Impossible boot in other SO via USB

Q: Impossible boot in other SO via USB

I tried - unsuccessfully - to boot my new Pavilion x360 with USB pen drive with Ubuntu Live but the pc always starts Windows 10, even ignoring changes of boot priority in bios. Why not ? Please can you help me teaching me the correct actions and steps? Thanks in advance.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I cannot boot in either safe or normal mode. When attempting to boot in safe mode, the drivers will load, I wait, the screen goes black & I get the words "safe Mode" in all 4 corners, the cursor moves, but nothing else. Sometimes I simply get a blue screen with a moveable curor. When running a diagnostic I get "boot manager is corrupt or missing". I cannot run system restore. I have the Vista 64 recovery disks from HP , but the computer will not boot from them (the choice to boot from the cd never appears); however, the computer will run the Vista 64 recovery disk I got from the internet, but it cannot find an operating system to repair. I have one 200gb hard drive, however when I run chkdsk, it calls the drive X & says there is only 3 gb there. One more thing, while booting I noticed the opportunity to go into the raid utility by pushing crtl N. I never put raid on my computer & there is no evidence of it in the boot consol. The computer is an HP Pavilion with an AMD Quad core processor runing windows 64, 6gb of ram, 200 gb hard drive. Of course I do not want to do a clean install of windows because I have a great deal on my HD I do not want to loose. Thank you in advance for your help!!

Hello everyone, Here is my issue. I just got a deal on a brand new HP Probook 450 G3 that came with a 1To HDD and Windows 10 pre-installed. I used the spare money to purchase an Windows 7 Pro x64 license and a Sandisk 256Gb SSD. My intention was to pull the original HDD out and do a clean install of Windows 7 on the SSD. I have gone absolutely bonkers after 72 hours of trying... Sorry in advance if I state the obvious or if I do not use the right wording. I know a little but am definitely not a wiz. So here goes.  PROBLEM 1: Impossible to Enable Secure Boot and Install Windows 7 I unplugged the HDD and swapped it with the SSD. Using Rufus, I created a bootable USB stick formatted as Fat32 and partitioned as GPT since my Bios defaults to UEFI. I stuck the USB device in the computer, went to F10 - BIOS Setup. My BIOS is version N78 Ver. 1.06 12/18/2015 (latest). The USB device is properly recognized as a UEFI device. In BIOS Setup  >>  Advanced  >>  Secure Boot Configuration, I switched to Legacy Support Enable and Secure Boot Disable then Save. In Boot Options, I unchecked Fast Boot. Below, UEFI Boot Order is greyed out and cannot be unchecked. Only the device booting order can be tweaked so I ranked the USB device first. Below, Legacy Boot Order is greyed out and cannot be unchecked. Instead of a device list as with UEFI Boot Order, the following sentence is written: "Enable Legacy Boot, Save Settings & Ex... The simplest method is to use a SATA to usb adapter and a  cloning utility. I have an Apricorn adapter and Acorn cloning utility that was delivered with a Crucial SSD I purchased as a migration kit.  Other great cloning utilities are Paragon software's  Migrate OS to SSD. Using this method takes about 30 minutes or therabouts. If you prep the SSD with the Diskpart utility you should be able to use the recovery media to install the operating system. Once the SSD has been cleaned, a partition created, has been formatted ,  and been made active  then there shouldn'd be an issue using it as the primary disk in a notebook.

So recently, after trying out the Windows 7 RC 32-bit for a couple of months, I decided to try to install normal Windows 7 64-bit as a fresh clean install. Upon installing Windows 7 64-bit, everything went smoothly and entered the desktop. However, after being in the desktop for 5 seconds, the computer restarted itself and then went into system recovery. Finding this strange, I loaded up the installation disc and tried to repair the OS to see if there were any problems, but it found none. While still being in the disc installation screen, I tried to reformat and install Windows 7 32-bit instead, thinking it was a 64-bit problem. However, it did the exact same thing the 64-bit installation did.

Thinking that Windows 7 might have been a problem, I decided to go back to Vista so I could at least have an OS on my computer. I used System recovery to revert back to the OS that is defaulted on my computer (Vista 32-bit Home Premium with bloatware) and tried to go to 64-bit on that. However, this also yielded the same problem and did the same when I tried to fresh install 32-bit as well.

