Compaq R4000: charge light flicker every 7 seconds

Q: Compaq R4000: charge light flicker every 7 seconds

Hello people...>!

I think I had been trying to fix this laptop for the last few months but was really stil not finding the root of the problem. Basically i had a problem with being able to charge my laptop when on or off. When it is on, the charge light will keep blinking but when it is off, it will flicker every 7 seconds. I had remove the battery and tried with the ac only and it does the same thing.

I also had replaced the dc jack and problem was not solved. My only guess is the ac adapter but I wonder if anyone have had the same issue like I am and hoping it was the ac adapter. I really do not want to buy an ac adapter and later on to find that it was not it but the motherboard so it will be a waste of money.'

Any suggestions or inputs will be appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

You are definitely right...! Finally, it works again after I bought a new AC adapter. So the real culprit is the AC adapter. Anyone who has the same symptoms as I did, please make sure you suspect your ac adapter first before tearing apart your laptop. Good luck!!

Hello tech guys out there!
I am having this issue with my Compaq Presario R4000. Whenever I have been using my laptop for more than 15-20 min, the ac adapter will not charge propertly. I will keep blinking on the power light as well as the start buttton light. But if I were to turn off the laptop and plug in the AC, it will charge normally again. Any idea what would be causing this issue?

I am thinking it could be motherboard issue that controls the charging but it is really wierd. Anyone had this issue before, please share with me how you resolve it? It might also be the DC port.....

Any comments or suggestion would be appreciated.

BTW, I am also looking for 2gb ram PC 2700 for my laptop. If anyone has these for sale, please email me at [email protected]

Thanks!

I have a Gateway w730-k8x, running XP. I ran the battery down, then plugged in power cord, but got no action. Took battery out, still wouldn't turn on with power plugged in. Waited a day (traveling). Tried again and am getting only 5 seconds of flashing battery charge light then nothing. Again with battery out, no response. Any ideas?

I have the above laptop and recently I had problem with it being the fact that it will not boot properly. Each time the power button is pressed, it will only try to boot for less than a second and it will shut off again. I have tested the ac adapter and it appears fine. A few of my friends said it could be a motherboard problem. Has anyone had this issue before? I was wondering if anyone knows exactly which part of the motherboard that is faulty so that I do not have to replace the whole motherboard.

Any suggestion or inputs in resolving this will be greatly appreciated.
By the way, everything is standard, has not been modified or changed.

Thanks!!

I use the laptop everything was ok before then suddenly it start beeping and all kind off window opens up by it self and I could not do anything just hard boot to stop the noise. Sometimes comes back normal for a while after restart, but after a while it goes back to same beeping and opening windows again. At that time nothing works, no mouse or keyboard. I have to shot it off with the main power button. I have seen this on the keyboard with a spills off a liquid, but in my case there was no spillage done. I even tried another keyboard which I know is good with the same result. I think it must be a short somewhere on the motherboard or a chip is giving up.

A:Compaq R4000 keyboard problem

Remove the keyboard

http://www.bixnet.com/meinguforcor.html
Scroll down the page a bit

Or just download the service manual
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00364919.pdf
Section 5.8

Reconnect the connections to the keyboard (By the way do you mean that you already replaced this keyboard?)
Also turn the removed keyboard over and tap the bottom to allow any debri to fall out. You can use a vacuum cleaner, but you need to be careful not to suck up the keys!

Hi.
I have a Compaq Presario R4000. It's around 6 years old. Until recently it has worked as well as any other laptop with the usual software problems. Yesterday I tried to switch it on and all I see is the charge light flashes once for around 1 second then goes out. No response at all from the machine. Tried running it without the battery but still no response. A friend told me that it may be the battery and that some laptops won't run without a battery inserted.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Cheers.

A:Compaq Presario R4000 won't turn on

The motherboard is probably fried, after 6 years. Also, the CPU cooling heatsink/fan could be bad or the thermal paste or pads could be burned. If the battery is the original it is in long need of replacing...

