Error code (0x80070002) when attempting back up

Q: Error code (0x80070002) when attempting back up

I am attempting to perform a back up ready to install windows 10. Each time I try I get the following message :
"The system cannot find the file specified (0x80070002)"
What is this and what do I need to do to over come this problem?
I should also say that I am creating a system image, is this necessary?
I would be grateful for some help please.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am having this problem with windows 10 with a license on motherboard, I am cautious about deleting profiles for fear of it making my operating system no longer activated. Is this a concern or will the machine automatically know what to do? now I have done
a backup before on an external Weste5rn digital drive, but I want to use this other drive, now this drive is also locked at bootup once the machine is booted I then unlock the drive. This is why I want the backup on this drive so I can keep it locked if desired
then I can use the other external hard drive for my file history drive

Could the fact that I have the drive locked be the cause of the error or is it more the profile issue, there are about 5 profiles visable under regedit

So I bought an external harddrive the other day (WD Elements, 1 terabyte) in order to back up my computer (Dell Inspiron 1545, Windows Vista).
I've had this computer for years and have never been able to back it up, so I tried the other day.
The first time I tried to back it up it took almost two days and ended up just restarting the computer. When I checked it still said I had never backed up my computer.
The second time I tried it simply quit the backup and said it "couldn't find the specified files".
I tried it again and it gave the error code 0x80070002 but that was all the information it gave.
I'm wondering if it has to do with another problem I've been having for a few years now, which is that my computer will make a series of loud beeps every time it is started, restarted, or woken up from hibernation (but it is quiet from sleep mode). I had figured it was a hardware rather than a software issue though since the computer has been through a lot and has some damage to it, and the beeps are different each time instead of simply beeping, for example, seven quick times. And then it will go to the screen that goes "repair computer, start windows in safe mode, start windows normally" etc.
Basically, I know I need to back up my computer and would like to do so as quickly as possible...so any help is greatly appreciated.
EDIT: Okay so I messed up and its Windows 7 (don't know how I did that) but now I know I'm under the wrong top... Read more

If you are worried about losing data I would suggest backing up your data to a form or removable media, like you external hdd, CDs, DVDs, or flash drives.
You can right click on the start orb and choose Open Windows Explorer, then click on the C: drive.  You can ope Documents, Pictures, or other files or folders, and click and drag these to the removable media.
Before backing up the operating system I would suggest repairing it first.  I would suggest doing a repair installation.
Instructions for a Windows 7 Repair installation.
A Windows 7 Repair Installation will require a installation disc.
If you do not have a Windows 7 installation disc you can download a free legal ISO image of Windows 7 SP1 at  Windows 7 Forums.  You will need to download the same version of Windows 7 that you have installed,  This image is hosted by the Digital River store which is an official distribution partner of Microsoft.  This is a genuine untouched image which is safe to download.
Attention:  If you do have a Windows installation disc, skip Part A and go to Part B, Step 1b.
Part A, Steps 1a - 6a
The ISO image will need to be burned to a DVD in order to create a bootable installation disc.
1a)  To burn a ISO file to a DVD please download ImgBurn and install it.
2a)  Insert a blank DVD into your CD/DVD drive tray, and then close the tray.

Hi guys,

I've been trying to backup my system data partition for a while now and am always getting the same error as result:

"The system cannot fin the file specified" Error code: 0x80070002.

I looked up online and it seems like this

Error code 0x8100002F and or error code 0x80070002 when you back up files in Windows 7

would be the fix. But when following the steps to solve "scenario 3" (which I believe to be my case), I can't install the update "KB976972", which is claimed to solve the issue. I had previously asked for help here:

Update is not applicable to your computer

and NoelDP suggested I created a new thread explaining the problem. I have a Windows7-SP1 (x64) machine with 8GB of RAM. And yes, I am trying to backup the files to an external drive using an USB connection. Also, the system anti-virus is Avira (free). That's the first and only AV installed and there were no infections up to this point, as far as I know (it's a multiple users machine).

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

A:Error 0x80070002 when attempting to backup files

had the same problem and finally discovered a solution that worked for me. I found this link
Backup fails with error code 0x80070002 / Assigning drive letter for system-reserved partition helps, but why ...?.

I following the suggestion of assigning a drive to the 'reserved system partition. Afterwards backup started to work again. I also noticed that I was getting the same 'bit-locker' error in the event log.

Being curious I googled the bit-locker error code (I also didn't use bit-locker) and came across this the same error and the fix was to run command mountvol /r, then mountvol /e. I got rid the 'drive' for 'eserved system partition. Lo and behold, backup still worked.

The bit-locker error started to occur after I updated the bios.

Hi,The reason why you are getting this error is because MalwareBytes deleted the oembios.dat file which was actually a false positive. Also read here: http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.p...amp;#entry25841So, since you are able to boot into safe mode, Open MBAM, click on the quarantine tab and select to restore the oembios.dat file.

