I am having an issue with frequent media disconnects. Upon booting my system, browsers do not connect to the internet. A restart fixes the problem for a while and the system eventually disconnects again. I have hardwired cable and supplier provided cable modem. The system says I am connected but browsers don't function until a soft restart. My PC is for personal use and is owned by me. I have recently added Spybot AV and previously used Windows Defender. McAfee in the distant past. None of them show much and if they do and the item is fixed, I still experience the same media disconnects.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So heres the deal.
Ive recently upgraded from windows XP 32 bit to Windows 7 64bit, this ofcourse means Ive formatted my harddrives and made a clean install.
But now Ive realised, that whenever I try to download a large file which takes several minutes, my computer will disconnect from the router and I have to let windows do its thing and it says its "Resetting Network card" After this I have to reboot the PC and yet again let windows do its thing where it tells me to let it reactivate my network card. When Ive done this Ill be connected to the internet again. Ive tried to let my PC run for several hours just to make sure its not random dc's but within 5 mins of me starting a download it dc's. I can browse around just fine and have tried countless of different solutions around the web and none have helped so far. Now I beg you to give me Every single possible solution that you guys can think of. Keep in mind that I have another PC running vista connected to the router and that one works just fine, and I never had this problem on XP.
Also please keep in mind that Im not all that techie when it comes to router settings and such, so keep it simple for the sake of my brain not overheating!

Thanks in advance.

A:Internet Disconnects

Sounds like a network driver problem but I don't see any network driver downloads fro Windows 7 X86 or X64 on the ASUS site for the Gigabit network device.

As a test, remove the router from the setup and connect directly to the broadband modem. Try a download and see what happens. If it fails the same way then the router is definitely involved. If it doesn't fail then try swapping the port and cable the router is connected to with the one currently in use by the Vista computer then try the test again.

If it works then it is either the Ethernet cable or some problem with that specific port on the router. If it doesn't make any difference, then try deleting the Gigabit network device from Device Manager as follows:

Press WinKey+R to open a Run box.
Type devmgmt.msc and press Enter
Expand Network Adapters
Right click on the Gigabit device and select Uninstall
Reboot and wait while Windows 7 rediscovers the device and reloads the driver, see if that helps.

When I turn on the Internet (I have a modem), it works fine until I turn other programs on then the Internet basically turns off, but the computer says I'm still connected to the Internet. Why is this doing this and why is the Internet turning off?

If I'm downloading something off the Internet say a game demo or a game update the Internet would just turn off like I said before and then I would have to disconnect and then reconnect and try redownloading and sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn't.

I found a pattern or it's just coincidence, but when the downloading box isn't the main thing selected for a while the Internet turns off. Someone please help and don't tell me to ask my ISP he's the other word for donkey.

Hi All
I have been having internet disconnects every since I have had VISTA. It is the same that used to occur in WIN ME & 98. It happens when you spend a long time surfing on one web site. There was a fix for this problem then and I have forgotten it. It is not my server as I have another computer with WIN 98SE and it does not happen. I have to cycle my DSL modem off & on to reconnect. I am connected through a router to a second computer and to the modem and the second computer stays connected. The internet icon (lower right display) will indicate local only is connected.
Any help would be great. Forum

A:Internet Disconnects

If you're using a laptop or server, the network card may be configured to go into power saving mode releasing the IP address after a set amount of time of non-activity.

Which version of Windows Vista are you using? Vista is known to have plenty of networking issues on it's own so it may be worth searching Microsoft's KB (Knowledge Base) at www.microsoft.com if you're familiar with it.

Also your computer system mentions a Dell E-520 which appears to be a standard desktop PC, would you be able to confirm this?

Finally, if you could post the results of an "ipconfig /all" while the network is connected and then when it becomes unavailable, this would help troubleshoot the problem.

Roden

Hi I have also been experinsing these problems. I am a video game player as well and whenever I try to play on my laptop my internet disconnects. But all my other devices that use wifi work fine. Also there is nothing wrong with my computer because it works fine on other networks such as my schools. I recently moved and am now using a different internet provider ,centerylink. I think I have to change my modem channel but centurylinks website were you change modem settings is a scam. The website does not work and my parents think theres something wrong with my computer and are refusing to change internet service providers. So I am wondering how If I can change modem channels a different way.

