Q: Differences Thinkpad Thunderbolt Dock Gen 2, Workstation Dock (170W) and Workstation Dock (230W)

Hello everyone, I recently bought a Thinkpad X1 Extreme and I am now locking for a suitable Thunderbolt 3 dock. Although I've read a lot of posts about various docks I am still a little consfused about which one to choose. It seems like the following ones would all work with the X1 Extreme:1. Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 135W:https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/accessories-and-monitors/docking/universal-cable-docks-thunderbolt/Thun...2. ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock (170W):https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/accessories-and-monitors/docking/universal-cable-docks-thunderbolt/Thun...3. ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock (230W):https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/accessories-and-monitors/top-tech/Thunderbolt-WS-230W-dock-US/p/40AN023... Please correct me if I am wrong but to me it seems as if the only difference between these docks is that the workstation ones come with two AC adapters each and a special Thunderbolt/Power cable to avoid using two different cables. Or are there any other technical differences? So if I am okay with a two cable solution couldn't I just use the Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 135W and connect it via Thunderbolt while at the same time use my 135W AC adapter to charge the laptop? Thanks a lot in advance.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, Can somebody please confim if the ThinkPad Workstation Dock 230W will power 2 x 2560x1440 monitors @ 60Hz? When I look at this link ThinkPad Workstation Dock 230W it onlyy talks about 3840x2160 and 1920x1200. I suspect if it is purely passing through 1 x 1.2 DisplayPort that it will indeed work but I see nothing to confirm this anywhere. Thank you in advance! Jonathan.

I used the Lenovo System Update (v5.07.0074) and was prompted to download and install (was listed as Critical Update) the Firmware to my Dock.  As always, I closed all applications and sat as the Firmware downloaded. I got the expected prompt to ensure I was plugged in. I then watched as the upgraded prompted me to install. Installation completed and everything appeared to be fine.  I powered down the thinkpad and disconnected. Worked from the living room, then went back to the dock. Connected, and noticed that before I connected the White light on the power button was illuminated. Shrugged, and pushed the power button. Nothing. I un-plugged the Dock, got a cup of coffee, returned and plugged it back in. Nothing. I then noticed that none of the pass-through power was working on the dock.  So, I unplugged it again.  Unplugged everything connected to it, and held the power button down for 15 seconds in an effort. All of this at the recommendation of Lenovo Support. Who, by the way, was very nice and well spoken. Nothing we did worked. I happened to have another Thunderbolt 3 cable in my bag, and no change. I powered up my new X1 Yoga, and connected the cable. No power. This wasn't passing power at all. I confirmed the Intel Thunderbolt app was running, and confirmed that Windows was not even detecting the Dock.  Lenovo is sending me a replacement. Dear community, I am running a Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock with my P72 and I am having a hard time to get some of my realtime USB devices to run properly: (1) 1080p Webcams: I tested 2 devices (Logitech C930e and Microsoft LifeCam Studio) and both provide an unstable video stream, which is regularly interrupted by distortions. A lower 720p stream with another device (Logitech C270) works fine, though. (2) Oculus Rift Headset and Oculus Sensor: Does not run at all or with bad tracking performance. Those devices require a stable USB 3.0 connection to function properly. All of those devices run perfectly when connected to my Thinkpad P72 diretly. So chances are, that the Dock is causing the problems, I have the Dock's latest drivers (v10011) and firmware (04-0E-83_Rev_0083) installed. Does the Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock actually support fast USB connections (such as high definition Webcams)? Or is it rather likely that my Dock and/or the Thunderbolt cable are damaged?  I have been working on this issue for many hours now. So any advice is greatly appreciated. Cheers, Robert

Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation DockEU/INA/VIE/ROKModel name: 40AN0230EULink (US version) I didn't find any decent pictures and or specs about this dock for the P series workstations, so here you are some pictures. It has a special combined cable, that allows to attach the powercable and the Thunderbolt cable in one. On the P1, P52, and P72, the sockets for the power adapter and the Thunderbolt are arranged the same way that the cable can plug in exactly. This is a simple and clever solution I think. The dock arrives with:230 W power adapter (which is for the P72 necessary, the P52 and P1 can use smaller ones), and I think is a simple pass-through from the dock to the laptop.65W power adapter - which is for powering the dock itself Downsides:The dock's cable is only 60 cm long, so there is not enough length to hide the dock (I think this is related to display data on Thunderbolt - can someone confirm?)And that the cable can be plugged in in one direction, so it will determine how the laptop and dock can be positioned relative to each otherConnections:USB: 5Thunderbolt: 2Audio: 1Network: 1Lock: 1List price is 392? in Belgium.