The following error crops up when I try to install certain items (in this case Rollercoaster Tycoon 3). I had an error with Installshield on Vista with this game on a recent fresh install (though have had no issues before on Vista) and took the opportunity to upgrade.

Interestingly, I cannot install Installshield Engine Update 700 or 701 either (which the game uses) as I get the same error.

This is a clean Win 7 Ultimate X64 install.

Can anyone help? All I'm getting with google is Windows Update errors, mainly relating to XP. I've tried deleting all files in Software Distribution and stopped/restarted the update service and downloaded all updates.

My computer was made from IBM and NetVista. So it is an old one. I was thinking of formatting this pc and installing windows xp again, but found out its not worth the trouble and should get another pc. A reason why I wanted to format it was because of this error I got logging in.

Is there a way to fix this? Many thanks in advance.

Hi, capt.noobcake Lets give this a try. We will need to scan the computer throughout an External Environment, which simply means you will need to burn a boot CD with especial tools. You will also need a flash drive to move information from the troubled computer to a working computer. It is the only way we can see the progress of our actions. Save these instructions in your flash drive as a text file (use notepad) so you can have access to these while in an external environment (PE).Here is what you need to do.Download OTLPEStd.exe to your desktop. NOTE: This file is 93.1MB in size so it may take some time to download.Once downloaded, insert a blank CD in your burner and click on OTLPEStd.exe.The executable includes the OTLPE_New_Std.iso and a copy of imgburn, a program to burn .iso files. I think it happened after my computer got infected with a certain spyware from untrusted site.

Any other solutions pls? It will be greatly appreciated...

In the past most of the updates installed successfully, but some failed, and now I can no longer access the history list of updates.

I tried many things suggested by Microsoft Community support but nothing worked. For one step they suggested opening

I Googled the problem and it seems my registry may be messed up? Many people with this problem have recommended
RegCure. I ran the trial version & it found 800 errors on my system but I'm not sure if I should buy it as there may be some other problem.
If anyone has any answers please let me know.

I found this thread in http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic321834.html earlier and I see that I have almost the same problem. This is my case...

I was uninstalling some unwanted stuff from my laptop and it suddenly hanged. When I restarted my computer, I got which seemed like the BSOD blinking for a second and rebooting again. (just like the guy in the said thread)(I figured the reason for the rebooting was because of the automatic restart on system failure. When I disabled it, yeah I confirmed that it was indeed BSOD.) This keeps on repeating whenever I turn on my laptop. Also, when I run it in safe mode, when it starts listing the system files, it stops at alfaff.sys then reboots. Im guessing this is the damaged system file.

I also tried the iso image Vista recovery disk download thing cuz I also dont have the installation disc and also got the same messages for Startup Repair and System Restore: "Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically"; "System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed. Details: System Restore failed due to an unspecified error. The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002)".

Please I need help... Im using Acer Aspire 4736 and my OS is Windows Vista 32-Bit if that helps.

I also tried the OTLPEStd thing that the JSntgRvr guy recommended in the said thread and I attached the aforementioned OTL text file in this post. I hope this helps ... Read more

Can't install Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable x64 12.0.21005 on Windows 7 SP1.

Every time I try it gives me Setup failed with Error Code 0x80070002 - The system cannot find the file specified.

This is stopping me from trying the Starwars Beta.

I tried googling and everything I find is about Windows Backup or Windows Update. Honestly a dead end right now how to solve this.

Hi, I have already been working on this issue for a few days. HP Desktop running Windows 8.1 Pro, x64.

A few days ago, Netflix App stopped working. I uninstalled, then tried to reinstall from Store. Store error code 0X80070002.

Ran Windows App Troubleshooter (downloaded from Microsoft Support pages). Found 3 errors, but couldn't fix:
- Some security settings are missing or have been changed Not Fixed
- Windows Store cache may be damaged Not fixed
- Windows Store configuration may be damaged Detected
My first concern was the security settings, so I carefully checked my Update History to be sure all my security updates have been successful. I also checked to make sure all my programs/drivers were up to date using Secunia and Advanced System Care. Then I ran several scans to check for malware (MBAM, Windows Defender scan, Advanced System Care Pro). All scans were normal except one which called the HP bloatware Recipebox.exe a Trojan, so I quarantined it (I have never once used it, it came preloaded on the machine). Can a Trojan rename itself as something I've never used? Or more likely a false positive?

After everything looked clean, tried Store to install Netflix, same error, same 3 items appeared when I re-ran App Troubleshooter.

