate, which is where I imagine that piece of plastic in the fan originated. I can squeeze the casing back together, but it only lasts for a couple minutes before reseparating.Unfortunately, my laptop is outside the warranty provided, but I did see numerous similar complaints in this and other forums, so I was wondering a) why this known hinge issue wasn't a part of any recall, and b) what I can do to get it resolved? Being outside the warranty is obviously a bit disappointing, but is there perhaps a kit I can purchase to repair the issue myself before it gets worse, or am I out of luck, essentially? I'll attach a couple images in a moment to illustrate the issue.

There are over 800 hundred complaints online. The 17" touchsmart screen is not supported by proper hinge PSI in the base screw inserts. This product should be recalled.

Problem started two weeks ago. Could not power on the laptop, tried many different power outlets. Purchased a universal Laptop charger/cord and it still didn't work. Removed battery, attached power cord and could boot computer on...put the battery back in but battery would not take a charge even though the battery indicator light was amber and the icon in the Win tool bar displayed: 36% available (plugged in, charging). Clicked the icon and displayed 36%, Calculating... Left laptop turned on overnight with battery in and 8 hours later it was still at 36%. With Laptop turned on, I can remove Laptop power cord and battery will continue operation, depleting the battery but when I reconnect the power cord it does not charge the battery (no green light or amber light).  Bottom line, attached power cord with battery in and get no power (green or amber), period. Remove battery, attach power cord and I can boot up the computer. Ran Systems Test - Battery Check: Primary - Replace (42) and received Failure ID:  QAMPPV-82387T-MFGJXF-C0D703. This failure on a brand new battery just recieved two days ago. Same errors with the original battery.  Attempted a power reset to no avail. I could run laptop using the power cord only but doing this would defeat the purpose of owning a laptop. Running on battery will only deplete battery with no way to recharge it. Help!!! Searched forum for answer to my problem and found no... Read more

Very disappointed with the response from Toshiba over an issue we are having with the Z Series laptops.

Let me explain - I am responsible for the laptops at a large college in the south of the UK. We have round 40 Series laptops and on a large number of them the screws which hold he hinge covers in place have come out and become lost, in many cases the hinge covers have come off and been lost as well. The first thing that crossed out minds was 'interference' by students but as no other screws were found to be lose the only conclusion we can come to is that that there is a design fault and these hinge cover screws have worked lose over time and fallen out.

I am currently working through all our Z Series laptops and I am finding more and more lose or missing screws and additional missing hinge covers. We have bought this to the attention of Toshiba but they will not accept there is an issue - but haven't yet provided a reason why this should be happening in such numbers.

As can be imagined we are not best pleased with their response and would like to hear from anyone who has had the same issue. At over 50.00 GBP to fix each pair of hinges, you can imagine how quickly the costs are rising.

Ok let me cut to the chase: I;ve tried all "normal" test and options to verify what the problem isn't: it's not the battery and not the AC charger .  What I really want to know is whether anyone has solved this problem by replacing the motherboard or changing BIOS. HP has been of no help on this matter, and they actually want me to just buy a new laptop or pay them $350 to let them "fix it".  Two things I find strange are: why have there been no BIOS updates in the 3 years since this laptop was built, and I'm also seeing that there is no download whatsoever for even a reinstall of BIOS; and also, why -- despite the fact that MANY people seem to have had battery/power/charging issues on HP laptops in the past few years (if not longer) -- am I seeing no actual root causes online? I don't want to just throw money at the problem (forgive me, but I'm an engineer), I want to know what's going on and whether I can expect the problem to happen again. I've been through 3 batteries, and 2 chargers and the story is the same: the HP Diagnostics (UEFI?) tell me the battery needs to be replaced.  The battery never gets charged above the charge level it was at when I receive the new battery (70-75% charge for all 3 batteries), and draining the battery to a low level (about 5%) and it doesn't go up.  The laptop is not charging the battery. I get an orange light which tells me it's "trying" to charge the battery, and the behavior is the same for 2 ... Read more

