Preferred Solution: Windows could not start the "service name" service on Local Computer Error 129 0x89

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm running W7 Home Premium. I used to run Comodo's Internet Security Suite, but recently uninstalled that and switched to MSSE.

I get the following msg from the Action Center:
"Windows could not start the Security Center service on Local Computer." Error code 5

The Security Center service is set to Automatic (D). If I try to start it manually I get the above message. Both required dependencies are set to automatic, and have started ok.

Any help in resolving this would be much appreciated.

Try starting the service from a command prompt. Type cmd in the Start Menu search box, right click cmd.exe and select "Run as Administrator". In the commnd window type "net start wscsvc" without the quotes.

I have been trying to get my computer to allow me to add a wireless device and have gone through numerous troubleshooting steps. I finally arrived at an impasse. When trying to start the Computer Browser service in the Services console I get Error 1060: The specified service does not exist as an installed service. A similar occurrence happened for the Base Filtering Engine service and I readily found a fix. However I have not been able to find a similar one for Computer Browser. I have run sfc /scannow and rebooted as well as turning off my firewall (Norton Security Suite). I still get the 1060 error message.

Any ideas????

Firstly apologies for the length of this one, I've been on it for a while and wanted to share what I could in the hope it might trigger some ideas.

I'm currently receiving an influx support tickets for Windows 7 (x64) devices that are getting the "Windows could not connect to the System Event Notification Service" error when logging on for the first time.

It's predominantly laptops and mainly older Lenovo X230's but there are far more X230 machines without the problem than with it at this time so I'm struggling to tie it down to a specific build, update, application etc. Instances of the issue starting range
from 6 months ago to last week and I have around 200 devices affected (but this is rising).

The issue happens like this for some of the users:

    # User boots machine up from being switched off
    # Machine boots and gets to logon screen
    # User is unable to logon using their fingerprint reader, the green light isn't lit
    # They try to logon using username / password, this fails
    # "Windows could not connect to the System Event Notification Service" error appears (blue, full screen like the "please wait..." when booting)
    # They are then able to try again and the logon is successful
    # Error doesn't occur again until they reboot

Many of the users report their machines are also very slow to logon ... Read more

I'm using Windows 10 th2-10511 x64 and when I install EMET 5.5 final the EMET system service is installed with the "delayed start" flag and the service and never starts after a reboot. The same thing happened with the beta version, I didn't notice
it until the final was released. This issue doesn't occurs with EMET 5.2.
I switched the service back to the normal Automatic (not delayed) start, and everything seems to be working again. I was wondering if anyone else experienced this issue?

Also, can someone enlighten me about this warning message "DEP/ASLR Policy settings are ineffective by default; see user's guide on how to enable them". It appears when I enable the DEP/ASLR EMET GPO. I couldn't find any reference to this warning
message in the user guide. DEP seems to be enabled, I have no idea how to check for ALSR other than Process hacker that shows ASLR as N/A.

A:*RESOLVED* Media Center "Tuner Not Found" error, "Receiver service has stopped"

Okay, I resolved the first two issues, Tuner error and ehrecvr error. It had to do with multiple Admin user accounts on my computer. My computer was originally set up with a user Robert Baker with full privileges as administrator. I then also set up a MediaCenter account with full privilidges. For whatever reason the MediaCenter account has access to EVERY action on the computer except starting the ehrecvr service.1.  First set Media Center Service Launcher to log on at NT Authority    Services > Right-Click Windows Media Center Service Launcher > Properties > Log On tab > Log On As 'This account: ' > Type " NT AUTHORITY/LocalService " > Click Apply > General tab > Start service.2. I then set the Media Center Scheduler Service AND Media Center Receiver Service to log on as my other admin account. Same as above but with other account credentials and started the services.3. Reboot and no ehrecvr errors. Since this was a good sign I tried WMC and was able to set up my TV fine.I STILL, however, get the "Upgrade in progress" message when I open Media Center. Anyone know how to fix that? I've run setup again and can't get rid of it.

Is there anything I can do like copying the service from my other Window7 box? Any advice is appreciated.

Is it possible you have the wording incorrect. It needs to be verbatim.

In the tray at the bottom right of the screen where the wireless signal strength indicator thingy sits I now have a blue circle. Sometimes I get an orange star where there used to be a white histogram.

