I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Tracy,

Welcome to Lenovo Forums.

Please perform the below steps:

Hold power button down to turn laptop off.
Unplug, and remove battery. Hold down power button for ~ 30 seconds. Re-plug, without battery and see if you can boot to bios setup. (F1 or F2 key at Lenovo screen) If so, shut down again, and replace battery. Boot and see what windows does. And post the details of your laptop, model, and OS. (Operating system)

I hope the above information helps.

Regards,
Shashi

Hi kafri ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Would the same verstical line appear on an external display?
Having this line after drivers update, maybe we can try to uninstall (try to notice if the line dissappears) and then update the video drivers from the support site first. If the line is gone set drivers update to never.

Check if resolution settings and or changing scaling properties helps /ratio aspect helps.
Update us how it goes.

hi dharamc,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Have you tried checking this issue under the BIOS mode.
Power ON the computer and start hitting F2.

If the problem is visible under BIOS, then don't mind the driver as the problem might be the GPU or the LCD screen.
to isolate the issue further you can use an external monitor.

If the problem is not visible under an external monitor, then you have a problem with the GPU

Let us know your findings
Cheers!

Hello Lenovo,I'm a business management student from India.I purchased Lenovo Ideapad U310 Touch model this May from the US (through Amazon) and have been using it without any issues till the last month. Last month I noticed that the hinge had developed tension and there was additional pressure on the lid or the screen area while closing. I thought it would be a routine issue and took it to my college's hardware repair center, but they suggested I handle the issue via Lenovo Support as it required opening the laptop. When I checked Lenovo support through customer care (India), I was told that the U series is not covered by International warranty. But I checked if the Lenovo service center would still have a look at the issue, to which I was told that it would be chargeable. I thought it was fair enough and took the laptop to the service center in Jamshedpur this afternoon. To my utter disappointment, the technician was unable to open up the area near the screen (where the problem was supposedly), but he also got the screen cracked while trying to. Now I'm left with a laptop that cannot be used as even though the screen display is intact, the touch sensors detect screen touch near the cracked area and keep the cursor rooted to that point. Also, the issue with the hinge could also not be fixed. All to add to the woes, I will have to manage a few days (don't know how many) without a laptop and also shell out the expense from my pocket! Now my question is, will the screen for Ideapad... Hello you all,So I'm having this issue with my computer, I bought my laptop in 2014 and I got the screen broken due to malfunction of the hinges. I'd like to know if any of you know where I can get new screen assembly for my laptop. I know the warranty is really out of place, I tried to contact the Lenovo support in Brazil and they told me there's no part replacement available.

Long story short. My laptop is capable of running a resolution at 1280 x 800 but currently I am running at 1280 x 720 because when I turn on my laptop the resolution doesn't fill up the screen which ends up leaving a black vertical bar on the right side of the screen. (When I am in 1280x720 I have two black bars one running horizontaly on the top, and one vertically on the right side)  I am forced to use 1280 x 720 even though it's still broken because in 1280 x 800 the taskbar is hidden and a lot of my icons are hidden.  Now, the fix that I have for this was when I was booting up the laptop I would open and close the lid before the "start windows normaly" message would pop up, and it would usually have it filled up the whole way but now this fix doesn't work.  Anyone else have this problem?

