Preferred Solution: Lenovo S540 shutsdown when booting

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi guys, Looking to purchase the latest Lenovo Ideapad s540 (81NE003GIN). The standard config is an 15 8th gen and comes with 8gb of RAM and a 1TB SSD. I'd like to know what if any parts of this laptop are upgradeable, without possibly affecting the warranty. Can I upgrade my RAM to 16gb? Also, I've been told the laptop screen has a max brightness of 250 nits. Is that sufficient enough for viewing videos in HD? Also if any of you current s540 owners have any issues with baclight bleeding of keypad issues, please let me know - looking to purchase this asap. Much thanks!

Hi, I had an accident with my laptop and althought they fixed it for some reason one of the two word files I was working on is lost. I dont know if may be in my panic I saved one over the other but the two recovery (.tmp files) that Windows created are both different versions of just one file. I tried to access previous versions but although that option is ON on my laptop there are no previous versions of these files (although I've worked on them for several days). Please help! Is there any other way I can try and restore the second file as well?

Hello, Since two weeks my Lenovo Thinkpad screen flickers on the right side and on boot up or recover from stand by. This becomes pretty annoying and I have updated all the drivers and also upgrading to Windows 10 didn't work neither. The warranty was due June this year, so I don't know that if I have to repair it that it will cost money. But I think it's strange for a screen to be broken in one year and 3 months. If you perhaps know a solution for this or know how it will be handled by Lenovo if I send it away for repairs please tell me. Yours faithfully, Joost Kolkhuis Tanke

This morning I received my order for new memory for my laptop and after getting all excited... it didn't work   Old memory was: 1x HMT41GS6AFR8ANew memory is: 2x KVR16LSE11/8 I tried all combinations (new banks alone, 2gether with old, different slot, etc), it just never boots (no BIOS screen, nothing). I this topic: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-S-Series-ThinkPad-Yoga/Thinkpad-S540-RAM-Upgrade/td-p/1542834 I read:Your system will support DDR3 PC3-12800 & DDR3 PC3-14900 DDR3 (non-ECC), as your system was shipped with DDR3 PC3-12800, I suggest you to go for the same. You can check with 4GB PC3-12800 DDR3L SDRAM 1600MHz SODIMM.

Hello everyone There have been plenty of threads about poor wifi performance on Lenovo S540.  But this is a new story. It is not poor, it is unhealthily terrible. I purchased S540 in summer 2014 and yes, wifi was weak but tolerable. Around 1 month ago, without a notice and without any intervention from my side, it became unhealthily weak. I mean it, 1 meter from router is more or less fine (three bars out of five), 2 meters  - weak and unstable, 3 meters - it doesn't even see the network. No barriers between router and laptop, of course The problem is not with router. That's because I tried two different routers, two different ISPs (and iphone hotspot just in case)- same story in every instance. Also, other devices in my family - laptops, smartphones and tablets - work just fine with existing wifi network. The problem is not with specific wifi card. I replaced wifi card (Intel N 7260) with the new one (nb. and probably lost guarantee by that) but nothing changed at all. The problem is not with software. I have all latest drivers and BIOS, and I also tested the problem under Windows 10 and under Ubuntu liveUSB - absolutely same symptoms, 3 meters from router = no wifi networks seen. P.S. LAN internet works perfectly fine, problem is only with wifi. From the above testings I conclude that problem is with hardware, but not wifi card - is it possibe? I would appreciate any thoughts or ideas on how I should... So I bought  a new s540 without an os. Installed Windows 10, ran automatic updates, installed other drivers manually etc...When I connect the laptop to an external monitor nothing happens - trying on different monitors and cables.I thought I had a damaged product so went back to the store for a replacement. A few days later I got the replacement - same exact problem. The sales representative said it is probbly a problem with the whole line. Is that so? I just returned it to get my money back. Is it a known problem? I see that I'm not the only one having this problem. I've been a Lenovo user for most of my life and would like to remain one. Can you please suggest a fix? I'm not going to buy another s540 / ideapad model until I can find a solution.  Thanks, Samuel