I received the ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock back in October. In fact, I got two: one for the home office and one for the work office. It came in a small but heavy package (yes, it has two power adapters inside: a 65W and a 230W one). As mobile workstations have a power requirement that is more than 100W - P1/X1X requires 135W, the P52 170W and the P72 230W - a single TB3 cable cannot carry power to the notebook. Hence the special double cable that comes with the dock. I know I read a lot of arguments on which is better - the mechanical dock or the cable dock.    I have been using both docks daily since I got them, and I gathered my thoughts into two articles.   The review has my opinion about the dock and how it functions. You will also find more pictures about the dock and cable in this article. The troubleshooting article has some issues I bumped into and some solutions for them. One issue in particular mechanical dock fans will love :-) The cable can dislodge easily, and while the dock functions because there is a Thunderbolt 3 connection, the power connection gets terminated and the notebook will use battery power. Read more about in my troubleshooting article.

HelloI've seen postings on Solidworks forum that there can be a conflikt between the Intel® HD Graphics 630 and the Quadro P2000 when running on extern monitor: https://forum.solidworks.com/thread/233873 "I have a Lenovo ThinkPad P1 with an Intel Xeon E-2176M and an NVIDIA Quadro P2000. The integrated graphics for the Xeon processor are Intel UHD P630, which does not appear to have official support from Solidworks. When connected to a second monitor, Solidworks crashes anytime I try to open or start a part because the second monitor uses the integrated graphics. The only work-around I have is to disable the Intel graphics drivers, but this is annoying and I feel like I shouldn't have to do this. The NVIDIA control panel setting is already telling Solidworks to use the P2000 card, but this doesn't seem to matter. All my drivers are up to date with what has been validated by Lenovo. Solidworks just doesn't like UHD P630. Does anyone know if support for UHD P630 is in the works?" Is it likely to be a problem on a Thinkpad P1 gen2 with an Quadro T2000 and Intel® HD Graphics 630 when running Solidworks on ekstern monitor on Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock - EU/INA/VIE/ROK? I ask becuse this will be a dealbraker for me if I buy the Thinkpad P1, as I normally always use external monitor at home when docked!

Has anyone seen any issues with the new Thunderbolt 3 Gen 2 Workstation Dock 40ANY230US and using the USB ports? Specifically what happens is when a user undocks and goes to a meeting and comes back, redocks and then they see USB not recognized or malfunctioned errors. They then have to restart in order to get the USB functionality back. Then as soon as they undock and redock it happens again.  So far I have almost been able to track it down to having a Jabra headset dongle plugged into the dock when this happens.  Wondering if anyone has experienced this or has a fix? Thanks!

Hello All.  I am new here. My company replaced my W540 (Windows 7 OS) Thinkpad with a P52 (Windows 10 OS) Thinkpad.  I have an external DisplayPort monitor and extend the desktop to it.  I have a USB printer.  I use both wired Ethernet, and wifi.  I have a wireless Logitech mouse.  I also have a set of Altec speakers.  The P52 no longer uses the sit on type of Dock, so I bought a Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock (230W).  I set everything up, with the external monitor connected to the Thunderbolt 3, along with the Ethernet, printer, speakers, and Logitech Unifying transceiver.  With everything connected, the P52 connected to the monitor just fine, and I extended the Desktop to it.  The P52 could not see the printer, the Ethernet, or the Logitech Unifying transceiver.  If I move these items to direct connection on the P52, they are all found right away. Today, I downloaded the latest software and drivers for the Thunderbolt 3, and then installed them.  I have the same results for the four peripherals.  Am I missing something?  My Windows 10 OS is the Enterprise Edition, version 1803.  The Dock lets me connect the monitor and the power with one cable, but I still need to plug in and out the other four items if I use them. Help Please... Thanks,Bunsen1