Hi, You might have another wifi signal very close to your house that is on 'your' channel, it happens.
You can only move your channel to one of three different frequencies, that is the lowest, the middle or the highest one. So say your current channel is 6, there is no point going to 7, it's still too close.
If the 'other' problem wifi channel near you is say '1' then you should try to go to the other end of the range.
You change your WiFi channel in your router, then your laptop will find it.
You don't need a website to do that, it's between your laptop and your router.
You make the changes through any web browser, and the details will probably be on the label of your router.
But this might not the problem, although it's a fairly easy one to 'fix' if it is.

Welcome to TSF.

We will take a look at your system for malware, but it's unlikely the cause of loss of connection. If we can't locate a problem, you will be encouraged to ask for advice in the Networking forum, here at TSF.

Download HiJackThis - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HiJackThis.exe there. Double click on the program to run it.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose [Do a system scan and save a logfile].
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit [Scan] and then click on [Save log].
3. Post the HiJackThis.log file here. Do not fix anything in HiJackThis since they may be harmless.

A:internet disconnects

Hi,

First welcome to TSF!!!

Next I would try a couple of things. Start off with a power cycle of your equipment, and see if that helps. Next you would need to narrow it down to what is causing the problem. Does it only happen when you are using chrome or does it happen with other browsers, more to the point does it happen with other programs that use the internet like email, instant messaging, etc. Are you running any programs that allow you to torrent, that can cause issues with your connection.

Cheers!

As soon as I connect my VPN it disconnects the internet. I'm using a desktop with windows 7, connected to wifi via a Netgear 4600 router. I have two internet connections, one of which is not connected to the router, both connections are affected. Used to work fine and I don't think I have done anything that would cause this. Any suggestions?

Hi theriffs1

I have Verizon DSL also, I was receiving the Pop up ballon: An network cable has been unplugged about every hour.

I would need to physically reseat the ethernet cable, (are you using an ethernet connection or a USB connection?), finally I purchased a new ethernet cable and that problem went away.

I did call Verizon, they have a free upgrade from 1.5mb/368kbps to 3.0mb/768kbps, it was offered to me without my asking.

Have you tried an ipconfig/release, ipconfig/renew from a command window?

Start > Run
key in:
cmd /k ipconfig
Click: Enter
The information appearing will show you what your IP address is, and how long before it expires.
My IP address renews itself every 15 minutes.

At a command prompt in the same command window key in:
ipconfig/release
Enter
Then key in:
ipconfig/renew
Enter
Your IP address should be renewed.

Have you had any viruses that may have corrupted your Winsock?

Let us know if this makes a difference or not, and if you don't have the upgrade yet, call Verizon and get it!

hi Boltonsquad I have a similar sounding problem.
My connection to the network is reported as excellent but randomly the actual download speed drops away to nothing.
Does yours "mend " itself after a short while and start working again...or is yours off for good. I find rebooting the laptop resolves it faster than waiting for it to do it itself...until it does it again(not good).
I use a belkin router (number can be supplied when I get home if needed) ..maybe thats the common?

It just disconnects and reconnects in a split second. This interferes while I'm playing games (3 different games), it'll tell me I have lost connection, and when I check my internet connection it says I'm connected. Sometimes I see the little internet connection icon on the bottom say X then a little loading circle then back online in a second. It interferes when I'm streaming also. It happens every 10-30 min or so and it gets REALLY annoying. Anybody have similar problems? Any way to fix?

I just built a new computer recently and it is running great with one big exception, I keep getting randomly disconnected from my wireless internet connection. I do not believe it has anything to do with signal strength because my laptop right next to my rig never has this issue of connectivity. Also seeing as it is a new comp it is not an issue of any malware ect. If i had to guess i would say the wireless card i got is the issue. It was a last minute purchase and cost about 20 dollars. My question is how do I uncover if the wireless card is the culprit and if it is what steps do i take to fix/replace it?

