Virtual PC 2007 - set up a shared folder between virtual machine and host?

Q: Virtual PC 2007 - set up a shared folder between virtual machine and host?

I am still having ONE small issue. I got the additions installed, but it is still not allowing me to set up a shared folder between the virtual machine and the host system. It's saying "Not installed." Here, I'll give you a screenshot of the issue I'm getting.

Preferred Solution: Virtual PC 2007 - set up a shared folder between virtual machine and host?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I just installed windows 8.1 pro on an MSI z97 pc mate motherboard with I5 3.3 ghz processor, 16 gb ddr3 1600 MHz ram, with embedded realtek pcie gbe NIC. I checked and found that hardware virtualization is enabled by default in the BIOS.

I tried to set up a virtual switch using the latest bios and drivers from MSI. I created a virtual switch choosing the external option and the share with host OS option. I then connected to the VM. No network connectivity on VM but host still worked.

I then used autopatcher to update windows 8.1 on the vm. I removed and reinstalled the virtual switch choosing external option and share with host OS option. Same conditions occurred.
And then I installed the latest NIC driver. Same problem - media disconnected.

I tried this process with the latest driver from the realtek website which was a couple years more up to date. I had such high hopes! Same problem.

I then used msconfig to prevent all non-Microsoft services from starting and rebooted. I removed and recreated the switch and I was still hoping for success. Same exact conditions occurred.

These are the conditions that occur whenever an external switch with host os sharing enabled is installed in between all of these troubleshooting steps. It looks exactly the same every time...
The host machine can still access the network but it does so through the virtual switch. Ipconfig /all on the host reveals the following...

Hi,

The issue could be incorrect configuration of XP mode.

I am trying to map a network drive to a remote server. The server is not on the same network as the computer I am trying to map the drive on.

I have the external IP address, the port number, and the drive letter on the server.  I have entered http:// IP Address:Port Number/drive letter.  I get an error message stating that the drive path is incorrect.

I am using the network drive mapping wizard in the Computer screen.

The remote server is part of a local network with 3 other computers running in the VMware workstation connected by NAT connection .I run this server port number 9000 of host machine  by Port forwarding method.

I need help with the proper syntax for mapping the drive to the remote server.  I can't get my Windows 10 machine to connect to the server.  I need to get shared folder of virtual machine in another computer.

How do I map a drive to my remote server?  Please be specific as I am not that familiar with networking.

Thank you in advance for your help.

I am running a server in vmware workstation which is connected with NAT connection. I made port forwarding for access this virtual machine from outside the host computer. That is when type host computer ip:9000 in chrome it redirects to server web interface
which is running in vmware workstation because I redirect port 8080 in virtual machine to port 9000 in host machine.

Now I want to get all shared folders in the virtual machine . when I typed host ip in run dialog box it gives only the host machine shared folders . when i typed host ip along with port number it shows error.

What should I do for getting all shared folders of virtual machine in other computer in same network.

Note:Should not use bridge network connection.

Whether it is possible?.

I have a virtual 32bit XP machine on my Windows 7 64bit Pro box. In Windows 7 Pro, I have created several shared directories. I can map to these shares from the virtual machine, but when I try to access the mapped drives from the virtual machine, the file access is Reeeeeeal Slooooooow. It can sometimes take minutes to change directories in File Manager, or within the file dialogue box in a program. Access to these directories and files when I am on the host is fine.

I did not have this problem when I mapped to an exact duplicate structure of the shared directories when they resided on my company server. Only when I try to map to shared folders on the host of the virtual machine do I have this problem.

Has anybody else tried to map to shares on the host from a virtual machine on the same host? Are you seeing the same problems?

A:Shared Folders From Virtual Machine

I've noticed it's really a lot faster to forget mapping and just create shortcuts to host's folders on XP Mode's desktop.

If integration is enabled, you'll see all the host's drives on XP Mode's Explorer (My Computer). What I've done is I have created shortcuts to my personal folder and public folder on host (C:\Users\Kari and C:\Users\Public), and placed these shortcuts to XP Mode's desktop.

Works well and fast.