So I got a new laptop, a Lenovo s540-14IWL. Everything is great about it, other than the fact that the bezel is not glued properly to the screen at the right and left edges.I had this problem on the original one I got and also on two replacements. I decided to keep it because the price was very good and I really like it. The other options were not nearly as good and as a programmer I need to have a computer all the time. I was wondering if someone could offer some help?I got 2 options:- Live with it.- Send it to the lab under warranty as it's only about a week old (Problem is I saw their work on my cousin's laptop and it wasn't good). Can it cause any further damage to the computer if I leave it like that. To the eye it's not as bad as it looks in the picture. One important note: If I hold it with my hands it will glue back and look perfect for a few minutes (When it was new it stayed for longer) until it goes back to its' original state. Thanks a lot for taking the time to read my post! Here are some pictures:When staring in front of the laptop:Right Side:Left Side:After touching it with my fingers for a few seconds:

I've just bought a Lenovo G50 30, and I'm planning to install Linux on it. I don't want to boot it to Linux so that I can claim a refund on the Windows licence. When I boot  the laptop, it doesn't seem to give me an opportunity to go into the biops settings so that I can change the boot sequence to boot from the Linux installation CD - how can I do this?

hi Tim_E,

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

Can you try the following:
1. Boot into the BIOS via the UEFI Firmware Settings or by pressing the OneKey Recovery button (while the computer is turned off).
   - Link to picture

2. Once in the BIOS, set the following settings (if applicable) to boot from a Linux installation disc.

Security Tab:
Secure Boot = Disabled

Boot Tab:
Boot Mode = Legacy
Boot Priority = Legacy First

Exit Tab
OS Optimized Defaults = Other OS or Disabled

Note:
Please backup all important files and create a recovery drive before making changes to the HDD.

My Lenovo Laptop recently has stopped working. It turns on and everything, it just cannot boot up.The loading screen pops up and everything, but it won't go to the login screen. When I power the laptop on, it goes on the loading screen, and stays like that for a good 5-8 minutes, then gets an error message that says"Process1_Initialization_Failed"Then it tries to go into System Recovery, but after "Loading Files" it goes into the loading screen, then transitions into a black screen. There are no options, just a black screen.I wait for an hour, and absolutely nothing happens.I made sure nothing else is plugged in except for the Charger. The laptop is a Lenovo Y51.If you need anymore information, please ask. I really need this fixed soon.

Hidy ho all,

I have a Lenovo G505s I bought in august. Up to this point, its been a great machine. This morning (11/20/2014) I installed some updates from windows update. around 4:30 PM today, I rebooted the machine, because I had an hour break in between classes. During that reboot it tried to install those updates, and it said it failed. After the failure it said it was reverting back to the prior state before the updates were installed.

It then rebooted again. It got to the Lenovo splash screen, and some little white text on the bottom of the screen has said for the past half hour "Updating your system (5%)" with the windows 8 little circle thing spinning around just above it.

I did try restarting it by holding down the power button, but it came right back to this screen.

Google has turned up nothing yet. Has anyone else had this issue? If so, have they (you) been able to fix it?

A:Lenovo G505s not booting

I think the quickest way around this issue is to let the OS try to install the updates it might take a while to do so(which is a pain) but I would wait because you don't want to mess up your system you might loose more than the time you will wait

Hi guys,I fresh reinstalled windows yesterday and allowed it to collect updates overnight, including drivers. This morning I wake up and powering on the machine, I am greeted with a recovery screen. Selecting exit and continue brings me back to the recovery screen.I tried refreshing it from that screen, though it asks for recovery media, of which there appears to be none, even when I have a properly configured and bootable recovery media USB key inserted. As a recovery bootable device I use a lexar 8 gb USB drive. The machine has no optical drive. The only thing I can gather is that USB and or legacy boot mode are not enabeled. As I am totally blind, I have very little knowledge of the bios of this particular device, and any decent explanations are scarce.I know how to get to them (press f2 for bios and f12 for boot menu I believe) though anything else is beyond me.Could somebody tell me what to press at the keyboard to enable USB mode, and or legacy mode, if that particular option is needed? And by the way, for those curious about how I gathered information about the recovery screens, I use an app called seeing AI, which takes screenshots of anything you tell it to, and tries to tel you what it sees.Even with good lighting, the seeing AI app isn't of much use to help navigating the bios menu. Most problematic, I can't tell exactly what order the app sees the options, as compared to what order they are actually in.I would be most greatful if anyone could help, as this is the only ... Hello.  I do not know where to create a "New" post so I am replying to this somewhat related post.  I have a M710q ThinkCenter Tiny and I have been having this problem since November, 2018.  When I was on vacation in November, my wife called me to report that my M710q has been rebooting on its own on "Preparing automatic repair" so I told her to just power it down.  When I got home from vacation, I tried to boot from the emergency disc that I created for this system.  It won't boot to the emergency repair options, instead, it goes to the "Your PC encountered an error and we need to repair it..." then it goes through the "Preparing automatic repair...".  I bought an SSD drive, bought a Win10 Pro license from MS hoping to just install a new OS.  BUT it won't let me boot up to the installation DVD!  It goes to "Preparing automatic repair...".  What should I do?  Is it the bios that is causing this problem?  Something is directing it to boot from the some internal UEFI boot! Help on this is much appreciated.  I just want to boot to the repair option so I can probably repair the BCD in the original boot drive.  Also, I downloaded the diagnostics package into a bootable USB and that boots up with no problem.  I ran all the diag and everything passed - so there is no problem with the hardware! Thanks in advance.