"that some laptops won't run without a battery inserted"

Not exactly true. If the AC adapter circuits are faulty, maybe yes. Otherwise, it is not true. If a battery shorts, it can keep a laptop from powering up

The problem is any key I press I get weird thing happening like four or five letter show up on one stroke ( I do not type that fast) and it start piping immediately ( same sound like the keyboard is faulty} and then all kind a windows start popping up and I can stop it only hard reboot, but soon I touch any key same thin happens again. I have already tried another keyboard same result. Open the laptop and look for a spill, but there is none. Clean the ribbon plug and surrounding area with Flux Clean and after putting the laptop together it actually worked for a week with no problems at all, but now the problem is back same as before.

Could there be chip with a cold solder I maybe disturbed with the cleaning and it worked for that short time?

hello,
I have a compaq r4000 laptop giving me some trouble. the computer was running just fine a couple days ago but when i turned it on today, the computer gave me a beep code of 3 beeps and a blank screen. I'm not exactly sure what happened but i think it could be a video issue. i tested the hard drive, power supply, and memory, all seem to be working just fine. I'm hoping it's not a motherboard issue but if that's the case than i will change it but I need to know for sure. any help would be much appreciated.

Try removing both Power Sources (Charger and Battery)
Disperse all internal voltage, by holding the ON button down, for 30secs
Locate and remove the Ram card(s)
Blow out any dust
Re-insert the Ram card(s) securely
Plug the charger back in (Battery may remain out, whilst testing)
Turn on

Did it work?
If so, turn off, and refit battery, and hopefully reply back with the good news

Hello... My Presario R4000 (3200+) laptop screen went darkens. It can still boot into XP but its very very dark; one must look very carefully at the screen inorder
notice the screen is on. I tried ajusting the screen brightnest with Fn-f8 but it doesn't work.

Does anyone have any ideas of what could cause this or what the fix can be?

A:Compaq R4000 screen darkens

Hi doodoo8888 and welcome to TSG,

It sounds like your backlight is no longer working. Possible causes are ...

1) The fluorescent lamp (or lamps) for the backlight has failed or is cracked.

2) The high voltage DC-AC inverter circuit used to drive the fluorescent lamp(s) has failed.

3) The wiring feeding DC power to the inverter or between the inverter and the fluorescent lamp(s) has become disconnected.

FIxing any of these problems is not a do-it-yourself project unless you are very comfortable with taking apart the insides of your laptop and putting it back together correctly.

Over the past few weeks I've been getting intermittent BSOD crashes with "unexpected IRQ" or "page fault in non-page area" errors. These were often accompanied on reboot by POST beep code 1-3-4-3, error in first 512K of base memory.

Memtest86 fails after a few passes with the unexpected IRQ error.

Replaced both internal and external OEM memory modules (Hynix 512MB PC2700S DDR 333MHz) with two PNY 1GB PC2700 333MHz modules.

Things are worse now. Getting POST beep codes of 1-4-1-1 and 3 and 2, all having to do with memory.

Questions: 1) What is the significance of "S" in PC2700S? 2) Are the internal and external modules the only memory to worry about, or is there some other motherboard memory that could be causing this? 3) Suggestions?

Thank you.

I have a Compaq Presario R4000 notebook computer. I have had it for about two years and so far have not had any problems with it. Last night I was using Adobe Encore when the program froze, I shut off my computer manually (by holding down the power button) and whenever I try to turn it on now I am unable to.

I am greeted with the error message "We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this."

I am given the options of starting in Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, or Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent setting that worked).

None of these options yield any success, so I turned to the Operations Recovery disc.

When I attempt to run the Microsoft Windows XP Recover Console it does not seem to work, and I am greeted by a black screen with "Microsoft Windows XP Recover Console. The Recovery COnsole Provides system repair and recover functionality. Type EXIT to quit the Recovery Console and restart the computer." There is a line with the prompt "C:\>", when I type "exit", it quits the console and I return to the blue screen, typing exit seems to be my only option at this screen as nothing else happens.

