Cannot boot T480 from USB

Q: Cannot boot T480 from USB

Hi,New T480 user, with a new T480.I have a USB that I want to boot from for a temporary Linux session.I did the following:(1) Placed the USB key into the USB port(2) Restarted laptop(3) selected "Enter" when the red Lenovo logo starts on restart(4) selected the "boot from external device" option on the menu that appears(5) On the next menu that appears, I can see my USB key listed, but when I select it and press enter, nothing happens. It just stays on the same menu.I have tried this several times, restarting from both my admin account, and my windows account (I have these separate for security purposes), but cannot get it to work.Any suggestions? Thanks in advance

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a remote user who cannot get into her laptop this morning. The Lenovo homew screen comes up for a log time, then it says going into Boot manager but the only thing available in the Boot Menu is "PCI Lan".  I had her go to the APP Menu and run the diagnostics but everything seemed to pass.  We tried resetting the PC using a paperclip, tried getting into the Boot manager on startup using F2 and it doesn't do anything but go in a continuous loop of rebooting and only getting to the Lenovo screen and sometimes into this virtually empty Boot manage. Any help is appreciated, laptop is less than 6 months old.

It sounds like your disk or SSD has died and does not respond at power up.  Assuming you have a normal warranty, call support.  In U.S. it is 1-800-426-7378

I bought a T480 with an HDD, but I've since bought a Samsung 960 Evo and installed it into the laptop bay, and I want to clone the HDD to the SSD by booting from the HDD externally, but that doesn't work. I'm using a Sabrent USB 3.0 hard drive adapter kit to power and connect the HDD externally. I looked around for solutions just can't boot the HDD externally, even after going to BIOS and disabling secure boot and changing UEFI/legacy boot option to both.

A:T480 can't boot from external HDD?

Usually one must format the SSD before use, then connect it with a USB adapter to clone the existing HDD to it.

Steps that I employ...

Purchase SSD
Read SSD user guide, download manufacture software
Format SSD using manufacture software
hookup SSD to target computer via USB (notebook) or SATA (desktop)
Clone HDD to SSD via manufacture software / thrid party software
Verify information on SSD matches HDD
Remove HDD, replace with SSD
Boot the computer (notebook) verify installation / cloning works
Store HDD in safe location (as back up device)

This procedure works 99% of the time, but there is always the 1% that I have to work around otherwise.

Good luck.

Hello,I have a problem with my brand new T480.It is a campus model upgraded to 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD.Today, I installed Windows 10 without problems and updated the bios (1.12).After severals reboots I recognized, after the Lenovo boot logo,is a delay with approximately 30 seconds until the Windows 10 boot icon appears. During the delay there is only in the left corner a blinking underscore. I changed boot order and activated diagnostic boot.I see directly after the boot informations for <1sec the message "Thinkvantage active protection sensor diagnostics start." (I don't know if this is normal.) Then again the delay of 30seconds, until Windows 10 boots. I downgraded bios back to 1.11. Still same problem.I installed debian but still the delay. Also I set the bios to default values. Is the hardware damaged?

Germany is a long distance from San Francisco, and I cannot be sure without seeing the machine, but I can say that a bad SSD can act like you describe.

When I upgraded to a P51 a year ago, I was a able to change a BIOS setting to Legacy and my previous T510 Win 10 Pro system SSD booted right up via USB on the P51?with that established I then physically installed it as the internal C-drive, smoothest laptop upgrade I?ve ever had.Now I want to do the same thing?use my existing system from the P51 in the T480?but I can?t get it to boot from a T480 USB?unable to find anything in BIOS to let it boot.So I then even physically installed the P51 SSD in place of the new factory internal T480 SSD just in case it was some USB unique issue, but it still wouldn?t boot up.Hoping someone has first-hand experience / knowledge / resolution for this, thanks a lot.

I have a new T480 with a 512 PCI-e M.2 SSD, i7-8650u, 32GB of RAM... but it takes 35-40 seconds to boot from pressing the power button to the login screen, which is much slower than my 4-5 year old ThinkPad with much inferior hardware. When the red Lenovo screen appears at boot, it stays here for a long while before reaching the login screen. Any thoughts?

