Clicking a link for a web site takes me to unknown site instead

Q: Clicking a link for a web site takes me to unknown site instead

Whenever I click on a link, even if it is a link presented by Google as a result of a search, I am often taken to various different web sites I never heard of before. My husband is very computer literate but does not feel comfortable fixing this without your advice.

When I tried updating my PC-cillin information I got an error saying, "Update unsuccessful. Check your Internet connection, and then try again. Consult the Online Help for additional instructions. (-1)"

We think this could be a result of being highjacked. We do have internet connectivity. For example this message is being sent from the computer that is having the problem.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi,I slipped up recently and downloaded a programme that I suspected as a virus as soon as I opened it. Shortly afterwards I found that I was running "b.exe" and "msa.exe" - both common virus programmes. I ran spybot, Ad-Aware and AVG, as well as RegCure. Spybot found the msa.exe (and I believe the b.exe was part of the same problem), and got rid of them. However, I clearly still have some adware on my computer, as my internet browser (firefox) is running slowly, and when I click on search links, I am directed elsewhere than I intended, and have to click back to go where I wanted.I have attached my hijackthis log file.Any help would be very gratefully received Cheers,Davey Boy.EDIT:Apologies, since writing this post, I ran Malware Bytes (suggestion I found from a google search). This has not fixed the problem, although it did find some infections. I have uploaded the new hijackthis log, and the Malware Bytes log.

OK guys, I've searched on the Internet for HOURS, and even looked at other people's solutions but the ones I've seen haven't worked. Every time I click a download link to Microsoft's website it will open for a second or two and then close as if the Internet connection has died (which it hasn't).

I have Windows XP Media Center Edition, if it helps. I use AVG Free 8.5.something, but have tried turning off the resident shield and even uninstalling it to see if it was blocking access in some way, but it had no effect. I've tried using IE8 and Chrome, but neither those nor my usual Firefox work using it. Windows Firewall is turned off and I have no other antivirus protection or firewalls, etc.

Yes, I've tried rebooting, I've tried every malware tool available and they can't find anything but the odd tracking cookie. I've tried the winsock command. Also, it's not my modem because another computer on the same network has no such problem.

For example, I can get to this page;

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...0B-F857-4A14-83F5-25634C3BF043&displaylang=en

but when I click download it fails. Also, websites that start "http://g.live.somethingorother" do not work.

Reaching the end of my tether. Can anyone help?

Hi, I'd appreciate some help with this problem. As you can see it'a fairly old machine which has been stable and trouble-free for years. I run AVG, AdAware, and Spybot weekly usually with nothing more sinister than cookies appearing in the results. The only odd result I can recall was W32.Small.ddx in the most recent scans ( found by Spybot, I think ).The current problem started a couple of days back when I was surprised to be taken to a different site when I clicked on a link in a list of results from a Google search ( as it happened, looking for reasons the computer was running slower than usual ).Thanks for any ideas to resolve this,John Williams.Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1Scan saved at 2:22:37 pm, on 27/10/06Platform: Windows 98 SE (Win9x 4.10.2222A)MSIE: Internet Explorer v5.51 SP2 (5.51.4807.2300)Running processes:C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\KERNEL32.DLLC:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSGSRV32.EXEC:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MPREXE.EXEC:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\mmtask.tskC:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSTASK.EXEC:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\KB891711\KB891711.EXEC:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SSDPSRV.EXEC:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\KB918547\KB918547.EXEC:\WINDOWS\EXPLORER.EXEC:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SYSTRAY.EXEC:\WINDOWS\TPPALDR.EXEC:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL32.EXEC:\PROGRAM FILES\GRISOFT\AVG FREE\AVGCC.EXEC:\PROGRAM FILES\GRISOFT\AVG FREE\AVGEMC.EXEC:\PROGRA... Running Windows Vista and using Google Chrome. Now when I use Google for search and click on one of the search results it redirects to some other site, often another search result list which has some ip address as the web URL. If I hit back and go back to the Google Search results and click on the same link it will then go to the correct site.

Based on other posts I've seen, I ran Rkill, TDsskiller and then MalwareBytes all to no help. TDsskiller found a couple of items the first time.

Still having the same problem.

Where to go next?

Hello,

1. When I click a link in the search results produced by Google I am redirected to a page different than the one the search results are supposed to take me to. When I click back sometimes it takes to another page instead of the search results. If I click back twice, then I can get back to the search results. After the first click back it usually takes me to site that is a domain name space holder. This situation is random and I'm not sure how frequently it happens. It happens in firefox and chrome.

