Updating a Win8 Pro to Win8.1 Pro with a Legal Upgrad disc

Q: Updating a Win8 Pro to Win8.1 Pro with a Legal Upgrad disc

I've a windows 8 Pro package that require me to install it as follows: Upgrade eligibility requirements apply. I had no problems here, I've upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro. Also I've had no problem having done the update through the Windows Store to Windows 8.1. I'm happy. My question though is thus:

Can I, with my legal Windows 8 Pro Upgrade-key-package download the Windows 8.1 Pro ISO and use that instead of the Windows Store feature to update my system to Windows 8.1 Pro?

Thank you.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My friend is running a cracked version of Windows 8 and he got the "activate windows" watermark on the screen.

He wants to buy a legal copy of windows 8 but he doesn't want to format and reinstall. Basically, he just wants to buy it so the watermark can diseapear.

So is there a way to pay to register a cracked copy of Windows 8 without having to reinstall ? How ?

Bought a used HP laptop that originally had Win7 Ultimate, and the previous owner had split the hard drive into two partitions and put Win8 Pro on the second partition. The boot up process is controlled by Win8 and you select at startup whether you want to go to Win7 or Win8. Pretty neat. BUT it turns out the Win8 Pro was not legit (the Win7 installation is legit). Sigh.

So I have purchased a full standalone copy of Win8 Pro and it is on the way to the house. In the meantime, how does one "reset" the Win8 Pro to the new key value without messing up either the installation or the bootup process on this dual boot machine?

Thanks.

I currently have Win7 & Win8 preview in separate partitions on the same machine. I am trying to figure out the best way to install win8 pro on my system and keep my current dual boot setup with Win 7 intact and stay legal.

So....I have a 3 licence family pack of windows 7 of which I have used only 1 licence. Is there some way I can use one of the remaining win7 licences to upgrade win8pro over top of the Win8 preview and keep my current dual boot win7/win8 setup(legally) and without messing up my current Win7 installation (or Win 8 preview installation for that matter)? Is there any advantage in getting the OEM version instead?

A:Question- upgrading win7HP/win8 preview dual boot to win7/win8 pro

If I understand it correctly; Anyone dual booting a legit version of Window Vista, XP or Win7 and Win8 RP can use the upgrade version of Win8 to do a clean install over the Win8 RP version.

I just purchased an HP Pavilion 20 All-In-One desktop computer that unfortunately had Windows 8 on it - I needed a computer immediately and no one in town had an all in one with 7 pro. I purchased Windows 7 Pro SP1 64 bit OEM software (from reputable store; computer is 64bit) and thought it would be an easy install - insert disk, follow directions. It acts as if it's installing windows 7, but when it gets to the screen which shows the language, time and - forgot the last drop down choice, I don't have use of the mouse or keyboard. I can't tab, use arrow keys, or anything. I have spent hours searching online before bothering anyone for free advice, but now I'm looking for free advice. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Also, do I post this in Windows 7 Pro or 8 ?

Let me add that this All In One does not have the touch screen monitor.

Hopefully my explanation of this problem is not too confusing, this my first post.

My system is a multi-boot for Win7, Win8.1 & XP. I boot into Win7 most of the time. The multi-boot is controlled via EasyBCD in Win7. My data drive is a separate disk - F. I have been running this configuration for over a year without any major problems.

The system is an older Dell-XPS Core2 Quad CPU Q9450 A 2.66GHz with 8Gb memory
System drive - 1Tb with four partitions
Data drive - 1 Tb one partition

Recently I booted into Win8.1 after a few weeks of using only Win7. The data drive F: was not available. It does not show up in Disk Management and under Device Manager it shows as not connected to the system when the Unavailable Devices are displayed.

Booting back to Win7, the data drive is available, no problems with it. There are not any errors in the event/system logs in Win8.1 or Win7 related to the data drive F.