Hi All, First, thanks in advance for bearing with my ineptitude and noobness when it comes to computers! Just got a new T480 - i5 vpro.  It came with 16gb ram and an M.2 256gb hard drive w/ Windows 10.  It booted up fine and I set up the computer no problem.  The laptop I had before this one was a T460 that was running fine with a Sata3 Samsung 860 EVO 1tb hard drive and Windows 10.  All my work and stuff is on that HD and I wanted to just simply transfer it over to the T480.  I took it out, ordered the SATA adapter cable for the T480, and when the adapter arrived, swapped HDs with no physical problem. The problem, however, was once I booted up the T480 with my old 1tb HD, it won't boot.  It keeps getting stuck on a Boot Menu/App Menu, Windows Boot Manager screen (see attached picture).  I tried continuing the booting process by selecting each of those options (windows boot manager, ATA HDD0, and PCI LAN) but each time, it ends up back at the same screen.  If I leave the computer on that screen, it will after a delay keep trying to boot and each time coming back to that screen.  The other picture is something else I will see pop up momentarily during the attempted boot process. I called Lenovo factory support but after speaking to two of the reps (I got disconnected while on hold with the first one), the conversatiosn didn't leave me with a very confident feeling abou... One possibility is that you you have a non UEFI setup on the SSD and secure boot is turned on.  In the BIOS, under security, turn off secure boot.  Under the startup tab, select both/legacy first.

Also, if you are running windows 7, it isn't supported on T480

Even if I exit out from it, it comes back to this screen. The only workaround is to force a reboot. I'm recent with both lenovo and windows update and ran lenovo diagnostics but everything comes out ok. Reset the BIOS settings to default as well. But to no avail. Setting the boot priority to my SSD first does nothing as well.

T440-T480 Connected to Aten KVM deck won't show pre-OS Boot display when connected to HDMI/Mini-DP unless I change the bios setting in display to boot to anything other than "Lenovo Thinkpad LCD".  Changing this bios setting on every machine that gets built out at this company isn't necessarily an option, or at least not the first one we want to take (for multiple reason I'll spare you from here).   So, is there any other way to get them to display this way that doesn't require a bios change? Much the same way that they would display the boot screen when docked and started up, they should do the same thing when connected to HDMI/Mini-DP and started up.

Hi,Recently bought a T480 with the 150MX Nvidia card. The laptop works great during normal operation during work etc but when I get home and want to play some games, nothing is working as it should. What happens is this:When I start the game everything is running good but after a few minutes I can see my CPU start to lower it's power limit (PL1) slowly towards 5W. It will stop at 5W never gaining any wattage back until i restart computer. The PL1 is at 15W when computer is newly booted. I have tried to uninstall the Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework, this results in that the processor is fixed at 15W but after a while the iGPU will go crazy and goes to 100% leaving the CPU at 2W = 0.2Ghz. And I have to restart. So this is not a valid solution. All my power settings are on maximum performance ofc.I have tried almost everything I can think of and been browsing all kind of reddit threads without any long term solution.

Hi everyone, today I upgraded the RAM and the SSD of my T480. I am absolutely not doing this for the first time and I was really careful. I removed the external battery and deactivated the internal battery before starting with the procedure. I used only ESD-safe tools and an ESD-wristband to make sure that the device doens't get damaged by static discharge. After installing the components, my device would no longer turn on. When I connect the charger, the power led flashes 3x but when I press the powervbutton nothing happens. No fan spin, no lights turning on, absolutly nothing.I then tried removing the RAM and the SSD and turning on the machine. But that didn't work as well. After that I tried removing all the power sources (internal and external battery, CMOS-battery), pressing the power button for 60 seconds and leaving the device for 1 hour before reconnecting everything. But it still can't turn it on. Do you guys have any idea what I could try to make my device work again? Thanks in advance. --resonance

I ordered a T480 with the Geforce MX150 option. Was surprised to see my delivered unit with Intel UHD 620 and simultaneously active with the Geforce GPU. The Intel GPU however is the default display adapter. Intel UHD 620 is active display adapterI've never quite seen this before. Desktop mainboard BIOS would typically disable the onboard GPU if slotted with an actual video card (leaving the OS blind to its presence), and all my previous laptops that I configured with a discrete GPU would have just that alone. Am I supposed to disable the UHD 620 in Device Manager in order to force the Geforce to take over? I don't see anything in the BIOS that can influence this (in fact it seems to suggest the UHD is in charge with its shared memory setting).