2. Sometimes when I click a link on a site including this site, a random site will pop-up in another tab.

3. All of these pages appear to be random sites and I cannot tell if there is a pattern.

4. I ran Malware Bytes and Super AntiSpyware yesterday and they found some issues that were dealt with, but the problems (1 & 2) persist.

Thank you for your help in advance.

For about the last two weeks, I have had occasional problems when I click on a website link.  When I click on a link, about 25% of the time, I get redirected to the website suggestions page of my local ISP.  When I try to click on the link on the website suggestions page, the same page reloads.

This problem is happening with many different links and it's happening on all three of the browsers I use on this computer-Firefox 27.0.1, IE 8.0 and AOL 9.0.  The problem is happening only on this computer.  I am running Windows XP on this computer.

I have run updated scans using Spybot Search and Destroy and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware in the last couple days.  I also did a system restore, going back two weeks, which was about when the problem started, but that didn't help.

I even called my ISP and they couldn't help me when I described the problem to them.

Thanks

Hello,

I'm visiting my parents' house and I am trying to fix their computer problem but definitely need some assistance.

The problem: When doing a search for anything, if I click on a link, I get re-directed to another site. For example, I was searching for a fix to print an adobe file in reader 9.1 but when I clicked on the first link, I was re-directed to the AARP website. This happens in Firefox and IE.

The computer is a Compaq Presario running Windows XP.

I had run the Malwarebytes program prior to coming to this site. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I've attached the DDS, Rootrepeal, and HJT logs. Thanks again.

First time poster, so sorry if I don't follow all the protocols. I hope to provide all the information:

Approximately three weeks ago, my google search capability on Firefox became erratic - taking me to ad sites (primarily) but sometimes citysearch or yellow pages, and rarely it worked. (I also had my yahoo hacked into around the same time - after changing my password it has not happened again.)

I installed McAfee and it detected 47 problem files which it cleaned, but the problem with google persisted.
I then ran Malwarebytes and it didn't find any problem programs either.
So, I uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled it, and I still have the problem.
As much of my work is based on google searches, any help would be appreciated. I can work around the problem by clicking on the cached button in the search, but would love a fix since it's obvious there is some malware.

I have a Toshiba laptop with Windows Vista Home Edition, running Office 2007 and Firefox 3.6.
Let me know what if any additional information you need - your help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks

I want to be careful in wording this post. I am not sure but I think that a link at this web site led me to a site that tried to hijack my computer. I put up a post in the Operating Systems forum for Windows XP. The post was title "editing startup & restarting in safe mode" A reply was posted with links to a few sites with start up manager programs. I clicked on the 1st and then the 3rd link. The screen said that I was being redirected because the site had been moved. Then my screen went white. I could not close out the program, even tried the cnntrol-alt-delete method. No luck. So I manually shut down the computer. Then when I restarted, Windows Firewall warned me that a program was trying to gain access to my computer. I clicked "block". Then my Webroot Antivirus with antispyware program warned me that a program was trying to infect (might have used a different word) my computer. I checked "do not allow". Then I ran a full virus/spyware scan. I had done this just four days ago and the computer was clean except for the usual cookies. While the scan was running, a screen poped up saying I had been infected and I needed to download a program to clean the computer. It was not the webroot screen and it looked like one of those "fake spyware screens" put on by malicious programs to fool a computer user. I used ctrl-alt-dele and ended task on that program, which was called "sysguard". When webroot finished it's scan, it ha... Read more

Hello...  I have a problem.

Using Windows 7.

Within browser (Chrome), I can do a search, and then when I click one of the links, I am redirected to a different site... Siteadvisor jumps and asks if this is what I want to do.  Multiple windows would open.

What I did:

-  Uninstalled Chrome
-  Ran full scan with McAfee... nothing.
-  Run full scan with Malewarebytes... nothing.
-  Run scan with DoctorWeb... found three items... had them neutralized

After doing this, IE worked fine... search / link / no issue

Downloaded Firefox... tested... search / link / no issue

Downloaded Chrome... test... search / link... problem resurfaced!

Right now, I have removed Chrome again and running DoctorWeb again.

Other possibilities?

Thanks!

A:Browser Link - Redirect to Different Site

Uninstall Chrome completely.

