Outlook express crashes when closing

Q: Outlook express crashes when closing

Nearly everytime I close Outlook Express it crashes. In fact there is a program named "msimn" (which I think is Outlook Express himself) which is still running when the program window is closed. Then it turns to "no response" and it can freeze my computer or most of the times my web browser.
I said "nearly everytime" because it doesn't crash everytime I close it. It's often when Internet Explorer is already launched.
This problem appeared some months ago but I don't know if it's consequent to any program installation.
My computer is two years old, 1Ghz, runs with Windows ME and has got 384 Mo RAM. It has got one drive separated in two ones of 22 and 15 Go. The first one is where Windows is installed and the second one is for documents. The first one has 9 Go free and the second one 3 Go.
My second problem is that I find it is too slow when comparing it to other 1Ghz computers. I think that it has to be infected by any small virus(es) that only slow it down and crash it sometimes. I give you here under the log of HiJackThis if you can find something strange in it.

Thank you !

Preferred Solution: Outlook express crashes when closing

I recommend downloading and running Outlook PST Repair. It's a PST repair tool that I've used it in the past to recover emails, contacts, tasks and notes from corrupt Outlook files that are damaged or inaccessible. Supports Outlook 2000, 2002, 2003, 2007, 2010 and 2013.

You can download it direct from this link http://goo.gl/1bjhSi. (This link will automatically start a download of Outlook PST Repair that you can save to your computer.)

Iam using outlook express 6 and xp home. I always leave my e.mails program minimised when not using it as I have various rules set up so that certain messages are forwarded to my mobile phone. However, recently outlook express has been closing down giving the message "outlook express has encountered a problem and has had to close - click to send an error report". I do as told and an error report is sent, but no improvement follows. This probably happens about once a day, but is most annoying when I am out and I miss my messages.

Any suggestions on how I can stop this?

Every time I closed my outlook express 6, I received this error msg.
The instruction at “0x77f5215e” referenced memory at “0x007f443c”. The memory could not be “written”. Click on OK to terminate the program

It was working fine for a while until lately when it came up (whilst sending and rxing):
The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'mail.virgin.net', Server: 'mail.virgin.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Only way to solve was to reload outlook express 6. But I cannot anymore as I have a newer version on my machine (after downloading it from M$)

Hi people.

Running XP, OE 6.00.2900

Updated a few minor (I thought) Windows updates, also updated to latest ETrust AV and also latest ZoneAlarm (yeah, I know, but it's not my PC and I thought I'd do it all at once - and now it is too late).

Now OE closes down at random, usually around 2 times a day plus any time you've got half way through typing in an email. It "encounters a problem" i.e. gets the messagebox which replaced the BSOD.

Apparently it all goes pointy-bits upwards in the NTDLL.DLL.

Any ideas? Etrust says it's virus-free.

A:Outlook Express closing down at random

Could it be that OE is downloadin' TIFiles that the AV apps are recognizing as harmful, causing shutdown?

Always someting new!

I'm using Outlook Express. Never had any problems with it before.

Now, for about the last month or so, approximately 25% of the time, when I close OE by clicking the close box, I get a total system hang-up and the following message:
"A fatal exception OE has occurred at 0028:C29ADB28 in VXD PCIMP(01) + 00001C08
The current application will be terminated.
Press any key to continue"

Pressing any key, or Cntrl-Alt-Del does nothing. I have to restart the PC.

This is a new problem. OE runs fine-except when closing.
Haven't added any new programs lately.

Any thoughts would be most appreciated.

Well I know there is no error message but some system stat's would be good along with the version of outlook express. Also becasue it is Outlook Express doing this I would like you to do a HijackThis

To download HJTsetup.exe To Download HijackThis go to the following: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/html/downloads.html
Save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialog boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialog.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialog box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
At the top of the Notepad HJT log screen, hit Edit then Select All then click Edit and then click Copy doing that copies the text to the clipboard, you won't see it yet....
Open a TechSupportGuy forum Reply window for this thread, to have ready to paste the Hijackthis log into. Click once to place the typing cursor in the reply window.
At the top of your TSG/browser window, hit Edit then Paste
You should see your copied Hijackthis log appear in the reply space....then, submit the reply

Howdy. I hope someone can help. Awhile ago, I accidently downloaded auto windows updates of SP2 which I did not want to do. My problems with IE and OE (Have windows XP HOme edition) constantly freezing and closing out with error reports started then. It's getting MUCH WORSE AND MORE FREQUENT. I have resisted and not downloaded any more SP2 auto updates since.

