Q: S400u laptop ideapad S series : my keyboard not working one single key not working

Hello.I am facing problem and I am kindly asking this forum some help. The letter A not working on my keyboard. All others are working. Windows 8.1 single language is my S.O.I currently have Windows updates being approved.I have a paid firewall software/antispam. This is a headache. I used then the virtual keyboard to solve some situations where none keyboard was closely available but it is workaround solution and does not help for logon/login.I am right now using an external keyboard to write this kindly request to the community.Things I have tried: I already turn-off, remove battery and charger and, pressed power button for 10 sec. Place battery and A/C charger back and no result. I aldo run a full testing using Lenovo System Center and I got ok and gren mark. This issue or incident happen few days ago. There were some Microsoft Windows updates I got via web. I indeed have also restored the system to few days ago prior to such Microsoft Windows Updates . Also this unfortunatelly not work and I also cleaned any possible dust on keyboard. Needless to say this "kind and trick problem" emerged during the black fryday. Thanks in advance.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I wrongly donwloaded a Lenovo system update 5 (for Thinkpad  notebook) in my Ideapad S400u notebook. This happen several weeks ago, I have not realized of such wrong thing I did and the months have passed by since then.If I knew this thing happened before I could have use Windows 8.1 to return the Operating System to a point in the past, not now when so many things were added by Windows/Microsoft.  However I realized it and the reason I stopped by this forum is because I could not find any relevant information at Lenovo Support page and I want Lenovo/Forum to kindly inform the all detailed steps to remove any Thinkpad unwanted software/etc from  my notebook. Provide additional information that would allow me to make sure the correct Lenovo Ideapad component/module/etc  that runs the Lenovo Ideapad S400u System Updated, specifically designed for this model,  will be up and running. Thanks.

A:S400u Ideapad S-Series S400u Wrongly download a ThinkPad System Update.

Lenovo System Update version 5 supports various machines. Actual updates are from a system update catalog which is based on your operating system installed and your machine type. What type machine do you have?  20195, 4582,80BY, etcYou can look in microsoft sysinfo utility, line 7 for this information. What OS are you using? win 7,8, 10?   With windows 10 and the Companion app, Su catalogs are built for ideapads.Companion uses the same SU catalog as TVSU version 5.You did NOT get a thinkpad update for your machine unless the SU catalog for your machine is not correct. Please provide your OS +machine type and I will locate your SU catalog, if it exists.

Hey all,
Before begining to explain how it got fixed it, please get to know what was wrong first. Here's the text of the original blog I posted months ago:

Dear all,
These (MJU7NHY6) keys in my laptop dell (Inspiron 11-3000 series) keyboard stopped working this May 13. They wouldn’t function unless pressed so hard.
The onscreen keyboard is working fine. I updated the keyboards driver but it didn’t help. I’m sure that no liquid was spilled over the keyboard. Maintenance shops where seem they can’t help. Some said would give it a try but that there’s a chance it may screw up the whole. Please advise what to do. Enclosed is a snapshot of the keys in questions.
I appreciate your advice.
Best

Here's the fix: Please note that I'm not an expert in whatever has to do with laptop and my suggestion here, however crazy it sounds, shouldn't be taken for granted. So, here's how it was fixed. I was carrying my laptop while switched off with the lid closed the other day in hand while heading to my bedroom when the laptop accidentally fell to the ground (some 8-10 feet long).... Read more

Hi,
I purchase this Dell Inspiron 15 5000 Series 15.6 Inch Laptop last December and it was great to allow me to interchange the use of touch screen and keyboard with mouse. Suddenly a couple weeks ago, the keyboard and mouse were not recognized by the system when I turned on the laptop. I got the touch screen working but I need to use keyboard and mouse most. Any advice on how to fix it?
Many thanks! Jade.

Just sharing...My keyboard stopped working one day. It sometimes worked when I started the computer but stopped working after that. I followed instructions, and updated the drivers to no avail. On youtube I saw a few video regarding problems with windows 10 and the keyboard not working. I had installed windows 10 about a month before my keyboard stopped working. The video states you must go to the settings, ease of access, and keyboard.  Within keyboard you just change the various switches as instructed. I restarted my computer and to my amazement it worked. I'm just putting it out there should anyone be facing the same problem.

so yesterday afternoon, I was watching a youtube video and realized that the spacebar was no longer functioning as a play/pause button. I then realized that none of the other keys were working other than the power button. I followed the troubleshooting steps here. I did the last step, which seemed to work for a short time, yet when I went to youtube again and used the touchpad to forward the video, the keyboard stopped working again. I went to do step 3 again, but this time, it would continuously enter one letter. I shut down my laptop 3 times, and the same thing happened all 3 times. finally, I let the battery drain and powered it on this morning. the keyboard can no longer be fixed by use of step 3. I am using the on-screen keyboard now which is very time-consuming and which has been working throughout this entire process.

