Can't get to login screen on my T440p

Q: Can't get to login screen on my T440p

When I power on my T440p it gives me the black screen with THINKPAD in large letters, then goes straight to some Windows Start-Up Repair screen. After a while I get an error saying "Windows cannot repair this computer automatically" and I select the "View advanced options for system recovery and repair". I select "System recovery options" however this is an old computer from my work that still has Windows 7 Enterprise and I do not know the Admin password (I have tried all the typical default passwords to no avail). I was able to reach a Lenovo Diagnostics page and ran a Storage Test(?), see attached screenshot with failures and result code. SEAGATE ST500LM021-1KJ152 Smart short self-test: FAILEDDrive self-test: FAILEDTargeted read test: FAILED Resulit code: UHD016016-UM7WWJ Can someone please help me? Does this mean that I need a new hard drive? Do I have ANY options for getting into this computer in its current state? I am at a loss for what to do next.

Preferred Solution: Can't get to login screen on my T440p

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello friends, I recently got the Gnome desktop environment on the Ubuntu Software Center, and I used the gdm and startx command as said by another forum site. Nothing wrong, they said to logout, tried to login again, goes to a black screen and sends me back to the Ubuntu login screen. Tried again, same result, panicked. Looked up video tutorial on how to fix it, they said to access the control panel via ctrl-alt-f1 or f2, went to a black screen, no text at all, computer runs fine, no crashing. Is there a special way to access the terminal in a System76 computer, I really don't know very confusing? Is there a way to login with the guest session? I use Ubuntu 15.10 Wily Werewolf on my laptop. What causes this, I read on Ubuntu forums it's driver issues with Ubuntu and Nvidia, but I have my suspections with the Gnome desktop environment.

I have a T440P that has developed a flickering screen, happens at random times, from logging in to watching a movie. I Have reinstalled windoze and all updated drivers etc but the problem persists. I have also connected the lappy to the TV via the VGA and there is no flickering on my TV display, only the laptop so I assume either the screen is faulty or the rubbon connector is faulty.  I still have 140 odd days left on the warranty, will Lenovo cover the cost of the screen replacement and labour or is it time to look for a new laptop as here in South Africa screen replacements are pretty pricey...Thanks,

HI, i have bought a t440p from a well known uk 2nd hand goods supplier and may have been bitten by the thinkpad bug ! i was wondering if i can upgrade the screen to an 1080 ips screen.  Have looked on ebay and there seems to be a number of options. Screen i have at the moment has this model number on the back : N140 BGE -E33 rev C1current screen resolution is 1366x768.version/type under batt. cover is : 20AWSOKKOO couple of questions : 1) i have measured the total width of the screen and it comes up to 320mm, this seems to rule out the N140HCE-EN1 which is 315mm. 2)would this screen work:https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Replacement-AUO-B140HAN01-1-B140HAN01-3-eDP-Laptop-Screen-14-LED-LCD-FHD/...have read that some t440p thinkpads need a new fhd edp cable, is that true? 3)would the built in graphics, intel 4600, be capable of running at 1920 x 1080. thanks

Recently i replaced the mobo in my T440p machine. Because i wasnt sure it was working i checked it right after i connected to screen.I got a a picture however i didnt let it resume much more just the ThinkPad logo. I reassembled it totally while checking after each connected cable whether it was still working. It was. Right after finish i wanted to switch it on but i got some beeps (dont remember the pattern) then no screen at all, just the power button is blinking showing the AC power connection. Nothing happens with just battery  or battery + AC power.I disassembled it and reconnected what i could but didnt help.Since then there isnt any beeping at AC adapter connection just the power button is blinking 3 times then repeat. So the situation is that i have now a disassembled laptop again because i try to find out some solution. Anybody any idea? Is that possible that it switches on just in case of being fully assembled?

Hello, i've ordered an AUO B140HAN01.2 screen panel for my Lenovo T440p laptop because i wasn?t satisfied with the default LG 140WF1 screen panel . after examination of the model i have purchased, what i actually got from the seller was AUO133D. furthermore, i can't see any difference between the previous screen and the latter. Now i?m considering to send back the AUO133D.  I would appreciate if you could kindly answer two questions for me, or direct me what to do next. What is the quality level of the AUO 133D in comparison to the AUO B140HAN01.2 and compared to the LG140WF1?After installing the 133D and checking the Monitor name it was written as: Generic PnP Monitor. is there any chance that i didn?t install the screen/drivers properly and might have lowered the quality of the outcome?  Thank you!Adam

A:Lenovo T440P screen panel replacement

I can't speak to AUO133D nor LG140WF1, but I upgraded from my HD+ LCD FRU 04X0592 to the AUO B140HAN01.2 and am very happy with the new screen. I purchased it from ebay from a chinese seller who specifically listed it as AUO B140HAN01.2. My Device Manager also shows Generic PnP Monitor. I paid a little more but had a better assurance on what I was getting. In your case, you're going from an LG FHD panel to an AUO FHD panel. I don't know how  much of a difference it would be. I would return what you received.