Hi all,First post!  My Dad's Lenovo laptop goes to a black screen when starting up, so is unusable.I haven't seen it in the flesh yet but have started to research things for him and have found that 'black screen' shows up quite a lot for Windows 10 and Lenovo PCs! We were so impressed with my Dad's PC I've ended up with the same model myself:Lenovo YOGA 500 Convertible Laptop, Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 15.6" Touch Screen. Also labelled as: Yoga 500-15IBD Laptop (ideapad)  I see some people mentioning hardware failures and others device driver problems with the graphic card etc. but haven't read a definite cause/fix for this so far. I've just found this recent critical BIOS update for this PC which mentions the black screen problem:Software name: BDCN63WW Version 63[Important updates] Fix Win 10 lid close black screen issue.http://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/products/Laptops-and-netbooks/Yoga-Series/yoga-500-15ibd/downloads/D...I haven't seen this mentioned in the forums? Has anyone else used this?If the PC always boots to a black screen I'll obviously have trouble installing this! I'm hoping that it will boot in Safe Mode or I'm going to have some trouble installing it?! I don't know whether to install the BIOS update on my own machine which is running fine - I think I'll wait until I see my Dad's laptop first which will be in a few weeks. Has anyone had any experience of this BIOS update or other comments on this?Thanks. &nb... I'm still wondering about this... I've just updated the Lenovo Companion after seeing it mentioned in another thread. It looks like this s/w is supposed to scan the PC and recommend Lenovo updates - critical and nice to have ones. Initially the Companion was showing a critical update for Lenovo SHAREit and a recommended one for my BIOS. It says I'm currently on BDCN28WW and offered something like v61 and not the 63 I mentioned in my first post? After letting it update SHAREit and re-scanning the BIOS update is no longer being offered and still shows me on v28 ??? I'm not sure I trust this 'Companion' app!My laptop seems to be running fine so I don't want to break it updating the BIOS if it's not required. For all I know my Dad's broken one may be broken because it upgraded?! Does anyone else use/trust the Companion app?And has anyone else seen it change it's mind on recommended BIOS updates? Thanks.

I have Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit. So, these are my problems described in the title. I cannot change desktop from black, only can set a picture as a background.

When I am in pictures folder for example, I see blank or black thumbnails.
When I right click and go to personalize, I can see black themes instead of actual pictures.

I tried almost everything.
- reinstalling video driver
- clearing thumbnail from disk cleanup
- resetting dwm.exe
- going into safemode and then restaring into normal windows
- I tried fixing shell by using "fixshell"
- clearing & repairing registry errors
- ran an error checker
- ran a file checker

I have Microsoft Office 2010 - I heard that it could be the issue, but maybe I am not right, anyway...

I attached a print screen photo.

And, I am hopeless, any help please? Thanks

I noticed you're not running Aero. Click on last item, left side - "Troubleshoot problems with transparency...."

Office 2010 should not be a factor here. Public pics folder is empty - it should have sample pics in it.

I'm getting the black screen with movable cursor or KSOD (Black Screen Of Death) on Windows Vista.

What happens:
The system powers on.
POST
BIOS
Start windows normally
Windows splash screen
-> Black screen <-

What I can do:
I CAN enter BIOS and have reset the default settings.
I CAN press F8 to give me advanced boot options, but all options have the same result, apart from "Repair your computer".
I CAN load the "Repair your computer" option.
I CAN move the mouse around the screen.
I CAN press shift 5 times to get a dialogue to appear, but no control panel.
I CAN press the power button to shut down the system.
I CAN start up in safe mode, which is exactly the same, but with lower resolution.

I CANNOT seem to do anything else.

However, there are workarounds to accessing the hard drive:

I CAN use MSDaRT or the System Recovery Tool.
I CAN use the hard drive as an external USB hard drive on another machine.

What I've tried:
Startup Repair - Could not detect a problem.
System Restore - No restore points.
Windows Complete PC Restore - A valid restore location could not be found.
Windows Memory Diagnostics - No errors.
SFC Scan - No problems.
Stand alone system sweeper - No problems.
Hotfix Uninstall - Nothing to uninstall.

I also COULD do a partial or full "Packard Bell Recovery", which is essentially like reinstalling windows. I DO NOT want to do this.

I'm sure this is just a simple software issue real... Read more

I think I saw this post aver at Toms but I also think you gave some additional info.
I think what may be going on it during the switch from the windows low res video driver to the driver used in normal mode.

Since you can get into safe mode try to go to device manager.
Start|right click computer|properties|device manager.
Look in the display adapter.
Is there a yellow exclamation mark there?
Or is it showing the video that you know should be there?
Please post the video that the machine uses and or the PB model.

