Lenovo Ideapad Y500 issue - battery drain (shutdown)

Q: Lenovo Ideapad Y500 issue - battery drain (shutdown)

Hello, I have ideapad y500 and I've noticed that when ever I shut it off and power it back on the battery has drained. Its about 12% per night .. Its rly weird bcs i am not using "always on usb" or any others features. I think that it is HW bug or BIOS. I have noticed that when i shut it down -> unplug the power cable then i remove and again attach the battery leave it for 12hours and there weren't any battery drain. So it only appears when i just unplug the power cable and leave it. I have read some topics(some ppl have the same problem) but i haven't find any solution. Is there any solution to solve this problem?? Bios version is the latest one.. I haven find any newest bios ver on your website. Tomas

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm assuming you have win 8. Try this:On the Windows 8 Start Screen, press CNTL + ALT + DEL.On the next screen select the Power icon located in the lower Right. When the options appear, press the SHIFT key and select "Restart". When the next screen appears, select "Turn off your PC". The unit will power down completely.See if you still have the battery draining.Note: Even if the unit is off, a little drain is expected to maintain the clock, etc.

I bought lenovo y500 two days ago in INDIA.  In the lenovo energy management system 8.0, I found a battery calibration option and decided to do it.  The steps mentioned there were as follows. 1. Full charge2. Full discharge  The process performed full charging followed by complete discharge of the battery which caused the laptop to shut down.   When I tried turning on my laptop, it could not start.  The battery charging indicator LED wasnt switched on even though the power cord was inserted into the laptop.  I could start the laptop only after removing the battery.   Once the laptop was on, I inserted the battery back in and it began to charge.  After about 50% of charging, I removed the power cord and inserted it again.  Now the battery couldnt resume charging.  I again had to shut down the laptop and repeat the above steps of inserting battery after switching on the laptop without battery.  Only then the battery would resume charging. After this, I decided to allow the battery to charge to 100%. But, the charging remained stuck at 99% and could not fully charge the battery.  When I removed and reinserted the power cord, the same problem persisted of battery not resuming charging. Please help me with this problem.  I read on few forums about uninstalling microsoft ACPI which supposedly solves this issue.  However, ACPI returns back after I restart my laptop.I also tried switch... A:LENOVO Y500 BATTERY NOT CHARGING AFTER USING LENOVO'S BATTERY GAUGE CALIBRATION

ADMIN Edit - While the original post below is marked as the solution, because service will be required if the battery will no longer charge after performing a battery reset, I am adding a Lenovo update here to confirm.   Normal operation will allow the battery to relearn its capacity characteristics when using the battery reset function.  Typically this is not needed in normal use..   Batteries are equipped with a safety feature that will permanently disconnect them (like a fuse) if cell imbalance or an internal short is detected.   This tends to be statistically infrequent, but also normal, and would require a battery replacement.  (Batteries have a 1 year warranty).   This battery feature can also  produce similar results to what is being discussed in the thread, so it should first be considered by service.   This particular  forum discussion also involves a situation that could affect a limited number of systems, and could lead service to replace the system board during warranty.

If your system experiences these symptoms, please contact service during the warranty period.

I recently bought a Folio 1020. I notice that the battery drains about 1-2% per day if it is not plugged in using the AC adaptor. I google about this problem and tried the following "fixes":1) disable "USB charging port" in BIOS2) disable "Fast Startup" in Windows 103) disable "Intel Engine Management Interface" driver (I tried uninstalling it, but it automatically reinstall after reboot) but the device continues to lose charge after complete shutdown and not plugged in. Is this normal?

Hi, I have a HP Spectre x360 PRO (i5-5300U), and I am actually very happy with it. However the battery drains very quickly when the notebook is shut down. It drains about 10% per 24 hours and after a couple of days it won't even start without hanging it to the charger.  As the problem exists since the notebook was brand new, I assume it is not related to the battery. I learned there might be a fix for this problem (Sphinx) but I didn't find the download unfortunatelly. I would appreciate any help!  Thanks!

I got this issue for a long time. Don't know if this is a factory defect, or perhaps a design flaw on Lenovo. The battery was good to ok when I first got it, then came all the Windows 10 updates which made it worse. I would just normally use it and most of the time I only got around 1.5-2 hours. I tried everything, control start-up items, control background apps, disabled Fast Boot even reduced the screen brightness but to no avail. All my drivers are updated, even the BIOS.Does anyone have this issue? If you do, did you try any other tricks that might have even temporarily solved this issue?I wish some of the moderators can report this to Lenovo Engineers, so they can find a solution.

