Windows 10 Version 1803 Windows Explorer crash loop

Q: Windows 10 Version 1803 Windows Explorer crash loop

Windows 10 Home (x64) Version 1803 (build 17134.320)

I'm getting all kinds of crash loops in Windows Explorer from doing the simplest of task like for example installing Sims City from a ROM or just copying files from a USB drive to SD card. I did disable Cortana using the registry edit method and I've heard this could be the problem.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Received Error code 6 when calling ::DeviceIoControl with command CTL_CODE(FILE_DEVICE_UNKNOWN, IOCTL_USB_INDEX(0x0000) + 4, METHOD_BUFFERED, FILE_ANY_ACCESS) on windows 10.

Getting error on windows 10 version 1809 but same code was/is working on windows 10 version 1803.
Is there any change in windows 10 patches? I am communicating with hardware on USB port

Hi I would be really grateful for any assistance or advice.

When ever I turn on my computer (even in safe mode) I get a constant loop of warning messages telling me that "windows explorer is not working" and "windows explorer is restarting". I have free AVG antivirus which says it needs to be updated but the connection always fails when I try. I also have Zone Alarm which has told me that my computer is connected to another computer or network and asked what security setting I would like to put on it.

Do I have a virus? how would I find out which one?

A:windows explorer crash loop

hi welcome to the forums so while in safe mode can you do any tasks? i would remove any security software you have and install Microsoft security essentials http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/ if you can run this (not in safe mode)

Perform a SFC Scan

1. Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow

2. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:

sfc /scannow

A message will appear stating that 'The system scan will begin'. Be patient because the scan may take some time

3. If any files require a replace SFC will replace them. You may be asked to insert your Windows 7 DVD for this process to continue

4. If everything is okay you should, after the scan, see the following message "Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations"

5. After the scan has completed, close the command prompt window, restart the computer and check.

Earlier today I attempted to remove SP3, and since then I havent been able to get back into my PC. Once I enter my password and log in the desktop takes a good five minutes to load, at which point I get a crash report "Windows Explorer has encountered a serious error etc.". As the computer is not connected to the internet I can't send an error report, so whichever of the two options I choose I get the same message, but for that DrMortem program. When I click one of the options on this the warning stays on-screen but I cannot do anything to it (like it's part of my background or something). I go into Task Manager and crash the process for either DrM or Explorer, and the loop starts over again. I have tried booting in Safe Mode as well as the "Last Good Configuration" option but to no avail. The only option I can think of is to reinstall Windows, but I am hoping that someone has a better option as there are some files on there I want to keep - they aren't life or death, and so reinstalling IS an option, just not a favorable one.

Here's hoping someone can help me with this, and sort of soon.

I'm trying to fix a problem on a Win10 64bit Home machine which, I think, happened after a recent update. When booting into normal mode the user experiences a desktop which flashes on and off at about one second intervals.

I've discovered that this is because Windows Explorer is continually crashing and restarting but I can't find any reason why.

I am able to start Task Manager (ctl/alt/del) and that works OK and I am able to run commands from there, provided I enter one character at a time as explorer flashes on and off.

I can get in and use safe mode OK and have checked many things, none of which have resolved the issues:-

sfc /scannow,

winlogon shell value in registry,

shell extensions,

malware & AV scans.

I tried running Windows Repair (all in one) from Bleeping Computer but still the problem remains.

There are no system restore points - the feature seems to be turned off.

The files in Regback are all of zero length so don't constitute a backup.

I've tried booting with all non-MS services disabled and with startup items disabled.

I'm now getting short of ideas and would welcome any other views as to what might be causing this.

Everytime I logon to Windows, about 5 seconds later I get this error:
"Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

Here's some of the data from the error report:
AppName: explorer.exe
AppVer: 6.0.2900.3156
ModName: mscorwks.dll
ModVer: 2.0.50727.1433
Offset: 003386ac

Once I choose not to send the data to Microsoft, I am quickly given another error:
"DrWatson Postmortem Debugger has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

Here's some of the data from that error report:
EventType: BEX
P1: drwtsn32.exe
P2: 5.1.2600.0
P3: 3b7d84a2
P4: dbghelp.dll
P5: 5.1.2600.2180
P6: 4110969a
P7: 0001295d
P8: c0000409
P9: 00000000

Once I choose not to send the data to Microsoft, my desktop and any open explorer windows are locked (meaning that nothing happens if I click on something in the window). The only ways that I've been able to reverse these effects are to restart the computer, or end the drwtsn32.exe in the Task Manager, at which point I am again faced with the Windows Explorer error.