I'm currently running off the backup that came off my computer from Gateway, but I'm seriously confused as to why I cannot install any OS on my computer whatsoever, when I've clearly reformatted Vista 32-bit in the past. I haven't tried upgrading to the Windows 7 RC again, because I've already spent 4 days reformatting, re-installing, and trying multiple things I've f... Read more

Hello,

My Toshiba Satellite U400 wasn't working well at all (very slow) because of an old and infested installation of Windos Vista. I formatted with a live-cd of GParted, in order to install a new version of Windows.

But since I formatted it, I can't even boot on a CD (I checked of course the priority boot option in the BIOS)... I tried with others live-cd (linux ones) to check if the problem was from my CD and not my computer... Well, it seems that it comes from my computer.

After long hours of searching, I found out that there was a restoration partition set by Toshiba, and I probably erased it, but I don't see how it could affect the boot options.

Any suggestions ? I'm starting to be desesperate

Have a good day,
Cheers

I have come to the conclusion that it is impossible to configure this laptop to dual boot Windows 7 and 8.1, unless anyone knows better. The issue seems to be with the BIOS settings which appear to be mutually exclusive to booting either Windows 7 or Windows 8.x ? but not both.
Whether opting for a MBR or GPT configuration, or installing Windows 8 from USB media or within Windows 7 the issue remains.
I ?downgraded? the pre-installed, bloatware ridden Windows 8.1 on this laptop to a clean install of Windows 7 Pro with no problems using default Windows 7 BIOS settings (Win 7 OS, load default settings) on a 500GB partition using DISKPART as per directions on this site. The problem occurs when trying to install Windows 8.1 on the remaining unallocated 500GB partition on my hard drive using these Windows 7 optimised BIOS settings. When booting 8.1 directly from USB (downloaded 8.1 ? same version - using Windows media creation tool as I have OEM key in BIOS) the installation will freeze (no mouse pointer) on the initial ?select keyboard layout? screen. What happens to UEFI and CSM when you choose Win7 optimized default? Can you wipe the HD to remove all code then boot Win7 as a UEFI device, install it to first partiiton, then boot Win8 as UEFI device and install to second partition? What exact error or failure do you get?

What if you set CSM enabled and first to boot, then try the above?

What if you set CSM enabled, first to boot, and then load Win7 optimized defaults?

Are there other choices besides Win8 and Win7 optimized defaults?

ok here is what..I may be late to reply, something better than nothing. Well dude dual booting is a story of the past. No one really is dual booting also the current Bios marufacturers dont engourage it either. How ever there are cases where it is still possible but with a success rate is low and it is usually unstable. Now how about you try installing your WIN8.1 OS through WIN7 OS?Yes I mean through a virtual box/virtual machince. But remember, you will need a very good amount of RAM if you are going to do it on Windows 7...Consider using LINUX instead of 7.  A few options are Fedora, CENT OS, Ubuntu, Linux Mint, etc...  A

Hi all,
I have a laptop with pre-installed Win8x64 and wanted to try dual booting with an additional Win7x64 VHD install (on a single physical disk), in order to challenge performances.

Everything ran quite fine (repartitioning, VHD attachment, install). But, at bootup-time, though I got the blue modern boot wizard raising with my two OS entries, I only can regularly boot on Windows 8. Any attempt on booting Windows 7 leads to Windows 8's "preparing restore..." screen and I'm back to some WinPE-style assistant that allows me to boot on Windows 8, or reboot the laptop...

I tried using Boyans' DualBoot repair tool with no luck. Only get a cryptic (to me) error message that somebody (himself? ^^) is presumably able to explain to me.
Please do, then.

to get the system working, I have found how to do it with a simple MS DOS prompt command using 11 characters after over 24 hours of trying different things. Would you be interested to know and purchase this information from me?

5 partitions: windows recovery, win7 system, a data ntfs sharing partition, then an extended partition holding my linux debian (with a swap partition and a system partition)
This laptop wasn't used, I just set it up properly and was continuing to use my current laptop.
I got it back few days ago and was mainly using linux on it. Everything was fine. Of course I had to update Debian to the latest version but all was smooth.
I tried to boot on windows yesterday because I downloaded an mpz file that needs windows archiver... Anyway, at my big surprise windows was crashing...