Hi mgloria,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Would connecting an external USB keyboard work?

As mentioned on the guide, " If failed keys do not work, the issue should be PC hardware issue with high possiblity" , you may need to call in technical support for the issue.

Update us how things go.

Hello everyone, I just bought a Lenovo IdeaPad Y510P (the non-SLI model), and I've noticed some weird behavior with the keyboard. It does work - like in BIOS, the FN+F1,F2, etc. combinations, and in DOS (before I installed Windows 8.1). But after installing Windows 8.1 the keyboard has stopped working. It still works in BIOS, which sort of leads me to believe that it's a software/driver issue.  Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

hi msimionescu,

Welcome to the Forums.

If the keyboard is working fine on the login screen and then suddenly stops functioning when you get to the desktop / metro screen then the problem might be with the Filter Keys - similar to this thread.

Try to turn off Filter Keys by going to Control Panel > Ease of Access > Ease of Access Center > Make the keyboard easier to use > uncheck Turn on Filter Keys then hit apply.

If same problem, you may want to consider doing a  Refresh / Reset.

I have had my laptop for a few months now. A yesterday I turned on my laptop and the physical keyboard and mousepad were not working. The on-screen keyboard worked fine but nothing from the keyboard at all. I restarted it and the mousepad worked. I know there is power to the keyboard because the lights on it the power button works. I have updated Windows, no luck. I have updated all drivers, through Lenovo and other driver updating software, no luck. I have powered down, hard started etc. everything and no luck.I have even uninstalled and deleted the drivers, still no luck. When I boot to BIOS the trackpad and keyboard work fine, so this is clearly a software issue with Windows 10. If anyone else has experienced this or has any insight please please come to my rescue!  I really need the computer as I am currently doing my thesis and my panel defense is in a few weeks, and everything is done online, so this is a huge issue for me! Thank you in advance for anything you can offer!

Hi everyone, My little sister's ideapad 100S was playing up - unfortunately I wasn't really paying attention and just told her to restart it. Now the keyboard is not working as it should. As far as I can tell, the only buttons that are working are I, enter, tab, and the space bar. I've tried the on-screen keyboard and plugged in an external keyboard, and it is exactly the same. Restarting does not help. I cannot log in to check the drivers, etc. There has been nothing spilt on it, nothing downloaded to it - no variables at all, as far as I know.  Any advice?!  Thanks!

I was playing a video game on my laptop around 4:30, when the keyboard suddenly stopped working. The mouse still functioned, so I tried clicking around to see if it was just a problem with the game. Then at 4:32, the mouse stopped working, too. I decided to try turning it off, but neither holding nor pressing the power button worked, so I unplugged the laptop from the charger and left it to run out of power on it's own. At 4:35, the display froze. I know this, because up until then the clock was still working. Currently, the vent fan is still running, and the screen is frozen. No keyboard buttons work, and neither the built-in trackpad nor an HDMI mouse is working.  Is there anything I can do to fix this, or do I need to send it in?The laptop was a brand new Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Series, with Nvidia GeForce GTX and an Intel Core i7.

Hi, the latptop is only about 2.5 months old now... 3 weeks ago randomly the keyboard's keys on the laptop itself stopped working. No clue why, Ive checked drivers, did a reboot, tried safe mode, etc... It's only on the laptop itself. The keys that work are tyhg caps lock num lock and maybe a couple others... Ive never spilled anything on the laptop nor have I ever dropped it. I was in love with this laptop for the price I paid for it at Best Buy until the keyboard stopped working on it... It just randomly happened and I'm not sure why. The keys don't appear to stick or anything like that... (normal keystrokes just nothing happens in result of clicking them) I am using a keyboard plugged into it right now... I really need to get this fixed and I'm very upset at the fact it happened just 2 months after the purchase... So that cancels out my bestbuy 1 month warranty right there. I really can't deal with this much longer considering the fact that I was planning to use this laptop for my work.. If I can't get a simple easy fix I will have to find something new somewhere else... sorry to say. Praying for an easy solution/fix.

On my Ideapad 320, the entire keyboard stopped working except some function keys at the top (brightness, volume, etc). An external keyboard works fine. I've tried suggestions on other posts about this, such as updating/uninstalling the keyboard driver, resetting BIOS/UEFI settings to default, enabling and disabling filter and sticky keys, and i've reset my computer more times than i can count. Nothing has worked. Sometimes, the Caps Lock light on the keyboard will turn on, and will occasionally turn off/on when i press the button a bunch (usually with a delay before it'll respond) The problem only started after i downloaded the game Overwatch today, but i tried uninstalling it to see if that'd help and it did nothing. I didn't spill anything on it, drop it, or even get crumbs in the keys. I've only had this laptop for almost 7 months. I'm at my wits end and can't find any other possible solutions to try. Please help.