It appears the hinge assembly for my PC has begun to push the case apart, as the top is aluminum and the bottom is plastic, This problem is getting unreasonable. I looked online to see if there was some fix and immediatly found that the problem is pervasive, I'm hoping that there is a way to repair this, because I don't want the case to come completely apart. But, I don't want it to get damaged further, I have always used this PC and it just has out of the blue Started popping apart in the back where the aluminum comes in contact with the hinges. Hopefully even though I am out of the warrenty by about a year there is some fix to this problem, because I have an HP home computer that has worked perfectly for years, while this laptop in less than 2 years the case just starts popping apart. I am about to enroll in college and need a working laptop. So if there is any way to easily fix this please tell me, and If it is fixable at all If any additional information is needed please just ask. I found a picture Of somone with the exact same hinge problem with the back of the case, having the exact same effect on my pc

Had this laptop for 1 year and 5 months, the other day my left hinge just started poping out when I open and close it. It looks and sounds bad, though I can pop it back in, I have a bad feeling it's going to get worse and the other side may start. Of course my warranty just expired 5 months ago, and I've heard other reports of this so I hope I can get this fixed for free since it seems to be a HP design flaw. I use my laptop as a desktop really so I use the HDMI and only used the actual screena  few times, I lift is just enough to hit the power button, but this still happened. I'm not sure how to go about this since HP keeps trying to charge people for this fix. Thanks!

Hello. It seems I have the fairly common hinge issue with my m7-j010dx. When opening and closing the lid, the case around the hinge separates. It's getting bad enough that I avoid moving the screen as much as possible, and carefully pinching the case when moving the screen so as to avoid further damage and/or it popping open entirely and becoming immoble. How do I go about getting this resolved?

Hey all, I'm dealing with the dreaded hinge issue and found myself needing to replace the back cover. I have a Lenovo Ideapad S510p Touch, model number 20299, but the two parts that are compatible according to the hardware maintenance manual, are eitherLS51P LCD Cover With 0.3M Camera TS   Part #90203869LS51P LCD Cover With 1M Camera TS       Part #90203884I can't for the life of me tell whether I have a .3M camera or a 1M camera. Has anyone had any luck finding a specific Lenovo part with a number, where did you order? I'm also wondering whether I can just take off the camera on my current case and use it on a replacement cover as the camera itself isn't damaged, just the plastic backing where the right hinge's screws are supposed to be. Has anyone had any luck ordering a cheap non-touch cover for their touch? I don't use touch anyway so if fits without the added touch functionality, I will be happy.I also want to add how the problem came about. It's not under warranty anymore, but the right hinge suddenly got very stiff, the hinged somehow tightened itself. Trying to close the top normally is what caused the hinge screws to separate from the plastic backing on the case.

Hello, I am a certified repair technician for a large company. I am also Lenovo certified through my company for warranty repairs. We have ran into an issue with a T450 laptop we have not seen before.  The system came in with a no POST issue. We unplugged the internal and external battery and did the reset by pressing and holding the power button and the small micro switch on the system board for 30 seconds. System would not POST so we ordered a new system board. The new board will NOT work with the bottom base cover installed. It will work with the base off, but as soon as it is put on again, the system does not POST. We then have to unplug both batteries and reset the board in order to even get it POST again (with or without batteries). It does work, with base installed, and no batteries plugged in. However, it also works with batteries installed, and no base cover.  What is causing this problem? We have tried other batteries and bases with no resolution.

I volunteered to help a friend upgrade the memory and SSD in their Yoga 460. I've worked on a lot of older ThinkPads, and the HMM made it look pretty easy. But when it says "pry" off the bottom cover, they are not kidding! Unfortunately I'd misplaced my spudgers, so I used an old credit card to help pry the cover off. In the process I broke one of the clips near the power connector. I think I pushed the credit card inward a little too hard. The machine went back together OK, but of course there is now a tiny gap where that clip isn't holding it. My friend treats computers fairly roughly and may not care, but it's bugging me a bit. I should have looked more closely before putting the machine back together, but now I don't remember whether the clip I broke off is part of the base cover or part of the piece it snaps onto (the keyboard bezel?). Would anyone happen to know? If the clip was part of the base cover it would be pretty easy to get a new one and replace it. Thanks!

