Tips for after purchase

Q: Tips for after purchase

Hello, I have finally decided after much help from people on this website to purchase the Acer Predator Helios 300( Probably buy from Amazon)- https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06Y4GZS9C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_Nq.AzbSN1PH2J

Does anyone have any tips such as what kind of things I should delete that take up too much space and other things to do to it to make it run better. The main reason I am buying this is to play arma 3.

Thank you

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

For me, a thread titled "Help Please" is less likely to get my interest than one with a hint in the title "Will not boot" etc.

As a virus magnet I have spent many days without my PC. Instead of binning my old PC on getting a better one I hung onto it. It allows me to at least ask questions to help me fix my normal one.

I had a quick shuftie at the BIOS settings whilst the machine was working well.
Made notes as to what they were.
Sometimes nasties can alter basic settings but if I know what they should be then it gives me slightly more confidence in making alterations.

If you have alloy wheels then get a wheel spider and wrap a couple of layers of tape round the relevant end. It not only shows the end to use but it stops the thing scratching your wheels as you fumble it onto the wheel nuts. WTF?

I moved this to the hardware forum. It could go in either hw or the windows 2k, nt, xp forum. Since you asked about the drives, I put it in hw.

You would need to jumper the 60gig as the master and the 20gig as the slave drive. When you do the install, your 60 would then be your system or C drive.

Since your 20gig has an os already, I would have that drive disconnected during the install or you will end up with a boot menu. Once you have the os installed, you can shutdown and reconnect the drive.

A:Best SSD Tips

Leave it alone. Seriously.

The only thing I would suggest is possible disabling the Hiberfile, to free up some space. Especially if you do not use hibernate, its just wasted space.
Beyond that, leave it be and enjoy a faster PC.

Theres tons of tweaks you can do to reduce writes etc. but from my experience it actually makes either no difference, or slows things down a bit.

That an HP? If so they are known for being loaded with bloatware, so you'll want to first go to msconfig>Startup and turn off everything except your AV and gadgets/stikynotes if u use them at startup. Troubleshooting with MSCONFIG

HP has a connection manager that slows your system and startup (like most bloatware) so turn it off and set up your connection in the bottom right system tray.

Use a lightweight free AV like MS Security Essentials with the Win7 Firewall. Uninstall the bloated AV that came with your HP using Revo Uninstaller: Use Advanced mode, it will set a restore point and run Windows uninstaller, don't restart at prompt but click Next to Delete all the bolded Reg keys and files it leaves behind.

Follow this same procedure for all the bloatware you don't want, after you decide.

Bloatware can corrupt Win7 even by its uninstall so periodically run SFC -SCANNOW Command - System File Checker to repair system files and see if any have corrupted requiring a Repair Install or clean reinstall.

Most makers no longer include OS DVD so they can enforce the bloatware which provides most of their profit margin (exception: Business computers). This causes tech enthusiasts to locate a clean-copy installer for their version or unlock all versions in any retail installer, to clean reinstall using the Product Key on COA sticker affixed to computer. Universal Installation Disc - Create

I am going to get a CD re-writer for back-ups. My computer place stocks Liteon 40x12x48 with Nero Software.

Have never used a burner before and was wondering if this is an OK brand. I looked it up on the Internet and it seems quite popular. I only want it for basic stuff. I don't really want to go elsewhere as this place has looked after the computer very well since I got it.

Just thought I would check out the views of this forum.
Thanks

A:Purchase of CD-R/RW

The Lite-On is an excellent burner for the money. Lite-On has been good about their firmware updates. The 40X burner you mentioned was released without Mt Rainier support and with P-CAV recording mode. They added both Mt Rainier and true CAV recording through firmware. You donít have to know what all that means. Just go to their site and get their latest firmware and you will have the fastest 40x burner on the market.

I am building a computer for my first time and after choosing a motherboard, have no idea what RAM to buy. I know that I want 8 gigs of RAM, and the motherboard has slots for 4 RAM cards, but I don't know how to figure out how many pins should be on the RAM that I buy. The motherboard that I chose is an MSI ATX DDR3 2133 Motherboard 970. I would prefer a RAM card from Corsair, but thats just personal preference, not necessity. Help anyone?

Also, in case you need more info about my motherboard, I got it at this URL: http://www.amazon.com/MSI-DDR3-Moth..._n_feature_keywords_two_browse-bin:6159420011

A:What RAM should I purchase?

As described in the motherboard description - Memory: 4x DDR3-2133(OC)/ 1866/ 1600/ 1333/ 1066 DIMM Slots, Dual Channel, Max Capacity of 32GB.

