CD-RW Configuration - from slave to single configuration?

Q: CD-RW Configuration - from slave to single configuration?

I have an old P3 system that I let my son use for internet browsing, email, etc. It has been rock solid for 6+ years until lately and I think the issue of not booting properly is that the master CD-ROM gave up the ghost. And so I took that out hoping that is all it will take.

Here is my question (and I feel so much like a noob; I did try to google but I got nothing): Where do I place the tab to take it from slave to single configuration? As slave the tab was placed on the far left in the verticle position. Am I correct in that to make it singular I need to place it horizontally on the bottom two prongs center-right?

I hope I am making myself clear. This is an old system and it has been years since setting it up and I don't have my manuals anywhere. I couldn't even access Buslink's website.

Thanks for your help.

Preferred Solution: CD-RW Configuration - from slave to single configuration?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: CD-RW Configuration - from slave to single configuration?

The jumper will fit on the pins, based on what is imprinted or embossed on the drive. It is usually very difficult to see... but if you use a flashlight or other device you can place at different angles, you can see how the jumper choices are stamped into the metal. Most often the center two are Slave, the right is Master, and the left is Cable Select.
I suggest you jumper it as master.
If it is a known brand, you can find a drawing on the website of the optical drive manufacturer.

I recently upgraded drives. I had a 15.3Gig c:\ (master) and a 1.2Gig d:\ (slave). I upgraded the slave (which I only use to store my junk) to a 6.0Gig. Now when running a Norton system check it gives me this message:

Hard Drive Integrity Scan
! Drive D:\ may not be configured correctly. Hard Drive Integrity Scan cannot run on this drive. Please consult the ReadMe.TXT file for more information on this problem. OK

I can't find that ReadMe.TXT, or rather the right one. Can anyone tell me just where to go to configure the drive correctly, or is it not so simple? I know my way around my machine, but I'm no expert.

I am running Windows XP Pro. In the sytem I have:

Primary: Maxtor HDD (master) - no slave

Secondary: Aopen CD-RW (master) - Asus CD player (slave)

In the next couple of days I will be aquiring an NEC 2510a DVD burner/player.

I would appreciate instructions on the correct configuration on setting-up all of these drives. Meaning which drives should be conected on cables together and whether the drive should be designated as master or slave.

The following is how I assume they should be connected:

Primary: Maxtor HDD (Master) - Asus CD player (Slave)

Secondary: NEC DVD Burner (Master) - Aopen CD-RW (Slave)
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Ok here is my issue. I will appreciate any help I can get. If this topic has been done before I apologize and ask that you all bear with me.

I owned a laptop. Things went sour eventually and I ended up removing my hard drive from the laptop. I got a new laptop and wanted some extra storage space. Flash drives just weren't working for me as they didn't provide enough gigs for what I wanted to store. I ended up buying an external hard drive kit (Rocket Fish) and put my old hard drive inside of it so that it would function as a USB drive. Things worked out swell for a while until I wanted to clear up the old data from my previous computer. When I tried to delete the old folders with my desktop info and in the folder labeled "Windows" (for example) and it said that I didn't have permission. I got frustrated when I realized that I now had seriously limited storage capacity. Aside form that my "new external hard drive" needed a power source or it would go to sleep. I ended up just buying a regular external (Iomega 500gb) and have it now. It doesn't have an external power source but seems to just turn off randomly or go to sleep which worries me. I have a lot of info on it. (Thats another issue though) I am now resorting back to my Rocket Fish but can't just get the darn thing to be read as a USB and have permission to do whatever I want to on it. Instead I don't have permission to delete any of my old data. I looked up master sla... Read more

i understand the new (& also weird) 'ms office' protocol...whereby, when one attempts to open an office program...a 'Microsoft Installer' progress window pops up & runs BEFORE the app opens. it's annoying, but tolerable 'cause at least it's fast (know this because i installed 'publisher' last year).

but I just purchased 'microsoft office home & business 2010'...so i could go back to outlook (& get rid of windows live mail)...& in outlook...the Microsoft Installer window runs longer than usual...& then...seemingly w/ every e-mail account that gets opened for incoming mail...another progress window pops up called 'Microsoft Single Image'...& that keeps coming up & up; & just takes forever.

ALSO: in ms word...a 'program configuration' window pops up & runs...& that one REALLY takes a long time

i really need to get rid of this nonsense, or i'm going back to live mail...will have no choice.

anyone have any ideas...???

So i need to do something that allow ( managers) to monitor employees activity on the system during working hours.

On one pc is windows xp pro on the other os windows 7 home premium.

Any idea how i can acomplish this task?

Also the users will be using almost all the same programs and files just the with different information.