Hello everyone, hope we're all well! I'm hoping someone can help me! I recently got a HP Pavilion 15-aw065sa and I love it. I decided to upgrade the SSD, and sadly in doing so, have slightly cracked the underside plastic (about an inch along from the middle of the rear towards the centre of the case). It's not a biggie, but I'd really know if there is anywhere (be it HP or someone else) where I can PAY MONEY (to a limit, lets not go silly, it's just a piece of plastic) to get a replacement. I'm also looking at getting an optical HDD caddy, so a DVD drive front replacement would be useful too! If anyone can help please let me know, it's a great laptop! EDIT: Should mention I checked the part surfer, as well as ebay, and sadly can't find anything

I have been dealing with a broken home on my laptop for more than a year. I just searched these forums and found ~70 posts all with the same issue. This seems to be due to poor design that never should have made it past the quality assurance engineers, having a metal hinge screwed into non-reinforced plastic. I find it reprehensible that a premium laptop was made so poorly. I am told by local PC repair shops that it will cost me $400+ to get this fixed. That's 1/3 what I paid for the machine in the first place.I tried calling support and was directed to log onto the support site for assistance, from which I was directed to search the forums. I thought HP made better products than this, but hadn't wanted to put up the money to get one to find out. Then I bit the bullet and got rewarded with a busted hinge on a laptop that spends its days being used by my wife at home, bring opened and closed 2-3 times per day. And now it seems like I'm going to get the runaround to get this fixed, or just have to trash an otherwise great machine due to crappy hinges. I love this laptop as far as performance and hardware specs go but it is a pain to open and close to try and avoid breaking the other hinge and essentially removing the screen.Any guidance on what I can do to get an actual answer or a case submitted to get any useful help?

Hi
My Inspiron 13 7348 ( servic tag 4w6yj52)was physically damaged.
one of the two hinges between the display unit  and the base assembly had detached from its cover and parts of the plastics were broken (1. Display BackCover,  2. base assembly.)
1. I uninstalled the base assembly cover
2. I uninstalled the Display BackCover.
then I could clearly see the damaged parts
I opened a service request at Dell site. then I was talking to the part list sale department.
I send them the photos of uninstalled parts (1 & 2)
I asked Dell to have the price for these two parts.
I wanted to purchase these two "Display BackCover & base assembly " (with some attachments on them)
Surprisingly they  to force me to buy the whole display unit which includes the SCREEN and costs about 200$
The Display BackCovly was easily uninstalled , with the guide of the user-manual doc.
I did not succeded to convince DELL that the back-display-cover,  should be sold separately
the Laptop works OK, with the ability to move the display.
Please Help

A:backup cover display and base assembly replacement for Inspiron 13 7348

As is common on hybrid systems, the entire top assembly is fused together with adhesive.  It's all but impossible to disassemble the upper assembly without destroying the glass, LCD and/or defacing the back plastic - as Dell informed you, the entire upper half of the system must be replaced as a single unit.
You'll find this design very common these days on all systems of this type.

Therefore, I called back and recorded a message multiple times and send mutipule emails following the instuctons  -( providing:  complaint number & ref: serial)- but no one called my back. I am vey disappointed. it has been more than two months and I CAN'T USE MY COMPUTER BECAUSE OF THIS POBLEM. "?11-27-2016 08:34 PMMy envy m6 screen hinge destroyed the lower case and now whenever I try to open the laptop the case gets open because the hinge is not attached to the case anymore.I DID put the screws back in HOWEVER, thanks to bad engineering and the cheap plastic they keep getting out again.I am really disappointed. I am looking for help to solve the problem of the ENVY.The lower case is destroyed now and the upper case doesn?t hold the screws of the hinge in it anymore.By the way, I had Pavilon dv6 and I lost because of bad engineering as well. The first one died because the graphics accelerator got UNATTACHED FROM THE MOTHERBOARD because of the heat generated by the graphics accelerator.I should have learned from my first mistake but I didn't!"