If I take the route through which I would reinstall Windows XP, it tells me that I have a partition (Partition1) with 95700 MB free (roughly the size of my harddrive). However, to go this route... Read more

This just started happening recently. The power indicator light (near the power plug) does not turn on and Windows does not recognize when the adapter is plugged in; the power icon and cusomized power saving "on battery" behavior reflect that. HOWEVER, the battery does charge. The "lightning bolt" charging light on the front between HDD and system power lights comes on and the battery recharges if not at 100%. Any thoughts on how to troubleshoot this? Is it more likely a Windows or hardware problem? The BIOS does not have the power adapter test mentioned here, and I could not find the software download for the Smart Adapter functionality (this laptop was installed with clean, non-OEM OS, so any OEM software had to be added manually). Thanks in advance,Kyle

Ready for a head-scratcher?

After installing UxStyle (allows XP users to use 3rd-party themes) my laptop shows the BIOS screen but no longer boots Windows. I just get the BSOD. To make things worse, when I tried to reinstall Windows as a last resort it hangs on the "Setup is Starting Windows" screen. I even tried booting into a Ubuntu LiveCD. It loads the Linux kernel but then just shows a blinking cursor in the upper left-hand corner and is unresponsive. Here's what I've done so far to save my laptop and the results:

* Ran HD test in BIOS - both the short and long test report "PASSED"
* Swapped out the HD for another that I know works - same problem
* Removed both internal and external memory modules individually and swapped the two around - same problem
* Ran Memtest - "No Errors"
* Swapped out optical drive - same problem
* Removed AC adapter and battery, held down power button for 2 mins - same problem
* Reset CMOS by removing internal battery for 15 mins - same problem
* Tried Windows reinstall using every HAL configuration available on my system - still hangs
* Disassembled case and blew out dust - you guessed it, same problem

I'm assuming that it's a hardware problem since it hangs at the same point in the boot process. I guess I'm shocked that a seemingly harmless Windows patch could cause a hardware failure like this.

I'm utterly baffled. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When I'm logged in I look at the battery icon and click it and says nothing about a battery not being detected and says 100% fully charged I removed my battery charger and my computer died. I started it back up with the battery charger, it still said the same thing and I continued onto logging in. This is a real "trip" to describe! There is a persistent flicker/flash of all screens which when in the "off" canot type, or us the mouse or keyboard input. 2-3 second intervals - type/no type. And nothing stops or halts it.

EX. The main app CHROME screen + all popups screens, etc. flicker/flash at the boarders, and screen control box (top right every screen where the X red app close box shows). The box/boarders flicker off/on every few seconds - like the red X background color flashes back grey; then back to red;...). I cannot type on omnibar, search bars, make the cursor work... total lose of screen control and keyboard input while the flicker/flash occurs in the washout color state. Then capability comes back and can type a few characters, then capability stops. This keeps up : off/on state 2-3 second in sequence continually. Nothing but going back to a random System Restore Point circumvents this problem. That regresses all work after the old restore point. And not always the same one works either?????

Does not seem to occur in Safe Mode, but being a reduced system state, maybe it's just more dormant.
I even went as far as killing all processes with Task Manager until only CRSS and task manager and login resident processes in system. A unknown to HP process called ReStart.exe flashed in and out of the TM process list with every flicker. It is described as "Restart for HP" in the description field on the TM process screen. So, I have a Compaq presario CQ-60 running windows 7 home premium. I have been troubled by monitor flicker. its seemingly random. happens in pulses. almost like a block or grid flashes up on the screen, and it disappears. pretty frequently. in irregular places at irregular times. like I said, frequent but very random. I have a second monitor connected to the laptop's output, my dell HD 22 from my desk top and there is no flicker seen on that screen. I have opened the laptop and checked for loose, damaged wiring. it all inspects OK. ( I am pretty good with electronics) I am at the point where i am beginning to suspect my inverter circuitry is to blame because the monitor output does not flicker, so that should tend to isolate the trouble to the laptop's display circuitry. right? I figured since the display is bright, not discolored at all, and the inverter is supposedly hi voltage circuitry it just tends to seem logical that it could cause this random flickering because of the voltage or whatever. I tested the ram chips one at a time and they are OK. I also tested the HD with the segate downloadable diagnostics tool, and it passed the SMART test. anyways, anyone care to offer an opinion or question before I order a $15 dollar inverter chip? the computer has 2GB ram, intel celeron processor 900 @ 2.2ghz graphics is powered by Mobile Intel 45 Express Chipset Family (WDDM1.1) driver v. 8.15.10.1749any opin... Hi,

I've got a Presario 2200 whose screen flickers black and white horizontal lines at some of the angles its positioned at. Usually if I open it up at a big angle it's fine, but as I go more acute the flickering starts. At some point the screen even goes black.