Hi, I have this 4 year old Lenovo Y560(config below)

The discrete graphic card has probably fried a long time ago, so last year when I did a clean install of Windows, I had to disable ATI Card permanently in the device manager using safe mode and used the Intel integrated card. A few days ago, I booted up windows only to encounter, "A disk read error has occurred, press ctrl+alt+del to restart" . I tried to boot up using WIN 7 install disc, but soon after the Starting Windows logo , the screen turns black and I am left with a cursor in a black screen. I tried to boot into Safe Mode but still I encountered a black screen with just the cursor .

I booted with Ubuntu live usb and was able to access all my partition and did back up and even formatted the Windows Partition. I tried to boot using a WinPe and faced the Black screen with a cursor again. I even reset BIOS to default, changed Graphics Adapter from "Discrete' to "Switchable' and vice-versa, but no effect at all. When I boot up using Ubuntu and ran lspci | grep VGA I can see both cards listed. I even tried to boot up using Windows 10 preview disk, still I get a black screen after the Windows loading screen.

I can't afford to buy any laptop presently since I am currently at college, so using Ubuntu for now. Is ther any way to install Windows 7 again? Is it possible to get the ATI Card working properly- reballing, reflow?

What other graphics adapter choices are available in BIOS setup? If you choose Switchable is there software on the Lenovo site for your model that's needed? Are you using the Display adapter software from there?

Have you tested your HD with the maker's HD Diagnostic extended CD scan, followed by a full Disk Check on a single disk partition you create?

Then work through the steps for Overcoming Windows 7 Installation Failures - Windows 7 Help Forums including trying an alternate install method (disk><flash stick) with new media. These steps overcome almost all install failures, so you'll be reasonably sure the problem is hardware or BIOS settings if nothing works. But don't skip any steps.

Try Clean Install Windows 10 Technical Preview to see if there's any difference with a more modern OS install. It's already a very polished OS and worth testing this.

I have been struggling with an intermittent problem for many months, and it is getting worse. I am running windows vista on a toshiba satellite laptop.

My screen will go dark (not quite as black as when the computer is off) when I am using it, and although the computer is still working, I cannot see the screen. Then, on startup, I can occasionally see flashes of the startup logo, which is enough to let me know it is loading. My cursor quits working as well.

After I run spybot in safe mode, and run it again at startup, it works for some time. (This last time was 2 days). So I believe I have a nasty virus. I run Norton 360 all the time, spybot rather frequently, and malaware bytes about once a month.

I am able to get it in safe mode by hitting the down arrow once, and hitting enter.

It is very frustrating. I don't think it is the video card, as it is repaired after spybot use.

Any suggestions?

That is weird situation I'd say. I am unsure what actually is the issue here, perhaps one way of finding what may be happening is having a look at your Event Viewer Logs. You can find Event Viewer, in Control Panel, Administrative Tools.

Also please follow these 8-steps, and post your logs at Malware and Virus Removal Forum for analysis. Regards

Hi there,

Am using a Dell Inspiron 6400 with XP. It'd been running ridiculously slowly recently so I started an AVG scan and AVG immediately threw up a file, which I then deleted, then I got a "fatal error" message flash up. Since then I havent been able to get to the log in screen, it merely goes to the black screen with cursor, and Safe Mode is just a black screen with Safe Mode in each corner. Ctrl Alt Del also doesnt work in Safe Mode for some reason, and I have no CD. Ho ho.

Anything I can do to fix this?

Thanks

Hello,

So on my computer, something strange happens when I uninstall UxStyle. It has broken my Windows install once and it has done it again. The first time, I kept on doing system restores to see what was the problem that made that black screen. After trial and error, I narrowed it down to UxStyle. So, I deleted Windows 8 and installed Windows 7, which is what I wanted in the first place. Now, I decided to triple-boot Windows 7 with Vista and 8.1, and it has succeeded. I reinstalled UxStyle thinking it was just a problem with my old Windows install, and then uninstalled it after a few days since I felt like the regular look was better. I rebooted Windows and the same effect happened.