One possible cause might be that the motherboard battery was replaced about a week ago. I had to go in the BIOS and make changes for problems encountered when Win7 was booted. Unfortunately, I didn't boot Win8.1 to see if it had any problems. I've looked at the BIOS, but don't see anything that might cause this problem.

The config for the EasyBCD is below for boot into Win7
There are a total of 4 entries listed in the bootloader.

Default: Microsoft Windows 7
Timeout: 30 seconds
Boot Drive: C:\

Name: Windows 8.1

I just recovered my system back to oem win 8. Is it best to let Microsoft update automatically, or is it safe to manually install updates? I did this back in April and the updates somehow got corrupted and have to recover again.

A:updating a new win8 recover

Hi wpmac Personally, I would let Windows install all the "Important Updates" automatically, as these are security-related updates and it's important to have them released as soon as they are released. As for the "Recommended Updates", you can install them manually. Basically, check which ones can be installed, leave out the drivers/hardware updates (it can be dangerous to install them via Windows Updates) and you can install the rest. Other that right now I suggest you to install all the "Important Updates" you can, then head to the Windows Store to upgrade to Windows 8.1, and finally install all the new "Important Updates" that comes with Windows 8.1 after that

Could be a couple of reasons.

Reboot your phone. Sometimes they just won't talk to each other. All USB cables are not equal. If you use the cable that came with your phone, you should have no problem. If you are using a different cable that came with another device, it may or may not work.

Hello Guru Members

I work for a small charity organisation for the elderly, (not trying to pluck heart strings), and the situation is that we were granted 7 new computers, these computers have Windows 8.1, and because we have an existing domain network we actually need to have Windows 8.1 Professional installed.

So prior to knowing that Windows 8.1 could not connect to our network, I had already started getting all the Windows updates, and cleaning the PC's of all the Lenovo add-on's software.

Once I realised that it was not Windows 8.1 Pro on the PC's but only Windows 8.1, being a charity we were able to purchase from the Microsoft Volume Licensing Centre 7 Windows 8.1 Professional licences.

I tried to use the VLC licence through the 'Windows Add-on's feature in Windows 8.1 , but a Volume Licence key is not accepted, and i have also been told that I must download the Windows 8.1 Professional .ISO from the Volume Licensing Centre, and install this particular download version.

But my question is, when I do the installation from Windows 8.1 to Windows 8.1 pro, will it give me the option to do an upgrade installation, I worried as I don't want to lose all the previous windows updates, and Lenovo hardware driver files.

Or, is there a way to get the Volume Licence Key into the existing Windows 8.1 to unlock the Pro features, or even a clever way to trick the Windows installation.

Any members help would be really helpful.

kind regards

After responding, I?d also be interested in hearing about problems you have had using Windows 8/UEFI that appear to be associated with using UEFI (i.e., they most likely would not have occurred, in your opinion, under BIOS). UEFI boot (Secure boot not necessary).

Now when I switch in UEFI setup at boot time the UEFI mode into the CSM (BIOS) mode

As far as I find out an UEFI-based Windows 8 can only boot with UEFI mode enabled.

So my question is: Can I turn an existing UEFI based Windows 8 installation into

If yes: How do I do that?

Hey all,

I have been going crazy trying to find the nitty-gritty details of what goes on under the hood with the upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 on a Surface Pro 2 I am considering upgrading.

I am aware the many Windows 8.1 devices have OEM Product Keys embedded in the BIOS. I am trying to find information on how Windows 10, if installed from a .ISO bootable media, interacts with this key, and how Digital Entitlement plays into all of this. It's currently hard for me to make sense of a lot of this. Can anyone help clarify how all these elements play with one-another?

Another question regarding this process I have currently: If I use a NEW Windows 10 product key during installation, would the new key replace the previous (8.1 OEM) one in the BIOS?

The more I find out about all this, the more mystery there seems to be to it. I am just trying to find the cleanest way to install Windows 10 on a Surface Pro 2, and this BIOS OEM key and Digital Entitlement vs. Product Key thing is really confusing me. Sorry if this isn't the best place to ask, I'm just pretty lost right now and could really use advice from someone who's really knowledgeable about this stuff, currently.