I tried opening it up to see if I could identify anything wrong with the connection but it seems fine. I even disconnected and reconnected the display cord. Still flickers.

Anyone have an idea of what I could do to fix this flickering?

One more thing, which is more my second priority... the wireless networking in the laptop doesn't work. The blue wireless button won't even turn on. What should I check? The wireless antenna cables in the Mini PCI communications board seem fine..

MY laptop is a HP Touchscreen. It is only 1 year old. The battery warranty just ran out. The red light constantly blinks, and the battery hold no charge, and will no longer charge. This was after it was always getting very warm. I had to purchase a stand that had three fans in it so that it would not shut itself down every hour. Since then it seemed to be working ok, however now I am getting emails to pay 120.00 for an extended plan, a battery costs 98.00 , and a new laptop with the same and better features only costs 249.00. Why have you made disposable laptops?? It is cheaper to buy a brand new one and use the new battery, and have an entire extra laptop. My Compaq overheated and I replaced the hard drive. That laptop was only 2 years old, and now it will not turn on either. I am out two laptops. I am not sure if my battery is on the recall however it seems to be fitting the bill. I have a Compaq Presario V6000 that's worked (relatively) fine for several years. Over the last couple of days, when I plug the power cord into the laptop, it doesn't act like it's plugged in (runs off of battery, and the charge light doesn't come on.) If I move the cord around and get it in just the right place and hold it without moving, I can get it to charge. I tried a different power cord and it still doesn't work. Has anyone ever had this issue with a V6000 or similar system?

I talked to someone that said on some laptops the power plug comes unsoldered from the motherboard after repeated use. If this is the issue, it's probably not worth having someone else fix it vs buying a new system (quote was ~$200-400 to repair). I'm willing to give it a try under the "it can't get any worse" theory. Have you ever opened up a V6000 - any tricks needed?

Thanks in advance.

I acquired a used HP Compaq 8701w laptop a few months ago.
I recently noticed that the battery charge light doesn't come on. (I didn't notice this initially because I set it up as a desktop with exterior monitors and never unplugged it from the dock...I wanted to use it in my bedroom last night so I became aware of the issue then)

I ran a check on the battery and it tested good.

The software shows charge is 100% but when I unplug the laptop from the docking station it will not run off battery.

I tested the battery with HP Battery Check and it tested good.

I tried the following solution I found on HP forums:
shut down
pull battery
hold power for 30 seconds
plug into AC
power back up
re-insert battery
Didn't Work.
I tried an uninstall of the ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery driver with no change at reboot.

I also tried using a different battery that I know to be discharged and the software shows it at 0% so it's not my software incorrectly reading a full battery.

The charge indicator did not come on for either battery I put in.

Laptop runs fine off AC power plug

A:HP Laptop won't run off battery/charge light not coming on

Hi kannmoore and welcome to TSG.

It looks like there's a problem inside the laptop. To check try charging a known working battery overnight.

If the above doesn't work can you power the laptop directly without using the Docking Station ? If you can try that as well to see if it makes any difference.

Hi guys, my laptop fell like 3 feet off the bed and now won't charge or turn on. When I plug in the ac cord, the charge light rapidly blinks. It is a white color led blinking. What does this mean as the manual only has white, amber, and blinking amber options. I tried just using the battery and it does not turn on. Also tried the hard reset where you hold the power button for 30sec to 1min. Any solutions would be appreciated. Thanks!

A:Hp pavilion dv6 charge light blinking with no power

Hello,

Thank you for the information. For the battery light blinking repeatedly, I have included the following document 'Computer Does Not Start and the LEDs Blink or the Computer Beeps'. Once you do have the link open, click on Battery power LED blinks' and follow through the steps.

The second document that I have included is 'Computer Does not Start (Windows 7, Vista, XP)'. Once you do have the document open, please click on the symptom that your computer is having, and follow through the steps in order.