So, I would like to know if I can get and replace those three patched DLLs with unpatched DLLs for Windows 8.1. Could I just change the broken ones to have .old next to them and then place the ones I get here there? Also, would sfc /scannow work?

A:UxStyle Black Flashing Post-Windows Update Black Screen

Hello lct01a, and welcome to Eight Forums.

A sfc /scannow will attempt to repair any modified or corrupted system files, so that would be a good first step.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - Run in Windows 8

Bit of a long story but here I go.

I have 2 Radeon 6950 with the crossfire thing set up, it's been working well for over 2 years.

Over the last few weeks I've been having issues, mostly while watching videos (usually HD and/or full screen). The video will freeze, the audio will loop, then eventually the screen goes black and I get an error message saying "Display driver has stopped working and has recovered".
Sometimes it didn't recover and I have to turn the computer off.

What's now happening is it will freeze at the windows start up. Then after resetting I will get to windows in very very low resolution and in black and white.

So I 're-seated' the cards. I couldn't notice any obvious damage to it except the fans were very dusty so I cleaned them.
Boot it up and I still get the black and white.
I checked the device manager and it said one of the cards was having problems, I uninstalled both drivers from that menu (not quite sure if I should have done this) and for whatever reason it's now working.

However it now seems one of my cards is not being recognised. Only one display adapter is shown in the device manager and AMD catalyst only recognises one card too.

What's the best course of action to determine what's wrong with what card (still not quite sure which one it is).

Hello there,

So as the title says, I'm having some problems with my computer. I bought it about 4 weeks ago, and no issues with it other than when I try to play an MMO that would make the graphics card work. The graphics card that is installed in the computer was separately bought and installed, so I'm thinking it might be conflict issues with the card, but I don't know.

The way it happens is, I run the games, I can play for anything from a minute, to 15mins and then my screen says it has disconnected from the image, goes black, and I can hear my computer restart, but my screen stays black. I have to manually power off and back on for my screen to start showing images again. Once restarted i get the "Problem Event Name: Bluescreen" thing.

It's really annoying since I just bought GW2 and I can't play properly any help would be appreciated.

Also, in the Action Center it's said that my Nvidia Graphics Card has stopped working or crashed, multiple times, naming the exact times my computer crashed.. which is why I believe it has to do with my card.

I recommend if you are overclocking any hardware, that you reset these values within the BIOS to their default values in order to increase the stability of your system.

Please run the following tests for your graphics card and RAM:
RAM - Test with Memtest86+
Run Memtest86+ for least 7-8 passes, and preferrly overnight as it can take a while to fully complete.

Test each RAM stick individually, if an error is found then move the same RAM stick into the next DIMM slot and test again, if errors are found for the same RAM stick in every available slot then you have a faulty RAM module. On the other hand, if no errors are found in the next slot or the other slots for the same RAM module, then you have a faulty DIMM slot.

I tried getting back to the desktop properties, but since the lettering is black I cannot read anything and I don't know where to click to change anything. Is there a keyboard shortcut I could use or some other way I can get back to a normal screen? I no longer have the XP disk, so cannot reformat.

I have just purchased a U310 Ideapad runnning windows 10 home, the first thing I did was take an image of the hard drive of the device in its state as just purchased ie without setting up the device or booting into the OS. I then proceeded to setup the device and all was well, I removed a lot of the bloatware but for some reason restored the saved image I had previously taken back onto the device obviously over writing the partitions which were there originally. Now OKR fails to find the original factory image, when I select the restore from initial backup option I get the message 'the program cannot restore the system partition because its structure is incorrect. You may have to recreate the partition to continue.' I am sure it is some easy fix to one of the partitions or something as I couldn't have done that much of a change, has anyone any ideas ?

So I cannot get the internal microphone to work on CS:GO or any steam game for that matter. Besides that I use a headset which I have set to default audio in but still doesnt work. can someone help??UPDATE: I tried to listen to what was going in the mic. I could hear the test sound that I made but afterward it made an eerie echo which kept on taking place for 20 seconds. This was with the headset, when I used the internal mic, the test sound was unrecognisable and the echoing was much more prominent. Is it a hardware issue?