Ran Iobit Winfix tool which found no windows issues. DSKCHK found no errors. Repaired Internet Explorer (last time a Microsoft branded app was making me crazy, it was an IE issue I hadn't noticed because I use Firefox for browsi... Read more

I have been trying to update my computer to service pack 2 but it keeps failing. I get the error code in the subject, file not found.  I even tried a clean boot and shut off my anti virus and firewall. I tried cleaning up the windows update history as well. I tried the system update readiness tool as well but that just hung.  I had the computer previously cleaned in this forum, http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/476212/possible-spyware/.  I am not sure if some files were corrupted after the cleaning. I am running the 64 bit version on a HP Pavilion laptop.  I hope someone can help because I would like to have the latest version.  Thanks.

Well...that "cleaning" took place in Dec 2012...so I would not count on that as any indication about the current status of malware possibilities.
Have you tried MS Fixit ?

1. The error.log files says "Target files are not found for c:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Audio Books" error code (0x80070002). And 0x810002F in the "show detail" option on the error small window.
2. Of course they were deleted already no such files in the computer.
3. In order to eliminate such odd instruction, searched every places in c:\Windows ....\systemprofile\ and entire c: drive including all "Registry" files for the word "Audio Books". The word was not found in all the area.
4. Where such odd instruction is hidden?
5. I also want to know any method to see file details, in order to compare, latest back upped file with older back upped one with the directory "Audio Books" .

This is an urgent question as I have two days to send back the computer if it won't work.

I bought the Asus Zenbook UX21E (Windows 7 64bit on 128Go SSD) and like many others I encountered problems with the wireless card which was inconsistent. The procedure to solve this problem includes the downloading and installing of the newest version of the wireless card driver.

Problem is when trying to install the driver, I get blocked at the beginning with an error code

-5001 : 0x80070002

But no thread related to the Asus Zenbook problems mentioned this issue so I have no idea how to bypass it.

How it went:

- First I noticed the wi-fi problem.
- I connected via ethernet and updated windows. The wi-fi became even more inconsistent.
- I downladed the newest driver and tried to install it. Error code.
- I went to the windows website and applied the procedures linked to this particular error code, automatic and manual. None worked. So i though that it was maybe linked to the windows update.
- I did a factory reset of the system (via the bios and the recovery image). Same error code.

Any idea?

Thanks in advance for you answers.

that error code has to do with windows update,This problem occurs when some files in the update are missing, even though the update is downloaded and extracted successfully.

To fix this problem yourself, remove the download directory, and then visit the update locations again.Stop the Automatic Updates service. To do this, follow these steps:Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.

Start the Automatic Updates service. To do this, follow these steps:Maximize the Services snap-in.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service, and then click Start.
Close the Services snap-in window.

I would like to thank everybody in advance for their assistance. I am fairly well versed in computers, but I am unable to find any information to help me out with this problem.

I have an Acer Aspire 5100 Notebook with AMD Turion 64X2 TL-50. 1.6 GHz, 2X256KB cache. 160GB HDD. Up to 256MB ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 Hypermemory. Came with 1GB DDR2, but I have 4GB in it now, no problems related to that since I installed them. Windows Vista Home Premium sp1.

Some time ago, Windows downloaded an update for the HDD that gave me a blue screen at startup error. I did a System Restore and everything was fine, but forgot to change the Windows Update options to not install updates automatically. Same problem, but this time I can't Restore back far enough because I hadn't shut down the computer for almost a month. The Error reads :
***STOP: 0X0000007B (0X80599BB0, 0XC0000034, 0X00000000, 0X00000000)

I know this is a common error. What I'm trying to do now is be able to correct it with System Recovery, or backup all my data on my C and D drives onto my external USB hard drive and start Vista from scratch with a backup disk or possibly 'upgrade' to XP. Startup Repair cannot fix the error. Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool does not even complete before the computer powers down. All the stored System Restore points give me catastrophic errors upon completion.
What I'm trying to do now, is use the command prompt robocopy to copy files to the external. I've had some success; all my music and pic... Read more

I am trying to install Windows 7 32-bit RC on a desktop PC. I have previously used this disk successfully to install the OS on a laptop.

I keep getting an error message to the effect thatWindows cannot install required files.
Error code: 0x80070570Initially I thought that this was due to a flaky DVD drive but I have now installed a different drive and am still getting the same message. I also tried a SATA DVD drive but it seems that the Windows 7 installation process didn't like (have drivers for) this interface

edit:I have previosuly managed to load Windows 7 64-bit RC on this PC but had some problems with stability so thought I would give the 32-bit version a go.

I notice that some people have got around this problem by burning the DVD at slow speeds and by using a USB drive to boot from; since I have successfully installed using this DVD, the former doesn't seem relevant and I don't have an 8GB USB drive available. I will try running MemTest86+ on the system on the off-chance.Any explanations / other suggestions . . . please . . . ?

ps - I have just downloaded a new copy of Windows 7 32-bit RC, burned it at 1x and have got the same unhelpful error message

I'm not sure how long it has been this way because I have not noticed anything else abnormal going on but when I tried to access my firewall yesterday it said it was not set to the recommended settings. When I attempted to open it to fix this I got Error Code 0x80070424 with the message "Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings". I ran several Malware and anti-virus scans and my system now comes up clean but this is still the case. I looked on several forums for other people having the same problem and tried a few things that fixed it for them but nothing happened on my end. I saw there were a few topics started here regarding the same issue but I didn't want to start editing my registry on my own without some guidance. Thanks...