Thanks all .

As I am currently back using Win8 due to an unrelated issue, I would like to know how to have Win8 show the SkyDrive folder at the top of the navigation pane whilst still using 'show all folders' and 'automatically expand to folder' settings.

I'm currently hoping that if I uninstall SkyDrive desktop on Windows 8 before I upgrade to the final release version of Windows 8.1, where SkyDrive will be baked-into Win8.1, that will fix it. I am only trying to replicate the behaviour of Win8.1 Preview, which I installed on both my Win8Pro and Win8EnterpriseN machines previously, and both had the built-in SkyDrive folder located at the top of the navigation pane in File Explorer.

Hi everyone, while there seems to be lots of discussion around Win10 and its phoning-home abilities (Windows 10 - Shut down Windows 10 telemetry with Win10 Spy Disabler), I've found less info on solidly preventing Win8.1 (and Win7) from downloading Win10 updates in the first place.

I've just spent a bit of time tightening my system to prevent Win10, here are the steps I've taken:

1. remove individual Windows Updates responsible for downloading Win10.
2. delete the hidden folder where Win10 gets stored: C:\$WINDOWS.~BT
3. re-configuring Windows Updates.
4. checking your system with GWX Control Panel.

Here are the steps in detail:
1. I started with the How-To Geek article How to Stop Windows 7 or 8 from Downloading Windows 10 Automatically (which links to the software GWX Control Panel) and AddictiveTips article What Is The $WINDOWS.~BT Folder On My Hard Drive?. Win8 users need to locate and uninstall KB3035583 and KB2976978. Win7 users need to uninstall KB3035583 and KB2952664. Uninstall both updates and reboot.
2. Search for the folder $WINDOWS.~BT located on your C drive and delete this hidden folder.
3. Open Windows Updates > Change Settings, and make sure 'Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them' is selected. With this option selected you can monitor your future updates to prevent the updates KB3035583, KB2976978, KB2952664 getting reinstalled (see 1st screenshot).
4. Finally I then downloaded GWX Control Pane... Read more

Hey guys, new to this site!
My issue stems from having to re install Windows on my pc. When I turn it on to boot from the cd, it will automatically go to the splash screen without asking to "Press any key to boot from cd..." and then it will power off all my devices and "softly shut off." There is still power going to the pc fans, lights, etc but keyboard, mouse and all that shut off.
My initial guess is that the power supply went bad or it is overheating somewhere. It worked fine until I turned it on and Windows had crashed. I've confirmed all the components are working after installing linux on the machine from a cd. Can there be a Windows virus in the bios? I'm about to go back to it and clear the cmos. One more side note, the linux installation took about twice as long to install as normal with several loading cursors that took about 10 minutes each. Is that another sign that it might be overheating?
Thanks for any help I can get.

The CPU is an old Core2Duo that supports 64bit
This computer meets the minimum requirements listed for Windows 8.1 and the upgrade assistant tool says everything but safeboot will work (which im fine with)

My concern is taking a computer that has been running 32bit for 7 years and making it run 64bit, making an old CPU work harder seems like a bad idea to me but 32bit is outdated now so id really like to upgrade without buying a new computer yet

Is there anyone here that has upgraded a very old PC from 32bit to 64bit, and if so what should i expect
Also should i just get windows 7 64bit since the computer is so old, i plan to format and figured since i have to format i may as well just get the latest version of windows, but if win7 is better for older computers ill just get that

A:Updating 7 year old PC from Win7 32bit to Win8.1 64bit

I run windows 10 x64 on 2006 core2duo. Prior to that I ran 8.1 x64. I believe 8.1 uses slightly less resources than 7 and it is certainly smaller. I would go for that as the upgrade to 10 (might be) free or cheaper from Windows 8.

