I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've had my notebook since September 2014. On 15 or so occasions since then, I've touched the notebook and have received a static shock either from the edge of the casing, the mousepad, or the keys. When this happens, my notebook turns off completely and immediately; there's no graceful power down, there's no message saying why it's turning off, the screen just turns black and the PC just shuts down completely. Any unsaved work is lost when this happens. It's not a pleasant experience, to say the least, not only because of the shock itself, but also because I'm never sure when my notepad is just going to turn off whenever I touch it. Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

Ok so i opened the computer case with motherboard and everything installed when i touched the computer case *left side* i had a static shock and now it wont turn on!
so my question is which part of the computer does the static shock damage? is it the motherboard?

also does bad ram memory cause black screen when bootup?

Reply Route44: no i didnt touch the motherboard directly i touched the left side of the computer case and now it wont turn on...

A:Static shock on the computer?

Bad memory can cause all kinds of issues but static electricity can literally fry a motherboard. Weird I know but true. However, the whole idea of touching the case is to ground yourself so that those static charges don't affect your board.

Is this a new build? Did you touch the board directly?

I have a  new, well 2 month old elitebook, cost 3000 dollars, could have got cheaper but wanted a reliable laptop!  The other day it woul not turn on, i tired and tried. I got a quick flash of the hp icon and the press escape to... (not long enough to read whole message) and then off it turned. Called HP support. The remote accessed and todl me to hold down speaker nd power 30 seonds and release. Repeat for 15 seconds and release. I did it and it worked, fantastic. Only one issue, it only lasts from 2 minutes to maybe 30 max and switches off losing whatever I am doing.    Today I made 3 attempt to write and send an emai, as it turned of after about 1.5 minutes in mid action. Lucky it has bow been on long enough for this. This is not a now and then, this is an EVERY single day!  and many many times a day.  They told me it happened due to static charge but I dont know that I buy it ie I am in a nursing home, I am in bed 24 /7, why would it be that and why so constant?

First thing I would check is clogged fans or Ram covered in dirt causing overheat and shut down.
Next, Power supply. Pretty cheap. See if you can switch it with another.

This is my first time ever building a computer, so I have no idea what's wrong here.

My computer keeps turning back on immediately after shutting down.  I have tried many fixes but none of them are working.
I went to the command prompt window and typed in "powercfg -lastwake", it didn't find anything.  I also typed in "powercfg -devicequery wake_armed".  It only displayed NONE.  I checked if there were any wake timers active, but there aren't any.  I've made it so that my mouse, keyboard and network adapter can't wake the computer.  I also had a look through the BIOS, and it doesn't look like wake on lan is active.
I have no idea what to do.  Please help!
My specs are:
motherboard: Asus Sabertooth 990fx r2.0
Processor: amd fx-8350
Ram: 16gb
OS: windows 8.1 64 bit
If any additional specs are required, let me know. Thank you in advance.

Hi, I hope someone can help me. I have a Yoga 730-15 IKB and from time to time during winter I'd get static shocks when touching the metal casing of the laptop. Yesterday I was writing a paper and I had an insight and ran to my laptop. But when I touched the keyboard it got a static shock, after that the computer went off (though the fans span really fast for a second). Now it won't turn on anymore. I had the computer connected to Lenovo's original power supply (I rent a room, but I suppose the electrical outlet is grounded -- it does have the third hole for the 3 pins). I tried holding the power button for 10 seconds and releasing, I also tried pressing the Novo button. And now when the power supply is connected to the laptop there's no led light indicating that. I'm a student and I don't have another $1000 to spend for a laptop. Could the motherboard have been fried by a simple static shock? Or am I missing something? The 1 year warranty ended less than a month ago, but even if I still had it, I need my data. Is this supposed to happen?? I mean, I can't believe that a static shock could kill it, the metal cast was closed and the only change I made to it was adding 8 gb RAM many months ago. Thanks a lot for any help in solving this!

I live in Malaysia, and in my house there is one PC with an old fashion CRT monitor, and one laptop a DELL Inspiron bought in 2001.

the monitor screens of both this computers shocks anyone that touches them. both of them are in the same house.

is there a way to reduce the static on these 2 computers?
will a humidifier help?
or it is essentially a problem with the monitors being old? from what i learn the newer computers are designed to reduce static.

thank you!

A:Static Shock on monitor screens

If your outlets are not properly grounded, static can build up on the crt as a result of the high voltage it uses to suck electrons to the front.
In most cases; however, static is built up in the individual due to carpetting and what is on that persons feet ( the soles of some shoes are great static generators ) If this is true, you also get zapped by things like switchplates or bare metal on appliances. The best test is an antistatic carpet spray.