I have tried many different attempts at removing virsuses/Malware/Adware/etc. with many different tools to no avail. A couple other things that I've noticed acting a little screwy:
- If I right click on the desktop/in an explorer window and select "New" from the context menu, the window freezes and I have to close out of it.
- If I try to do a "Search&qu... Read more

yes im aware there is a tenforums for w10 however it seems mostly dead there. i did post a thread there though

so the latest update has caused my machine to open and close windows explorer every second or so. this renders the machine nearly unusable as the loop causes clicks to not be registered or cleared sometimes. i know that this is the update because i did a system restore before the update and it returned to normal. however last night windows decided to update again when i restarted my computer there is no way to disable the updates on preview. -__- i cant restore anymore and am stuck with a nonfuntioning computer because of this "feature". i tried a clean boot with same symptoms as well as another account. i have tracked the issue down to ntdll.dll via event viewer displaying errors causing explorer.exe to crash.

For the past  3 months I have tried every suggested solution imaginable, expending literally dozens of hours  to try to install Feature Updates to upgrade my Windows 10 Pro from v.1607 to v1803 as repeatedly required by Microsoft. The installation process always closes with a not very helpful  "Update Failed to install".  It may be that the error could lie with Lenovo: that the  M91p was not tested and approved for compatibility with the newest MS OS software, see: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-windows_install/check-this-list-to-dete... I think that there must be others with the same problem and that there might just be a usable solution available, but in view of the following I am not over-optimistic: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Windows-10/Windows-10-version-1803-kills-our-computers/m-p/4070948#M654... Is there really no way out other than to switch to another OS because Lenovo might be at fault?  After 30-odd years of Windows, I've got used to using it!  My Lenovo present OS combination still runs fine, but now I am confronted with the equally serious problem that my Adobe Lightroom no longer functions, because it requires a higher OS version than my apparently un-updatable Windows 10 v 1607. What would be the best alternative OS? My Lenovo Y700 has been suffering from an issue since October of 2016, one which I imagine many people on this forum (or at least those of you who have also purchased this laptop model) are aware of. The issue itself wouldn't bother me, if it wasn't for Lenovo's gross negligence and seeming apathy towards customers with the issue. Here is the story behind my infuriation:I bought the Lenovo Y700-15ACZ laptop back in February from my local Best Buy, at the cost of nearly 900USD (including tax), to replace my old Dell laptop, and up until late October I was relatively satisfied with the purchase. Then Windows sent out their latest updates for the AMD graphics driver. At this time, I had no idea what was going on, so I brought the laptop to Geek Squad, at the same Best Buy from which I bought the computer. They explained to me that the issue was caused by an incompatibility between the built-in motherboard graphics card and the AMD video card, a result of the most recent graphics update at the time. So, I had them roll back the computer to before the update in question was released, and disable all automatic updates. It's a good temporary solution, but as many of us probably know, disabling updates means that security updates, as well as graphics updates, will not install, thus putting my computer at an increased risk of malware infection. So, after three months of leaving my Lenovo update-less, I decided that I've tempted fate long enough, and called Geek Squad to arrange an app... Read more

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad P50 laptop that I have been using with an external Dell Ultra HD 4K Monitor P2415Q running with a resolution of 3840x2160 @ 60HZ using DisplayPort.  Initially the laptop was running Windows 10 version 1607. Under this version of Windows 10 the external display worked properly regardless if the BIOS ?Graphics Device? setting was set to ?Hybrid  Graphics? or ?Discrete Graphics.? Unfortunately, since Windows 10 now forces updates when new versions are released I was not able to stay on this version. When Windows 10 updated itself to version 1709 using the external monitor described above stopped working. When the external monitor was plugged in (both DisplayPort and HDMI) it would briefly display an image and then go black. The Nvidia display adapter would then show as not working in the Device Manager. I spent  a significant amount of time working with Lenovo technical support uninstalling and re-installing drivers etc. Nothing worked, I was still not able to use the external monitor. After some further experimenting I found that I could get the external monitor to work if I set the BIOS ?Graphics Device? setting to ?Discrete Graphics.? It would not work with the BIOS set to ?Hybrid Graphics.? Last week Windows updated itself to version 1803 and the external display problems have returned with some additional incorrect behaviors. As I stated in the previous paragraph under version 1709 the external monito... Read more