Note you can't upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit you'll need to do a clean install. This is a good thing anyway as it will reduce the clutter that has accumulated over the years. See here for details Clean Install - Windows 8

Hi All,
I have a system that froze and I have been struggling with for days. Long story short, Lenovo Twist with solid state hard drive and no optical disc drive. I woke up last week and had a black screen. So I rebooted and went through the steps to recover (not 12 after a couple of days of free time I had to force the recovery with f10 and then I could only get the reset windows option to come up wanting me to insert my recovery media.
I don't have any. Windows 8 was preinstalled so I don't have the key. Yes it was visible on the system but that's not an option now and without a optical disc I couldn't burn a recovery disc.
After arguing with Lenovo, Staples, and Microsoft about warranties etc. I want to just get my system running. I want to buy windows 8 and install from a stick or external optical drive right? someone told me I cannot just download to the stick and insert into a usb slot. Someone also said that I cannot restore from a factory (Microsoft) CD if I bought the external drive.
Any suggestions.

Thanks, its been sooo long since I have been here!

Shawn

Now that you're back please bring your signature into compliance (3 line max.). You can update those specs and put them into the Computer specs section of your profile.

The Lenovo support site is not working for me now so I couldn't get to the manual for any of the Twist models. Just to confirm: your model does not have a Novo button beside the power button to "When the computer is off, press this button to start the Lenovo Recovery system or the BIOS setup utility, or to enter the boot menu.", right? f10 is the equivalent, but there is no option to "recover" using the (probably hidden) Recovery partition? Why does Lenovo say that the Recovery partition is unusable?

Hello everyone,

I have a problem with the updating of my adapters. This happens sometime after one hour sometimes after a week. The computer works just fine afterwards aside that I can not use any Lan adapter anymore or any other adapter like usb. When I shut down my Laptop afterwards it always crashes.

Sometimes after restart I get an error message which I saw in a different thread, but there it was told that for a new problem regarding this a new thread should be opened.
Windows 8 Crash Memory.dmp

C:\Windows\minidump\(...).dmp
C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-(...).sysdata.xml
C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP

Where I wrote (...) normally stand numbers but since I don't know which numbers appeared last time and when I will receive this error message again I shortened it like this. I hope someone is able to help me nevertheless.

Many thanks in Advance and I hope I provided you with every needed information!

Hi,

I do not have a Recovery CD from the Acer Recovery Software that you make to reset the pc back to factory default settings. And I then :

1) installed win 8 pro from dvd - and found I could not create a recovery dvd to reset pc back to factory default settings
2) reinstalled win 8 (not pro) which required the win 8 pro dvd to be put into the cd/dvd drive
3) when it was completed,i found that the acer software had all been deleted, and I still could not create the recovery dvd's after installing the acer software as there was message that said that the Hard Drive Configuration Is Not Set To Factory Default, for all options ....to create recovery dvd's or reset etc [as I guess the hdd has the os from the win 8 pro dvd and not the version from the factory.

And when I used the Repair CD
I) there was a message that a system image cannot be found.
Where is the OS that is in the hidden partition [from factory] that can be used to get back to factory settings???
that can be used to reset up win 8 with all the acer software??

I managed to make the repair cd and a copy of the drivers and applications of the acer software but there was no option to create the recovery dvd's as mentioned earlier.

Is there a way to get back to the factory state without sending the pc back to acer??

And now it also wants a key that I don't have,as I now have win 8 installed from a win 8 pro dvd

thanks in advance

Last Fall I bought my wife a Dell All In One with Win8 installed. I seldom, if ever use it for I am sticking with 7 for now. She has Live Mail, Firefox installed and that is about it. No apps other than those that came with the machine.

Is it worth while upgrading to 8.1 and then 8.1Update?

If so, what is the simplest way to go about it?. Not necessarily the cheapest but the easiest.

Thank you very much.