I do virus and spy checks daily--no problems there; no new software recently installed.

Do I need to be doing these persistant auto SP2 updates now? Will that solve this problem? Thanks soooo much for any help!!

I suppose you could uninstall SP2 and then order (free) the SP2 disk from microsoftts website and then install SP2 once you have run all the ware you can to clean up your hard drive and diskscan or scan disk and defragment your hard drive.

You get a better install that way if you use the CD and get your hard drive in order as best you can beforehand.

I recently had a new hard drive installed (a master, no other hard drives running), and now when I close out of the internet, I have a weird text file on my desktop named "~". When I open it with wordpad, it looks like a list of e-mail addresses from my contact list. I can't figure out what's causing this. I can delete it with no problem and get rid of it, but it's kind of annoying.

Here's a puzzler in a newly installed XP Home-SP2 computer with OE6. When mail is accessed via OE6/dialup, then read normally, then OE 6 is closed; the desktop appears to become almost frozen - certainly the icons on the desktop become inactive. None of the desktop programs/icons will launch a program. I don't think they can be launched from the start menu either - but I'm not sure, since I didn't try that while helping a friend with this issue.

BUT - If I just log off, then back on, (even while leaving the dialup connected and active)....the desktop seems to recover and all icons/programs on the desktop work normally. Odd?

Also, when I try to click the X on the box to close it, my mouse dissapears when it moves over the box, however i can still click the x. Whenever this happens, I can usually reopen outlook immeadiatly after and it works like normal. Whats up?

A:Outlook express crashes... or something.

Outlook Express is closely integrated with Internet Explorer so sudden squirrely behavior of either one makes spyware the first thing to suspect.

If you haven't already, download, install, immediately update and then run Spybot and/or AdAware. Read the help files to familiarize yourself with how they work. I recommend you use them both since each tends to find things the other misses. Let them clean up any spyware found.

Then, to be doubly sure, download and run CWShredder.

Please post back to let us know if that worked.

I had the problem of Outlook Express 5.5 crashing when downloading my email. I used my laptop to download it and my desktop has been working fine, until now. It is doing it again, crashing on the fifth email each time I try. I have a Pent II with 64 Meg of ram. I suspect memory problems since I am having problems running scan disk and defrag. I get banners that pop up when I am on the internet with no message inside, just blank banners. I have a dial up connection and I have noticed the computer trying to dial up the internet when nobody was or had been on the computer for a few hours.

I suspect a cookie or program that is using up memory and trying to send info about me over the internet without my permission and in the process, making my computer run slow and now messing up my email.

Any suggestions?

What do I do next? Buy a new PC perhaps?

I think the registry is corrupted but is there a way to bypass the registry checking?

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. I'm running Outlook Express 6 with Windows XP SP3.

When I click on a link in an email message, Internet Explorer fails to open and Outlook Express hangs, and I need to do a ctrl-alt-del to get out of it.

I've checked the problems listed in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q177054/ but that didn't make any difference, and I've also tried the advice I found elsewhere to go Start - Run REGSVR32 URLMON.DLL and reset Internet Explorer to default settings.

I've also found that the links to Windows Update in the standard windows Start menu don't work either.

I'm using ESET Smart Security 3.0.669.0 but nothing in the firewall log shows no connections blocked, and I disabled all protection options when trying to get this problem solved and it made no difference.