Hi,Many times this problem occurs when the hard drive has failed or is failing. However, it could also be a corrupted boot sector. To enable legacy mode and disable secure boot try crating a supervisor password in the Bios, you can disable the password later when you have changed the wanted settings (important, do not forget or loose the password). Now try going into recovery mode "Recovery when Windows 10 does not start correctly" https://support.hp.com/hk-en/document/c04758961 Try to perform a startup repair. Let me know if you need further help,David

Every time I start the computer, I get a pop-up appearing right before the user log on screen. It says "Fixed" and will not let me exit out, so I can only perss "OK" to bypass it. The log on screen is normal and any user can be selected to log on. But, when selcted to log on, it loads personal settings, flashes the desktop and immediately logs off and saves the settings. I can not get to the desktop, so I can not scan for viruses or delete files. I really don't want to hear the computer is forever inoperable. Any advice would be appreciated!

I have installed on my computer a new PC only version of Windows 8. I've not purchased a new PC for about 8 years so its impossible it came with the computer, I built the computer myself.

I remember I brought an upgrade copy of Win8 in error, I got it from PC world. I still have those disk but now I also have this new PC version. I remember going back to PC to tell them I brought it in error I also remember calling the MS helpline.

Can anyone make sense of this? How did this copy come to be working on this computer?

I'm currently wanting to do a clean install but I can't because I can't workout what happened in the past

HELP

Cheers

A:How is this even impossible?

Sounds like you may have an OEM System Builder versions of Windows 8. It is intended to be installed by someone or a company building a new computer that is to be resold. That particular version includes a personal use license which allows anyone to buy an OEM System Builder copy of the software and install it on a (new or old) PC that is intended for personal use. It should have come with an installation key.

Here is some more information on the ZDnet web site.

I was messing with the file associations...

Now I can't open folders in the same window anymore.
Nor can I delete the associations I had made.

My Computer -> C: -> same tree

after that

XYZ folder and its subs all open independently

DESPITE FOLDER OPTIONS BEING RESET AND RECONFIGURED!

Is there any way to fix this? Other than a reinstall?

A:Maybe impossible to help me...

If you have a recent restore point you can go that route and restore your computer to a point before you changed this.Any other programs or settings will revert back to that time.

I have a folder in my external terabyte that appeared some time ago. I can not delete it with any software. I tried to delete with DOS and it says all the same. The problem is that it will not let me downgrade it to a write-able format. It seems to be locked in READ ONLY status. I have attempted to take ownership of the drive and the files, but I can not get rid of it. When I first noticed it, it was random letters. When I tried to delete the file it turned into many many "Z's". When I ran the DOS delete protocol it changed into 6 "Z's"; with in that folder is a empty folder called "Update". Since then I have not been able to do anything about it. I don't know what to do. I even downloaded a program called Delete on Boot, and still no success. I have been coming here for about a year when I caught the Rogue Internet Security 2010. It was since then, 12/30/09 the day that i reformatted to yield to the virus's victory that the file first appeared in the external hard drive. I am wits end and I know someone out there can help me. Please tell me what to do. I was told that it was very complex and destructive hack file. Am I infected again?

Hey guys it's me again with my annoying and those that seem to be impossible-to-fix-problems.

Well 3 months ago i bought an AMD 5600+ Dual Core and i had lots of problems since then, believing it was defective, i wrote to AMD support and requested an RMA. My replacement arrived today. It fixed LOTS of random crashes and my computer was able to boot up properly with both rams placed on in dual channel. I went to play on Soulstorm, it crashed, sometimes half way through a game or sometimes about 5 minutes into the game. I went on another game which is Company of Heroes, it crashed too.

The only reason i tested these 2 games was because they crashed most of the times when i had the defective processor.I thought it was the RAM but i thought it wouldn't make any sense because while waiting for my replacement to arrive, i put in my old AMD Athlon 3500+ and it worked fine with EVERY SINGLE games so it couldn't be the RAM and it can't be the replacement either. Not knowing what else to do, i took one stick of ram out, and guess what? It worked like a charm ! I really have no idea what's going on inside but if anyone had been through this or anyone who knows how to fix please help and....ermm if it works you'll be able to rest assured that a person on earth is grateful and just wants to kill you with hugs XD

Holy cow I am hoping someone here can help me out for I am pulling my hair out one strand at a time.

