IE9: Changing the default download option from 'save' to 'save as'

Q: IE9: Changing the default download option from 'save' to 'save as'

While I have sent feedback into Microsoft, I thought I might post here aswell.
In IE9 when you click a download, a pop-up from the bottom asks 'Do you want to open or save file.xxx from x.com' then gives you the option to 'Open' 'Save' or 'Cancel'
During testing, we found that users would just click 'Save' then not know where the file they downloaded went. After explaining that it was in the downloads, they complained that previously they just chose where to save the file and it saved there. Now they
have to open downloads and copy paste to the location.
We could teach the users to always drop down and select 'Save as' but I can tell you it would be a lot easier if there was a group policy, or a default we can change so the default was 'Save as'
Other than that, I have no complaints :D.

Preferred Solution: IE9: Changing the default download option from 'save' to 'save as'

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I always like saving screen shots (or whatever) as *.jpg. Is there a quick easy way to change it so when you click 'Save As' it defaults to *.jpg instead of *.bmp? i know it's a quick little click of the mouse to switch it to jpg, but I was just wondering if it was possible so I wouldn't have to do that every time...

A:changing ms paints default save format

hello

when you are doing your save as and you have the opyion to name the file / right under it there is a box that tell you what format you are saving it in / now if you click the little arrow next to it you will get a number of formates that it can be save in

just select (jpg) then save

it will then be save as a (jpg)

let us know if this works for you

I have a new HP Gaming laptop running Windows 10 which has a separate flash drive (labelled as Drive C) and the main hard drive labelled as Drive D. Windows and all pre-installed programmes are loaded on the Flash drive, but this is already running out of space so I would like to save future programmes and apps to the Hard Drive (D).  In Settings>System>Storage> I only get the option to change save location for Documents, Music, Pictures etc, but the location for saving New Apps is greyed out and set to C (Flash drive) by default. How can I change this please and keep main windows boot programme on the Flash drive which works really well for a fast PC start up. Thanks

This should be an easy one - I'm just a newbie.

How can the "default" save location be set for files?

Background: The default location was set to a network drive which I dont use.

I tried to change it to my frequently used network drive but it doesn't seem quite right. Not sure of the "bigger picture".

Here's what I did...

Left-clicked START menu.

Right clicked on Properties of Top Right Corner default.

Changed the properties on the "General" and "Location" tabs to point to the folder I'd to be the default.

On one of my mapped drives, the folder is no longer displayed, however and the mapped drive that goes directly to it, it appears in the same location.

I'm just not sure what happened when I made these changes. I had no intention of "moving" the folder.

What does this feature actually do?

Hello all!

I was always wondering,

Is there some way that I can change the default save location of things? For instance.. Games... Virtual machines.. I want JUST documents to be in documents rather then a bunch of BS stuff. If I make a folder in documents like "BS Folder" and put everything I don't want in there then it confuses the software.

Is there anyway I can change something or work around it so when I click Documents in the start menu a select folder pops up that is full of stuff I want it to be full of.

Hopefully that makes sense..

As you can see in the photo.. I want stuff like that out of my Documents and somewhere else.

Thanks!

A:Changing the default save location of things from Documents

It sounds to me like you are talking about the Documents library and that you have folders "included" in this library that you do not want to be included anymore. Is this correct?

Hi folks, got a question re: Excel 2010, running on win7 Pro 32-bit (it's not the machine in my stats).

I looked up tutorials to change the default save folder location for MS Office, and pretty much all of them reference MS Word 2010. Like for example the one in this forum, MS Office Word : Set Default Save Location -- which works fine when I try it, no problem with Word 2010. However, Excel 2010 is being a **** and refuses to following spec.

Consider:
When I click on File -> Options, then navigate to the "Save" tab, it displays a screen similar to the equivalent one in Word... except that the "Browse" button to change the folders is missing.

No big deal, plus the default file location is already pointing to my user folder: that's fine. However, when I go to save or save-as, this is what pops up:

Yea-- no. Why is Excel showing libraries? I don't want to use libraries. I don't want to see libraries. I've used the registry hack from this forum to remove libraries from showing up in the left pane of Explorer.