Error code 2755 when attempting installation for any product.

I am getting Error 2755 when attempting to install or during installation of Java as well as a few other products I have tested as a cross-comparison to this error.

Upon attempting installation it states "The system cannot open the device or file specified."

When you click "Cancel" it states: "The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing the package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2755."

The computer has Windows XP with SP3 and is fairly up to date, 99.9%. I need some ideas or help in fixing this. I am busy trying to search out some items but I'm hoping someone has fixed this before.

Thank You for yor input

A:Solved: Error Code 2755 when attempting installation of products...

Ok, if you want the short version... skip the links I posted for reference and just follow the steps. Its about 5 minutes or less depending on your machines stability and ability to compute your moves. I recommend you to reboot your computer in between steps and before you begin be sure to create a System RESTORE point as well.

This was written using XP, your system will vary slighty but not much. And YES, this is the broad basics.

Two things first...

Find out what version your MSI installer is and if it needs updating. NOTE: i would have guessed you would of received a different code or error if you just needed an update!?. Such as a message stating to be out of date; needs updating; is corrupted; etc.. i'm failry sure it works this way too. I was also getting an error 2755 when attempting a JAVA install. This turned out to be related to the "Windows Installer" not being set to Automatic and/or the service Started!
1.) --> Start --> Run --> type "Msiexec" (Case insensitive and without quotes))

Should this attempt not work, Microsoft lists the long run around to this as ...--> Start --> Run --> type either "command" or "cmd", and at the command prompt enter the "Msiexec". In either case read the information posted in the box, if any all you will need is the version number.

I am running Vista 64 bit with SP1. I do not know if my problem relates to the operating system or SP1 specifically but it may do.
I have recently tried to install two things on my system. The first was a digital TV tuner (USB dongle type). My system would not recognise the hardware, then it had a problem finding the drivers and when I guided it to the installation disk it eventually came up with the error code:
0x800F0247 A problem was encountered while attempting to add the driver to the store
I thought the dongle must be faulty so I returned it to the manufacturer.
I subsequently tried to install drivers for my Nokia phone and went through the same problems. However I had previously installed the drivers for this on another computer so I know it works but on my computer,  after much searching by windows and having to again direct it manually to the installation CD, I again get the message:
0x800F0247 A problem was encountered while attempting to add the driver to the store.
Does anyone have a detailed step by step guide on how to get my computer to add drivers to the driver store when installing new hardware? I ask for a step by step guide because I am a novice at this and the problem just will not go away. I really need to solve this issue.
Many thanks.

right folks.

i took my parents tower. it has a 70GB hard drive as master and a 4GB as slave [it was just thier old HD] now i took the slave out and put my troubled HD in. someone said if i do this i can run windows off the master and still access my files.

i did this but cannot access my files, my drive shows up, i can get into prog files and stuff but not my personal folder with college work, music, pics, that sort of thing.

i then came accross Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, Back Up Your Data, 'Welcome to backup or restore wizard' well i managed to makw a windows back-up file of 35gb of work, music, vids, basically my entire personal folder.

this is now sitting on the master hard drive as a windows back up file.

this is where i need help and pretty fast.

i have no idea how the back up files works. can i simply reformat my hard drive, load xp on, do the updates and such then i double click on this back up file and it unpacks my items into a desired folder? is that how it works?

if thats the case i need to re-format my pc, keep it set as the slave on here, put the back up file on here, then add xp on in my own tower.

***is this correct
***will it work
***can someone give me a simple way to completely reformat my HD and wipe absolutely everything and start again?

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop (c. 2009) that had Windows 7 Home Premium on it. A couple months ago, I did the free upgrade to Windows 10 after continually getting prompted by Windows. Big surprise, my computer is not compatible, and therefore I can't see
anything on the monitor without plugging it into the TV via a HDMI cable, the "Start" button at the bottom left corner doesn't work, etc. It would also not let me go back to Windows 7 within the 30 days period. The laptop works perfectly fine minus
Windows 10 have screwed it up.

After talking to Dell support, they said Windows 7 needed to be reinstalled via a DVD. My friend had an original, unopened Dell reinstallation DVD with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. When I try to do the reinstall, I choose "look for updates,"
and when it is in the "Setup is copying temporary files" first part of the install, the Unexpected error message with error code 0X6 telling to restart install pops up. I have tried multiple times, and I continually get the same error message.

Please help!