So this fateful night.. my friend came home.. removed his jacket.. with lots of static at hand, he moved to turn on his desktop. With a plan to send thunder bolts all across his system.. he touched the power button.. he got a static shock but did not get a chance to actually press the button.. the machine turned itself on.. we all went ?WWHHOOOAAAAHH?.

2 seconds later.. the machine turned itself off automatically and has now been declared dead. It is not responding to the power button either.

Thoughts?
Suggestions?

Tried a different power supply..
Tried switching the Power and Reset connections..
Tried resetting the CMOS..

A:Static Shock To The Power Button

Your friend most likely fried something on the motherboard. (And showed that your computer case has a lousy design).

What is the system doing now? Doesn't turn on?

What if you try to turn it on by shorting the green wire from the PSU with ground (any black wire)? This would bypass the power-on stuff on the motherboard.

I recently had a intersting experence with a system. I know all about ESD and am very carefull to discharge myself even before working on a system in normal eviroment (aka covers in place using it as a workstataion). And of course I am always grounded when I work inside a system.
Now here is the interesting part, while I was sliding into my chair, my knee accidently came close to the towers metal casing. I felt the static shock and my system bluescreened. A power cycle later everything was fine, and no problems since. Now my question is do I have a gound failure somewhere? Or something else? I know this can't be good for my system (and I am afrade it took years of useful life off of it...if not more) and as I said never had this happen before as I am very careful. In all the years I have worked on systems I have never had this happen before.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Perhaps just ground the casing of the tower directly?

While they don't seem to affect programs, every time they happen, my monitor will black out for a second, and a popping sound can be heard through the speakers or headphones. Usually these shocks come when plugging things in, but also when I change the volume on my external speakers. My initial thought was the speakers, but it also happens with headphones. Can't really find much online about this kind of issue, so any help would be appreciated!

My laptop was purchased one year ago and it had been working fine until lately I have been experiencing frequent static shocks up to 3-4 times a day when using it during the past week. I called the HP customer support team and I was told that such situation is completely normal and they refused to have a check on my laptop.  While I agree that an occasional static shock might possible be normal when using an eletric device, I don't think frequent static shock is normal at all. In fact, in all my years of using computers of various brands, including Lenovo, SONY vaio, Dell, I have never experienced things like that. I don't understand how the customer support team managed to find an excuse like that. I doubt that the HP sales team would dare to tell a customer that it is normal that HP product releases static shocks up to 3-4 times a day. If they say so, no one would ever consider buying the product because it is not normal, not safe, and not comfirtable using a product like that. Also, I have been using my HP laptop for a year already. It hadn't had such issues until recently. So I believe there must be something wrong with it and I consulted the IT service department of my university, Currys PC world knowhow team in store, and a local computer repair service company. Three times within the last 5 weeks my computer turned off after receiving a static shock from my finger. One time I was able to push the power button and get it to turn back on. However the other times the computer has died completely and shows no lights. Once I had to take it somewhere for them to take out the battery and reseat it and then it seem to work. The other  just happened so I have not had the opportunity to see if that same thing will fix it . This does not seem normal to me especially since I've had the computer for two-and-a-half years and this has just started happening. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

This morning I came to my computer and it had a BSOD from my wireless adapter driver. This has happened a few times before. But when I turned it off and tried to turn it back on, it wont start! As soon as I press the power button, the lights flash and the fans get one jolt of power causing them to spin and die out immediately and then everything stops in under a seccond. What could be causing this? I did add a new new hard drive to my computer yesterday, but it has restarted fine a few times since then, and unplugging it didn't fix the problem. Other than that, I can't think of anything that is different that would be causing this. Any ideas?

Hi there, internet,

I'm having some issues with my Compaq Presario C762NR laptop. It's a couple years old.

Anyway, recently I'm having two issues that may or may not be related.

Issue one: On the slightest of physical shocks (say, putting the computer down onto a desk) the screen can go black. This isn't "completely unlit-computer-is-off black," this is "screen-is-backlit-black." The computer is unresponsive and the only way I can get back online is by holding the power button down until it turns off and then turning it back on.

Issue two: Occasionally, when I set my laptop down, I'll feel a slight static electric shock (usually discharged near the left USB port). The screen will then go crazy. It looks like lines of multi-colored pixels. Again, the only thing I can do to get my computer up and running is doing a hard-reset.