How do I get Excel to use my documents folder as the default?

Is there any way to set the default save location folder for downloads in IE8 to the last folder that the same file type was saved in? It makes no sense to default to a single folder and have to browse through to the desired folder for every single download, so I assume there has to be an option somewhere.

A:Setting default save location to last save folder

Limited choice here. Pictures (right click, save picture as) will save to My Pictures. Else, right click save will save to the last folder used.

No other option by file type.

A:Can't save download anda save

Hi, Let's try something- a small download that will help us see if there is any malware running.

If you have any other browser, than Internet Explorer, try using those. Firefox, or other browsers should allow downloading files by right clicking them, and select "Save Target As" (or very similar) then, you have to tell where to save the file TO on your hard drive...for this one, select the "Desktop" as the location to Save In.

If all you have is IE 6 or 7, use that.

go to Click here to download HJTsetup.exe
Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then save the log and then the log will open in Notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hi all

Just a stupid little problem with W7 I noticed which is VERY confusing but simple to fix.

I changed via the dialog the TEXT SIZE via the screen resolution in the control panel to CUSTOM SIZE.

With one of the newer "Cinema" or Very Wide screen (1680 X 900) displays after I'd increased the text size to over 160 % I didn't get the possibility to SAVE any documents any more via the SAVE AS button. The SAVE dialog would appear but the SAVE button was missing.

The effect was noticed in Office 2007 (all programs) Notepad etc etc.

Seems to be a Windows fault as this should not be allowed to happen.

on more traditional "Squarer" type monitors -- no problem.

I couldn't find the answer by googling but a bit of "trial and Error" fixed the problem.

The choice that comes up is .bmp, and I'm saving all these as .jpegs, so I have to drop down the list, etc. Is there a way to get it to come up with .jpeg as the first choice? I noticed that of the 105 that I've done so far, twice the Save As box opened with JPEG as the choice, so I'm assuming I did something to cause that. Any help would be appreciated.

Is the Form a .PDF file? If so, there may be password security on it from the sender that will not allow you to copy the file. You would need to know the password to unlock it.
This shouldn't be a problem with a Word document. Make sure your USB Flash Drive is not set to Read Only mode. Try saving your document to another location.

Hi,

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

A:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

Hi,
As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?
Thanks!

I do not know how it's done, but it is possible to put security on a Word document so it can only be read on your monitor. You can't edit it, print it, or save it with another name - all you can do is open and read it. Where did your customer get this file? I hope I'm in right forum. Apologies if not. and this post can be moved to a proper spot if need be. Recently I have managed to change the Windows 10 user profile folder. The name now matches the user name. And everything seems to be working fine. I used AVG TuneUp to get rid of errors in registry and fix broken shortcuts.

A few days ago I've installed YTD downloader. But, there is an issue - the program will not allow me to save downloads into any other location than the desktop. On my PC, the desktop folder I have managed to re-locate to a different partition on my drive using the Location tab for that type of folder. I can manage to hack Windows registry so YTD will save files to a location of my choice, but as I say, I cannot change to the desired save location from within YTD.

Can someone please opine a solution that might fix the YTD save function? Thanks. Rich

P.S. Could this be a permissions issue? YTD works on other user accounts on my PC.

Any solution?. Kindly reply.

hi iv been looking on the internet on how to install a new video card for my 865G chipset, which has a built in video card (BOO, HISS, GET OUT OF MY COMPUTER!!!) and iv seen that i have to disable the built in card in the bios setup, so i do that, but when i press F10 to save, it just beeps, then when i go to the actual menu option to save, it is grayed out, and next to the menu option of saving it says diasbled, so could someone please help me and tell me how to enable saving?

A:Option to save bios settings is grayed out, HELP PLEASE!!!

Whats the make and model of the computer. Same computers have a jumper that needs to be changed to allow changes to the BIOS. Or does your BIOS ask for a password when you access it?

FYI, some boards will automatically disable the onboard graphics when you add in a separate video card and connect the monitor to it.

Is there any way to change the default "Save As" folder when you right click an image in Windows Vista? It drives my husband nuts to have to keep navigating to the folder he wants to save something in.