I tried most recommendations i found online, like unplug power adapter, batter, hit button 10 seconds, 15 seconds 30 seconds, remove ram nothgint works.  I removed back cover. unplugged i guess the power port. then blinking light went away, I thought maybe it's stuck in sleep mode. It was defintily dead. plugged back in power port. The blinking light came back. the fan spans. just computer does not boot up. What are the odds both batter and power adapter both dead.  thanks for your help,

I have noticed many battery drain problems with the Spectre range of notebooks.  I have had my Spectre 13-v002tu for a week now and notice that if I shut it down overnight with 100% charged battery, by the morning it has about 35% charge remaining.  I have read your article on understanding battery technology which I have found useful.I have disabled the rapid start up function in Windows 10 but it still discharges. I do leave the charger connected to the computer but switched off at the mains overnight. Would the computer battery discharge back through the charger when switched off? This is most frustrating as I have paid a premium price for this high-end notebook and would expect it to perform very well.

That's charge the battery to 100%, completely shut down the system, boot the computer after 30 days and the battery will be less than 2%. I did the following things and it didn't seem to work. turn off quick rebootdisable the following items in BIOS:'USB alway On''Wake on LAN''Wake by Thunderbolt(TM) 3'unplug any USB devices after shutdownI also did some modification on system config, which still didn't sovle the problem.

It turns out that the BIOS 'might' be outdated. My BIOS is 1.48 (04/29/2019), there's a new release afterward (1.48-1.10, 05/17/2019). In the readme file, it explicitly says that<1.48-1.10>UEFI: 1.48 / ECP: 1.10- (Fix) Fixed the battery will leak when the system is power-off.Lots of people who have the same kind of issue on multiple machines report that after updating BIOS the batteries stop draining. Also, I've tried many ways and have a feeling that it's less likely due to different settings of the system or BIOS. It could be a bug that causes uncontrollable leak. So I guess that the new release of BIOS should fix this bug. I haven't tried it yet, but think this sounds a reasonable approach. I'll report when I finish the updating.

Tried again, 3 times already but the same result. Then I tried downloading Window 8.1 ISO through official channels with success but when I try it that way it requires me to input my present Windows 8 product serial which originally came with the machine. But that didn't work because it is OEM.  Ultimately I am trying to upgrade to windows 10 but I need to upgrade to 8.1 first.

Hi guys, this is my first post in these forums. Now, I searched a lot for a solution to my problem, but now I'm creating this thread.I got a Lenovo Ideapad Y500, and it worked really well for like a month, then I started hearing this really loud whirring noise and some vibration coming from the left side of the laptop, near the heat vents. I shut my laptop off and when I turned it backon It was gone. But now the noise is back and whenever I reboot my laptop is goes away but then it comes back after a while. Also, whenever I run the dust removal thingy in the Lenovo energy management app, It gets really loud then it goes away.I don't really feel lots of air coming out from the vent on the leftside of the laptop. I think it might be a fan problem but my laptop stays around 45-65 Celsius mostly. I don't know how hot it runs when I play games, though. Any help on this unnatural whirring sound that starts after a while is really appreciated.

I have a lenovo ideapad y500 with a 1366x768 screen, and I am looking to pop open the screen, and replace the panel with a 1920x1080 screen. Assuming that I purchase another 15.6 inch screen (size of the original screen), is this possible? A model of the y500 is sold with a 1080p display, and the graphics card in my model is more than capable of outputting such a resolution. I was just wondering if there is a chance that the connections between my laptop and new screen would not match as I do not know if there is some sort of standard port with screens. Thanks!

A:Screen upgrade lenovo ideapad y500

You would need to find out the exact model of the 1080p screen was that was sold with that model and order the same one or compatible replacement model. Laptop screens are not universally interchangeable and you can't just buy any screen and connect it.

So, long story short. I accidentally deleted my recovery partition and now it seems like the only thing that will get my laptop up and running normally again is a recovery disc from Lenovo. I just got off the phone with customer service and they informed me that recovery discs can not be ordered in USB form.  This is where my main issue is. My Lenovo Ideapad Y500 laptop did not come with a CD-ROM Drive. With that being said, I do not want to spend $69 on a recovery disc that will require me to purchase an external CD-ROM drive that potentially won't even work... When I asked customer support if I could return and get a refund for the disc if it will not boot through an external CD-ROM drive, they said no. Has anyone been able to run a recovery disc from an external cd-rom drive successfully? Any suggestions? I'm at my wit's end with this thing...