Hello,I own a lenovo u310 notebook. Just recently harddrive broke, (made double check of that). And I cant be left without a laptop right now (linux booting from usb isnt an option. But I know theres ssd in this computer for caching purposes, can I anyhow use that ssd to install OS for a while? Problem is I cant access windows since hdd is broke (formated the harddrive in hopes of it to start working anyways), and booted linux or some partitioning tool like gparted doesnt detect the SSD. Still its there in bios boot options (ATA SSD1).So my question would be, Is there any way making SSD visible to some standalone formatting tool, and using the drive for installing os? edit: When trying to install debian the drive also doesnt appear.

Hey I need immediate help!

It's my sis' previously-formatted HP Pavilion dv5201tx! The problem is as the title above. I can go into safe mode. I've used system restore twice. And in Documents and Settings folder I noticed it has:

Administrator
Administrator.computer description name
Administrator.computer description name.000
username1
username2

Is it creating more user folders? At some point Administrator.computer description name.000 wasn't there. Corrupted registry hive? I'm not sure! Restarted many times, used Last known good configuration, and it's still black after the boot screen. Please help quick, she uses it a lot. Thank anybody so much..

Ok, so whenever I watch a video on my harddrive(.avi format usually) or if I watch a video off youtube, I will get a permanant black screen. My computer keyboard will not respond, and I will have to hard restart my computer.

My Graphics card is a Nvidia GeForce GT 220.

My driver is currently that of the one found here http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&os=4063&product=4003065

I tried the driver that the Nvidia website tells me to use;

http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7_winvista_64bit_196.21_whql.html

But that driver gave me previous problems found at;

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-7/896318-freeze-problems-after-installing-windows.html#post7161920

From what I have experienced, This "black screen" will occur if I use any form of flash player, if I use VLC media player, or Windows Media player. Oddly, from the couple of movies that I have seen on DVD format where I insert a DVD into my drive, the computer will not give me a black screen. I also play video games and have no problems from them.

Any ideas as to what the problem is?

EDIT: In addition, my monitor is supposed to have a drive, My monitor = Acer p224w, Im running Windows 7 64-bit. I was suggested that I should get a driver for it even though there is no available driver for it that is Windows 7 64-bit compatible. http://us.acer.com/acer/service.do?...tx1g.c2att92=453&ctx1.att21k=1&CRC=2054404012

Therefor, should I still DL a driver, and if so, w... Read more

A:Re: U310 Touch Hinge

I purchased a Lenovo U310 Touch last May and it has been working wonderfully until recently.  I've noticed in the last few weeks that every time I open or close the lid, the hinge makes a loud cracking noise and pops off at the ends. I can press the hinge cover back into place, but it just continues to pop off every time I open/close it. I contacted Lenovo Support about the issue, and even though my machine is still under warranty, they will not fix it without charging me because they have no proof I didn't break it myself (which I find absolutely ridiculous; I haven't dropped or damaged it in any way, and if you look at the computer you can clearly see it is otherwise in perfect condition.)That being said, has anyone else experienced this problem with the U310? Does anyone have any suggestions to fix it? I am concerned that it will just get worse and eventually affect my display.

Hello!

I've been having trouble with my Lenovo Ideapad U310 (running Windows 8.1) for quite some time now. Generally, it occurs once I try to reawaken the laptop after having had it on Sleep mode - the laptop freezes and then eventually the blue screen of death appears. I've been reading around the subject ever since it began, and I've tried enabling a hybrid sleep but no luck! I've tried updating all drivers but Lenovo is, quite franky, a bit rubbish at this. The error makes it a real pain to use my laptop at university etc, so I'm hoping someone can interpret the attached dump files for me!! I've only attached the last two but if you think more are needed, please let me know, as well as any other system details! ]

Cheers xo

Hi there,

Hopefully this is not in a thread somewhere else, I've tried to find one (believe me, cause I'm desperate..).
So in the middle of me writing my master thesis, my computer just decided to die on me two days ago. Luckily, I haven't been that stupid so I've got backups of everything concerning my thesis, but as you can imagine it is not a dream scenario to suddenly not have a computer at all.