IE has an option under Tools/Internet Options/Connections and then usually properties for your dialup where you can specify a time to disconnect (i.e. - if idle more than X minutes). Have you checked this?

If not - it may be something in your ISP setup (like aol, etc.)

Hi, I'm having a problem with the internet. I'm running windows xp and I am connected to a NETGEAR router, but that doesn't matter much, because I tried connected right from my modem to my computer, bypassing my router, and it still disconnects, so it's not the router. Every hour my connection to the internet just shuts off and comes back on almost instantly, maybe 5 seconds. So lets say I get on my computer at 11:27 AM it will cut off at 12:27 PM, 1:27 PM, 2:27 PM, etc. But, if I come on my computer at 11:55 AM, then it will cut off at 12:55 PM, etc.

It comes back on right after. This isn't a problem when it comes to browsing the web and whatnot. It affects my gaming, streaming, and downloading greatly though. When I'm in an online game, I always disconnect at the hour.

Can anyone help me fix this problem? Or explain to me what the problem actually is?

I have tried going into my NIC and un-checking all the options in the power managment tab, still doesn't work. My lease expires 1 day from when it got it, not every hour.

Please help. Thanks.

So this problem started a while ago, at least half a year ago when i changed internet service provider.
every once in while my internet slowed down so much that the connection on my browser timed out and some other softwares like skype would not work. When i looked in my network center it showed that my computer is connected to my LAN but not to the internet. Another weird thing was that while my internet was down i could still be in skype calls or even send texts sometimes but my browser or games that require internet connection wouldnt work, and while i could stay in skype calls i started before i couldnt start new ones or call anyone. And lastly, the problem seemed to only be happening to my pc, not my brother's who is connected to the same LAN as i am, and whenever i disconnected his cable from the router i seemed to not be getting the problem anymore. After a little time varying from 15 seconds to 5 minutes or more my internet would come back and work as well as always.
In the beginning my internet worked most of the time and rarely this problem would show up, but as time went on it happened more and more until my internet almost never worked properly and i had to call my ISP and some tech guy that i know. Eventually i used the windows internet fix thing, not expecting it to work since it never does, but miraculously it found a service that should be working in my computer but wasnt and once i turned it on the problem seems to be fixed.

I had windows Vista then upgraded to windows 7 and it did it on both operating systems. When i do loose my internet i dont think i loose it on the router as all the light are on as normal. Im connected through a ethernat cable and changed that to see if that was the problem and its not im wondering if its the router or my computer.

Now, I've searched high and low for a solution to this problem and seem to have found one that works for now but I just want to be on the safe side:

My internet is connected through a wireless router.
It's been working fine until recently.

The problem is that for some reason ONLY THE INTERNET stops working. I'm still connected to the wireless network with perfectly fine signal strength. This happens off and on every 5-10minutes and makes doing anything on the internet a nightmare. To solve the problem, I quickly restart my wireless modem but obviously there had to be a better solution.

I've read countless posts about the same problem but it's never been answered to satisfaction, however one post had the problem "fixed" when the user re enabled his LAN card. Surprisingly this seems to have worked for me. But I'm not too sure why, or if somehow, by luck I've managed to remain connected for a long time.

Please explain?

A:Internet frequently disconnects itself

DHCP (Dynamic Host Control Protocol) needs to be enabled in internet properties. Verify that it is.

Also, make sure that the DHCP Service is started and set to "automatic" in Administrative Tools>Services.

Hi,

New to the forums. I have been using skype for months with no problem. I am in the same location, using a shared linksus modem and with no changes to my computer. Running windows 7. For the last 10 days or so, whenever my skype phone rings, i get automatically disconnected from the internet? I've seen a few others with this problem, but no solutions? Once the call drops, my internet reconnects itself. Otherwise, I have no problem connecting and staying connecting...its just when I try to use Skype...

Very confused why this is happening now and not before? Annoyed Any help please?

I am downloading an older version of Skype... will see if this helps...