I have been using Lenovo T and W series for years, but this is my first post, so if I am not following the etiquette correctly, please let me know. I just bought a used lenovo T440p (i7-4900MQ with Nvidia graphics, screen 1920x1080 IPS). The operating system is Windows 8.1. On white background I see a vertical line about 5 inches from the right of the screen. This line comes and goes but it is most often there. I have tried to view youtube videos full screen to use the Nvidia adapter to see if it is the screen or the video board (the line is always there). I have also connected an external monitor to the laptop and don't see the vertical line. I am wondering if this is a driver issue, operating system issue, or the screen is faulty. The laptop is still under waranty so I wanted to see what would be the best approach to taking action. Thanks for any suggestions.

I have T440p with Win10 PRO 1903 OS build 18362.295. The T440p is pretty much rock solid except for occasional sleep issue, very annoying when it occurs. I rarely turn off (shutdown) the computer but choose to use sleep. Fn+4 puts it to sleep, usually instantly. Most of the time this goes to sleep fine (and wakes up too when I want to). Sometimes though the screen will go black but the thinkpad doesn't actually go to sleep - I can hear the fan and power led and the red i in the Thinkpad logo doesn't blink red slowly. When this occurs I can't get the display to come back to life. Not even hooking up an external display. I tried all sorts of things. I've even let it sit for hours, still a black screen and no sleep. All I can do is hold the power button down for 4 seconds to do a hard power off, which I avoid at all cost. What I've noticed is it more often happens when I'm connected to Cisco VPN. So I get in the habit of disconnecting VPN before putting it to sleep. No USB devices attached either and no network drives connected either. Nor is it part of a Windows domain (not an enterprise device). Looking for ways to fix this. Hopefully someone has the magic answer.

Hi! I bought the refurbished T440p (Machine Type Model: 20AWS08M09). For my serial number at Lenovo warranty lookup site I see specification as follows: i5-4300M(2.6GHz), 8GB RAM, 240GB Solid State Drive, 14in 1366x768 LCD, Intel HD Graphics, DVD Recordable, Wireless option, WWAN option, Bluetooth, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure Chip, Camera, 6c Li-Ion, Win7 Pro 64. It seems strange to me that, in fact, my laptop has a screen with a resolution 1600x900, but not 1366x768!!! Of course, I suspected that the screen could be replaced. However, outwardly it looks completely untouched and the lateral plastic frames fit very tightly to the screen (like on new laptop). Could such a screen be installed in the factory? How can I make sure that the screen is original?

A:T440p: matching screen model and serial number

Welcome to the CommunityAccording to MTM the screen should be HD+.So, it's a factory part.

Hello, My Thinkpad t440p turns off and on when power changes. If power is disconnected, the screen goes black like sleeping then comes back on after a few seconds. It does that as well when the power is connected. I tried the whole advanced display settings thing that I found here. It didn't work. The change is uncomfortable, especially given that I may not be prepared for the change (power situation and all). Please help!

A:T440p sleeps and wakes on power change - connected and disconnected. Screen turns off then on

Hello and welcome,

Your laptop actually sleeps?  It's not just the screen blanking?

And please explain what you mean by "the whole advanced display settings thing".  It's impossible to know what you've already tried from that description.  Do you mean you've set the AC and battery screen refresh rates to be the same?  That is what usually fixes what you describe - if it's just screen blanking.

Ok, here's the background. My wife's pc (identical to my own, and running on Windows XP)was restarting at shutdown recently on it's own and I saw an error that said there was some kind of driver error. So, I uninstalled the nvidia drivers in hopes of installing the most recent ones. I don't know if this was the issue, but I was troubleshooting and I noticed that there was a recent driver update.

Well now I can't log on at all, because when I get to the windows login screen, the mouse and keyboard won't work. I see for an instance the cursor shows an hourglass, then nothing. I see the blinking cursor in the login field, but I can't type anything in there, and the mouse doesn't work.

So, I tried to do a system restore but it just sent me to the login screen, and no mouse or keyboard function persisted. When I tried to go into safe mode, it asked me what was the boot device I wanted to use (which after some searching I see is also an indicator of a problem, but I'm not sure what it means). I picked my HD and continued to do a restore to the last working config, and the same deal, can't login, no mouse or keyboard use at that sceen.

