Q: more n00b assignment help

hey everyone!

I need help working out a few more bugs in this code for my most recent assignment. this program's purpose is to input an integer and return it reversed.

the code i got so far is:

import java.util.Scanner; // Imports the java utility so we can use the Scanner class to receive input.
public class ReverseStringProject
* Get string, run reverse method, output reversed string
* @param args
public static void main(String[] args)
Scanner in = new Scanner(System.in); // Declares the new Scanner which looks for input (System.in)
String theString = new String(); // Creates a blank String, which the user's input will go into.

System.out.println("Enter a string: "); // Prompts user for input
theString = in.nextLine(); // Sets the user's input (in.nextLine()) to the string theString.

theString = reverseString(theString); // Function to be made that will reverse the string given.
System.out.println("The reversed string is: "+theString);

* Will take any given string, and return the reversed of the string.
* @param theString The string variable sent to it to reverse
* @return the reversed string
public static String reverseString(String theString)
String charString = new String();
int stringLength = 0; //variable to store length of the string
int stringLength1 = theString.length();

for(int i = stringLength-1; i >= 0; i--)
charString += theString.charAt(i);
return charString;
thanks in advance for the help! ive been stuck on this assignment for weeks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

kay, so. Earlier today my computer randomly stopped outputting sound. For all intents and purposes, the computer was trying to output sound (EQ bars were fluctuating and such) but I couldn't hear anything. I did the driver thing, the different cable thing. All that. So I figured it must be an internal hardware thing and opened up my case.

That's where things went bad.

I attempted to switch my computers sound from the back panel to the front. (the guy who built my PC said that only one would work at a time) Now, I'm not sure what I did, because I was pretty sure that I hadn't just unplugged stuff at random, but for some reason, when I tried to plug my PC back in, it wouldn't boot properly. Let me run you through what happens when I try to turn it on.

LEDs are ON.
MOBO light is ON.
Fans turn ON, EXCEPT for the one on my GPU. (That one goes on for a sec then stutters)
MOBO does NOT beep, at all.
Things I attempt to plug in via USB (speakers, mouse, keyboard) DO NOT get power.
DVD-Rom drive WILL NOT open, but little light is ON.
Monitor light is AMBER.

What do you think I might have done? ANY help in this matter would be GREATLY appreciated.

Ive got a 50 gb IDE drive and a 2x150gb RAID 0 array with xp pro installed on a partition on the RAID and Win2k on another partition on the RAID also. But the problem is thati had a broken version of XP pro on the IDE drive aswelll- i have already removed it from boot.ini. i was rather distressed to find that the IDE drive was marked as my system drive so all of my boot files -boot.ini and ntldr were on that drive. i want to install SUSE 9.2 on the IDE drive but im scared that it will kill my system files since the SUSE installer reformats the drive which it is installed on. Is there a way to move the system driveyness of my IDE drive onto my RAID array so i am free to reformat the IDE drive? i have a norton ghost image of the IDE drive but there is no point since the OS that is on that drive is broken

what firewall are you using? enable it and don't disable for anything unless you disconnect completely from the internet.. when using the internet for the first time with your firewall it shouild have asked you if you wanted to allow Internet Explorer (or Firefox or whatever browser u use) to access the network, when it asks just say allow. if it still doesn't work post back..

I am a network newbie. What are the benefit's of a small home network, like 2 computers networked together? Also can they share internet access without paying extra or something like that. I know they can share a printer, which is awesome. But are there any other benefits? And also what will I need to network two computers together (Both are XP Home Edition) Thanks for your help. Sorry for my noobness.

A:Network n00b

You'll need an ethernet adaptor card (network card) in each PC. XP has the necessary software as standard. You could just put a cross-over network cable between them and you'd have a network (rather limited as it's a network of two!).

But if you want internet access then you'll need a router and broadband modem (or a combined modem/router). Plug each PC to the ports on the router, plug the router to the modem and the modem to the phone socket.

You can share the printer, share drives across the (2 or however many PCs you want to have on your LAN) PCs and all PCs on the LAN have access to the internet via the router and modem. You have, and pay for, a single internet connection. If we are talking a DSL connection here on your existing phone line then you can continue with normal (talk) usage of your phone line while the internet is being used.

The list goes on, shared network storage devices and backup devices, your other PCs don't have to be XP (Win 98, ME, Win2K, Linux, etc, are all equally accessible), etc.

If you don't like or can't run cabling you can do all of the above on a wireless LAN (just use a wireless router and put wireless adaptor cards in the PCs instead of (or in addition to) wired ethernet adaptor cards).