A:Upgrade from Win8 to Win8.1Update

To upgrade from 8.0 you have to do it through the Microsoft store. When you do the upgrade from the Store to 8.1, you automatically will get 8.1 update 1. I just did the upgrade about 10 days ago and discovered this when i did the upgrade.

Hi all,

We have to reinstall Windows 8.1 several times a week, and on older PC's we find ourselves installing Win8 (original version), then doing tons of updates before getting to the stage where we can download and install Windows 8.1.  We have tried using the 8.1 disk, however it doesn't pickup the Win 8 licence number embedded in the laptop or rejects the the original Win8 OEM licence number.

This is costing us loads of time and downloads.

Does anyone know a work-around for this?

Regards

Hi,

This 64GB internal card was working fine on win8.0 Acer v5, laptop.

Tried four different SD cards, win8.1 could not see any.
I have checked with SFC and DISM no problems.
Hardware Diagnostic tool does not find the SD.
Updated drivers from Acer. No help.
Have Auto Play set to use for everything.
Tried 8GB and 32GB SD cards, nothing.
If I plug the SD cards into a USB adapter they all work fine.

This sucks big time as the SD is my daily back up drive.

Any help?

Thanks

A:SD Card Gone after win8.0 update to win8.1

OK, problem solved. Win8.1 kept seeing the SD card slot and installing the "Standard SD card slot drivers.

Acer's Support for this model V5 showed the card reader as an Alcom or something close to that and I was pretty sure that was wrong. I reinstalled an older backup image of win8 and Device manager showed the SD card reader as Broadcom SD SCSI drivers.

I reinstated the win8.1 in place of the win8 backup and then I went back to the Acer V5 models then looked through until I found a card reader that had Broadcom drivers. Downloaded that and installed and all is well with the world again.

Who was at fault? Beats me, but the card reader is obviously telling win8.1 that it is just a vanilla slot. Acer got it wrong for not listing a Broadcom card reader driver with this model. On many of their models they list two or three different drivers, but for mine there was only one and it was the wrong one for what was actually in the laptop.

The original win8.0 worked fine as the Broadcom drives were installed at the Acer factory.

I just downloaded the Technet version of Win8 Pro. When trying to UPGRADE the RP version, I keep getting a message to "remove install media, boot windows normally, and then add the install media afterwards". Of course, nothing happens when I reboot, heh. It LOOKS like I will have to do a clean install on my SSD which I just cloned so no big deal. BUT, if someone manages to upgrade, please post the procedure!

EDIT
Will I be able to upgrade WIndows 8 Release Preview to RTM without - Microsoft Answers

Nope, looks like a clean install is needed but the personal files can be kept... I will let you know.

A:Cannot upgrade to Win8 Pro Retail from Win8 RP.

The way I had heard was you would be able to use an Upgrade Version of RTM if you had RP installed. It would still do a clean install but save your personal files. It was to satisfy the requirement to have a previous version installed for the Upgrade key to work.

Before I upfrade to win 10 I'd like to upgrade to win8.1 pro I have legit disk I bought, but when I try to install I get a message "serial number not match any on system" or something like that. I wiped the C drive but kept the recovery drives and still the same result. Restored the system to factory. Any ideas short of buying a new HD, and if the number is embedded in the MB then it won't help anyway.

A:How to upgrade from preinstalled win8 to win8.1 pr...

the product key is embedded on BIOS and honestly is not worth upgrading to windows 8.1 and then windows 10, it's better if you upgrade directly to windows 10. if your system has Home version sand you want the Pro version, you can simply upgrade to widnows 10 and then change the product key on it, it will switch to Pro version automatically. or you can do a clean windows 10 install and once at desktop change the product key http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/7209-product-key-change-windows-10-a.html