So, I tried going into safe and it shows both an administrator icon and my wife's user name, and I can't try either because again, the moust and keyboard aren't working here either!

I tried to boot with the windows xp disc in, even picked the boot source from the boot menu as floppy and again as the cd-rom. I read that doing so can sometim... Read more

Hi, I just discovered a problem with vista. I recently installed an outstanding software known as TuneUp Utilities 2009, I then used it to customize my computer login screen, I made a modification such that on startup or when no one is logged (i.e. when the login screen is displayed), in case there has been no activity for 10 minutes, vista's built in bubble screensaver begins to run. Unfortunately, when I tested this modification out, I noticed a screensaver error stating that "direct3d 9.0 is required to run this screensaver and can't be found on your computer", so I logged in and tried running the screensaver again and it worked perfectly.
Why is it not working on the login screen but it works on the desktop screen? How do I confirm the version of direct x I have installed, because I recently made an update on my direct x, I tried updating it to 10.XXX and the same problem is still occurring. Please reply asap.

A:login error, screensaver can't run on login screen, Direct X 9.0 not recognized

I have a vexing problem since the Anniversary update on my Vaio. I have been using Windows 10 on this machine successfully for over a year. Here are the exact symptoms:

I boot up the laptop from a cold state. The boot appears normal and my personal background appears on the welcome screen with the current time and date. Normally, I would just need to click anywhere on this screen to receive my personal photo and a login prompt. Up to this point, by the way, I have not heard the Windows dah-dah-di-dah-hmmmm sound. When I click on the welcome screen, the background stays, but seems to zoom in slightly. No personal picture appears, no login prompt appears. The only icons are the WiFi icon and the accommodations icon for visually impaired. Both of these icons function normally, but nothing else does, not ctrl-alt-delete. Not the enter key. Nothing.Eventually, after about a minute, the welcome screen with the date and time returns, but clicking produces the same result as before.I am forced to hold down the power key until the computer shuts down and then press it again to boot.At this point, the process usually proceeds normally (with the dah-dah-di-dah-hmmmm sound) and the login screen with my (circular) photo appears and the login proceeds normally.Other strangeness: I am unable to verify my identity on the computer because clicking on Verify produces a Windows security error: We couldn't sign you in."I tried resetting the Windows explorer advanced internet options, and it ... Hi, I'm new here. I created this account for help because my mother's password seems changed and she couldn't login, the keyboard wasn't sticky so she didn't mistype, caps lock wasn't on. I typed it my self and it didn't work, restarted the computer and it didn't work neither. I then go to thinking it was hacked and the password was simply changed. I gave up hope on it, so I found this youtube video to reset it the manual labor way-here's the link to it: " https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLtJ-iDdWC0 " So, continuing on..

Hello nice people !

Windows is asking me for a password despite I've never had a password.

Here's what happened:

I've never had a password and choose during the win install to have 1 local account without password.

I used to have a user/login name with an non ascii character (?), and it was causing me some trouble. Hence I decided to change it with ascii only characters. Control Panel, users etc ... properties, changed the name of the local user.

Reboot, and boom, Windows asks me for a password and is displaying the former user name !! But there's no option to change the user name, I've read that there should be a back arrow but it's not here (probably because windows "thinks" there's no point since there is only 1 user).

I don't know what to do, I used a Linux live usb distro to use some tools that can reset password and unlock account, however:

1/ it can only reset password, which seems not to be the issue here, the issue is the wrong user name
2/ the linux tool shows 1 local user with the last update name

So I'm guessing windows is not using the proper name to login, but doesn't provide any mean to change it.

If anyone has an idea, that would be greatly approciated.

Hello Bob, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Double check in Netplwiz to do step 4 to set Windows to automatically sign in to your user account at startup. If you had this set before, then it may not have been updated after you removed your password, and needs to be setup again.

Log On User Account Automatically at Windows 8 Startup

Hope this helps,
Shawn

hi guys,

i've got a very strange problem with the kids laptop which i'm desperate to sort out as my kid has her exams coming up and needs access to her apps.

Windows loads okay, upto the point when i get to the welcome screen.

Sometimes it gets to the welcome screen, but the user profile icons will never show but then sometimes the icons will show, but when i click on the icon, i can't get to the bit where i can type a password.

If i reboot into safemode, then i can perfectly access everything as normal.

Any ideas guys?

Thanks!

After I configured to start up the Windows 10 with the safe mode as following method for uninstalling a software, it does not prompt to enter a password at login screen anymore.

It was working fine until now.

I have tried following but no luck.
Pressed Windows icon + r to launch a run command - No responsePressed the space, enter, and any other buttons to launch a password prompt - No response. *It seemed to accept a keyboard entry. i.e. Caps lock worksTried to start up the Windows 10 using F8 safe mode (I know it does not work for Windows 10 but I tried anyway)Switched the Microsoft account by selecting lower left corner account options - It did switched the account but no password prompt.