I was adviced by my friends to come here, and enter this thread - HJT LOG.

I've been getting alot of random pop-ups lately, and my CPU usage always goes to 100% even when nothing is actually open - nothing in the background ie. No msn etc.

I used Spybot: Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware SE to scan. This got rid of most of the pop-ups. I then went to use HJT.

Hello,, and welcome to TSF!

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Let's look for, and delete, any program segments(prefetches) that might be present, and are associated with the 'problems' we're trying to remove from this system. To do this, let's:

1) Click "Start | Search", then search for each of these program's base name(s), in all files and folders:

No DMP files included in the upload please try this method.

To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

The procedure:

* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.

To ensure minidumps are enabled:

Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump.
OK your way out.
Reboot if changes have been made.

Alright, I'm planning to build my own computer and am going use my old 160 GB Hard Drive. Now my question for you folks is: since I'm using my old Hard Drive will I still have Windows XP installed? Sort of a stupid question but it need carifying, thanks!

A:n00b question

You most likely cannot arbitrarily take a boot drive from one machine and install it in another and expect it to work since the precise hardware configuration will not be the same in both machines in most cases so that the correct drivers etc. will not load. You would be better off reinstalling the OS on the old disk once installed in the new machine having first backed up any required files and making sure you have all the required application installation media.

Hi... Okay, so I am REALLY desperate right now! (Hence my username.. Lol.) My PC has just been hijacked. Completely. Taken over by worms, trojans, viruses and I dunno what, really... I'm a total n00b when it comes to this kind of stuff, unfortunately. But I've done some research, and tried to figure out what the problem consists of...

See, the thing is that I am currently unable to log into my own, administrative windows-account. I write the password, click enter, and everything appears to be allright, except but the fact that it is not. My computer TRIES to log in. And my desktop-background appears. Then it ultimately FREEZES, just like that. No icons appear. The start-menu is not available. And I end up having to switch off the machine by using the main switch, because it gets ALL frozen up... Btw, I always get the same error-message, telling me that it cannot start because of some problem with something called 0xc0000005.

So, what I do now, is, I have managed to log into my GUEST-account. The one that is without a password. And that one, strangely enough, never freezes. But it has no administrative rights, and I dunno what to do, because it won't let me install any anti-virus-programs. Or anything else, for that matter.

As I've said, I have already done some research. And I figured out that the 0xc0000005 probably appears BECAUSE of all the malware that is destroying my PC. I searched some other page, and it told me that certain types of malware are... Read more

here's my story:

I just bought an Acer netbook about two months ago. it came with XP and I'm not too happy with it. Not that XP is bad or anything, I just wanted something newer, like Vista.

Well, I always have to update things and see new things so it's about time I get a new OS on here and I want Seven. Some friends of mine have brought up the fact that most new computers come with Vista (previous to Seven coming out) and I should look into seeing if Windows can upgrade me to Vista for a discounted, if not free, price seeing as my computer is brand new.

Another friend mentioned to me that I can get an upgrade from XP to Seven for around $10 and when I researched that, I saw that it was an upgrade from Vista to Seven that was that much.

Now, I'm a student so I can get Windows 7 for about $30 which I'm willing to pay but I just wasn't sure if I missed something and there is a way to get an upgrade for being stuck with XP.

If anyone knows anything, please let me know, as I'm about to purchase it for the student price in a few hours.

A:help! total n00b.

Vista was never offered on Netbooks....hence the reason that it came with XP. Vista was simply too much of a resource hog to run on netbook computers. You can however switch to Windows 7 if you are interested...it's much easier on resources.

I was wondering if you could help me with my bitty computer problem.

I'm running on an essentially brand-new Compaq Presario (my father's replacement for the 7-year-old Dell that's pretty much dead). It couldn't delete it, and me being the really, really stupid person that I am, deleted it by hand. So, long story short, after many attempts to fix it, with help from various people in residence, I ended up running a system restore on my computer. That should have been all fine and dandy, but now, when I start up my computer, aside from starting up slowly, I get the following message: Runner file name (Compaq Connections.exe) lacks a '-'. All of my documents and programs remained intact (with just a few exceptions). As well, the computer acts extremely slow, with programs freezing for up to 2 minutes at a time. I've run virus scans with Norton, McAfee and AVG, as well as spyware searches with Ad-Aware, Spybot Search & Destroy, SpySubtract, Spyware Blaster, and CCleaner. Absolutely nothing has shown up. However, Windows Task Manager tells me that I have 55 (give or take) processes running, with a PF Usage of around 565 MB (I have a RAM of 504 MB), which really isn't right. - All other devices work on the wifi; disabled some devices in case it had too much traffic

The weirder part is that certain downloads that required internet would on occasion work, but the browsers never do and then it goes right back to my yellow caution sign friend.I've made sure it's not the browser itself; I have both Chrome and Explorer and neither of them want to do anything.

