Preferred Solution: Thumb Error, How-to Fix ?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am getting an error "The Bitlocker Encryption on this drive is not compatible with your version of Windows. Try opening in a newer version of Windows."

The drive was encrypted on Windows 7 Enterprise.  I am running Windows 10 Pro.  I get this same behavior on another PC running Windows 10 Pro.  The hardware is a Surface 3 upgraded from Home to Pro.  TPM 2.0 is enabled.

How do I fix this?

I am running XP on a dual-core AMD processor, 3 Gigs of memory and 320 Gig HD. For the last couple of weeks I have been getting an error message each time I safely remove the SanDisk Cruzer mini (128 meg- USB thumb drive).

I use the standard procedure of clicking on the icon near the clock, selecting the SanDisk choice from the options given, telling it to stop--- The light goes off on the thumb-drive, and I get the message that it is safe to remove the thumb-drive. Within a couple seconds I also get the error message pictured below.
Any thoughts you might have would be greatly appreciated

Hey, I am experiencing a weird problem when I wanted to transfer video files from my xp dektop to my vista laptop. Vista is able to detect my thumb drive but whenever I attempt to copy the video files to my hard drive or even try opening the video file from my thumbdrive a pop up message occurs, "windows is encoutering a problem. windows explorer is restarting." I have tried reinstalling the drivers, formatted my laptop harddisk, formatted my thumbdrive using xp and vista but I am unable to solve this problem. Is there any solution for this or this is a compatability issue between xp and vista?

Many thanks.

A:Error Transferring Video Files From XP to Vista Using Thumb Drive.

I had the same problem with a 32 Gig flash drive and the advise from this forum was that - for some reason - the capacity of the thumb drive is "layered" meaning that you can't just dump a 5 gig file onto the drive as it gets scattered in the process across the so called layers.

I kind of confirmed this my transferring a very small video - about 1.5 gig - and it went across fine.

Kind of annoying I reckon. Maybe somebody will respond helping us both out on this one!

Hi.

I have a dell 8400 running XP Sp 3. For some time now I have not been able to read my thumb drives. When I plug them in it simply returns "Unknown Device" error. I have deleted the usb ports and let XP rediscover them as well as having reloaded the chipset firmware. Still nothing. The thumb drives work fine on other systems and other usb devices (printers keyboard & mouse) work fine. Any ideas out there?

I keep having Thumb.db's appear in almost every folder i have that has any information. These cannot be opened with any usually program and come out as random scribbles in notepad and Microsoft word. And when i delete them, they come back in about 2 seconds. What are these doing and how do i get rid of them?

I ran searches in Spybot, Ad-Aware, Microsoft Anitspyware, and e-Trust, they detcted some spyware like Winfixer but that was deleted. I also had AVG but i deleted it because i thought it might have been the cause of the problem. AFter those i got HiJack This and it came out with this log:

A:I keep having Thumb.db's appear

Hello and Welcome. Please subscribe to this thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted.

Thumbs.db is not something to worry about. It's a hidden file generated by the Windows operating system. Since it is "hidden," not everyone sees it (even though it exists) unless they have chose to "Show hidden files." It is a database file containing the small images displayed when you view a folder in "thumbnail" view (as opposed to tile, icon, list, or detail view).

If you want to turn OFF this feature, here's how:

1. Open up the Control Panel
2. Select Folder Options
3. Click the View tab (see picture below)
4. Check "Do not cache thumbnails"
5. Click the OK button

Please re-install AVG onto your machine. In this day & age, surfing the internet without the protection of an antivirus program is like begging for a bullet.