The last document that I have included is, 'Battery Does not Power Notebook or Hold a Charge'. This will take you through the different options of testing the battery, power supply, and system board.

Please let me know if you are able to turn the notebook on after this, thank you.

Hi,This seems like a very odd situation. When my Z60m is plugged in, my battery shows a 100% charge down next to the system tray. At the same time, I'm getting the flashing orange battery LED, which generally should only show when the battery is about to run out of charge. When I try running on the battery by unplugging the AC adapter, the laptop loses power immediately.I have tried performing a battery reset from the 'battery maintenance' page, but that didn't work; as soon as the process began, the computer powered off, and didn't remember what it was doing when it started up again.Any ideas? Thanks.Greg

The battery won't charge unless the plugged in cable is held at an angle. This started after the warranty had expired. I already purchased a new charger and it didn't solve the problem.

Hello,My *dead* laptop isn't charging. When I plug the laptop adapter charger in, the white light next to the charging port doesn't light up which it usually does when it is charging. I've checked the battery by plugging it in without the battery and it still doesn't work so I guess the battery is fine. I've checked for kinks in the wire and there are none. I've changed the fuse in the plug and it still doesn't work. I've plugged it in the wall sockets instead of the extension lead I usually use and it didn't work. All the connections and secure and the charging port is secure also - not loose or anything.I still have 5 months left of my warranty, do you think I would be able to get a new laptop adapter? I bought this laptop earlier this year so it's still fairly new. Thanks

Have you tried running it off just the battery? Also try running it with the Battery removed and just using the Power Adapter.

My hp laptop, less than 5 years old, won't turn on. Before this happened, Everytime I used it, the fan was really loud and it would overheat just from being on my lap. Now when I press the power button, the wireless light is the only one that lights up - no sounds or lights otherwise. The indicator light when it's plugged in is a solid white.I've removed the battery, took out power plug, held down power button, and no luck. I ordered a new battery and had the same luck. Please help! No clue the technical type if laptop it is, as it won't turn on to know. .the battery was a GU06 if that helps

Product Name: HP ENVY 15-u010dx x360 Convertible PCProduct Model: 15-U010dXOperating System: Windows 8.1 (64-bit)When Purchased: July 2014 The Problem: The LED charging light flashes continuously (even when powered off or plugged in) and when the laptop is plugged in, the battery simply will not charge.  Details: This just started today. When the laptop is plugged in, it states "plugged in, not charging." However, the battery doesn't lose charge while it's plugged in. It's like the computer is dependent upon the power cord and the battery is shot.  This is strange because I don't leave my laptop charging for long periods of time. Thinking back, my laptop has died at around 11% charge since I purchased it. What I've Tried:turning it off and back oninstalling updates and restartingseeing if the laptop would charge while it's offswitching cordsswitching outletshours of browsing HP and other support forumsI'm hesitant to try any battery calibration or removal until I know whether my battery is removable. Hopefully, you all can help. I also don't even know what the diagnosis of the problem is, and don't want to spend money taking it in to get it fixed until I have a better idea.

My original charger came up missing. Looked everywhere no luck. I bought an off brand, charger that had the right specs and was a 2 prong ac cord. It would turn on the charging/power indicator light, but would not power on the laptop after being on charge all night. Returned it after remembering my original charger had 3 prongs. Got a 3 prong ac/dc charger that claims to be compatible with the charging specs on my laptop. The led on the dc half of the charger is on but now the charge/power indicator light doesn't come in at all. It's the only laptop I have.

I had the battery replaced in my studio 1558 recently and since then each time I use it after an hour or two of usage the fan comes on at full speed and remains on constantly and the power/charge indicator light alternates constantly between blinking orange and steady white. If i restart the machine i get a message during boot up that the system doesn't recognise the battery and it will not be charged and the only way i can restore normal operation is to shut down completely and restart. Despite the issue and the battery message, the battery is actually charging and appears to hold the charge fine but i am worried that there is some other issue or that it is an issue with the new battery and it will eventually malfunction completely. The repair shop who replaced the battery have taken the machine back and checked it and said they can find nothing wrong with it and have not seen the fan and light issue happen while the machine was in their shop. Can anyone shed any light on this for me??