I've tried ping'ing Google or what not and at first it will tell me it can't find the host. One time, it sent the 4 and then came back with a 100% loss, but I just did it again and it came back with a 0% loss? I didn't do anything in that t... Read more

Hey guys;

As the title says, I am new to motherboards. I want to learn about motherboards. So tell me anything you guys know about motherboard. Which one is better? How do you distinguish it from one another? How do you know which is the best one? What all these numbers mean? For example,"ASUS P4P800 SE 865PE S478 800FSB DUAL DDR AGP 5PCI" what all these numbers represent? Is there any site which explains everything about motherboards? I am interested in learning about them.

thanks guys.

Okay. I've figured out a lot of things for editing photos, but for the life of me... I don't know how to take one photo and it apply it over/behind another photo to combine the two.

I figured out how to add a few borders, but they were specially made files and I was able to find my way around with adding them in the background and dimming them.

But For Example: What if I had a photo of myself that I wanted to add a little tiny heart to, from another jpeg?

I'm using Photoshop 7. Any directions or links would be appreciated.

A:Photostop: N00b question

To do that, you could select the heart with the lasso tool,then simply copy & paste as new layer in the other image
With other images, you will probably want a more professional approach, here's a useful link...

Ok, I'm not sure if this is the right thread, but I'm positive if its not I'll be moved to the correct one.

I've never burned a DVD movie (really never had a need) so please be kind

I recently attained a 4X dvd Re-writer USB 2.0 from a firend who'd like me to burn them a dvd movie from home vids. His DVD player doesnt support VCD so he asked me to help him get it on DVD. I've ripped the movies into the pc and had them origionally formatted in DIX.

I used TMPGEnc to rip the files down into (what I think) is a dvd format.
I have the following files

I only have 1 blank DVD so I need to get this right the first time!
Now, can I just burn these 3 files onto a dvd and the player will pick them up as a standard movie using easy cd creator? Do I have to create a menu system (I'd rather not)? Is all lost and I'm a fool for doing this?

Any input would be appreciate.

I use a DVD+RW disk for experiments, so that I don't have to get it right the first time.

Hey all I am wanting some basic advice about taking and printing my digital photo's

I have had a digital camera for some time now a FujiFilm Finepix 4800Zoom is old now, but it was the mutts nuts when I got it.

While I have had the camera for a while I have not ever got round to printing any photo's, but now I would like to start having some around the house.

I would like some tips on how to go about touching up the photo's and what sizes/resolution to print in for best results.

The sort of stuff you guys would probably do in your sleep, but this is all new to me.

I am using Adobe Photoshop CS and am ok in it and am technically competent on my machine.

A:Digital Photography n00b

Yes, it was the "mutts nuts" when you got it, but not now. Here are some basic tips.

1. You aren't to get great results (because of the pixel count) on prints that are larger then 5X7----8X10 will be so-so.
2. Most pics need sharpening---you can do this in any of the decent photo-editors. In Photoshop CS, its under the filter menu and says unsharpen mask---experiment with different percentage settings
3. By high quality photo printing paper---I use Canon but its always a good idea to use the paper that your mfgr offers.
4. I keep my resolution set to between 240-300
5. A good printer makes a big difference---I use the Canon S9000--has six seperate printing cartridges and is very quick

Again, your 2+ megapixel camera kind of limits you in terms of print size.

Hey all,

N00b to W7 as the title says, and I've got to say that I really like it.

Had Vista on my laptop previously and had a lot of problems with FireFox and Chrome crashing on me and not being able to kill either of them and having to do hard reboots.

A few other problems with certain programs here and there, but nothing major but it was the brower problem that made me choose to upgrade as I like to surf a lot and I was having to hard reboot 3-4 times an hour sometimes.

To me it appears that MS haven't changed a lot on the surface, and I must say that I feel pretty comfortable using W7 already.

The whole thing does feel faster than Vista, the boot time, the start up of programs, and a few other things.

The only problem I've come across so far is that I use a 3 Dongle to access the net, and it installed fine, but couldn't get connection, I kept getting the message that 3's program couldn't find a connection.

But then when I installed my T-Mobile Dongle, and used the 3 dongle through the T-Mobile connection software it worked fine.

