I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A:Excel 2013 crashes after opening and using any xls/xlsx file

Hi Rafales,

Please try start 'Excel' in 'Safe Mode' and check if it works. To start it in 'Safe mode automatically', click this link: http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9668693
- Click 'Run' in the 'File Download dialog box', and follow the steps in the 'Microsoft Fix it wizard'

If 'Excel' still does not work as expected, a conflict with another program is likely. Try to restart 'Windows' in 'Safe mode', and perform the previous steps again to run 'Excel in Safe mode'; and check results.

Do reply with the findings; will take it forward from there.

@VitorSoares Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! Most likely, the answer is no.  Files are linked blocks of data and if one or more of those blocks gets overwritten, the complete file can never be recovered. IF you're willing to spend some money, you could try using [email protected] Recovery Pro -- as I have found it to do the best job of recovering files.  But ... there is no guarantee that it will work.Good Luck

Hi!

Good day!

May I ask another way how to resolve my file problem,

"excel cannot open the file <filename>.xlsx because the file format or file extension is not valid. verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file."

I already try the "Open and Repair" method of MS Excel 2007 and still cannot open the file.
I cannot change the extension by renaming it. (I'm using Win7)
I already checked the associated file extension on control panel.
Thank you in advance!

A:EXCEL CANNOT OPEN .xlsx FILE

What version of Excel do you have?  Usually that error comes from Excel 2002.  You can upgrade to 2003 (MS Office 2003) at Amazon for $50 or less, and then download the free 'fileconverters.exe' from Microsoft, which enables an older MS Office to read the later files.

I know this, because it happens to me all the time, what happened to you.  So finally I took the plunge and upgraded to MS Office 2003, on all my machines.

The upgrade will accept all your customizations, macros, etc. so the interface looks the same, post upgrade, because it will import all your Normal.dot settings.  Difference is, that 'fileconverters.exe' will work in 2003, but not 2002.

.xlsx is Excel 2007 and later (secure, the extra 'x') format.  So I don't see how you'd get that error if you're really using 2007.  The only other possibility, is that someone password protected it, yet somehow you're not getting the password prompt.

I guess it's also possible that the file was generated by some other later version of MS Office which prohibits 2007 from reading it, but I can't see why.  This is just a very wild guess.

Hi there
on the download is there a SAVE AS option -- that might work if you change the default to .xls

Otherwise I think there are some xlsx viewers where you could view the file or change it to xls. (Note changing to xls will possibly remove some formatting etc).

Hi Expert
I formated my D drive but I have done by mistake. So I recover all data using Power Data Recovery  many file working ok but some Excel file corrupted and unable to open. How can I fix it?
Thanks!

A:Fix corrupted Excel xls or xlsx file after recovery

First try File | Open ... browse for the file, then click the dropdown triangle on the Open button and choose Open and Repair.  If it prompts, the "Repair" options is better, but if it fails, try again, choosing "Extract".
Then, check the size of the recovered file.  Is it likely all your data is included?  if so, you can try to access the data from the file without opening it by creating an external reference.  In cell A1 of a blank workbook, type a reference to the A1 cell of the corrupted workbook, following this format:
='C:\Folder\Path\[FileName.xlsx]SheeName'!A1
Beyond that, what is the file format?  There may be more options.  Lots of help here: https://community.office365.com/en-us/f/172/t/256362

Hi ..

I have a good quality of .png format image files of a nicely laid out table image. I used .png because of the higher, to me, image quality.

Wearing out Bing/Google searches has given me many suggestions of online converts to free/trial applications with all very inconsistent quality results, i.e.: not worth the effort .  I tested converting the .png to .pdf image and .jpg image files to accommodate testing a wider breadth of programs with same inconsistent, i.e.: useless results.  I have some 80-120 image files I'd like to convert.

Cost is always a consideration, but I did not go into this without thinking I might need to purchase a converter/OCR to .xlsx package. I cannot seem to find one that says it works. I DO except the ability to trial/test anything before purchase.

Ideas? Suggestions?

Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Let me know.

Hi

I converted a large addin from excel 2003 using DAO to access several workbooks.