But for Windows 7 Home Premium you will not have the
Local Security Policy so you may need to upgrade to Windows 7 Pro for that.

In your case, you need to put your local LAN subnet in the trusted zone for ZA, and sharing will work.

I'm just wondering if anyone can help me with a problem I have with getting a VPN to work. A friend of mine wants to be able to share his Outlook 2007 Business Contact Manager Database with remote PC's. I've set up the Office Computer to allow incoming connections and configured the router to accept incoming connections over the internet. I can establish a connection from the client computers but cannot acces any of the shared files etc. Below are some settings that may help.

BT Voyager 220v Router
LAN IP 192.*****
WAN IP 86.*****
Office PC IP 192.*****
Primary DNS 194.*****
Secondary DNS 62.****
I've set the LAN IP as the DMZ host and enabled Port Forwarding to the Office PC. I've also opened up port 1723 (which I believe needs to be opened for VPN connections to work?)

The client uses to connect to the Office and this works fine. Is there something fundamental that I am missing here?

Please let me know if you require any further information.

Thanks in advance.

I have been very happy with XP (mostly desktops) and have completely avoided Vista for our company. I have no experience with Windows 7. I am ready to upgrade our sales personnel to laptops and am wondering if I will be happy with the speed of the following setup:

Intel Core 2 Duo 1.66 GHz
2 GB RAM (considering upgrade to 4GB)
Windows 7 Pro

The computers are used mainly for email, a little bit of internet, printing, office documents, etc.. They will be taking these computers to accounts so startup speed is a little bit of a factor.

Will this hardware configuration perform adequately or will it bog down with Windows 7.

For whatever reason, I have to reset the video configuration each time I open the player for a movie, because it will not retain those settings once the player is closed.

This caused me to look for a means of setting these value permanently. I found two files that are involved to an extent....vlcrc and the vlc-qt-interface.ini. The former appears to be a fairly large file with a lot of options, but almost every line is preceded with a #, with I assume means that it is commented out. Scrolling through the "options", I didn't find anything so as I could set contrast, brightness, hue, saturation or gamma.

The latter file appears to be a more active file, but is much, much more brief, and I don't see anything that I need there either.

Does anyone really understand how these could be used to accomplish what I want?

A:VLC Configuration

It happens with me as well. Everytime I reopen VLC to play any media, it will never retain any settings. I guess that's how its designed to work.

thats too hot, AMD's webite states that an Athlon64 has a max temp of 70ºC, which obviously means that your system is overheating, which suprises me that you haven't had more problems. Are your fans working?? are they loaded with dust??

Heat is an electronic component's worst enemy, especially in a laptop, where an overheated CPU can cause other nearby components (including RAM) to overheat as well.

Hi, Just after a bit of advice...

I have an MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum motherboard with 4 dimm slots and 2 matching pairs of 512MB doublesided PC3200 DDR ram to fill them with...

If I install all 4, I can have 2GB of memory, running in dual channel mode - but, due to restrictions of the motherboard/processor/nvidia chipset (depending on where you read), the 400MHz RAM speed gets adjusted down to 333MHz...

My alternatives are to install just 2, meaning I'd have 1GB 400MHz memory running in dual channel mode, or 1.5GB 400MHz memory running in single channel mode.

I'm sure there will be limited difference between the options, but if anyone has any ideas on what my best bet would be, I'd be grateful (I currently have all 2GB installed).

For the record, I'm using the computer for general word processing/Internet and gaming, but also for home recording, if that has any bearing.

Thanks, Jake

P.S. I searched the forums on this topic and found someone with a similar dilemma, but in that case the choice was between 4GB at 333MHz and 2GB at 400MHz, which I imagine has less impact on the overall performance of the PC. Anyway, hope you don't mind me asking again

A:Best RAM configuration?

So you're saying you have 400 mhz PC3200 installed with 4 Chips totaling 2GB running at 333 Mhz? Right? Does your BIOS have an advanced area where you can tweak it? If so you might have to adjust some voltage to the RAM and set it to run at 400 Mhz

And, btw, sorry for my bad English, it isn't my native language

Activating my computer from Sleep mode causes the following message: The connection between your computer and the internet or your local network has changed. Decide whether to reate a new Personal Firewall profile or use an existing profile for this connection.
IP Configuration
Default Gateway xx xx xx xx
MAC address xx xx xx xx xx xx

1. Does my internet service provider assign me a new ip and gateway address every time I log on, for better security?
2.Is the Gateway address the isp's address?
3. Is the MAC address my computer's MAC?

Thank you.

A:ip configuration

Answer 1: No.
2: Yes.
3: Yes.

Open and elevated command prompt and type ipconfig /release and press ENTER.
It should release your current ip address and will change to
Then type ipconfig /renew and press ENTER.
It should give you a new ip address. Then you should not have any issues with it.