Infact I think overall I am getting better speeds than I did on Vista too, but I can't say for definate until I've been using it for a few weeks.

Overall I am really happy with my purchase and don't at all feel begrudged that I have paid out for an OS that is pretty similar to the previous version.

But time will tell though as I know from previous experience that after a few months will be the real test!

Is there a specific player I need?

I was just wondering if UltraDMA and ATA are the same port, I was looking at a new mobo that had UltraDMA 133/100, but my HD is ATA100.

A:kind of n00b question but..

ATA is the port. UltraDMA is a kind of IO done through that port. The people who wrote that UltraDMA thing were just ignorant.

So, I just bought this 32 port and another 24 port switch for a big lan party i'm having....I managed to hook the two together via their uplink ports, and, well, when I plug my comp into one of the jacks, it says "limited or no connectivity" So, my question is, how would I configure the TCP/IP settings? I know the subnetmask is, and the ip address is 192.168.1.xx, but what about the default gateway and DNS servers? Do I put anything there? At the last LAN party I went to, I had this same problem and someone showed me how to do it, but I forgot Any help would be appreciated!

A:n00b switch question

Well first, don't set ANY of that manually. The router should assign you all the IP info. If that's not happening, DHCP is screwed up, or else you have a bad cable or bad port.
If other PCs connected can get dynamic info, so should you, or setting static info won't help.

Try a new cable, and a new port. Make sure your NIC settings are all set to auto, and make sure you don't have firewall software interfering.

Good luck!

Hello, (be gentle im a noob @ building PC's)

A few months ago i had a computer store build a computer for me...

MSI k8n neo2 platinum mobo
AMD 3500
x2 1gb corsair XMS ddr400 pc3200
ATi x800pro
SB audigy
WD 120gb HD
windows xp home edition
floppy & cdrom, and dvdRW bla bla bla

So now its time to update my GPU, which i have done many times before on older systems
inorder to do so i need a new mobo...never done before (card requires pci 16x slot)

new parts will be:
ASUS A8R-MVP ATi (crossfire, incase i want a 2nd gpu)
ATi X1800XT
and a new psu ASUS atlus 550w

I am pretty familier on how to use the BIOS...memory settings, OCing, and voltages...
The hardware installation seems pretty simple (by the mobo user guide) but should i do anything to my HD before i rip everything out and put it on the new mobo, like uninstall some things???
I will ofcorse uninstall my current gpu (drivers/control center)
But im not quite sure how i would go about installing windows....does it get installed to the MOBO? or is it on the HD (confused) and anyother things i should do to my current setup before starting to rebuild...
also ive read that removing the heatsink and processor may be a bit challenging?

Any help is much appreciated

My first thread here, so here goes...

I have a WD Caviar 160GB 7200 HDD SATA. I see that RAMDisk can help performance by using some of the hard drive space as RAM. Now, here's my question -- is RAMDisk meant for only SSD drives or will it boost my performance with use on a 7200 spinner through SATA?

A:n00b RAMDisk Question

Lol I've activated my 3 gigs of RAMDisk through Ready Boost -- will this do anything for me or am I just being asinine?

*edit: i actually disabled this now -- it was making my HDD go berzerk.

I was surfing the net and everything, when suddenly all my windows closed, and shortcuts to antiyspware junkcame up. Being the idiot I am, and havig constant spyware problems, I clicked it and downloaded the antispyware DESPITE THE FACT THAT I ALREADY HAVE MCAFFEE AND VIRUSSCAN! Yes, I am an idiot. Anyway, it ended up downloading a trojan... I try to get rid of it, but no success! It sends me popups and warnings about spyware, and tries to get trojan programs into my system, which are (thankfully) stopped by my antivirus program. I tried to get rid of it on my own, but ended up accidentally deleting my audio drive (which I was able to reinstall thankfully again) ...uhh... I havent recieved any trojans or popups in about 20 minutes now, so I think that part's over, BUT considering the fact that no matter what I set my homepage to, it sets it to blank, and bounces it to the site. For diagnosis purposes, I'll give you the site. The one I ended up istalling is PestTrap... What a PEST! http://www.securityuptodate.net/
...oh! It tried to get trojans in again! If it helps, they're called 0000a270.EXE
Help ASAP would be nice. I'd like to say I'm not a N00B really, but that'll probably just make me look like more of an idiot... Now if you'll excuse me, I have to yell at myself for being so rash and stupid.

A:Darn Trojan! (I am such a N00B Sometimes!)