Close all Chrome windows and tabs.
Go to the Start menu > Control Panel. (Windows 8 users: Learn how to access the Control Panel)
Click Programs and Features.
Double-click Google Chrome.
Click Uninstall from the confirmation dialog. Delete your user profile information, like your browser preferences, bookmarks, and history, by selecting the "Also delete your browsing data" checkbox.

Hi - first I must say thanks for the help previously in trying to help resolve this issue. I don't think I was able to be specific enough in previous troubleshooting with the experts here on bleepingcomputer.com but now I have more information. Also, for some reason I stopped receiving email to indicate a response was left for me. For a reference, see http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/104537/redirected-websites-and-desired-website-link-wont-open/for the previous string. As an answer to the last question in this earlier troubleshooting string, the two files that were asked about do not appear in the view of C:ProgramFiles so perhaps that is causing the trouble. As for a specific website that I am having difficulty with - www.dealnews.com which is a website that I like to check almost daily. About 25% of the time, I cannot access the website that a link on dealnews is supposed to take me to. For example, one of the items listed is "Guess Men's Miami Easy Fit 32" Jeans" which has a link of http://dealnews.com/lw/artclick.html?2,192689,416866When I click on the text which activates that link, I get the error screen "Unable to Connect...Firefox cannot establish a connection to the server at clickserve.cc-dt.com." When I launch Microsoft Explorer, I get a similar message in that it is not able to connect either.FYI, I have uninstalled all of the spyware and virus protection recommended by bleepingcomputer just to see if anything changed...it didn't so I've re-installed... There is another couple that we play cards with at times. We like music playing in the background. I don't know if this can be done or not, but what I want to do, is if there is a certain youtube link that plays music, we would like to just click on the desktop icon rather than look for it each time and have it to directly to the music we want.

A:putting a web site link on my desktop

Open Internet Explorer and go to a video you like on Youtube. Now simply drag the little icon to the left of the URL over onto somewhere your Desktop.

To test it, close Internet Explorer, then double-click the new icon on your Desktop. Doing so should open Internet Explorer and take you directly to that Youtube page.

Should I download the drivers that are offered from this website ????

Thanks for all of your help.

A:Is this website/link a Legit. Win.8 site

DON'T! I downloaded that, Extracted the files with z-zip - It will install ALL kinds of malicious CRAP and CACK into your system.

Just use Windows update to download new drivers, and use GeForce Experience to download new Video drivers - DONT USE crap programs like this.

I have setup a Site-to-Site VPN using Sophos UTM at each end. I set up an Ubuntu VM as a WINS Server using Samba.

So far so good. VPN Works.

My problem is with the WINS Server. I have taken two Windows 10 computers and for both of them added the IP of the WINS server under Advanced TCP/IP Settings and changed NetBIOS to Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.

The results are close but not quite right. The two computers with the modified settings can now ping each other using computer name rather than IP. Other computers on each end of the VPN can not do that.

That said neither computer shows up in the Networks of the other. This is what I am trying to fix.

It appears that name resolution is working for the computers that check in with the WINS server but that the Windows 10 browsing service is not adding those computers to the network.

The LANs are 192.168.2.0/24 and 10.1.1.0/24 the WINS server is on 192.168.2.0/24 and it comes back as __MSBROWSE__ for that network. For 10.1.1.0/24 the computer that connects to the WINS server is showing __MSBROWSE__ when I check with nbtstat.

When I check services Computer Browser is running.

Can someone help me or at least point me in the right direction? This really shouldn't be this hard so I feel like I'm missing something obvious.

Dear Friend,
I am Anil from India. I have recently joined the forum after struggling for a week to stablise my unstable PC. I used to have some Anti Virus software on my pc before few years. But since last few years I was not having any AV software as this PC was not being used for surfing etc.
Since I started to use it again for surfing, downloading etc., I wanted to instal avast AV software. I installed it from some recent installer file with me. But when it tried to update the virus database, I got the message that "can't connect to server". Then I tried to open avast.com. But I again got the error message "The page cannot be displayed". Then I uninstalled the avast and tried to open other antivirus sites like norton, mcafee, avg etc., but all failed.
Then I tried to update my system using automatoc update utility. But again failed. microsoft.com also failed to open.
I use GPRS connection through cellular connection to browse the network.
Now I have downloaded and installed Hijack This.

Also, some web sites will present and audio "story" which cannot be paused or stopped (unless you close the page). Is there a way to fix this?

Thank you.......