I have a P52 and a Lenovo Thunderbolt 3 Dock Workstation Gen2 On the dock I have 2 Dell U2415 connected via a DisplayPort cable and a microsoft wired keyboard. When I lock the computer, the monitors turn off after a few seconds. Usually any key press or mouse move wakes up the monitors so I can login to Windows 10. The problem I have is that since the last firmware update 3.1.64, the screens don't always wake up when I press a key. A workaround to nudge the screens to wake up is to switch off one monitor, then switch it back on when the other screen wakes up. Another workaround is to press the dock button which puts the computer to sleep, then wake it up after a few seconds. Clearly both workarounds are not ideal and I would like this problem fixed. Note that I had the same problem when I bought the dock with the original dock firmware 3.1.53 and the problem was solved when I upgraded to version 3.1.61.  I have tried installing firmware 3.1.61 as I had the files around but the installer will not let me downgrade. Is there a way to force a downgrade to version 3.1.61 or is there another way to fix this problem? Thanks

After the latest (almost mandatory according to alert) BIOS update of my P53 I cannot undock and redock without rebooting. The dock is recognized but the USB ports do not work after redock - the display does. It is the same on two different docks with newest and second newest dock firmware. First Lenvo support would not help at all - said it was a software problem - and now they after me complaining want to take the machine in for repair. I doubt it is a hardware problem but just a side effect after updating the BIOS. Anybody else with same problem and a solution? No way to get "real" qualified help from Lenovo on such an issue. It takes forever to reinstall and setup all software and tools on a workstation and just re-formatting and re-installing Windows (advice from support) with is not way to solve a problem induced by Lenovo in my mind. It is an expensive computer and expensive docking stations - but apparently no real support.

Hi guys, This morning System Update ran and installed a bunch of the newest March 2019 updates. The big one was the Intel Management Engine. After rebooting, when my Thunderbolt 3 Dock is plugged into my Lenovo P52 it freezes on the POST screen with the Lenovo logo. If i unplug the dock it boots fine, plug the dock in after the OS is booted, things work fine. Its just during the POST during secure boot. I tried reflashing the Thunderbolt firmware to the 11/2018 to no avail, reflashed the dock with version 3.x of the firmware (latest) no difference, downgraded the firmware on the dock, changed the boot support methods for thunderbolt, so on and so forth.  Its strange it doesn't get past the logo screen it just sits. Is there another version of the Thunderbolt firmware i should be using besides the November 2018? I really would not like to peel back all the different updates that it updatedAnybody got any ideas? Is there a way to find what the cause is? Honestly i can unplug the dock when i reboot and plug it back in within a second after the POST screen and things work as normal. Its just a pain.

Thinkpad P51 with dual (DVI and HDMI) monitors connected to Dock.  P51 wakes fine and one monitor (DVI) sees signal (awakes from sleep mode), the other sees no signal.  Regardless no video information is sent to either monitor - the DVI monitor is awake but black screen - the HDMI remains asleep. Removing and reinserting connectors has no impact. Cycling P51 into and out of sleep mode makes no difference. Removing P51 from dock and all functions correctly. USB (dongle) mouse and keyboard functions also loses functionality when P51 is docked.  They awaken the P51 but do not function correctly. removal of Laptop from dock and they function fine along with local monitor.  Re-install into dock and mouse/keyboard are inoperable. Only a hard shutdown and reboot via the dock switch (laptop remaining docked) returns the system to correct function.  All is normal and functioning.  Both monitors are immediately recognized, USB mouse & keyboard fully functional. When plugged in: Monitors set to sleep in 10 and PC in 30mins.  Short sleep (50-90mins) and system awakens correctly - overnight sleep (8-10hrs) and this happens every time.   Latest Dock FW/drivers is installed.   System and dock brand new - just arrived last week.