Windows 10 auto updated to Version 1803 on my Ideapad Yoga 13.  Since then I have no wi-fi connectivity.  I have tried the following. I have the Realtek chipset.  Realtek RTL723AU Wireless LAN 802.11a USB network driver.  Driver Version 1027.4.630.2015 Tried updating the driver but I get the message that this is the latest driver.  However, the date on this driver is from 2015 so I am suspicious. Moving to three different wireless networks results in the same problem.  All other computers and devices on this network are functioning properly. If I run Windows Network Diagnostics I eventually get the error message "Wi-fi" doesn't have a valid IP configuration". Tried "netsh winsock reset" and then "netsh int ip reset" from Windows PowerShell running as Admin and then rebooting.  Does not fix. Tried releasing and renewing IP addresses but got errors message "No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection* X while it has its media disconnected" and well as Media State........Media disconnected. I've set the IP address manually and that didn't work. Any more ideas to try? Thanks!

How can I fix this?

A:Windows 10, version 1803 incompatible with 720s-14ikb(type 81BD)

I have heard of some people getting beyond that error by using the Microsoft Media Creation Tool to create version 1803 installation media on a USB or DVD, and then running the upgrade successfully, but that said, I have also heard that Microsoft has disovered some serious issues with 1803 on laptops that have hybrid video cards (Intel HD and Nvidia discreet etc) and systems with Intel NVMe SSD's, so Microsoft may be pulling back on upgrading those systems until it can iron those problems out, so I personally would wait a bit if either apply.  Cheers,

Has anyone else run into an issue with the video drivers not working with the P50 after the Windows 10 version 1803, April Update? After the update, I've had issues with Windows 10 perpetually needing to use their Microsoft Basic Display Driver instead of the Quadro M2000M drivers.  I've tried updating the drivers from inside Device Manager:  However, while windows found and installed and updated driver, the same result happened when I rebooted. I've gone to the Nvidia website and found the most recent drivers, dated 3/27/2018:  The video drivers from the Lenovo website are dated 9/4/2017, and I've tried them nonetheless, and they did not resolve this Microsoft Basic Display Driver issue. Does anyone else have any insight on this, or are we now in wait mode for Lenovo to generate a working driver?

After forcing me to install the latest Windows 10 update 1803, my Bluetooth can't connect anymore.

Trying to rollback to previous version, problem still exists. Not even clear if it did restore, although I can see now it is version 1709 it also says version 1803 is successfully installed, so it clearly doesn't do a full restore to the previous version (in
that case my Bluetooth would still wok also!)
System restore keeps failing.
Is there any solution for this? Or need to do a full reset of windows, and force to disable windows updates?
Windows updates mainly causes trouble with WIDI, and now Bluetooth also.
No Idea where I can get help, or what is the correct forum to post this.

This problem was completely unexpected. I woke up one morning, found it weird that the pc was on the sp login screen (pc stays on 24/7, its suppose to be on the screensaver password) but anyway I logged on. Shortly after windows was loading, windows crashed (taskbar as well as desktop icons disappeared) but what is really messed is that its stuck in this stupid loop. After it crashes, about 3-5sec later it crashes again, and this keeps going on in that pattern

I'm currently posting from my other computer. I took the main harddrive out of the messed up computer and put it into this one, so I could scan it with whatever I could think of. So far, ad-aware and Norton couldnt find anything that would fix it

any clues on wtf is causing this or what tools I should try?

Have you tried to open anything up on it. Or use the OS. Is this hard drive connected as the slave or is it on its own?

Sorry for starting a thread on this, but from reading about my problem online it seems like a different set of circumstances causing this for each person. So here's what I can tell you.

I was going through and deleting stuff off my hard drive, trying to clear up space and get things a little more stream lined and after uninstalling a program called iLivid I got the "Windows Explorer is not Working" error. As Windows Explorer restarted itself I wasn't too worried having had this happen before. About 2 seconds after Explorer restarted I got the "Windows Explorer Is Not Working" error again, once again letting it restart itself. After it restarted itself the error popped up immediately and now seems to be an infinite loop. I tried restarting but shortly after the computer loaded up it happened again. So now I'm in Safe Mode and the computer is usable. I tried using the System Recovery which let me go back to right before iLivid was uninstalled. Upon completion I thought I had it fixed but 2 or 3 minutes after loading up it happened again. I have about 2-3 seconds between each cycle, enough to maybe open an Explorer alternative allowing me to see and open my programs while not in Safe Mode, but with the error windows constantly popping up running in normal mode is basically pointless.