Help would be appreciated. Thanks

I have XP with service pak 3 with IE 8.0 with plenty of memory and disk space. Everything is completely updated also.
As soon as I click on the browse button to attach an email, my program just freezes or a message that IE or Firefox has shutdown and will reopen in a new tab.. This happens in Outlook Express and all my web mail, too. With Outlook Express I can go as far as clicking on "insert/file attachment" and the whole program just vanishes and I'm back on my desktop.
I've tried reinstalling IE 8 and also intalled Firefox, too, and still have the same results. At the same time this problem appeared, Notepad and one of the graphics programs I use won't let me save without crashing. They just vanish!
I have so many programs on this computer that I wouldn't begin to know where to start but I have disabled all my browser add ons and accelerators and all my startup programs running in the background also. I also emptied the Temp. Internet file, etc. and reset my browser to it's default settings and still get the same reults.
I have my email scanning turned off with my anti virus software and I get no results for virus's or spyware with that or my spyware programs.

I'm not entirely sure what is going on here as I've never really worked with Outlook Express.

What happens is the person will get an email with an attachment. When I click on the email attachment (double click) to open it, excel, for example, will pop up and go to not responding. Yet, if I save it to the desktop and open it that way it works fine.

Any suggestions?

A:Slow browser, IE closing, Outlook and Yahoo closing

Hi Elise,
thank you. I ended up getting rid of PC Tools Internet Security and switching to AVG Basic Free. I think most of the major problems went away.
Yahoo has stayed up, Outlook has stayed up, browser seems to work quickly, facebook didn't have floating text and pictures anymore, was able to do some posting, sent some large emails. But, and not exactly sure, IE has frozen up, but not as often. The dds program you had me run this morning froze and I had to do a hard shut off, task mgr didn't respond and the weirdest thing of all, the clock stopped. Can't say I have ever seen that. So I am not sure what exactly is going on, if it really is malware or some setting is messed up. I wasn't able to run video on a site last night. Major improvement since I got rid of PC tools, but not quite right. Sorry, nontechie.

I am an old guy. I tend to like Outlook Express. Some years ago I finally got it customized in terms of text size and layout the way I like. I am used to it. But, it seems to have some kind of fatal flaw - that every year or so MS OUtlook Express's InBox gets corrupted and makes either or both sending or receiving email no longer possible. It is as if after working properly for a year or two the InBox file gets to a certain size and goes haywire. Is there any remedy for this? Is there a more stable version of Outlook Express or another mail program that is very similar but more stable than OE that I can import my settings into?

can anyone give me a step by step description, how i can export my Emails and the Address book from Outlook Express 6 to another Computer which runs also Outlook Express 6?
I tried already to export the Address book but it only allows me to export it as a *.csv-File and after i put the data on my usb stick and try to import it on my new computer by File - Import - Addressbook, the program keeps asking me for a *.wab-File? (btw: i can only use the: "Text File (Comma Separated Values))" Option, when exporting the address book.

Export and Import from email messages doesn't work either.

Has anyone a really step-by-step description how to do this??

Thank you very much in advance for your help

A:Solved: Import & Export from Outlook Express 6 to Outlook Express 6

Hi wizzle2003

When you are ready to Import the .csv file on the destination computer,
In Outlook Express,
File > Import > Other Address Book
You should then be given the option to choose a Text File (Comma Separated Values)
Then Browse to the .csv file to complete the Import.
Enable Show Hidden Files and folders:

Open My Computer,
Tools > Folder Options > View tab,
under Hidden Files and Folders, verify Show Hidden Files and Folders is selected.
Remove the check mark for Hide Extensions for known file types.
To locate the directory where Outlook Express keeps it's message store:
Tools > Options > Maintenance tab > Store Folder
Note the location, then Cancel out of the window.

Navigate to that directory, copy all the .dbx files to a folder on the Desktop.
Copy those files to a folder on the Desktop of the destination computer.
If you are using a Flash drive to transfer the files, it may take a couple of transfers to complete.

Once all the .dbx files are on the Destination computer,
Open Outlook Express,
Tools > Import > Messages > Microsoft Outlook Express 6 > Next
Select: Import mail from an OE 6 store directory
Click: OK
Browse to the folder containing the .dbx files on the Desktop.
When you reach the Finish button,
You should see a "Congratulations Your data was successfully imported"

If there is more than one Identity in Outlook Express, switch to the other Identities in Outlook Express and repeat the steps above.