The computer still connects to the Internet but if I right click on the icon the icon will change to a plug and a red cross.

If I open Network and Sharing Centre I see the message in the title to this post.

As I type I now have "Not connected - Connections are available" in a box above the tray but I AM still connected.

I'm really beginning to hate Windows 7.

I'm almost positive I've seen this problem posted somewhere before, but the search function is not finding it. General 'net searches for it turn up problems relating to a fake Security Center Service, but that's not what this is. At least, I don't think.

On both this system (Windows 7) and my laptop (Vista) I'm getting the same persistent error message in the little red shield, and I've seen it in both normal and safe modes on each machine:

"Windows Security Center Service is turned off."

Clicking the adjacent button labeled "Turn on" invariably gets you a popup that says:

"Windows Security Center can't be started."

Is this just a useless bit of MS bloatware that's rendered superfluous by outside-vendor antivirus (I'm running Sunbelt Vipre,) and firewall (ZoneAlarm) software, and can disabled with impunity? Or is it something more sinister?

Thanks for any info on this,

Hello everybody. I have a difficult but interesting problem. A few days ago after a system crash I lost all sound, the volume control was gone and error saying no mixer is preset would appear every time I tryed to play a sound. Onboard sound is turned on in BIOS, in device manager it displayed as woking properly. I reinstaled the drivers, and uninstalled the onboard sound from hardware manager, and manualy reinstalled it, none of it did anything. In control panel> Sounds and Audio devices is sais " no audio device", but in Winamp or Ventrilo I went into the options and is output device it was set to some defalt generic item, I changed it back to my onboard sound and now winamp play mp3s just fine, as well as ventrillo.
So this is not a driver or hardware problem, this is a windows problem.

I have researched it quite a bit and found a few poeple with exactly the same problem. It apears that Windows Audio service is dissplayed as "stopped" even tho it's set to Automatic. Alot of people were able to solve their problem by simply clicking the start service button and it all worked fine onse again. How ever few (I'm one of these guys) the service would not start, instead we get this error

"could not start the Windows Audio service on local computer. Error 126: The specified module could not be found"

As soon as I start an application (Cadence Allegro PCB Designer 16.5 but I don't think it's relevant) my CPU usage gets to the roof and stays there long after I killed the application and I believe I every associated process. The CPU usage is so high that the battery will be drained after about 45 minutes (It usually last about 3 hours).

According to my task manager the responsible is "Service Host: Local System (Network Restricted)". As a matter of fact, preventing the executable from accessing the network sort of solves the issue. I don't believe I need that executable to access the network but I'd like to understand what kind of network service can consume that much CPU (was actually affraid of overheating) and to know if there's a more appropriate way to solve this. Thanks.

I pretty much don't really know much about my p.c. system as I'm not usually the one looking into the works of my p.c. In fact all I know is what I've seen others do. So forgive me in my ignorance. I've looked around and saw that either no one has my issue
or if they do, the fixes are generally confusing.
I bought a laptop (with windows 8) bout 3-4 months ago. I not sure if the issues started when I upgraded to windows 8.1 or just afterwards but they've been going on for a few weeks. My computer is running out of virtual memory at the most random times. Usually
it starts to run out of virtual memory after a couple of days of it being left on (with standby). If I close most my active programs the memory changes by 2-10%. If I have more then four programs open at this stage it warns me that my virtual memory is being
used up. (I am usually using Chrome (or firefox but that would refuse to stay open for more then 5 seconds so I uninstalled it), steam (chatting only), musicbee and task manager.)

My only virus scan is Windows defender and it claims no threats were detected.
I have 6 gig of ram but I'm not positive how to check virtual memory. Or even where to start with fixing this issue.

Anyway thank you in advance and if you need more information just let me know.