Hello all, Just received my sixth thinkpad in the last 23 years. It arrived yesterday.  It is a: T480, I7-8550U, 16GB(8+8), 512 M.2 SSD, iGPU, Win10 Pro The fan is really annoying.  It goes on and off constantly.  It seems to ramp up to full speed.  I have been reading about fan noise with this model all over the internet.  Is there a way for it to run constantly at a lower speed than the constant on and off?  My previous model was a T430 never had issues with fan noise (it was very quiet too when it ran). Currently running a test:  Not using the laptop at all.  Opened 1 tab on Chrome and have it sitting on cnn.com.  Also, opened one tab on Edge also on cnn.com.  Task manager open.  Chrome uses less CPU but more memory than Edge.  CPU is running between 15% and 20%.  Fan turns on every minute or so for about 20 to 30 seconds then goes off. It is loud and annoying going on and off.  Why can't it just be a constant lower speed?  On and off is ridiculous.  If this keeps up this machine is going back. Thanks for any replies and suggestions.

HelloAs many others have described in other posts, my trackpoint is not working. It sometimes works when I go into advanced boot options, and when I do a hard restart (unplug batteries, or reset bios to OS optimized defaults) it sometimes starts working again for a small period of time. Then it can stop working, either after a hibernation, but also just in the middle of using the computer. (I was watching netflix I think when that happened)What is the best cause of action?Everybody seems to agree, that it is a BIOS issue, as the problem often persists to other OS's.I would rather not open my computer, however I can and have done that in the past with other thinkpads. If I send it in to lenovo, what will they do to fix it there? And can I just do that from home, with a set of small screwdrivers?

I have been having issues with my battery on my T480 lately. I will have the laptop running around 50% battery and sometimes try to restart it but when I do, the laptop will not power back up. The Lenovo bios screen will post but when the Windows 10 circle starts spinning the computer fully shuts itself off and loses power and I cannot turn it back on until I plug the charger in, but when Windows loads it says I have battery. Yesterday I was using the laptop and when it went from 50 to 49% battery the laptop fully died and shut off and would not power on again until I plugged in the charger, yet showed 49% battery when Windows loaded again. I have been working out in the cold with my laptop and I am not sure if that is or has affected it some how but I can't keep having these types of issues when I need to be able to use my computer in the field. I know Lenovo used to have a tool to reset and deplete and recharge the battery, does this still exist? I ran the diagnostic tool but it finished instantly saying both batteries were fine with a time on the diagnostic of 0 seconds. Not sure if there is another tool I can be using to try and get this working properly again.

I got a T480 today and it shows out that the dirve already been power on 106 times. I just got my new laptop today. I ordered it at Nov.14th and it is a T480 with 512G HDD.I opened my laptop, went through the guide, but when I ready to use, I noticed there are some films in my recycle bin that I never download. So i went to download a Crystaldiskinfo and found out that this drive's power on count is 106 count. I was gald with my new laptop. I was. Now, should I ask to change a new laptop or just ask for a new drive?

A:T480: New laptop, old drive.

You bought directly from Lenovo?

The latop is used.  If you bought as new, you would be justified in returning it.

Hi,Tried to search for a solution but results weren't clear.I recently received a T480 ThinkPad laptop for work and I need to connect two monitors with HDMI output into my laptop and then extend display across all 3 monitors. The laptop has a single HDMI input socket and I don't want to plug 1 monitor into the C-usb port and other into HDMI.I do not have a docking station and assuming I won't get one soon. Can someone suggest an adaptor or suitable product I can use, even better if you can include a link to the item!Thank you in advance,  Jack