Hi world, this is my first post here so be gentle.
i have just installed virtual PC and am running a virtual machine with XP as the OS. ( the host is running on Vista...boo)...all is fine,,,XP installed all ok, but i want to firstly share the internet connection i am running on the host...i have broadband...no router as such just a set top box for tv/ phone etc.....it is running no problem on the host.
I have looked at the share folders option under settings, and I am able to transfer folders over and can see them on the virtual machine...although non of them will run.....
is there something i am doing wrong??..or is there something specific i should be doing to make the internet connection good....( i have altered the 'networking' section of the virtual machine to LAN by the way).. hopefully you will be able to help.......thanks in advance.

I am running Virtual PC 2007 on a Vista Platform. Everything is good with the exception of setting up shared folders. I have three guest PCs running. I have installed Virtual Machine Additions on all three. I am able to set up and access a shared folder on the host system on one of the three with no problem but the other two refuse to access any shared folder. When I configure the shared folder, it shows up in the guest PC under MyComputer, but it shows as "disconnected" and is inaccessible.

I had this same config working just fine when Windows 2003 was the host platform, but can't get it to work with Vista as the host. Is it a Vista problem?

Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

I have an old program that will run on XP but not Win 7 Pro and I am using Windows Virtual PC on my laptop to run it. It works fine but I cannot access files (share drives) from the main hard drive, i.e., the Win 7 file structure. I can work with the VM XP file structure but not the main files. I am able to access flash drives from the VM and so I can move the files around this way but it is very cumbersome. This machine is not on any sort of network. I have done the same thing on my desktop and have exactly the same problem (it operates on Win 7 Pro as well). Security is not a concern; I am the only user of these machines.

I have read what I can find about this and tried resetting all kinds of "sharing" permissions, including sharing just a folder instead of the entire drive, enabling sharing from both the Win 7 side and the VM XP side, etc. I've tried everything I can but to no avail.

Can anyone offer some ideas and/or direct me to a thorough discussion of this issue? Thanks in advance.

I've just installed a virtual machine (running XP Pro) onto my Vista machine. The Vista machine has a USB external hard drive attached. When trying to access the data on this hard drive from within the virtual machine (via the bridged network link between the virtual machine and the host) it is incredibly slow. I've tried moving the USB hard drive to another PC on the network (running XP Pro) and accessing it from the XP Pro virtual machine on the first PC, and this works fine. I'd be very grateful for any help or ideas!

Can someone explain the difference between these 3 programs?

A:Remote desktop, Virtual Machine and Virtual Box

Hi Jason6161 Two of these words are closely related, while the other one isn't.Remote Desktop is often a reference to the "RDP" acronym, which means "Remote Desktop Protocol", a protocol used by Microsoft Windows systems to remotely connect to another Windows system (or even other OS now). There's a nice little article on Microsoft website about, I suggest you to give it a read. If there's something you don't understand in it, let me know and I'll explain it to you.Connect to another computer using Remote Desktop ConnectionA Virtual Machine is like the state name, a machine that doesn't exist physically, it only exists virtually inside a system. It's the emulation of a system inside another system. So you could for example have Windows 8.1 installed on your computer, but using a program, create a virtual machine running Windows XP in it. To put it simply, it's running an independant system (guest) inside a system (host). For more information, you can consult the Wikipedia article below.Virtual machineVirtualBox is a program developped and maintenant by Oracle that allows you to create virtual machines. It's what we call an "hypervisor". A program that allows you to create and manage virtual machines. For more information, you can consult their website and their Wikipedia article.VirtualBoxVirtualBox WikiSo to sum it up, you can use VirtualBox to create a virtual machine (or multiple VMs), and you use the "Remote Desktop" to connect remotely to another computer and access it. ... In Virtualbox's main screen, select your XP machine (do not start it). Click settings. On the left side, click System. On the Motherboard tab, set Base Memory to 1024. On the Acceleration tab, be sure that both boxes are checked. You may need to enter your computer's BIOS and enable its virtualization features. On the left side, click Display. On the Video tab, be sure that Enable 3D acceleration and Enable 2d video acceleration are checked. Click OK to save the changes.Start the XP virtual machine and let it finish booting. Above XP you'll see a menu bar. Click Devices > Install Guest Additions and follow the prompts. You will not be able to install your ATI drivers. Virtualbox is emulating its own set of hardware for Windows XP to use. My instructions will tell Virtualbox to give XP enough resources to run your game.As for the game itself, if it is on a CD, click Devices > CD/DVD Devices and make sure that your CD drive is selected.