Now using excel 2013.

The addin works in both Update and read-only modes. A 2nd user logging on will open the workbooks in read only mode automatically.

The conversion to 2013 went well but DAO will not work when the workbooks are opened in read-only mode. I get the error "external table is not in the expected format".

The exact same code works fine when the workbooks are opened in update mode.

Very puzzling - can anybody help?

I am really frustrated as I have a lot of users depending on the outcome. They have to continue using 2003 for the moment.

The line in the code that fails is ...

Set db = OpenDatabase(myfile, False, False, "Excel 8.0")

Hello,
We created an Excel shared file where multiple users can access it on the server, make any edits, then they manually save their changes so that others (after they also manually save the same file) can see those changes.
Since one of the computers is hooked up to an office large screen, we want that file which is being shown on the large screen to automatically save (thus seeing any changes made by others) without having to go to that computer and manually saving (thus updating the file) every 5 minutes or so.
I tried various settings on that PC linked to the large monitor in the options section under Save, but nothing seems to work, forcing me to actually do a manual save every 5 minutes or so.
Can this be done automatically on that PC hooked to the large monitor without having someone do this manually at that PC every 5 minutes or so (or whatever interval time period somebody decides to do this)?
Please assist if at all possible; thank you very much.

Hello,

I have 2 corrupted Excel files that I store on Microsoft SharePoint.  I store hundreds of other Excel 2013 files there, but 2 recently became corrupted.  Actually, the only 2 that became corrupted were password protected.  When I try to open each file, it says that they can't be opened because they are corrupted.

I've tried every available recover option and advice; recover formula, data, excel recovery software, open and repair, etc.  I believe that because the files are password protected, standard Excel recovery programs won't work.  I've tried 6 of the more common ones that come up in a google search and they all can't repair the file.  I can't remove the password because it won't open due to the corruption.  In other words, I don't have the option to enter a password because it says that it is corrupted before I have a chance to enter a password.

I've heard that it might be ransom ware or a virus, but nothing has popped up on my computer and all of my non-password protected Excel files are corrupted.

I've tried opening and repairing the file with Excel 2007, too...no luck.

I'm running Windows 8.1, Excel 2013.  Both corrupted Excel files are small...less than 300 kb.

I have the password, so has anyone else had this problem?  If not, does anyone know of someone I could hire to extract the data that I had in the spreadsheet?

I was reading this past thread and am having the same problem with a few machines in the office. They are all running Office 2010 on Windows 7 and I can't get the file associations correct. The newer file extenions are fine but the xls and xlsx files will not automatically open when double clicked. They WILL open if you open Excel and then go to the file, open commands. The new 2010 files will open automatically when double clicked. Files are all saved on the desktop or same folder with different results. Does anyone know of a fix to this? I have done all of the normal fixes, repaired the installation, tried manually open with and checked the always open with box, went to options, advanced, and the "Ignore other applications that use DDE" was not checked. The ONLY thing I can think of is that some of these users are using Microsoft Project 2003. But I did do a full uninstall on Office 2003, fully uninstalled Office 2010 and re-installed Office 2010 and am still not able to have the users double click to open files. Any other ideas? (Again, only happening on a few machines, other machines running Office 2010 on Windows 7 are fine)

Hello!

I need to convert xlsx-files to xlsb-files. I've found some tools on the internet, which are able to do that, but only if all the xlsx-files are in one folder.

My folder topology looks like this:
main folder -> containing 44 folders -> each of them containing 1-3 specific folders -> where each of those specific folders contain 1 specific folder -> which contains the xlsx-files (about 10-30 files) which need to be converted into xlsb-files.

In short: there are about 1800 xlsx-files widespread amongst some folders and subfolders. And because there are so many folders and files, it would be a horror to do this manually.

The format of the folders is the same for all of them (just timestamps and numbering differs).

Use Control panel, default programs, associate a file type - you have more options to select version.

If your 2016 is the desktop version, you have to bury into menus by clicking more apps and scrolling until you find "look for another app on this pc", and then navigate to the 2016 excel executable.