I'd try copying the files it won't play over to the local drive. Then you can find out if it is a problem with your drive, files, or if you are just using to much RAM on other things- netbooks typically can't run tons of apps at once since they usually only come with 1-2GB

When you eject the USB flash drive do you click the Safely Remove Icon before pulling it out? If you don't, it will have a hard time connecting next time you put it in.
If the USB Flash Drive is not recognized when you put it in, go to Start/Run and type devmgmt.msc and press enter. In the Device Manager are there any devices with a Yellow Flag or under Universal Serial Bus Controllers is there an Unknown Device? If so, right click it and Uninstall it, then remove the Flash Drive and restart your computer. Put the Flash drive into a different USB port. If you don't want to restart, put the USB into a different USB port and in the Device Manager, Right click Any device and choose Scan For Hardware Changes. You should get New Hardware Found.

No new drive was indicated on "My Computer" (using XP). Exchanged thumb drive at store. Came home and tried again in all 4 USB ports as before, same results. Tried it in our laptop and drive was indicated in "Computer" (using 7). Tried a same model but older HP 4gb drive, with data already on it in the original computer and it worked as it should as did 2 PNY sticks. Any guesses? Thanks.

I run Vista and found somekind of conflict in installing the driver on this platform for UMAX Astra Scanner#3400. Have been bombarded by various update driver programs...but none of them will tell me whether or not (after I buy their program)that their driver update will solve the one problem as stated above. Maybe nothing will work on the Vista Platform ???? Maybe it's just incompatable with that scanner??? I have been thinking about a USB thumb drive or stick drive and is there enough capacity on one of these stick drives to accommaadate a new platform and under which I may be able to install the driver for the scanner??? HELP!!! I just bought a new PNY 8gb thumb drive for my Dell E6400 laptop running XP. It worked great for the first few tries. Today, every time I plug it in the USB port I keep getting "Cannot find HOnEq.Exe"
I don't know why it's not auto-playing, and allowing me to read the files I put on the thumb drive earlier. But, I can go to My Computer, and right click on the thumbdrive to view the contents. But why did it stop automatically recognize the thumbdrive and why is that warning constantly popping up. There is no virus..I scanned that. All devices appear to be working. Should I return the thumb drive and get a different brand/model? Or is there a simple fix? Also, I checked to update the driver but it said I already had the latest driver. Did something get corrupted? HELP!!!

A:PNY 8gb Thumb Drive

The most likely situation is that the thumb drive got a virus which was later removed by your antivirus or someone else's. In that case there will still be a file (probably a hidden and system file) called "Autorun.inf". If you delete that file the drive will be back to normal.

In case you don't know, to show hidden and system files go to tools>Folder options>view, check show hidden files and folders and uncheck hide protected Opperating system files.

Somehow only one of my thumb drives has been assigned to a port/hub which is usb 1.1. I would like to get it unassigned from port 1/hub 6 and let it find an USB 2.0 port/hub.

There are no warnings in device manager and the thumb drive always works, just slower than before.

I have re-formatted the drive, uninstalled the drive but each time Win7 finds it, it reassigns it to port1/hub 6. I have even uninstalled the hub.

I do have a drive letter assigned to thumb drive. Nothing else uses that drive letter.

I repeat that other thumbs behave properly. (IE use usb 2 ).

Any suggestions

A few days ago I bought an 8gb flash drive, but when I tried it on my computer, it didn't seem to work properly. I was trying to transfer over a large file ( >2gb) and the first 1/3 of the file transferred in like 30 seconds, but then the speed dropped right down and it told me 3 hours remaining. I tried several other files and the same thing occurred. And yes, I remembered to format it to NTFS since it came FAT32.

Since I figured it was a problem with the thumb drive, I brought it back to the store to exchange it. The guy at the store decided to test it on his computer, and it seemed to be working fine. His computer was running XP and I'm running Windows 7 so maybe that's an issue somewhere? Anyways, he gave me a different model thumb drive since mine wasn't working for me.

The new one had the same issues. I even tried smaller files such as pictures, but it would take forever to copy. I even tried the drive on my dad's computer which is also running Windows 7, and it had the same problem. But his 512mb flash drive seemed to work fine on his computer.