Hi,
I own a Dell Inspiron 5547. I have purchased a Dell notebook for my wife as well and my choice for the company notebook was also Dell. This was because I have trusted the quality and the 3 year warranty.Parts Only warranty 11/4/14 - 11/4/15Carry-in Service/Return to Depot warranty 11/4/14 - 11/4/17
A long time ago, a screw fell out from the notebook and there was no way to put it back, it always came out. Please note that I have never ever tried to do any modifications/repairs on the notebook. As I could not afford to put it into the service for 2 weeks, I've tried to open and close it always with maximum care. Still, it broke eventually and I needed to go to the local Hungarian warranty partner, where I was told that Dell won't cover the issue and I got an offer over USD 150 for repair.
I admit that with turning in the notebook, the damages would have been smaller, but still, the place for the screw would have needed a change and also the plastic and other parts were not as strong as required. I've googled Dell hinge issues and it seems to be a common issue.
In order to keep my trust in Dell, I would like at least a partial guarantee. Else, due to the lack of trust I will need to look for another brand when I will need to replace laptops. This is something I would not like.
Regards,
Aron

I recently purchased a Ergotron Neo-Flex Adjustable monitor stand for my Gateway FPD1960 monitor in August. When I went to assemble the new stand I found that I needed a hinge cover after I removed the neck hinge from the Gateway FPD1960 monitor (See documentation page 5).

I have contacted both Gateway and Ergotron and both deny responsibility for the part. My final conversation with a Gateway representative said I should contact the following stores: Comp USA, Circuit City, Office Depot and Best Buy since they sold Gateway computers to see if they had a hinge cover. I continue to have trouble finding this part.

Could anyone please tell me if such a part exists and where I can purchase it? I would appreciate any help you can give me so I can complete the assembly of my monitor stand to the monitor. Thank you.

I'm trying to remove the hinge cover on my Y700 14isk. I found a video that shows how to do it for the Y700 17isk, but I'm wondering if the process is the same. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyAW3O41740 (He starts removing it at ~3:12 in that video)  Does anyone know if it's the same process? I'm afraid that it's different and I will break it if I try it.

Hi mv1914,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Officially you can follow the hardware manual for disassembly guide here. Try to match it from the video guide here (Y700 15'' available).

The manual advised removal of  some parts first for safety handling (?1110 LCD unit? on page 52 ? ?1120 LCD front bezel? on page 54 ? ?1130 LCD panel and LCD cable? on page 55) before removing the LCD hinges but do take your time reviewing both the video and manual.

I hope this helps answer your query.
Update us how it goes.

Regards

Of course I'm another unfortunately guy that had hinge failure.  While hinges are available for purchase online and not too expensive, the back cover is not.  Apparantly when the hinge failed it broke the plastic mounting point on the LCD panel back cover that the hinge screws into.  This part (90204054 I believe) doesn't appear available online, and even if it was it seams like a rather expensive piece.  Anyone have any help in getting a replacement LCD back cover? Thank you for your assistance.

Hi, When opening my notebook this afternoon to find something on the internet, I noticed that the top cover had a crack (new since earlier this morning). It is close to the hinge on the right-hand side. The top cover opens up when moving the lid now, so it should be fixed before there is any more damage. Please advise my options. Thank you

Another complaint for a broken hinge issue on the 5558 laptop. Of course Dell Service will tell you that there is no known issue for this problem but search the forum and you will find several complaints. Dell is doing nothing about this problem and in my opinion they are definitely side stepping the issue so they do not have to take care of their customers. Dell service claims that the defect is due to "Customer Induced Damage". Dell also claims there is no known issue for this defect so you will have to call the "Out of Warranty" department. The out of warranty department will charge you 160 bucks and take your laptop for 7 to 10 business days. EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING for a laptop that is less than six months old and definitely does not have any customer induced damage.
Laptop purchased 5/13/16
Laptop broke 10/12/16
Spent an hour and a half with DELL chat - Session ID <private> - Result you are <profane>. DELL does not care if you have a defective product.
On my laptop, the actual hinge did not break but the laptop cover broke away from the hinge. Obviously the plastic cover mounting pads are not strong enough to handle the repeated torque on the joint when opening the laptop.

The left hinge has been broken and as a result the base has also cracked.  Is it possible to arrange a fix for my computer? If yes how?