A:Re: Lenovo m83 not booting from noting

For future reference, there's a blue 'Start a Topic' button on the left side for starting new threads.

Just to be clear, you have a Tiny, and wish to install from a Windows install DVD to a new SSD?  You have a DVD drive attached to your Tiny?  IIs it a factory permanently attached drive?  Have you changed the boot order in the BIOS so that DVD drive is ahead of other drive?  You may need to change the Boot Mode in the BIOS, see this other thread.

Hi My Lenovo X200T suddenly stopped working yesterday  (after 10 year's!!!).  I was just doing something on Excel and it restarted of its own accord whilst I was working.  It booted up again and I started working again, but then it restarted like before.   Did it a couple more times, and then wouldn't boot at all.   So I opened up the machine and cleaned out the fan etc, reseated the RAM.  As you can see in this clip (https://youtu.be/nHHM569sI0w) it tries to start, fan turns for a bit, then turns off.  What you don't see in the clip is that the second time it does this, the fan then comes back on and stays on.  It sounds like the machine is working but nothing I'd happening on the screen.  I've tried taking the battery out, holding power button for 30s then plugging in AC and it makes no difference. Any ideas would be gladly appreciated.

The disk read/write light quickly flashes about every three seconds. Absolutely nothing happens on screen so I cannot access the BIOS. I got it cheap due to a bad hard drive and used an old Windows 7 drive instead. I upgraded it to Windows 10 (x64, wiping the 32-bit 7) and it worked fine. I do not know what changed between then and now but now it will not boot. I have already attempted booting without the hard drive to the same effect.Thank you.

I am having issues with booting my laptop. The other day I tried turned on my laptop and it came up with a message which disappeared before I could check what it said. It then put me in a loop with restarting my laptop with options and now it isn't booting at all. Each time I try and power on the machine the screen goes black and the lights on the front to show power and charge light up. Then after about 20 or so seconds, it shuts down. I also tried pressing the OneKey Recovery button on the left side of the device however this did the same as the power button. I stripped down the laptop to check the CMOS battery to see if that was the issue but the battery was healthy and showing 3.19 volts. What else could this issue be?  Thanks, James W.

The last thing I did on my laptop is shut it down like how I normally use itWhen I tried to boot my laptop day after that, I can't seem to boot it.Clue:1) Power button doesn't boot pc2) After plugging in the charger, battery light turns on ( White ) and blink, Lights on for 3-4 seconds, blink once and repeat3) Accidentally pressed alt+f4 managed to boot up the pc ( Into booting screen ) for 1-2 seconds, the pc shut off right away ( almost as if power is suddenly cut ) 4) Tried removing the battery, hold power button for 30 seconds and plug in and boot, doesn't work5) Tried to boot without battery, plugged in the charger, no indicator light, ( Power / Battery light), cant boot as well This issue is very weird and unusual for me, hope some expert can help me or guide me with that.

My Computer data:Lenovo G50- 45Win 8 already being installedMy problem:Hey dudes,I wanted to start my PC as always but instead of starting my GUI, windows just showed me the message that "Automatically reperation is being prepared". I used to wait but after hours the computer stayed the same. I decided to use the "onekey recovery" but instead of recovering, the computer just showed me the lenovo sign and used to load. The same procedure, I used to wait hours, but nothing changed. After that I prepared an USB device and set win 10 (64) on it and wanted to let him boot from my device. After having a lot of problems, I found a page on the internet telling me to change to "legacy" mode and to disable secure boot. Well, done that and enter with "Fn and F12" the boot menu. Selected my USB device and he is really showing me a Win 10 logo. But, and thats my problem he isnt doing anything else. He is just showing me a loading circle with a big blue Win 10 logo. I dont know what I should do next. Any Ideas around here? I've heard that a Hardware issue could be possible, isn't it? While booting, I pushed different Keys and heard one single, loud Beeping. Any ideas what I could do guys?Would be really glad to hear from you  - Greetings