Hoping for some help (Superfly?) with a similar issue, sorry if i'm threadjacking, can move it if needed. Thinkpad W540 purchased last summer, shipped with Windows 8 Pro but i do not have an email or car with the license key. I added on media center which required a separate key which I have. Earlier this year i kept getting the upgrade to 8.1 message and i finally gave in to end the annoyance. It went fine though i had to recreate various settings and such. About a month later, i started to get the activation notifications. I spoke with MSFT to said i was not on a Windows 8.1 Pro retail license (thanks to their pushed upgrade) instead of my OEM which i suppose makes sense. None of the license keys i had work for activation. Trying to make it go away by throwing money at it instead of time, i bought licenses of Windows 8 Pro, Windows 8.1 Pro and Windows 8.1 Pro Pack. None of them worked... So now I don't know what to do which has lead me to this thread. See below for a diagnostic tool report. Any ideas on what i can/should do? I'm hopeful to find a license key and/or hot fix to make this go away as i really do not want to have to do a clean install of Windows. Thanks!

A:Win8 To Win8.1 upgrade gone wrong

Hi and welcome to EF.

Seems you have tried a few key installs that failed ( currently you have the correct key installed which is a full WMC key that should not rely on a base qualifing Pro licence)
Anyway, the licencing store got corrupted - although there are no specific corrupted files as such, it may be prudent to run command prompt - admin:
sfc /scannow

Then try to activate with:
slmgr -ato

Hello everybody!

I received a laptop awhile back that came pre-installed with Windows 8 which I did not enjoy, so I decided to downgrade to Windows 7. Which has been going fine and everything is good, but 2~3 weeks ago I had some questions involving my computers performance that I also requested advice about via this forum and was told that my process is pretty bottom shelf and that Win8 was better for this. Plus, the newest update just released so I am curious as to how they improved on it and if I will like it now. I have been reading and am just a little nervous because I don't want to ruin my only computer that I need for school. Being that Win8 has the UEFI funky new BIOS thing, I recall having to change certain items involving booting when I went back to Win7. So, I am wondering if the BIOS is still the same as when I had Win8 (other than those values that I could change back) or did it completely refigure it? I am not extremely well versed with these sorts of things and have just begun really 'tinkering' a few months ago. So, do I need to update the BIOS for Win8 or is it fine? I am currently backing everything up right now and just want to take the proper steps to ensure a smooth installation. Lastly, I read that the product key for Win8 was now stored on the BIOS and there were programs to retrieve it, but I'm assuming that is when you are running Win8. Is that key lost and do I need to purchase another one? Or would it still be on the BIOS? Any advice is greatly ap... Read more

A:Win8 to Win7 back to Win8 (HELP! w BIOS, product key on BIOS etc.)

Hi Jeremy-

What I would do is shrink C in Disk Mgmt to install Win8 in a Dual Boot to try the new update to see if its anything compelling. This is how I tried Win8 repeatedly until I finally deleted it for the last time realizing it doesn't hold a candle to Win7.

The steps are here for Dual Boot Installation - Windows 8 and Windows 7 or Vista - Windows 8 Forums.

If you changed to Legacy Mode to install Win7, then you can install Win8 in Legacy Mode too. You don't need to use Secure Boot or UEFI which is crapware that adds no extra value but plenty of complications.

I Had Win8.1, tried Win10, had huge problems (Win10 problems and Saitek Drivers non-existent for Win10), went back to Win8.1, Now want to go back 2 Win10 , now that Saitek has newer Win10 drivers for peripherals. (Saitek, was all screwed up refused to make Win10 drivers for a very long time.

Will Win10 install over my Win 8.1 and keep my applications, or will I have to re-load al my applications and programs?

Thanx

I have DCS, IL-2 and also, Steam with Flight Simulators. Also Flight Sticks, etc. Drivers, Software, etc.
All in the Win8.1 install.

A:Had Win8.1, tried Win10, huge problems, back Win8.1, bak 2 Win10

If you use the Media Creation tool to do an upgrade, and as long as you chose "Upgrade this PC now" , you should be fine. The only problems you may encounter are incompatible drivers. You can also create a bootable media, but upgrading it directly is better IMO.