This means your motherboard takes DDR3 memory. When an OC follows a number it means that in order for you to run 2133 memory you must overclock, I.e. add more voltage to get it to function at this speed. This is something you don't have to concern yourself with.

Before we move forward why this motherboard? Here are 2 questions that will help you in the process of building a PC:

1. What do you want your system to do?
2. What is your budget?

I am considering buying/installing an SSD, probably 240gb. I currently have a very well functioning machine with a 1tb HD and all my OS and software is installed on that HD. I am using Windows 7, with all the latest updates installed. I have never used an SSD or installed one so I have some questions:
1. Is 240gb enough or would 128gb be sufficient? I believe I only want Windows 7 (likely upgrade to Windows 8 when released) on the SSD and leave my current HD alone with all my software as it is currently installed.
2. What/where can I find a step by step for installing the SSD and directing the OS to read everything else from the current HD.
3. I usually use the Hibernate feature and only completely power down every few days. Would that still be acceptable?
4. I assume I would have to purchase a new copy of the OS therefore I may wait until Windows 8 is released before making the change.
Thanks

I 'm going to buy a new computer, $400 is my limit. "Tigerdirect" has several that looks like they would fit my needs.
Systemax Ascent KMA3500 ($399 + &19.95 shipping)
ADM Athlon 64 X2 4400+ 2.30GHz
160GB SATA 7200 HD
Memory DDR2 2GB
GeForce 6100 GPU
DVDRW
350 Watt Power Supply
Operating System: "Windows Vista Business"
Startup OS: "Windows XP Pro"
I'm leaning toward this one because most of my software is old and may not play on Vista, and I like XP it has done me no wrong. Besides I'm 84 years old and I don't want to learn any new systems.
WS Office97, Lotus 123, and others. I am not in position to replace my software with the latest editions.

The other is:
Compaq Presario SR5710Y (Refurbished) ($299 + $19.95 Shipping)
ADM Athlon X2 4450e 2.3GHz
250GB SATA 7200 HD
Memory DDR2 3GB
GeForce 6150SE
DVDRW
250 Watt Power Supply
Operating System: "Windows Home Vista Premium"
The Vista is a drawback, but this looks like a great buy.

Any suggestions , comments or pertinent information on these two machines , or others in my price range?.
Has anyone any info. on machines like the Systemax with 2 OS?

Ok so I am looking to purchasing my first NAS and I am having trouble trying to understand what I should purchase based on my needs. Here is what I am looking for:

-HDD indicator for each drive
-Gigabit Ethernet
-Hot swappable
-Compatible with OS X and linux
-Capable of showing up as a Network drive for everyone to access

Most that I have researched involve a web interface to set up and can only be access through there such as QNAP. Any chance that there are any that don't involve the web to constantly access? I plan to have like 8TB in the nas.

Thanks in advance!

A:NAS purchase need help

I think they pretty much all use a browser to access settings, but its jut by local I.P. address, nothing Internet involved unless you're coming at it from the WAN side, then you need a NAS with web-access.

NAS drives are usually tucked out of the way and rarely looked at, better for the NAS to email you periodically about it condition. Gigabit is important but so is the underlying power of the NAS itself. Cheap NAS drives with gigabit ethernet can still be slow--usually the more expensive they are, the faster and even more robust ones have a second gigabit port as a failsafe.

Don't know about hot swappable. Mine are in RAID 1 and they'lll email me if there's a problem (hopefully).
Compatibility, some would have thier own format like RiserFS, and I think all mine are now just good old NTFS so there is no need for translation at all with Windows so I'm not sure about standardization when it comes to sharing with those three main OS flavors.
All NAS drives show up on a network once properly configured, with their own I.P. address and name...that's the N in NAS.

Ok so I am in need of some new RAM, currently I have 2x2GB of DDR2 800MHz Corsair Gaming Memory totaling 4GB, but one of the RAM sticks is bad and doesn't work. And I don't want to spend $95 on a 2GB RAM stick. So I have $90 left that I had gotten on my birthday, and was wondering what is the best, highest amount of DDR2 RAM I could buy. I want a lot of DDR2 RAM, but not only do I want a lot but I want it to be good quality RAM that will last a long time, and has a fast speed like 800MHz or higher for $90 or less.

A:New RAM Purchase Help

Welcome,
Dont really have an answer to your question, but have some advice. If you are not going to replace all the ram at once, be careful with the purchase. Make sure that all the sticks are identical, especially the frequency. Many, who replace, ram, buy all that will be used at the same time.

BTW a belated happy birthday.

I need to purchase a new FP Shooter and just can't seem to decide between "Battlefield 1942" and "VietCong". I've read all the reviews and as usual they leave me with no information.