...hmm.. actually, I think I've actually got both a Trojan AND an annoying program that overtakes my computer here. I might be wrong, but I don't think they're related... I'm virus scanning now, but any extra help would be nice, as I've tried uninstalling the crud to no avail.

what I am wondering about is the physical process involved.

I have 3 hdds i want to overwrite (not including my current hdd). Is it safe to hook them up one by one to the computer which I am currently running? Will I then be able to wipe them in windows?

Any help is appreciated.

Yes, just hook them all up at once, and load up disk management. Right click on the partitions and select delete. This will erase the HDDs.

im new to XP, and i have some questions:

Dell Dimension 8200
winXP home
256 RDRam PC800
note: i was given this computer, and i dont think it was even turned on ... it was given to us by my dad's friend ... i first turned it on, and it had me setup the users, and all ... so i dont think it was even turned on .....

1. this activation. i see no where in the OS that it tells me to activate it. someone said reminders would come up, and there is a link in the accessories folder to activate winXP. but i see no link, and there has been no reminders to activate it. how do i know if its been activated and all?

2. reactivation. i heard that if you change the hardware configuration of the mobo (installing new hardware like wireless PCI card, etc etc), you have to reactivate it? is this true? (which will suck if i do, cuz all my PCI slots are aleady used up straight from the factory, so i have to uninstall a modem, or the PCI network card to install a wireless PCI network card)

3. any good winXP Home sites to check out for tips, tweaks and all?

4. winXP users. it only has an option to change an account to Administrator, or Limited. there isnt anything else i can change it to? (dont want my dad screwing up the computer or anything with stuff he does). it doesnt seem to have the user options that win2k had ... is it winXP Pro that has these options?

i think those are the questions of the top of my head. im sure that as i get to play with XP, ill have more ..... Read more

A:n00b to winXP...questions ....

1. Dell uses an OEM version of XP and pre-activates the system for you when it is installed.

2. OEM installs are usually tied to the bios chip on the Motherboard. When this is done, then the only thing you have to worry about is replacing the motherboard or Bios chip on the Motherboard, so in your case, just changing out cards will have no effect. Even on none OEM systems, you can change out 6 components before re-activating if one of the Components is a Network Card, if one of the components is not a Network Card, then I believe that it is 10 components.

3. http://www.tweakxp.com
I am sure that there are more XP tweak sites out there, but those are the ones that I have used.

4. We use XP professional, so this one I don't know about.

for whatever reason I disabled my onboard graphics driver, then proceeded to disable the VGA driver. Now windows loads (the Welcome sound is all present) but with no picture!

Safe mode doesn't get very far at all - it hangs on loading some driver. Last known good config just loads windows but again, no display. Load in VGA mode just does the same.

Do i need to do a reinstall? I have also lost my windows disk. Damn it!

Been running a Viewsonic LCD 720 on my desktop machine with Windows XP Professional for about 5 years with no problems with video card being a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. Never had a display issue.

Recently the display has been showing 3-4 color panels running vertically with XP running below it. I hadn't made any display setting changes or installed any new drivers or video software (that I know of). Seems to be a bug/virus of some sort. Swapped out the monior with a CRT and the issue remained so I know its not blown pixels or a physical issue with the display.

It has progressively worsened to where I cannot see anything behind these panels and it "smears" into everything else on screen. I can't even see enough to try and download drivers, etc. In the initial stages, when I could see decently, tried system restore in windows to try and restore any old settings but this did not fix the issue. Also tried adjusting the settings on the actual monitor such as ato adjust, etc and this did not fix the issue.

What steps should I take, now that I am essentially blind? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all!

ok not sure if this is the place cos this is a load of "What Is" questions

any answers would be nice XD

1)What Is a Molex?
2)what is Ide
3)what is the difference between:
A)a floppy Ide
and B)CD Ide
Or C)HDD Ide

Uba N00b

A:some completely random n00b questions

Molex - a type of plug used to attach power cords to the components inside a pc.

IDE - a type of data cable connector used to connect hard drives and disk drives to the motherboard

There is no difference between a CD IDE cable and a HD IDE cable. Both CD drives and Hard Drives use the same type of cable to connect them, and you can connect up to two devices (Two HD's, two CD drives, or one of each) on a single IDE cable.

Floppy IDE cables are smaller than the HD/CD types, and only work for floppy disk drives.

IDE cables are an 'older' style of cable, which is now commonly being replaced with SATA cables, since they are smaller, thinner cables that allow for easier cable routing and better airflow inside the computer case. SATA drives are typically quieter and more efficient than their IDE counterparts.