Hi, Do you know if the Thinkpad Workstation Dock is compatible with a Wacom Cintiq? I have to reset the resolution on the Cintiq everytime I restart, power on/off my laptop. I am pretty sure that it is the dock because after connecting the Cintiq tablet direcly to the laptop (fia an HDMI adapter) I have no issues with resolution reset. Something is happening in the dock so I wondered if anyone know if the dock is supposed to work perfectly with the Wacom tablet. I talked to a lady on the phone and she said that the dock is not compatible with the Cintiq but I have a hard time believing that since the ThinkPad is used by graphics people. It is the first time for me and Lenovo. I have always had Dell workstations.  Also, I could not find a technical support email address. Could you provide one if you have used it in the past? Thank you!

Hello All, We have several P50 notebooks in our office and two of them are having an issue with the docking station.  After the User's disconnect from the docks and then reconnect the P50 powers down.  It doesn't happen immediately after reconnecting to the dock - just after it sits for a while.  Almost like it goes into hibernation. . . ? Is there a setting that I can change to prevent this from happening? Thanks in advance for your help!

According to here: https://support.lenovo.com/ca/en/solutions/pd029622#workstation%20Dock It says number of monitors: 5 - any combination - one of those is the mini Display Port with some text saying "(selectable while docked)". I'm finding that when I have a monitor plugged into the Displayport of the dock and the mini Displayport of the laptop, only the mini monitor shows. If I remove the mini Displayport cable, the other monitor gets used.  How do I get these to work at the same time?

I have an old ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 that was purchased back in 2011. Would that still be compatiable with the current generation of thinkpad laptops? What about newer generations of 4K monitors? Thanks

Information to help anyone with a workstation dock ... Lenovo do not well advertise that firmware updates for the workstation dock exist. Eg. https://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/documents/acc100247 I found this by chance and most of my problems have gone away.  At boot up, or if my external screen blanked it usually took a screen power off/on cycle to get Windows to recognise it again. And .... Lenovo Companion / System Update do NOT detect the dock so you do NOT get offered new firmware updates.  Are you listening, Lenovo ??

Hi.

I think that your suggestion is very valid for the Lenovo Companion tool.

"Enable the Lenovo Companion Tool to also find updates for the Lenovo docks firmware".

There is a way to post some feedback to the Lenovo Companion team. The tool give you this link when you press the feedback button.

The P50 sits on the dock and I boot up by using the power switch on the dock. A week ago the P50 would not boot from the dock. Neither monitor lights up. If I take it off the dock the P50  will boot up. If I put onto the dock while booting both monitors light up. Why are the monitors not lighting up when using the power through the dock. This all started inthe last week. I have been booting this way for over a year with no issues until a week ago.

Hi Everyone, Having an issue I have 2 Dell u2414h and an Asus 28" VG278H looking to have all 3 connected to the dock but seems as though the workstation dock only supports a single DP 1.2 connection even though it has two and the thunderbolt port is non existant on the dock.  I'm looking to connect all 3 of my monitors to this dock any guidence on how I can go about this? the two dells have mini display port, Display port and HDMI the Asus has DVI, VGA and HDMI I tired to daisy chain the Dells but the screen just blinks on and off with the display. Can I use the thunderbolt 3 connection somehow? I wouldnt be oppesed to use a EGPU but I have not read anyone that has even tried an EGPU enclosure on the P50. Any help would be appriciated I've flashed the dock and p50 to the newest BIOS and updated all the drivers for the M2000m quadro as well.

A:3 displays with P50 and Workstation Dock

The dock is only limited in a single DP 1.2 bandwidth (there is a 'branching device' in nVidia topology), so it can drive 3 1080p monitors (2x digital + 1 VGA). Can get USB-C / Thunderbolt 3 => DisplayPort adapters to connect more monitors (e.g. http://www.amazon.com/VisionTek-USB-Type-DisplayPort-Adapter/dp/B0157RVTDW , although mine is yet to arrive).  There should be many more of these in 3-6 months, even Thunderbolt 3->Dual DisplayPort (each up to 4K @ 60Hz). Right now, however, selection is quite limited and Dell TB15 dock was reported to have issues with P50/P70. Perhaps resolved with the Thunderbolt software update already.