As I can not login to the Windows, I am using my second PC to create the post. Please help.

A:No password prompt at login screen. Can not login.

Have you reset System Configuration to normal boot (remove the check from safe mode)?

Try pressing the Ctrl key and just type your password blind - there was a bug in the Preview builds, but I haven't seen it since then.

I'm using Windows 7 Pro. I have remove the login pw in my user account now I do not need to do the login and able to use the computer right away. But I found I am using the computer as a user not administrator. How can I skip the login screen and go straight into desktop as administrator. How can I do that? thanks

A:Windows 7 Pro login as admin but no need to have login screen

Hello Smash, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I'm a bit confused with your conflicting statements.

You say that "...now I do not need to do the login and able to use the computer right away.", but then ask "How can I skip the login screen and go straight into desktop..."?

Just to be certain, do you have to log on or not?Log On Automatically at Startup
Are you asking how to log on to the built-in Administrator account to have full access and control?

Hope this may help for now,
Shawn

Welcome CJGCJG to the windows 7 forums.

Remote Desktop Program is as it says a program on your computer that will allow you full screen remote to another system that authorizes you. There is a way to automatically bring the RDP program up for you to log into another system but it requires that your primary windows system (the one your want to connect from) be set up to automatically boot into you Operating system, putting the RDP program in your startup fold will bring it up.
Using netplwiz, you can set your userid to automatically log in to your local machine and then the RDP would run and you can then log onto your remote system. In fact y ou can save all the credentials for your RDP session and it will automatically login to your remote system.

Is this clear?

Ok this morning I started up my computer and at the login screen the only option I had available to use to login was (Other User)? I normally have (my login) and (guest login). I'm using WIN7 64BIT it's a custom built computer I put together in 2011. I'm using three HD, OS 256GB SSD, FLTSIM 256 SSD, Storage 1TB. I last used the computer last night around 7:30pm and I had no issues. I've restarted three times but to no avial. Is there a fix for this??

A:WIN7 login screen just has (Other User) available and I can't login?

Hello bankheadd, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You might see if you may be able to do a system restore at boot using a restore point dated before you had this issue to hopefully undo and fix it.

I have a problem with an old aspire 5920. I've upgraded it correctly to the latest build of Win10 32bit. I was already on a clean Win10 installation. Now I cannot logon anymore because the logon screen is just empty. If I press enter the clock/screensaver disappear but the user name doesn't come out. To enter safe mode I have to force shut down the laptop 3 times then win10 start its "repair useless thing" and I can decide to enter safe mode. In safe mode the login works correctly. I noticed I cannot add other users. Safe mode limitation? If I click on add another user it just flash a new window and that's all. I cannot enter safe mode from the locked logon page with Shift + Reboot it just reboot normally so I have to force it to turn off. The problem started from 1 day to another. Not soon after the uograde but some days later. I didn'install any AV or any new drivers (at least that I know of). I'm doubting that some auto update did the problem. I've already tried to boot it with wifi off even removing the wifi card from the laptop... Is there a way to solve this without repair win10 installation and losing programs....?
Sorry for my english...

After 3 days of installing windows 7 Ultimate and all the softwares/games, I made a mistake by changing user group and removing administrative privileges from user Miky. Right now I have the following user accounts:
Administrator -> Account disabled
LogMeInRemoteUser -> Administrator group with known password.
Miky -> Users group

How to login as LogMeInRemoteUser when it is not shown on login screen?
Can I switch user using command prompt?

Thanks in advance!

A:How to Login As Administrator (not shown in login screen)

Try this from an Elevated Command prompt:

net use Administrator /active:yes

Logoff and you should now see Administrator as one one the users. Login and open User Accounts and fix the Miky account.

For the past 3 days I haven't been able to log in to my 7 year old compaq laptop after trying to restore/recover my iTunes which completely lost all its contents last Sunday. Recovery failed but windows did an update (which it hasn't done for ages). I have never experienced problems with this laptop. The keys and mousr are unresponsive on the windows login page but fine otherwise (I tried some tune up & problem solving using the F function keys). I really don't want to restore to factory settings box fresh that would be disastrous! Please help me

My computer kept freezing. I wanted to know if it was a program causing it.

I went to run --> msconfig and disable all the start up programs.
I thought wiindows would be smart enough to disable only the unessential programs.
When windows restarts its start like normal, but there is not screen to login.

As can be seen in the picture, sometimes after locking the computer, unlocking is impossible because there is no where to enter the password and the screen is almost empty but the options on the bottom left.
Any way to fix that?