I've ran the SFC and it hasn't help. Like I said above, I've tried System Recovery to no avail. I've tried fixing the registry, still nothing.

A:Windows Explorer Is Not Working/Windows explorer is restarting Loop

DivXMFSource.dll suggests that it is related to DivX codec, most likely generating thumbnails for some files in the root directory of that drive. It could be a corrupt library on your computer or one of media files on the hard drive.

To confirm it is the thumbnails you could try moving the files away in the command prompt (see move /? for detailed instructions) and checking if the folder opens.

Then you should try re-installing your DivX codec. If the issue persists it is most likely a corrupt media file and you will have to turn thumbnails off to access the folder.

I built my own custom PC through parts I ordered from newegg last week. Putting the computer together was surprisingly the easy part, while installing a windows OS has been ridiculous. I tried installing windows xp for a few days after running into 0x7b bsod errors, finally getting it to the point it would set up and then would reboot and put the monitor in sleep mode. I tried vista which just immediately gave me the "putting the monitor to sleep" thing right after it said "starting windows."

Now i'm trying windows 7 and I once again can't do it. It boots up and does the setting up windows bar, then when it goes to "starting windows" it reboots itself, and does that on repeat. I really hope somebody can help, it's incredibly disheartening to spend $500+ just to have it do anything within its power to not work.

I've tried unplugging everything that isn't neccesary, running 1 stick of RAM, I've tried setting it to IDE, RAID, and HCPI. I have tried 2 separate Windows 7 discs. I've reformatted the HD (using xp) multiple times and tried multiple partitions. Windows 7 simply wont even let me get into the installation portion.

Anybody who could help it would be greatly appreciated, I've been trying to troubleshoot this for a few days now and it's getting tiring.

A:Cannot get any windows version installed, infinite reboot loop?

It boots up and does the setting up windows bar, then when it goes to "starting windows" it reboots itself, and does that on repeat.

Are you saying it gets to the end of the installation? At which step does it fail? Clean Install Windows 7

If it fails at the stage where devices are being started you can try entering Device Manager to uninstall any Devices in error (likely Display) to see if install will complete, then update driver from desktop.

Next try resetting BIOS to defaults. Set SATA controller to AHCI.

Where did you get Win7? Did you burn the DVD yourself or is it retail? Where did you get the alternative disk? Try burning the ISO to DVD using ImgBurn at 4x speed, or write ISO to flash stick using Universal USB Installer with Win7 in dropdown menu.

A:Explorer.exe Crash loop

Try performing a windows repair and see if that helps. You will need your windows xp cd for it. Boot the computer to the windows xp cd. Then on the blue main menu screen choose "enter" like you are going to install windows. Then press "F8" to the license agreement and when the windows xp cd finds your operating system, then simply choose "R" for windows repair.

After the windows repair is done, see if you are still getting issues.

Ok first off I'm working with a Windows 7 Ultimate 64x monster computer it has like 2 or 4 quad core processors, 16 gigs of ram, five 10,000 rpm hard drives, 2 chained video cards and it came with God's email address. I wish I owned this thing, anyway that's a story for anther day.

This guy ask me to come over and have a look at this thing. He said it has worked fine then one night he turned it off and it would never start again. Same ol story as most "no big deal" I tell him. "I'll fix it" So I have a look its at the windows can't start bla bla bla screen I fix computers all day from windows 98 to windows 8 I'll fix anything fear not I say. So I try to enter the bios and set the boot disk drive to start from a windows 7 repair disk I try everything to get in to the bios with no luck. I had to remove the battery to get in to it. then set it to boot from disk and reboot.

(The bios on this thing has more options then I've ever even seen in my life) I run the windows repair disk it can't fix it. I tried everything with no hope. so I have a server tower that holds 5 drives so I slap em in my tower and connect it to my laptop I can see everything seems fine it's all there it just will not boot. I tell the guy I may have to just wipe it and reinstall everything. So I back up all his files and format the drives. I reinstall windows and its all good. everything is working. Next day he calls me it did it again. same story all over again. I just can't fix it. ... Read more