Ok here is my situation........I have set my computer address at 192.168.x.x, I am behind a Linksys 4 port Cable/Dsl router which has a gateway address of 192.168.1.x, I also have cable access. My question is when I go out to the internet I always get an address of 65.206.x.x, I play alot of games and also use Roger Wilco, I have no problems playing games but I can NOT figure out how to get people to connect to me, for example when I use Roger Wilco and set up a server it tells me my address is 192.168.x.x, I know that is not really my address that is just the address of my workstation, what do I tell people? what address do I give them? I am pretty familar with port forwarding but that does not seem to work.......I have asked this question many times and I cannot seem to get a straight answer, here is a list of the "status" screen of my linksys router and yet not anywhere is that 65.206.x.x address, where is that comming from, please someone help me!! let me know if you need more info.

(MAC Address: 00-06-25-xx-xx-xx)
IP Address:
Subnet Mask:
DHCP server: Disabled
(MAC Address: 00-50-2C-xx-xx-xx)
IP Address: 10.20.xxx.xxx
Subnet Mask:
Default Gateway: 10.20.xxx.xxx
DNS: 10.20.xx.xx
DHCP Remaining Time: 5 days 14:20:44

A:WAN/LAN Configuration

You need to do port forwarding on your router. Set it up to forward requests from the 65.206.x.x address to your internal 192.168.1.x address with the correct port or ports for the game. The port number should be in the game documentation.

Hi all
I am planning for a new pc..a high performance once..really confused in selecting a processor..which one will be best? Intel P4 Core 2 Duo 2.2 Ghz or a 3.4 GHz Dual Core(with a 4 GB RAM and motherboard Intel 945)? Pls advice

A:Regarding Configuration

If you plan on doing any virtualization, get a processor (Intel or AMD) that supports the Intel or AMD virtualization technology (i.e. with the instruction support) x86 virtualization.

I do like the 4GB RAM! Stay with it regardless of processor you decide to get.

Intel 945 processor may not support virtualization though - check the article in the above link.

Let's jump right into it.
I am unable to connect to the internet, and I can't figure out why.
In Google Chrome, it says "DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NO_INTERNET". My network icon has a yellow triangle.
I connect through LAN with an ethernet cable. I don't have admin access to my router. It is a LinkSys and I can successfully view the login page through . I am using Windows 7.
My friend's computer, when plugged into the same ethernet port, has zero problems. I tried different ethernet cables and the problem persisted.
This happens with both my PC and laptop. I use an ethernet switch to connect both of them to one wall port. Of course I have tried plugging each of them in directly. The problem persists.

When I reboot my computer, new networks appear randomly and seem to stop when it hits "Network 4". Seems like it fails to remember the old network that it was on.. (see pic in next post)

Automatic troubleshooting is unable to identify any problem.

I have since tried merging the network locations and, using an elevated command prompt, running:
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /all
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /renew
netsh int ip set dns
netsh winsock reset

and then restarting my computer. This worked for one day until I restarted again. The same fix no longer works.

I have also tried disabling my antivirus and Windows Firewall to no avail.

I booted in Safe Mode with Networking and the same connectivity problems persisted. This sho... Read more

I'm planning to buy the Dell Inspiron 5000 Gaming - 5577 from here
I want to know whether the RAM is 8x1 or 4x2. I've checked the service and config manuals, but they only contain information about supported types. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I'm considering to buy the new Abit KX7-333 mobo soon which has 4 DIMM slots and i wanted to know, would there be a difference if i bought 4 x 128mb PC2100 DDR DIMMS compared to 2 x 256mb in performance in relation to "memory interleaving options"?

The 128mb is slightly cheaper the 256mb version by about £5 each and PC2700 is too expensive and not worth it atm.

A:DDR RAM Configuration

The only difference I've seen is that when you decide you want to double the memory again, you'll have to replace all the modules rather than just adding two more. Otherwise I haven't ever seen or read of any performance gain or loss from either option. I haven't seen any test results of any comparisons either. Then again I never really thought about it as I've always tried and recommended going for the two stick option rather than four so it is easier and cheaper to upgrade the RAM later.

A:My New PC Configuration.... [Need Help]

i dont think 2x3gb sticks of ram exist for 6gb total...
your heatsink will come with thermal paste which is good, i got a xigmatek s963 for my 955 black edition - but its your choice
buy a standard clocked 6870, that card wont be worth the money, you can overclock it in MSI afterburner to the turbo edition easily
the only thing with the case is the huge mesh that doesnt filter dust, but if it isnt very dusty where you keep it then no worries
with an nzxt hades case + xfx graphics card i could come up to 850 euro's