I'm running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, and have installed the Virtual XP mode.  A long time ago Virtual XP was fully running, with access to host resources (drives etc).  But my system underwent some software changes, and then Virtual XP could no longer
access the host resources.  After trying (unsuccessfully) all the tricks found on several forums, I decided to uninstall then reinstall Virtual XP, which I have just done.  But I still can't access host drives.  Here's how Virtual XP is set
up:
Workgroup name is set to the same as my host (confirmed in 'My Computer'/Properties/Name);
Networking 'Adapter 1' set to my host's NIC;  I have assigned a fixed IP address to the Virtual XP (this has worked previously; all devices on my Win7 network have fixed addresses, for good reason).

Integration Features has ticks in the boxes for those host drives I want to access from VXP.
I can successfully ping the host, via name or IP address;  I can successfully ping web sites by name (e.g. 'yahoo.com').  But when I open Windows Explorer and open the 'My Network Places' tree, it opens down to the name of my host workgroup, but
when I click on that workgroup name, after several seconds it pops up an error box saying: "<workgroupname> is not accessible.  You might not have permission to use this network resource.  <blah blah>.  The service has not been
started."
Any suggestions on how to get access to my host... Read more

I am running Mac OSx through virtualization using VirtualBox. I have a bunch of stuff on there that I don't have on my main OS, Windows 7. I was wondering if there was a way to be able to access it on windows without opening the virtual mac, or without downloading it separately on the windows. Because everything is still on this hard drive, so can't I just search for it in windows and be able to find it? It's not that big of a deal for now since its just mainly pictures and music, which I can easily get on Windows in the first place. But I was thinking about putting some movies and bigger sized files on OSx and I just started wondering if I would be able to get them on the windows.

Anyways, like I said it's not that big of a deal if I can't. I just want to know if it's possible.

And just to quickly re-explain my little situation just incase you got confused. My computer runs Windows 7. And through a program I download called VirtualBox, I can boot into Mac OSx through virtualization. I creaded a virtual hard drive and gave it like 120 gigs out of my 600 gig hard drive.

A:Virtual Machine Help

The question you must first answer is whether you want to be able to use both OS's at the same time - - for that you'd need to use a Virtual Machine.
If you want to run them separately, then you could install them as dual-boot.

As far as Virtual Machines Hosts go, you'd probably be better with Oracle VirtualBox than Microsoft VPC2007 - (VPC isn't fully supported in Vista Home Premium). Other options include VMWare (which is arguably better than either).

Dual Booting Windows and Linux is not really a job for beginners - although there are many sites that will get you started - and I would suggest playing in a VM first even if you eventually elect a dual-boot.

Okay so I was wondering earlier. Is it possible, and if so is it easy enough, to use a Virtual Machine to test files for malware. For example, if you used VM Ware and install Windows or Linux and some security tools on it and tested files on there before using it on your actual PC. So you could determine whether or not a file was clean, and if it was then fair enough you can use it on your actual PC. So, is there any chance that if a file was infected, it could break out of the Virtual Machine and infect your actual PC, rather than just infecting the Virtual PC and you just wiping that and reverting back.

If this can be done, then is there a good free alternative to VM Ware for using Virtual Machines, because as far as I know, VM Ware isn't free and unfortunately I can't purchase it right now. Also, does anybody know of a tutorial or can write one themselves on using a Virtual Machine like VM Ware, for checking files for malware and infections using Virtual Machines. Preferably using Linux as I don't have a spare copy of Windows to use right now, however either will do.

Thanks for reading.

Hello everyone. I have got an issue with using virtual box. I am trying to run a virtual machine with Ubuntu on it. I am allocating GB of hard disk space and 1GB of RAM. Both of which I have to spare from my laptop. The virtual machine keeps crashing when I launch it. I have read and apparently a few people using the Think Pad have had this issue. I have followed the steps that were suggested to them. These include: Re installing Virtual Box,Disabling Hyper-V windows feature (Through GUI and Command Prompt) Uninstalling and reinstalling did nothing. I do not have an option to disable or enable Hyper-V and the command failed. I need to be able to run a virtual box for one of my classes at university. I am quite close to restoring to factory settings but I want to avoid that at all costs. Any suggestions welcome. ThanksChris

You'd need to get yourself some virtualization software.
I use VirtualBox, but there are others available if you prefer.