Hi Guys,

I've done a fair amount of googling before referring myself to W10 Forums.. I hope this helps someone else in the process. Since rolling out Windows 10 we've noticed users are having difficulty accessing their personal user data drives, via File Explorer. Let me make a scenario which is understandable.

In Site 1 (HQ), we can connect to the file server (e.g access 1FS without any issues- Where user data is stored)
In the remote site (Site 2), we can do the same (e.g 2FS)

At our HQ, when running Windows 7, we are able to File Explore to 2FS but since the upgrade we're unable to. This occurs both ways.

We can ping our servers, and remote desktop.

Server infrastructure:
VMWare ESX 5
File servers in question are Windows Server 2008
ONLY Windows server 2008 R2 servers have the issue, (2008 Standard edition is fine) all patches have been applied via WSUS.

Can anybody shed any light on this?

Thanks in advance,

IT Apprentice

I may not have this under the correct section and please keep in mind that I am not a programmer but here goes.

I am trying to add a hyperlink in Outlook 2007 signature file that will open a child site, but the child site seems to need some personalized information in the cache that comes from opening a parent site first:

Parent site: http://www.mywildtree.com/chad/
Child Site: http://www.mywildtree.com/shop/catalog.aspx

When the child site is opened directly (without opening parent first) it loads forever. The parent site does not require any authenication it just has to be opened first and then the child site operates correctly.

Is there a simple way to have one hyperlink either a) open two sites one after the other in the same window? or b) open the childsite with a parent site dependancy (tag?, bookmark?) on the hyperlink?

I have been on google searching all afternoon and haven't had any luck yet so any help is appreciated.

Thank you

A:Hyperlink syntax to open a parent site and then child site

Welcome to Seven Forums chadseeg. The Shop Now link shows as actually being http://www.mywildtree.com/shop/preshop.aspx, and this appears to redirect to http://www.mywildtree.com/shop/catalog.aspx.

Firefox blames the redirection

It looks like the script on the page is written to specifically prevent going directly to the shopping catalog without going through the home page. I'm not a webmaster, so I am unsure if this is intentional or not. A Guy

Hi, I'm a complete network newb, but am helping out a Montessori school with their issues. Hopefully someone can help.
Site A has the main WAN link coming in to a Cisco 1841 router, then going to a Sonicwall appliance, then to a 24 port unmanaged switch.
There is also a point to point link to site B. This has another Cisco 1841 router on each end of the link. At site A, it's also plugged into the 24 port switch, and plugged into another 24 port switch at site B. There is a DC with DNS and DHCP at site A, and a DHCP server at Site B. Site A's IP achema is 192.168.1.x, and site B is 192.168.2.x, with subnet masks of 255.255.255.0. The circuit sides of the point to point connection is 10.0.0.1 & 2.
The problem they've been having for the last month or so is that the connection at site B would drop all together, or be very slow and sporadic. Yesterday, I tried downloading a 4mb file from the internet, and couldn't get the whole thing, even after trying for an hour, it kept timing out.
Downloading the same file from site A, I was done in 20 seconds.

Here's the wierd part. If I do a tracert from site A to site B's server, it sometimes works, meaning it'll trace in a couple hops to the server. When it doesn't, it tries to route out over the internet, with the first hop being a 162.42 address, which is the service provider.

Century Link says the point-to-point T1 circuit is fine, but am reaching out to see if anyone can give me a hand... Read more

Hello all,

Good to join this forum

Anyway, Please can someone support me regarding connecting a Windows Server 2008 standard that needs to connect to another Windows server in another country outside of UK (Site B). The ports 1433 and 3030 are also open in the firewall and also the Draytek 2830n router, therefore I can see the ports open via yougetsignal.com. We have 1 public (Static) IP address from BT that is already in the Draytek router on Site A (UK).

How is the simplest or easiest way to connect these 2 Window servers so a management program that uses MySQL Database server can talk to the Site B server or vice-versa) Both sites have a Public IP address.

Can this be done by the WIndows firewall inbound rules / outbound rules where the port 1433 is set. There is an option to enter a Remote IP address under 'scope' which I assume is the Site B's public IP address within the inbound firewall properties.

The other way is the VPN on the Draytek 2830n. There is an option for Lan to Lan using IPSec but not sure the best settings for Dial-out or Dial-in. There is usernames and passwords that not sure of including the Remote gateway or Remote IP to use

We have 2 different routers on Site A and Site B are not the same.

Thanks Guys