Hello!Several days ago I started experiencing these weird, frequent disconnects. They last for 15 seconds up to a minute and they seem to be occurring randomly, perhaps 2-3 times per hour. I first put the blame on the router, but even after connecting my computer directly to the modem the problems persisted. Next my suspicions were aimed at my ISP, but there seemed to be no faults or maintenance work being done over there, so I connected another of my computers to the modem instead and to my surprise everything was working and the disconnects had disappeared. After ~3 hours I connected internet to my usual computer instead, and internet started disconnecting again. So obviously my computer is the culprit, but I've scanned it with many anti-virus programs and nothing turns up. I'm at a loss here - can someone help me out? Thanks in advance.link to hijackthis log, in case it might help: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/164522/strange-disconnectsrelated-to-another-topic/

Please refrain from asking for help from other members or staff until the HJT Team has checked your posted log. The HJT Team work very hard to investigate a unique solution to your problem and you will receive individual expert assistance. This takes time and effort so we ask you to please be patient while waiting for assistance and NOT to make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a HJT Team member. Any modifications you make on your own can result in system changes which may not show it the log you already posted. Further, following advice outside of that post may cause confusion for the team member assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer. The HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean. If you followed any other advice already, please ensure you inform the HJT Team Helper when they respond to assist you with your log. This will help them know what has been done and they probably will ask for an updated log.If after 5 days you still have received no response, then post a link to your HJT log in the thread titled "Haven't Had A Reply In Five Days?".To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic until you are cleared by the HJT Team. Hi,
I have a comcast high speed internet connection. I use a Motorola SB5120 connected to a Netgear WGT624 which feeds to a linksys VOIP router RTP300. I have a Dell PC (XP) connected (wired) to the netgear router and two laptops (one is a Windows 7 beta and other runs a Vista Ultimate) connecting via the wireless router. I never used to have any issues with my internet connection (wired ,wireless) until very recently.

Now, when I start my desktop, the internet works fine for a few minutes (random, usually < 5 mins) and then doesn't connect anymore after. But if I connect my laptop from the same netgear router using a wired connection, everything looks perfect there. I can see that there is something wrong happening with my desktop PC.

The wierd thing about this is that, if I connect to the internet immediately to some heavy duty bandwidth (remote connecting to my office PC) from my desktop, the internet connection remains, but I just cannot connect to any other site. It feels like there is some contention for the available bandwidth. I tried reinstalling the network drivers on my desktop, but did not help.

Any help is very valuable, since this is very frustating.

Many thanks.

My internet stops working constantly, sometimes after 5 minutes of use, or sometimes after hours and hours of use. I am using a cable modem (Toshiba Cable Modem PCX2200) and a wireless router (Trendnet 54Mbps 11g Wireless Router TEW-432BRP). When the internet goes out, the data light on the modem goes completely off and doesn't flash at all.

However, all laptops connected to the network DO stay connected to the network - the internet just doesn't work....does this mean the problem is in the modem and not the router?

I've called my cable provider and they said there's nothing wrong with the connection. I've tried restarting my modem and reinstalling all the software...nothing seems to work. Please help!

Hello, the last few weeks my internet is disonnecting every 30 minutes or so.

The things I've tried so far are:
- Up- and downgrade wifi drivers
- Reset my router
- Change the channel on my router
- Change the wpa lease time on my router and disable it
- Turn of the firewall of my router

This problem only happens to my laptop. I can have my mothers laptop next to me and while mine is disconnected hers will still work. My laptop doesn't get hot either and it is running on maximum performance settings.

Also:
Pinging to the router gives a time out (4 packets send, 0 recieved).
Pinging to localhost -n 20 gives 20 packets send, 20 recieved.

Now I'm clueless as this proves I loose connection with my router, however the 2nd ping test tells me my wireless card is ok. So I honestly have no idea what else to try and how to solve this issue.

I'd greatly appreciate your help, thanks.