Hello all, first time I`ve ever posted on a forum looking for help, also the first time I`ve not been able to work out a problem with Google .
Very stupidly, and possibly the first time it`s ever been done but;

I went into the properties of a xlsx file (because it wouldn`t open and afterwards realised I hadn`t installed excel with my fresh word 2010 install). Now this file is in .exe format and I can`t for the life of me work out how to change it back.
-The method I used to change it to .exe isn`t available whilst it`s a .exe file.
-I don`t have a back up of the original and no restore point to work with.
-I now have excel installed.

Anyone have a idea if it`s possible to convert back to .xlsx or anyway of retrieving the info in the file?

This one really has me stumped so appreciate some help.
Thanks, 74ninja

A:accidentally converted a .xlsx file into .exe format, how can i undo?

Hello 74ninja and welcome to Seven Forums.

See if this works:

1. Make sure that you have file extensions showing (they're usually hidden by default)

File Extensions - Hide or Show

2. Right-click the file > click rename > erase the .exe > type .xlsx (important to erase the dot as well as exe, then type in the dot and xlsx)

Or, from an elevated command prompt:

Elevated Command Prompt

Type in: move yourfile.exe yourfile.xlsx (Unless the file already exists you should receive an [ok] message indicating that the file has been renamed.)

Hi,

I am trying to pull a dashboard view from a "Tracker". Given below is the formula that I used:

=COUNTIFS('KT Tracker'!$T$2:$T$138,$C$2,'Tracker'!$U$2:$U$138,"<="&TODAY()+7,'Tracker'!$L$2:$L$138,'Monthly Dashboard'!$B17,'Tracker'!$AF$2:$AF$138,'Monthly Dashboard'!$A$13,'Tracker'!$AD$2:$AD$138,"<>Cancelled")

This perfectly works fine in my laptop that has excel 2013 but when I email this to my team who have Excel 2010, they only see zeros. We have checked all options like enabling Automatic Calulcation of Formula, removing all named ranges in the sheet etc., but it is just not working.

Can you please help ? This is a bit urgent and I need to present this for a meeting tomorrow.
Appreciate your help and thanks in advance !!!

It might be something to do with "<>cancelled"

I cannot search for data in excel 2013. This is new issue. I do notice that in the find window there is an entry for Preview* in the box next to format in the options window that I have never seen before. I get the message cannot find what you are looking for but I know it is there because I am looking at it.

This is new issue. Worked until last night when I was doing a sort and had to make all merged cells uniform in size. Now I can sort but cannot find.

Have closed and reopened excel, but it did not correct problem.

I am currently using microsoft xp (sp3) with office 2003 installed. I downloaded the office compatibility pack and i am able to open all office 2007 documents under my administrator account. When i log off and log on as a limited user i can open all office 2007 documents except excel.

Whenever i try to open an .xlsx document it gives me an error stating that this file is not recognizable. i have tried uninstalling and re-installing the compatibility pack and get the same results. My administrator account goes thru the conversion process and everything can be read just fine, but the limited user account receives the error with excel documents.

Thank you,
Mussel

From MS:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/924074
Additionally, Office XP must be updated with the following three updates that were released after SP3:
"918420 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918420/ ) Description of the security update for Microsoft Excel 2002: July 11, 2006
917153 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917153/ ) Description of the update for PowerPoint 2002: July 11, 2006
917347 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917347/ ) Description of the update for Word 2002: July 11, 2006
To verify that these updates are installed for Office XP, follow these steps, as appropriate your operating system."
Since you just are having problems with Excel, make sure you have everything updated.
However, if you do have all the updates, there are several good suggestions in this thread:

Good luck!

I just installed Windows 10 on everyone's laptop here and now I have a bunch of users that their Excel will ocassionally not save or will have graphics issues.  I have tried several suggestions, such as checking their .com add-ins, updating their DisplayLink, and trying to use it in safe mode.  Nothing has been able to fully fix it.  Has anyone else experienced this?  I have heard that Microsoft knows about the issue but has no fixes for it, but I have heard/read that so much that I just don't want to fully believe it.  If anyone has seen this and found a fix can you please help?  Thanks in advance!