Hi, I bought a HP Spectre 4151ng 4 weeks ago here in Germany. Since I used it regulary the first days I didn't notice that the battery drains while the notebook is completly shut down. No sleep mode, no hibernation, no usb charging, no fast startup, no dongles or anything which might stop the notebook from being completely off. The drain is about 5% per 24h. Sometimes even more (3% in 6 hours). I've found several complaints here in this forum. But no real solution. For another model someone posted a so called - maybe no official - "Sphinx FW Update". I'm assuming that this thread may not even receive any replies based on the times I've attempted to receive aid from any professional within the Lenovo community. I'll give it a shot anyways. Hello, I've had my Lenovo y40-70 for a little over a year (so that means my warranty is expired--do not tell me to use my warranty to fix my issue). After updating to Windows 10, I've had extremely bad battery life. It would drop from 100% to a hibernating state within the hour. Previously, I've received acceptable battery performance with maybe about 3-4 hours of usage. I've tried updating all my drivers and playing around with battery settings etc. I've uninstalled the energy manager application and am unwilling to perform a gauge reset due to the potential negative effects it may have on the my system. Anyone have any idea on how to fix this issue besides rolling back to Windows 8.1? Oh yeah, I've also tried calling Lenovo support but I was literally on the line for 2 hours listening to a song. Any help is appreciated. May have to end up getting a different laptop if this problem persists.

I have similar issues with my Y40.  Add to that a loss of notification when the battery is low, so the Y40 goes into Hibernate without warning.  Also the data displayed about the amount of charge remaining in the battery stays above 90% most the time while running on the battery, even after 90 minutes of use. Tried uninstalling and updating the Energy Manager. And have tried various adjustments to the power plans. Nothing has solved the problems of unpredictable and erratic battery life, or at least what the Y40 thinks the battery charge level is at.

Hi I have purchased new lenovo laptop g5080 but i have seen my laptop battery suddenly drain upto 6%.I have face this problem kindly give appropriate solution.. Thanks

A:Lenovo G50-80 battery drain upto 6% after 50%

Hi Abdul,

Welcome to Lenovo Forums.

Method 1:
Go to Device manager >>Battery and then uninstall the Microsoft ACPI- Compliant control method Battery and then restart and check...

Method 2:
Go to Energy Manager >> Maintenance Guide>> Gauge reset by plugging in the Adapter and leave it as it is.... This Gauge reset will charge the battery for 100% and then drains it to 0 % and then gives the pop up to restart... After restarting it should be fine....

Method 3: Use the One Key recovery...
I hope the above information helps.

Regards,
Shashi

Hello guys, Got Lenovo Y50-70 Touch laptop. So my problem is Battery drain during gaming. While my laptop is plugged in on power supply it still drains battery for example when I play "Dying Light". Any ideas why? please help.

A:Lenovo battery drain during gaming

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

What are the specifications of the charger / adapter you are using (voltage and amperage) ?

If it is a low wattage it may not be keeping up with the resource demands the laptop is requiring during gaming.  If the laptop is drawing more power than the charger / adapter can supply then it is drawing on the battery for the extra power.  I had a similar issue with another brand of laptop I owned and resolved the issue by upgrading the charger / adapter from 90 watt to 120 watt.  In my situation it would drain the battery just surfing the net and viewing videos for an extended period of time.  A side benefit of the higher wattage adapter is that it will charge the battery faster.

In checking the Hardware Maintenance Manual for your model it is shows that your computer could have been shipped with either a 45 watt adapter or a 135 watt adapter.  I suspect you have the 45 watt unit.  Please see page #97 of the manual for the adapter specifications.   Here is a link to that manual....

Beware the Lenovo Vantage app. My PC (Carbon X1 gen 6) started to auto wake up every weekday morning at 05:30 from hibernate, even when I was away on holiday. I had a frustrating time trawling through scheduled tasks, power plan settings and device power settings, all to no avail. The powercfg sleep study and wake timer diagnostics did not help either - it just said unknown wake reason. The culprit? It's Lenovo's own app - Lenovo Vantage. There is a (new?) feature called Smart Standby that automatically set itself to ON. This automatically wakes your computer every weekday at 05:30 ready for work. It must save all of 10 seconds start up on my laptop. I've turned it off and hurrah, the PC stays hibernated. Also it fixes another issue - I found that the "Hibernate After" time setting was being changed from my value. Yes, Lenovo Vantage was silently zapping that too. So beware this dangerous app. Shame on Lenovo for turning this feature on by default and not explaining its consequences better.