I am concerned that both of these titles will be either too much or too buggy for my PC. Is there anyone out there with any experience with these titles?

My PC as a 32mb GeForce 2 video card. Which was more than enough for 'Unreal Tournament 2003', MOHAA, Red Faction II and "Delta Force: Black Hawk Down".

Since it is still a long time before 'Halo' or 'Half Life2' or 'Doom 3' will be released I need another FPS to tide me over until then. Are there any other FPS's out there that I am overlooking?

...a hardware firewall for an office network. We have about 15 computers connected through a DSL modem plugged into a switch. I was wondering what exactly "unlimited nodes" stands for on firewalls such as our old sonic wall? Will this firewall protect the amount of computers we have? http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=251800
http://www.netgear.com/Products/VPNandSSL/WiredVPNFirewallRouters/FVS124G.aspx?detail=Specifications

A:Looking to purchase...

"Unlimited nodes" means exactly that - the firewall will work with any number of hosts behind it. This is opposed to products that will work with only X amount of computers at a time.

As for which device to get.. This depends on what you want that firewall to do and how much traffic it should handle.

PS
I really doubt that you would have functional internet with lots of computers plugged into a DSL modem. Are you sure that this "DSL modem" thing does not already include a router and therefore also a firewall?

Hello all, i'm planning on purchasing a new computer for christmas from an online store that i feel is fairly reputable. i'm just not sure what type of processor to shoot for though. i currently have a 1.3 ghz Intel Celeron from gateway that i bought off my sister not too long ago. This system is fairly outdated that i know, and i am wondering if I should go with a quad or dual core intel that is 1.8ghz or am i better off with an intel celeron D 3.6ghz. from what i am hearing the dual core is (2) 1.8 ghz cores, so in essence a 2.6 ghz right? on one hand i think that the 3.6ghz would be pretty damn fast, and yet i read articles that would lead me to believe the 1.8 ghz dual core would be faster. i plan on using my computer for normal internet browsing as well as some gaming. i play some mmorpg's like guild wars and plan on getting into playing some half life and gears of war. which of these two processors would be best for a gaming system. These are the two that i am looking at here.

Intel Core 2 Duo 800 / 1066Mhz FSB
or
Intel Celeron D365 3.6ghz Lga775 533fsb

which is the best for gaming?

A:New Purchase, what to buy

two cores does NOT. i repeat. NOT mean twice the power. it simply splits the load between two processors. it makes it a hell of a lot faster even at a slower gigahertz speed.

i just want to clear that up so there are no misconceptions there. that's a key thing.

if you want game and play something like the half life series or gears of war, you're going to want a fairly hefty processor. not to mention a good graphics card.

the processors you'll want to look at are the Intel E6750 Core 2 duo, and hte Intel Q6600 quad core. you can even look up some benchmarks to show you how they perform as compared to other chips here:
http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu_2007.html

for the rest of the system, make sure you have a quality power supply, at least 2 gigs of RAM from a good manufacturer, and a graphics chip that was very recently introduced.

in terms of power supplies, i suggest the Antec Earthwatts 500watt, the Antec NeoHE 500watt, or an Enermax Liberty power supply. those are very powerful for the price, and are certified to give at least 80% efficiency if not better. so you'll get vast amounts of power, and you'll save on your electricity bill.

for the RAM, get some from Crucial, Mushkin, Corsair, G. Skill, or OCZ technologies. those are the top brands in the business. or at least make sure it comes with it. and get at least 2 gigs worth.

for the graphics chip, i recommend at least an 8800gt or better for gaming. or if you're into ATI, go with th... Read more

Hi Guys,

Im looking to upgrade my RAM to 1600Mhz.

Im wanna get 8Gb again

I've seen: Corsair 8Gb DDR3 1600MHz Vengence Memory

And also Crucial Ballistix 8Gb 1600MHz

My Budget is ?40-50, and was just really after some opinions, or whether anybody as any alternatives which are possibly better?

Also just wondering if i can go to 1866MHz as i can get some which fits in my budget

Crucial Ballistix 8Gb 1866MHz

Thanks for any help in advance

A:Help with new RAM purchase

The only specs for RAM that you want to be careful to match are:
DDR3
1.5v
Unbuffered
non-ECC
Although I must mention that you should not expect to see a real world noticeable increase in performance by jumping up from 1333 to 1600 (or even 1866). Running faster RAM can be important in overclocking in order to get a stable overclock.
Alternately, you could play with overclocking your current RAM to 1600 and save the money. Some 1333 sticks (but not all) can handle it.

well i have some money in hand... and i was wondering in wat to spend it on, this is my current system..