Third potentially related issue I just remembered: Occasionally, when I try to turn on my computer, the display won't turn on. the power and hard drive LED lights turn on, and I can hear the hard drive spinning, but the screen doesn't turn on. I usually turn it off by holding the power button and then turn it on again. Usually this works, but sometimes I have to do the hard-reboot three or four times before the screen actually comes on with the computer.

Please help me! I desperately need my computer and I do not have the money to replace it right now. I want advice!!!

Late night I was in bed, then I remembered that I needed to pay a bill that was due the next day. So I jump out of bed, and right to my PC. I reach for the power button with my static charged finger, unawares, and get a shocking surprise. I didnt actually press the button, but the PC fired up anyway...only to power down 3 seconds later. So I ground myself (too late), and press the power button. Nothing..no response.
Next I open the case and press the power button on the mobo...no response. The power and reset button on the mobo are lit up btw. So then I unplug my power cord from the psu, wait for the pc to drain completely, then plug the cord back in. Right when I plug the power cord back in the pc fires up, then dies 3 seconds later.
I've tried:
-shorting out the battery
-resetting cmos
-screwdriver to the case power pin
-bench test
All with the same result.
Heres my hardware:
CASE: Thermaltake MK-I Chaser
CPU: Intel Core i7 2600k @ 3.4GHz
GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 580 3GB
MOBO: Asus P8Z68V PRO/GEN3
MEM: Corsair Vengeance 16GB DDR3-1600 (4x4)
SSD: Crucial M4 128GB
HDD: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB
Windows 7 Home
Dont know what to do next. I bought everything in February of 2012, so everything should be under warranty if qualified.
Thanks in advance.

Hi, There seems to be a problem with the power management on my T570. I have two batteries, and I think the main one to be used is the battery 2. Sometimes, I'll be working unplugged, and my computer randomly turns off. Not the usual "Windows turning off" sequence, but an immediate blackout with no feedback. When I turn the computer back on, I see that Battery 2 is at 0% and Battery 1 is now in use. It does seem to be a problem in the power management, no? Thank you,Fred

Sounds like power management or battery reporting status wrong.  Are you still under warranty? If yes, call support first.  Can you get (borrow) another battery to try?

Hello, I have an HP DV2715nr and when I turn it on, it turns right of, some times it stays on for 1 second or 3 or even 5, but it never goes to bios unless it turns on right so there's nothing i can do software wise until it works. The fan always turns on and the lights, and the light to the hard drive. It does the same thing without the hard drive and it never goes into bios. It will eventually turn on right and when it does, it runs fine and never turns off unexpectedly. The only error I get is when I run the resource and performance monitor: The devise, adfs, is reporting "tv_ConfigMgrErr24". This device will not be available until the issue is resolved. The Plug and Play Id for the devise is ROOT\LEGACY_ADFS\0000.

The last thing i remember doing when it was working correctly was deleting my XP partition from my Win7/XP dual boot.

Install a new drive using your HP System restore disk set.
You may be able to rescue some of the date by placing the drive in an external USB enclosure then dragging and dropping the critical data that was not in the partition you damaged.
If you don't need the data on the defective drive, and do not have a restore disk set, you can buy the restore disks from HP for $27 - $35, depending on number of disks, including FedEx shipping... or using a Windows XP Professional disk in R for Repair mode...
You might also be able to run Windows 7 disk in repair mode, although I have not tried that.

I recently got a new motherboard and processor. Installed them fine w/o any problems. Haven't run into an error or anything yet. Got my USB ports and such opened fine, but I'm running into a really annoying issue now.

I use Ventrilo to talk to friends, and 2-5 minutes through every session, they hear a very loud static come from my mic, like turning on an unsubscripted channel on TV and maxing the volume apparently. Whenever I leave Vent and come back, or change one Ventrilo setting, it fixes. I figured that it was Vent, so I used xFire's voice chat, and apparently it still does it there.

My drivers are 'High Definition Realtek Audio Drivers' apparently, and I've tried two different kinds now that came on my motherboard disc, but the problem still exists. Tried another USB port and same thing.

If anyone can help it would be appreciated.

I have tried uninstalling and both restating the computer multiple times. i have tried update the drivers both automatically and manually multiple times. NOTHING HAS FIXED THE PROBLEM!! I don't think it has to do with the drivers at all. the only way i have been able to get a temporary solution is to restart the computer. i don't now how to fix the problem and am hoping someone here can help. PLEASE.