I bought this system just 3 days ago though not brand new but it was working very perfectly,   the system is running windows 8 pro n, I connected the system to the Internet and I was asked to update windows which I accepted and after the update,  (some failed while some were successful)  the system began misbehaving,  the screen goes black while the system is on,  I had to switch off the system and power it on again,  the screen comes up but after some time goes black again,  I tried some tricks I read online which seemed to work but later, the problem continued and the tricks stopped working, somehow,  I managed to get the system running normally again n I thought maybe the failed updates is the problem,  I selected the windows updates that failed n try to update again,  the screen went black again,   I turned the system off and tried to turn it on again but this time, it refuse to power on,  when I hit the power on button,  the power on light comes up and the fan tries to run and goes silent,  the power on light goes off immediately,  tried n tried n the same thing keep happening,  hitting the power on button, the power on light comes up and after some seconds,  goes off again,  I took the system to an engineer, he said the system has board problem,  I don't know how true is this Cus the system was running very  well,  all this problems started right after the wind... So, I have a Lenovo Thinkpad Z61T 9660CTO which I bought in 2007. It has served me well. Yesterday, it was working perfectly, albeit with some exxtra high heating at the bottom, close to 60-70 degrees Celcius. Then , I wanted to put in a new SSD into it. So, I took out the old HDD and then connected it, and the other SSD via USB casing to another computer running a disk cloning software. Tried it did not work. Now, I put back the old HDD into the Thinkpad, it does not start up again at all. Even the first screen which says "Thinkpad" press Blue button for recovery" does not come up now. Hard drive is not it, since the screen does not switch on at ALL. If it was HDD failure, it would say something like HDD not detected. But in this case, it does not even show the initial Thinkpad screen. So, this may be a loose connection somewhere (even though I did not remove the casing at all while removing the HDD) Both times, I removed and reattached the HDD, with the power cable removed from the Thinkpad, but, the battery was still inside the chassis. Short circuit? Bad! Someone help.

A:Lenovo Z61T not booting

In case its not clear, when I press the power button, I do not arrive at the press Del to enter BIOS screen at all. No THINKPAD screen. Just black screen and no HDD activity

My Lenovo B590 was working fine yesterday, today suddenly I can't make it boot up. I have recorded a video that demonstrates the behaviour of the Laptop on Power On:https://youtu.be/T9IcxsIgRcE It remains in an endless loop of powering up for a sec, making some click-sound and turning off immediately. Longpress power button ends the loop. AC cable is connected, battery is inserted. Things I tried that didn't solve the issue:Power On only with AC cable (normally and with 20 sec long Power press)Power On only with battery (normally and with 20 sec long Power press)Removing both RAM and trying it with one each in each of both RAM slotsProbably an issue with the motherboard? Anything else I could try?

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

Sorry to hear of the problem you are experiencing.  I would try removing the optical drive and then try powering the laptop up.  If that doesn't work then remove the hard drive and power up.  Since the click sounds mechanical in nature, that would lead me to suspect either one of those devices.  If the laptop powers up with a drive removed then suspect that drive as being faulty.

Your model's User Guide will explain how to remove those drives.  Here is a link to that manual for your reference.....

Hi All Sorry not sure about the exact configuration of my Lenovo Yoga 2 13 (59432164 or Type 80DM59432164)... Symptoms: System not booting any more: From the initial "Lenovo screen" dark screen not responding...Before that I had a very difficult and long boot with sometimes a "preparing the automatic repair" message...Must say regarding what I red that my harddrive may be faulty as I sometimes hear doggy sounds with VERY slow perfomance (at the time I could sill use it)...It is also possible that I have a virus/malware/rootkit on the system as my protection was also limited during the last months... (...) Unsuccessful attemps so far:Accessing the "BIOS" with "lenovo button""System recorery" option does not lead anywhere with computer "loading files" but going dead (dark screen) again...Not sure about the safe mode start procedure there, but initial try through "BIOS menu" lead to "windows boot Manager boot failed" message (after a "loading files" barre again).Trying to reload windows with a USB bootable device (WIN10 flashed on USB with rufus) and the appropriate change to my BIOS (with Lenovo tutorial) leads nowhere again (brief windows logo appearing on screen going dark very quickly and not responding...) From there I tried to load different freewares bootable on a USB device to analyse my harddrive SEATools... not working and leading anywhere... Any help please is very welcome