I have a Sony Vaio All-In-One 3D touch screen computer [VPCL22SFX] that is having an issue and I am unable to figure out what exactly is going on. It does not lack in processing power or RAM which makes this even more difficult. This PC has worked perfectly since I bought it but now it seems there is something wrong and I can't figure it out. About 3 months ago it started slowing down at certain times and I have exhausted everything I know to help diagnose what the issue could be and I am coming up with nada. I only use this PC for accessing MS Office and internet surfing so I keep it very clean. When I go to YouTube the video and audio stutters and brings the PC down to a crawl. I will attempt to move the mouse at the same time and it also stutters or skips all over the place. When I try to copy data over from the PC to an external hard drive [or vice versa] the mouse exhibits the same behavior. I am on a wired connection and I am getting about 40 MBPS downloads and 4 MBPS uploads on AT&T Uverse, and I run speed tests all the time so I know the number is consistent. I have used Hiren's Boot CD to test the CPU, the RAM, the fans, the hard drive, the video card and the audio and it passes all the tests. I also used VAIO Care to test everything as well as Bluetooth, BD drive, etc. and it passed all those tests as well. I ran a check for spyware and malware...nothing w... Read more

For weeks now, I've been getting these Russian popups on several different websites that I frequent. I don't know how to get rid of them! I've run a plethora of malware programs and anti-virus programs and they still come up! I've left pictures below of what they look like, can anyone help me get rid of them?!

I haven't installed any toolbars or free programs recently.
No one but my son has been on my computer and he only checked my mail for me while I was in hospital.
I've tried opening Firefox in safe mode but it still happens (also happens in IE).
I've checked Firefox Add Ons and there's nothing fishy there.
Any idea how to make them go away?
This is what it looks normally (with Adblock Plus on)

My hard drive failed a few months back, turned it on one day and got a series of clicks and chirp sounds and it was dead. I tried a couple things suggested on here but none of them helped and ended up installing windows on a new drive. I recently found an indentical model number to the one I have on ebay(a Hitachi Deskstar for a Dell). When I receive it, I'll plug it in to make sure it works, then i'm going to attempt a disk swap between the two. I had to find a funky size torx bit for the outer screws and now I see the disk is attached with another torx that is a bit smaller so i'll need one of those too. I know this should be done in a clean room and even then it's supposed to be a hit or miss and it's likely not to work. I figured i'd give it a shot for the $28 it costs for the new drive with shipping. Am I wasting my time or do I have a slim chance of being successful? And no, I hadn't made any backups from that drive, partly because of the crappy NEW Pioneer dvd-r drive I had returned just before this happened(a couple others posted issues in this forum regarding that model also around the same time I did).

I'm having real problems with this and the guides online cover different parts but don't work.
1. I have windows xp
2. I want to install windows 7 64 bit
3. I do not have a dvd, it's on an external HDD
4. I want to instal windows 7 on a 2nd HDD and dual boot.

My first problem is that I get the 'We are unable to create or save new files in the folder which the application was downloaded'. Apparently this is because its 64 bit and I'm in XP. I need to boot from the USB drive and load the windows disk from there? Is that right? How do I do that without my normal XP booting? Can I boot from the USB and install on to the 2nd HHD?

A step by step approach would be amazing if someone could talk me through it? If it's not possible I can buy a blank dvd and burn it and remove my other HDDs, but that's a real pain.

Any help would be great

Hello Guys, I have a really big problem which I can't solve it.
Recently I bought a 2GB Micro SD card from someone and I attempt to format it but i'm receiving a message: "Windows was unable to complete the format".
Tryed to delete them but an error is occurring.
I did an AVG Antivirus, SuperAntiSpyware, Trojan Remover and STOPzilla! scan but i find three viruses:
-Worm/AutoRun.MB
-Worm/Brontok.EZ
-Klif Trojan
but its pointless since after I remove them, they reapear.
I've attempted to delete them with Unlocker but it requires to restart and after that they reapear again.
I've even Booted a Partition Manager an wipe/delete the partition on the card using all the 35 steps format it and it took me 4 hrs. but no use. They are still there.
And even formating my card on my other friend's phones/digital cameras and is no use. The files are still there.
The card contains 220MB of corrupted, cross-linked and virused files. I tried to scandisk it but after the scan and repair, the same exact files remained there. Its like the card has a secret reservoir which replaces back all the "bad" files.

A retailer lent me a NetGear G Router+Modem - SAME RESULT AS ABOVE.

Today a telephone engineer came and checked my line for faults. FINE. A1.

Now, my Speedtouch with Router WORKS.

So...EVERYONE says it's impossible that the others DO NOT work.

I'm told that if you simply plug a modem into any phone point with ASDL- you will get an ASDL light. I don't with the new stuff.

My friend does.