My pc died the otehr day, turn it on and just get a quick 1 second flash of the hp icon and turns off. I called hp support who did a log me in resuce ie accessed by remote. They told me hold down the power and speaker key at the same time for 30 seconds, release, wait till power light goes out and repeat for 15 seconds. Then trun on. Worked brilliantly. They told me it was due to static charge???? a two month old three thousand dollar laptop?  issue is it, althought it fixed the issue, it doesnt stay on!  sometimes it stays on for lik an hour, like now for isntance it has lasted 20 minutes - oh a misracle, but generally I will have to go through that whole process about 3 to 4 times within a few mintues, jsut to get one email type and sent! ie it sometimes does it constantly ie turns off every 2 minutes or so. This is not a rare even, I mean this is daily. What the hec is static charge and are HP just smoothing things over??? what causes it

I am so puzzled with this problem I have. I have Windows xp: Service Pack 3, and when I open Windows Internet Explorer 8, It turns white and closes almost immediately after I open it, or i'll open it and it'll turn white and stay like that for almost 10 minutes straight and do nothing. I tried resetting it in control panel, and it didn't help at all. Why doesn't it----referring to my browser;Windows Internet Explorer, work?

A:Windows Internet Explorer 8 turns white and closes almost immediately after i open it

If IE works properly when you start it without add-ons then it's possible that you could have an infection, but try these two MS fixits in this order first -

Fix Internet Explorer issues to make IE fast, safe and stable

Fix Internet Explorer add-on problems when IE hangs or freezes

After getting a couple blue screens I am having the following issue:

When I turn my computer on, the fans and drives all start up. After approx. 2 seconds the computer shuts itself off. After another 2 seconds the computer turns itself back on again. This time it stays on but i have no monitor output. I don't hear a beep which tells me it is probably not posting.

I have read a few other threads that have a similar issue but not the same. I am thinking it is either the mobo, GPU, or PSU.

I would like any guidance and assistance that you guys can give me on this specifically what i should look at first and how to diagnose. Thanks. system specs below:

ASUS P5Q Pro ATX Intel Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 3.16GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor
EVGA GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 896-P3-1265-AR Video Card
Antec EA650 650W Power Supply
OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Memory

A:Computer turns on, turns off then turns back on but has no video output

Motherboard Short

I have helped somebody who had a similar issue and it was the motherboard being shorted out by the case. We took the motherboard out of the case and it booted up just fine. Something you might want to try before purchasing new components.

Hi, is it possible to set credits/continues to unlimited (also known as free play) in the Wii Virtual Console versions of Shock Troopers & Shock Troopers 2nd Squad ? I emailed Nintendo about the question in this post, and the customer service representative that replied to my email mentioned that Shock Troopers & Shock Troopers 2nd Squad do not require credits to play. However, in a video review of the Wii Virtual Console version of Shock Troopers, I noticed that a limited number of credits were displayed on screen instead of free play, and judging from what the reviewer said, it seemed that the game didn't feature free play. I contacted SNK about the question in this post, and I haven't received a reply from them even though I added them to my contacts list and I emailed them twice. Also, with some Wii Virtual Console games such as the arcade version of Space Harrier, there's a menu outside of the game that allows you to change settings in the game, and I was wondering if such a feature was included in the Wii Virtual Console Versions of Shock Troopers & Shock Troopers 2nd Squad and if it was possible to enabled free play that way.

A:Solved: unlimited credits/continues in Shock Troopers & Shock Troopers 2nd Squad ?

I'm not able to confirm this firsthand, but I recently found out that Shock Troopers and Shock Troopers 2nd Squad don't have unlimited credits/continues.

I just got this notebook for Christmas and with the exception of one ded cell on the HP boot screen I really do not have any complaints...except 1.  When I touch the computer keyboard area I get a shock and it shuts down immediately.  I have been using a rubber glove to try to stop it  and it has helped but is still an issue.  I am just afraid that one time when it does this it will never turn back on or will not boot correctly.  I looked at the archived posts for this issue but they are several years old.  Is the resolution still the same?  I wanted to make sure I got this addressed as soon as possible.

From the first moment I bought the computer and first started it up it has made a constant static noise. I didn't think much of it at first but it is very annoying and I would like to know how to fix it. I had to take a test with it in class and it was so loud that it affected me and other people around me. I need to know how to fix it fast or I will have to do a return. The sound is constant and only stops when the computer is in sleep mode or off. I'm not great with computers so I would like to know how to fix it soon. Thanks.