I finally said screw it and just went and bought a SanDisk flash drive since the first one I bought was a refurbished one from a discount store. This one won't work properly either, and the package specifically mentions that it's compatible with Windows 7.

I've tried updating and then uninstalling/reinstalling all my usb drivers to no avail. I don't have a clue as to why these ... Read more

Not quite as bad as yours but I had similar problems with flash drives formatted NTFS. NTFS is slower by a very noticable amount. The only reason I can see to use NTFS on a flash drive is if you are going to store files larger than 4G.

A:Thumb nails cannot adjust

Have the actual images survived intact, and just the thumbnails don't work? In that case go to C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\ and delete the thumbcache files. That should force Windows to rebuild the thumbnails. However if the pictures themselves are damaged, it will be neigh impossible to restore their quality.

A:thumb drive not showing up

Ummm....don't assign a drive letter in admin tools as this is a removable drive and will be assigned a drive letter dynamically. If new fixed drives or network drives are added the letter will automatically change.

I have two partitions set up on my usb thumb drive. On the first partition it is a version of Linux (Slax) that I use for emergency boots (the fs is Fat16). On the second, I have a standard Fat32 filesystem. But, when I plug in the drive while in windows, only the first partition shows up. I have made both the partitions bootable. Any help would be appreciated.

I bought a new sigmatel thumb drive MP3 player. it is not recognised by computer drive letter both in winme and winxp after plugging. Unless the drive letter appears for this usb device it cannot be formatted. it asks to be reformatted for putting it to use. I have the original driver CD and also followed the troubleshooting tips from the sigmatel website. but nothing works. can anyone guide.

Plug it into XP, then right click on My Computer, Manage, Disk Management. You should be able to format it there. It won't appear as a drive letter in My Computer until it's formatted.

How do you partition a thumb drive? Obviously, Windows cannot do it natively, but when I used GParted to partition it, it failed. I can created a 16GB partition on a 32GB drive, but I cannot for the life of me format the other half.

A:partitioning thumb drive

I have been testing partition software since RC and Partition Manager 10 is able to do it.

Is there a way to elimante the software from the USB Thumb Drives that the manufacturer insists in attempting to install whenever you plug one of these in? I don't want to use Memorex's U3 software but I can not see any way to get rid of it on the drive.
Thanks

I have a 1GB thumb drive that my computer suddenly claimed needed to be reformatted. I reformatted it and it looks like the size is nearly 8GB.

What? Why? How?

A:1GB thumb drive reformatted as 8GB...

Maybe you can try to load a file bigger than 1gig to the thumb drive and see if you get any message about not enough space. You can also try the thumb drive with other computers and see if they do the same

I have a sandisk cruzer glide 16gb thumb drive that seems to be no good.
it was plugged in and I was triing to d/l too many files at the same time, it seemed to freeze and I couldn't
cancel the transfer, finally the transfer window closed so I decided to close down my computer whilst leaving the drive plugged in, and turn it back on later (hopeing that the drive would be recognised, it wasn't).
I've tried numerous times since to plug the drive in and let windows recognise it to no avail.
Does this mean that the drive is dead or is there a way for me to fix it?
cheers
phil

Can it be done if I want to be the only person in the entire solar system who can view and use whatever I put on it? If so, how?

Thx.

A:Encrypting a thumb drive

How about if you and the NAS (with enough time and computer power) were the only ones in the entire solar system who could view and open the contents? Many thumb drive manufacturers include an encryption function for their drives. It may be in the form of a program that needs to be installed from the drive or downloaded.

For example, SanDisk includes a Windows version of their SecureAccess(tm) 128 bit AES encryption program on the drive, with a mac version available for download,

If you want to be able to use a thumb drive to install Windows see the below tutorial. If you just want to back up files and folders on the thumb drive just use the Send to command in the right click menu or simply copy and paste it to the drive

If you intend to reinstall Windows use this guide to do so which should work on Vista also