Anyways, to the issue:

So what happened is this.
1. In the middle of writing a blue screen comes up, saying that there has been a problem. A sad smiley face "" came up (I thought to myself that this can't be true. And then it said (translated from Swedish): "A problem has occured on the computer. It needs to be restarted." Something about information about the occurrence being collected.. "..afterwards a restart will take place automatically."

It then added: "If you want more information you can search for this issue online later: KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR

It then restarted after some 30 minutes.

2. It started as normal (allthough a little slow), but then when I logged in almost none of my programs started. Any folder cannot be opened more than 15-20 seconds before it freezes a little bit and then just discontinues "explorer"/the folder and I'm back on the startscreen. Also, WIFI cannot be found whatsoever. Not that I cannot find WIFI, but it seems as if the actual WIFI on the computer just does not work. Or more like it doesn't even exist.... Read more

A:Lenono u310 w. W7 crashing on me

Here's more info on the KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR:  http://www.carrona.org/bsodindx.html#0x0000007A
Particularly, have a look at the Usual Causes section near the top.
This is often a hardware problem - so start with these free hardware diagnostics:  http://www.carrona.org/hwdiag.html
I'd start with the hard drive tests - but that's just a guess on my part.

Then, Please run this report collecting tool so that we can provide a complete analysis:  http://omgdebugging.com/bsod-inspector/
When done a Notepad document will open with the name of the file and it's location. (By default it'll be a .zip file located on your Desktop)
Simply upload the .zip file with your next post and we'll move on from there.

I bought this device 1 month ago, and several days after - the pc won't awake from sleep, getting into the "new" blue screen saying "driver_power_state_failure".

After restart, a msg came saying the Intel Rapid Start Technology wasn't enables.

1. I downloaded the IRST from Lenovo site, but once trying to install, I got a msg saying the my pc does not have the minimum requirements to be installed.
2. So I googled, and came up with something that says that that I need to enable AHCI in my Bios.
3. I went to the BIOS, and indeed the AHCI was enabled.
4. In the BIOS, also the Intel Rapid Start Technology was enabled.
5. However, its status was "INVALID".

Please, I have no idea where to go next. It seems my computer hates me...

A:Lenovo u310 driver_power_state_failure

If its a brand new computer i would call lenovo and find out about having it diagnosed under the warranty.or go to a computer repair place that repairs ibm/lenovo computers to find out the exact problem and go from there.if its an authorized lenovo reseller they will be able to advise you further.

Hello, I purchased a U310 Touch about 15 months ago that is no longer under warranty. Every time I try and boot the machine I receive no response from the machine. The power light turns on, the fan spins, the HDD turns on but the screen never displays anything. Even when I close the clamshell the machines power button stays lit and won't shut off unless I kill the power by holding down the power button. My troubleshooting steps have been:Reset RAMUnplug battery from motherboardWait for battery to completely drainBoot with HDMI monitor to see if anything displays (nothing would, so LCD panel should be good) With all of these, I cant get the machine to fully function. It feels like the machine is in total sleep mode, I feel like it needs a new motherboard. With my experience with lenovo I feel like this will be the last machine I ever purchase from them, this is unacceptable for a laptop of this age.  Does anyone have any similar situations? If so did you purchase a new motherboard and was it good to go? I'm very comfortable with ripping machines apart since I used to work on a help desk. I would hate to spend $100 on a part and waste all that time if it wont fix the issue.  Any help is greatly appreciated.Thank you.

A:U310 Touch Won't Turn On

Hi overtheborder and welcome to the community,

What OS are you running?  Maybe two things you can try depending on the OS.

Remove the hard drive and see if it boots to the bios.

Try booting a usb flash drive with linux.