You also need the installation disks for an Operating System, and a license to install them as though on a regular machine.

If the Operating System you install is 32 bit it will be able to run 16 bit software.
If the Operating System you install is 64 bit it won't be able to, just as your physical host OS cannot run such software.
If you install another family of OS onto the VM, such as Linux, you'll be able to run Linux software from within the Virtual machine but not Windows software.

Any more questions feel free to ask.
And Merry Christmas to you too.

Hi guys,

I just reformat & reinstall win 98 SE.
My IE freeze when opening what I thought to be a java script window.
In the past I recall a window pop up telling me to download microsoft virtual machine, so I go to microsoft site only to find that there's a legal dispute with Sun system.

So what should I do so I can open javascript window without problem?

thanks

I've used Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 and now I'm demoing VMWare for a trial period. I must say on so far only running Virtuals of Vista, XP, and Server 2003 Vista is hard to emulate for a virtual PC. The funny thing is that VMWare does a better job than Virtual PC which is funny considering MS makes Vista and you would think they could emulate it better but no.

So that kind of gets to my next question? Anyone know any more virtual machines out there they themselves have tried and where please with. I'm thinking of forcing some of my users in my domain to go virtual and creating an image of their Harddisks on site. It's Sooooo much easier restoring a virtual system versus the real thing in every sense of the word. So far I like VMware more the way it handles and the options it gives but MS Virtual PC 07' you can't beat at it's price, free.

Hi,
If you've not already done so, have a look at this site - Tech Support Alert.
http://www.techsupportalert.com/

You can view the top 46 progs without signing-up. However, review number 88 is the one that will most interest you I think. To get access to this you need to subscribe (free I think) and you'll get no spam/junk etc from doing so but you get a very informative monthly newsletter.

I hope this is of help?

a friend of mine has a windows 8 laptop but needs windws 7 for some work stuff,if i install windows 7 on a virtual machine on his windows 8 laptop will it work ok

A:virtual machine

Yes, it will, but you would need a decent amount of memory for it to work well. How much RAM does the laptop have? Also, has your friend tried changing the compatibility settings for the program and set it to Windows 7 to see if it works?

I have a laptop which is my main computer with Windows 8.1. My desktop has Windows 7. I was thinking about putting the beta version of 10 on a virtual machine on my desktop. But I read somewhere that it should not go on a virtual machine and that I should just install it over Windows 7 on my desktop. I'd rather not install it over Win7 so what's your thoughts on the virtual machine?
Thanks Frank

I have Win 10 installed in VMs on several machines. Works great. Don't know where you read that it shouldn't be done as it's a great way to test out new OSes. You can use free software like VMWare Player, VirtualBox or even Virtual PC on Win 7 or Win 8. If you have 64-bit Win 8 you can setup a VM using the included Hyper-V.

Hi there. Stumbling upon this website I saw the line "There is no such thing as a stupid question". So here it goes.

First let me describe my situation. I want to be able to have a virtual machine running on a cloud (don't know if that is the correct description) and connected to the internet 24/7. But this must be a cloud based (again don't know if this is the correct description) internet as well as our internet is on and off the whole time because of my country's limitations. So is this possible?

Hi folks;

I'm having problems installing java virtual machine (again.) I've been trying for 3 days but keep getting corrupt files and have to start all over again.
What is the best site to download it from?

Why does IE 6 not have virtual machine on it? I'm thinking of uninstalling it and downloading IE 5.5 instead, because that already has it on, but I always have problems downloading IE 5.5 too.

Hi guys! I was planning on installing a virtual machine on my laptop for education purposes (I would be installing Linux, and learning how to use the command line interface)

I was just worried that since people say Virtual Machine OS's run slower than your real OS, that my specs wouldn't be enough or I dont have enough RAM. The laptop I will be installing it on has got:

CPU: I3 3110M
RAM: 4GB
HDD: 1TB

Would the virtual machine be too slow for me to be able to reasonably use?

(I didnt know where to post this, I thought there would be a sub section for just virtual machine questions, but I couldnt find it, I hope this is the right place.)

if your just looking to do command line why not just make a Linux bootable usb?