Internet Explorer 8 has started crashing for no apparent reason, always after I try to close a tab. I get the "Internet Explorer has stopped working" message, and I can either wait and choose "close program" or just cancel it. Either way, the tab closes and IE continues to work. This always seems to happen at random times, and I can't find any similarities between the pages that cause these crashes. Any idea what could be causing this? I would switch to Firefox, but there are certain aspects to IE that I'm very reluctant to give up, so I'd only want to do that as a last resort.

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium x64.

Using Lotus 1-2-3 from Smart Suite 9.8 under Windows XP, I am working on three large data files (the smallest one is 14MB) that have a basic data sheet and then several other sheets that calculate tables from the basic data using mostly @dcount and @dsum functions. I can work with these files, calculate, save, etc., but when I try to close one of these files, Lotus crashes (I get the error screen that the program "has encountered a problem and needs to close"). It also crashes the same way if I click the "X" in the upper right corner of the window to close the program. This happens both on my laptop (Windows XP Pro) and on my desktop (SP Home). I don't think it is a memory problem, since I have 1.0 GB of memory on the desktop and 1.5GB on the laptop. Lotus closes all other files without a problem. Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

Hello all,
My PC makes me mad, it seems like I've been having problems with it ever since I bought it, some...7 years ago I guess? Anyway, this time it's even more annoying than most other problems I've had: it crashes when I close some programs, especially those that are using a lot of RAM. The typical case is when I close Firefox: I usually have at least 20 tabs (currently 27) open at once, and according to task manager (which I always have open) FF usually takes up about 300 Mo of RAM (or is that bytes, I'm not very computer-savvy). I have 4 Go of RAM installed though IIRC due to Vista 32 limitations, only 3 are effective? But I'm digressing; the point is, when I close Firefox, it, well, closes, I mean the window, but the process is still active in the task manager, and after a few seconds, my PC crashes. I think it sometimes gives me the BSOD, but most of the time the screen goes black and nothing happens anymore, with my PC still on.
Did some tests with other relatively high memory usage programs, and sure enough, when I close them, my PC crashes. Weirdly enough, it does it too when I close the Windows Picture Gallery (or whatever the default picture viewing tool is called in English. I'm using Vista in French).
Hope someone can help!

Hey Folks

I am trying to import OE5 .dbx files from a Win2k machine to a completely different machine (Win2003) with OE6. Everytime I try to import the DBX files I get an error message stating:

"No messges can be found in this folder or another application is running that has the required files open..."

The thing is I have even tried copying the DBX files from the old machine to the new machine and importing them from a directory on the new machine. I stil get the same message!

Another strange thing is the impor facility on OE6 does not provic an option import OE5 files, only OE4 & OE6.

I've already imported my mail accounts and address book, just not my messages.

Any ideas how to fix this?

Thx in advance.

A:How to import files from Outlook Express 5 to Outlook Express 6?

Hi Melissa, Welcome to TSG! First, make sure you can view hidden files and folders and do a search for your OE5 .dbx files. Find > *.dbx
Remember the location!

Then to import from OE5 into OE6, click
File > Import > Messages > OE6, then select "Import from an OE6 store directory" and Browse to the folder containing the OE5 *.dbx files. Make sure they are not set to 'read only'.

When I try to close Word 2002 after printing a document, I get the message "Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to close." If I choose to recover my work, Word reopens with a blank document like I had simply clicked on the shortcut (the title bar shows the file name as Document1). This does not happen if I open a file to read it or make changes without printing, but it happens every time after printing. I am thinking that there is an incompatibility between Word and my printer's software. The printer is an HP Deskjet F4580, and I have the bare minimum software install (just the drivers and software needed to use all of the printer's functions). The printer is connected through USB, and the computer is running Windows XP Home Edition SP3 and is fully updated. I would appreciate any assistance with this problem.