I have a Netgear Nighthawk. I noticed when someone is downloading something the random disconnects happen every 2-3 minutes. When there is no downloading occuring the interenet will cut out ever 35-45 minutes. Each disconnect will last anywhere from 5-10 seconds. So its obviously not a problem with the cables.. maybe someone with too much traffic going into the router which is causing it to give up on itself? Also when the discconnects happen it isnt only on my end. It happens to everyone using the internet.

A:Internet Disconnects repeatedly

That does sound like a router issue
Turn off the route/modem for 15mins

switch back on and see if the problem still occurs

if it does you could try resetting the router - should be a reset option on the back of the box

do you have an exact model of which Netgear Nighthawk you have

Whats the problem? How do i fix this?

A:Skype disconnects the internet

Skype is P2P, many ISP's block P2P automatically, could also be the additional Skype P2P traffic filling you bandwidth. Suggest you check with your ISP

Hi Desu,Sorry for the delay, this forum is quite busy right now.I don't see any signs of malware in this log. It is clean. This forum is dedicated to the diagnosis and removal of infections. Since you seem to be connected to the internet through a wireless router, I recommend that you post your problem on The Bleeping Computer Network Forum. Do not post another HijackThis log there, but please mention that your log has been checked and no malware was found.I do have a couple of recommendations for you. All are summed up in this article by Miekiemoes:http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiem...prevention.htmlPay special attention to what she has to say about peer to peer downloading. I see you have Bittorrent installed. Also review your Antispyware and firewall programs (if any) in light of her recommendations. Your Kaspersky Antivirus is fine.Cheers,Dave

I am a new user an can't seem to find a similar question previously posted. Sorry if this is a duplicate.

1. I recently upgraded hardware and software: new hard drive, DVD/CD burner; XP Pro (clean install).
2. I have a unique ISP -- Communicom Dial Return, i.e. download via cable, upload via dial-up modem. Cable is always on, the actual connection requires the dial-up.

Problem: Internet disconnects at 20 min. no matter if the brouser is in constant use, i.e. downloading updates, etc., email being sent, whatever. Modem log at Diagnostics Tab notes "Hardware hang-up due to lowering DTR" I'm not smart enough to understand what that means.
If I make any change whatsoever to the Internet connection options, my computer will not connect ('unable to establish connection' displayed in dial-up thread.) Can't return to original settings and reconnect...must delete the connection on Internet Tools and reinstall via the Connection Wizard.
There must be a setting somewhere that makes my modem (US Robotics 56K Voice PCI) and XP Pro and Communicomm compatiable and allows me to make normal, typical settings and control how the internet connection performs.

Any thoughts
thx -- rah

I've got AT&T DSL, which is on all the time. Nevertheless, after turning on the computer for the day, if I don't actively use the Internet for a while (about a half hour), I lose my connection. In order to reconnect I've had to restart the computer. What program fluke may be causing the computer to disconnect like this? What can I do to ensure that I stay connected? AT&T says it's not caused by them, and I've verified this to be true. I've contacted Compaq, but the guy in India has no solution. I've run Norton virus scan, Spybot, and Spysweeper, all of which indicate that I'm not infected with any malware. My operating system is: XP updated with Service Pack 2 and all subsequent critical updates.

Welcome to Seven Forums,

Is this a wired or wireless issue? Have you tried both connection?

We can start off with something simple for now - Disable the Network Adapter's Power Management from Device Manager might help, please see attached file. If this didn't help at all please let us know and we'll move on to the next tasks.

Heres my problem, it has persisted for the past 3-4 months or so.

Randomly, but more frequently when i am gaming (WoW, Counter strike, Ventrilo, Warcraft III), my cable completely disconnects my internet and telephone (Optimum online & Voice)

The modem itself stays on but the lights for DS, US, and Online go out for 30 secs to a minute then reconnects and my internet is fine for the next 30 minutes or so until the same thing happens again.

I have switched out modems since it happened, no change.
I have switched out routers (upgraded from a WRT54GS to a WRT310N), no change.

I have seen you guys do some remarkable stuff with Hijackthis and such, if you could help me now with this problem it would relieve a lot of grief.

Thanks for your time