AMD anthlon 64 2x dual core 2.4, 4600
2 x 7600Gt Xpervision gpu/Nvidia
550W psu
M2n-E Sli motherboard
3.5gb of RAM

now i have 3 objects that i am wanting..
the 8800gtx 300mgb...
the new amd anthlong 64 2x dual core 3, 6000
or
a new computer case with built in watercooling -(was suppose to get the other day but had none in stock)

now i think the case wud b the best as i cud overclock my 7600 and my cpu more as they wudnt overheat and i wudnt have to sell my old case like i wud wif my cpu and gpus... (i wud lose a lot of mony tryin to sell them)

A:what to purchase...

Get the 8800GTS 320mb (I think this was what you're referring to).

This would give you the highest performance boost IMO. Twin 7600GT just wouldn't compete, unless you overclock using LN2, and even that, its debatable.

Here are some helpful posting tips:

Topic name. Posting stuff like Help!!!, might not be as good as My sound card stutters. This will help get people that may be able to help solve the problem to your post quicker. It helps cut the time of reading through posts that someone has no idea about.

Also try and post as much info as possible. For example, if you are having sound card problems, please let us know what type of sound card you have. Also if anything was added to the system recently. If you do not know what kind of hardware you have, feel free to say so. We will walk you through it. This should help cut down of the asking for more infomation.

Information that should be in every post for help, Operating System in use, and patch level. The make/model of any hardware you're using that might have a bearing on the problem.

It's hard to solve problems from a distance in ASCII, but it's almost impossible with no useful information about the environment.

Does anyone have a "great" tweaks for firefox 3.0.7?
I tried them all from suggestions on line, but my pages seem like they load slow.

I have 2 mpbs speed upload and 1mpbs download, but I think I could get my firefox to load
pages faster.

Any tips? I did the about:config, and changed a few from the
online suggestions.

A:Firefox tips

i have fasterfox lite & tweak network add-ons. they both help alot with pages loading faster than without them. i think fasterfox lite is alittle quicker than fasterfox which i have also. you can switch back & forth to see which one you like better. if you click "options on fasterfox lite", you can choose the settings. i've noticed its alittle quicker with it set on "courteous" than turbo. turbo seems to pound the servers harder & actually seems to slow the loading process down. but its still quicker with it on turbo than without it at all. you just have to play around with it. you should also load the page timer too so you can see how much time it takes to load the pages. i recently added tweak network 1.3 & its the first tweak tool that actually works! just click on power, hit ok & check it out. if you have another tweak tool that tweaks your tcp settings, it can cause the power setting to keep reverting to default. i emailed the developer edwin martin, & to my suprise he replied in one day & said that another tweak tool can cause the imcompatability with his. so i just got rid of the other one. he told me i could delete some of the lines in some prefs or something like that, which i did & it stays on the power setting now. i forget where to make the changes. if you have a similar problem with it, just email him. i've read about all those ram tweak tools that don't actually work after a while. don't bot... Right out of the box, Windows is just a so-so operating system. It doesn't really reach its potential until you've cracked it, hacked it, and otherwise bent it to your will.

Whether you want to speed up XP, customize Vista's Aero interface, manage your disk partitions, or do quick-and-dirty photo editing, its mandatory to have a quick look at the Windows.

For more information please do refer to the article from pcworld. Hope it would be useful:

I have a Compaq NC6400 with a 2.0 Processor (T7200?), 60 GB HDD, 1 GB RAM and XP Pro. I have 16m internet, but my computer loads and shuts down incredibly slowly, but currently my charger is acting up so I cant poke around with settings (and wouldn't know much of what to do anyway. Is it the computer, or can I improve my situation? Thanks in advance.

A:tips for optimizing xp

What would your charger have to do with poking around settings? As long as your battery has a full charge and won't die in the middle of an update, you should be good.

Hey all you XP uses out there, I've come across a few tips from WWW.XP-MD.COM
that will jump start your machine, at least they did for mine.

- Change Your MFT
1. Click Start, select Run.
2. In the new window type REGEDIT.
3. In the new window find the Registry Key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Filesystem
4. On the right side of the window, find the key NtfsMftZoneReservation.
5. Change the value to 4 for the largest MFT size.(2-Medium MFT size,3-Large MFT size)
6. Exit and restart your computer.

-Disable Indexing
1. Open My Computer and Right Click on the drive Indexing will be turned off.
2. In the new window find and uncheck the box next to Allow Indexing Service.
3. Click the Apply button and wait for the process to finish
I came across these at WWW.XP-MD.COM . Its got a pretty good list of performance boosts and how to's. Although, its got a bunch of simple things like how to change volume and add users. Hopefully they'll post more How To's soon because I went through them pretty quickly