A:"service host: Local system (network restricted)(11)" eating virtual memory

First, let me explain that Virtual memory is used when your RAM is filled up or when you put a laptop into hibernate mode (hibernate mode essentially dumps your RAM onto the hard drive so it can pick up where it left off even after power is shut off).
Since the general shut down of Windows 8 or 8.1 likes a combined hibernate  so that windows can start up quickly, I consider that this issue is caused by such shut down and fast boot.
I suggest we disable fast boot to check the issue:
To Turn "Fast Startup" On or Off in System Settings on this article:
Also, we can try to reset virtual memory to see what?s going on.
Configure Virtual Memory in Windows 8
If the issue persists, please test it in Clean boot mode:
How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista
If the issue doesn?t appear, you can determine which one can be the cause by using dichotomy in MSconfig. Checking on half of Non-Microsoft service and restart, determining which half of the services cause the issue and repeating to check half of the problematic
half services.
If the issue persists in Clean boot mode, let?s run Process explorer to view which program calling service host causing this issue, and we can remove it to see what?s ... Read more

Hello - I've repeatedly tried and failed to install Service Pack 1. I have run the update readiness tool, and have run chkdsk and sfc. I've tried installing through Windows Update, as well as downloading the standalone installer from Microsoft.

The former results in an "unknown error"; the latter results in a window saying that "the specified service does not exist as an installed service" almost immediately after trying. A similar message has come up occasionally in recent days when trying to install a couple of other programs.

I'm currently out of ideas and would appreciate any help. Thanks!

I recently purchased a 128gb Crucial M4 SSD.

The other day my father and I sat down together to work on setting up the SSD as my OS drive. We installed Windows 7 64bit Home Premium successfully on the drive. There were no issues until I started to install drivers liberally rather then conservatively.

While installing ~101 Window's Updates, I impatiently started installing my XFX Radeon 6870 drivers. This caused a crash and a blue screen to appear. After rebooting the system in Safe Mode, everything appeared fine. However, my video card drivers were in a weird funk. After some research, I resolved the issue and my video card drivers were all working and installed successfully.

The big problem now is that when trying to Install Service Pack 1, I get an error code upon reboot that says "D_S_S_SUCCESS(0x0)". During the installation of Service Pack 1, the install stops about half-way and wants me to reboot the system, so I do. Rebooting the system is when I get the error code. The screen that pops up says that the install was unsuccessful.

I've looked around on Microsoft's website to find some help. So far I've performed the following tasks:

Downloaded a tool by Microsoft called Mrfixit.
I've ran troubleshooting that attempts to fix windows update.
I've ran disk cleanup to delete temporary files, which won't even delete everything...
I've uninstalled any virus software

Please post your CheckSUR.log file, and a copy ofyour CBS.log file.
Since you are still at an early stage, it may be quicker and easier to simply reinstall - it would probably be less damaging than repeated attempts to install SP1

This time, I would recommend updating Windows first, in batches (do the Security updates first, and leave all .NET updates until last - do not install the Recommended updates until all Important ones are in)Once Windows is up to date, install an AV, and any needed drivers (from the manufacturer's site).

I know this was from an old thread (nearly two years, actually), but I wanted to make sure it was still more readily accessible. I searched for nine hours today and kept running against the same set of "fixes" which didn't fix anything.

I have Vista Home (64bit) and somehow (I truly have *no* idea), Windows Installer disappeared. I don't mean turned off or otherwise inaccessible. It wasn't there. I went back and forth to services, etc. searched (online and on the computer) and got NOWHERE - until I found this thread:

Repair Windows Installer Service in Vista (All Versions)

It was simple but I never even thought about it. I followed the steps with one exception: because my msiserver service file was completely absent from the damaged registry running "sfc/scannow" didn't do anything and I had to open the services file and import the changes from there rather than double clicking the msiserver.reg file. I am very, very grateful to have had this information and I hope by posting my experience from today here, it will help someone else who's ready to drop kick their computer...

It seems that my computer is missing Windows 7 Service Pack 1, but when I go to Service Pack Center - Microsoft Windows, it reccommends automatic installation of SP1 with Windows Update - which I can't seem to get running on my computer. It seems that you can also download from Microsoft site and manually install onto your computer but I am not sure if I should proceed to do that...
Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I am aware this a problem that has been addressed multiple time on this forum and others but am unable to come up with a solution from previous posts.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate x64, and have been for years.

I have had no problems previously that I was unable to fix.

This morning when starting up my pc I got the error message "Failed to connect to a windows service"

In addition it has defaulted to windows classic theme and I can not re enable Aero.

I looked at the Event log but it is simply beyond my level of understanding how to address the errors. Also all errors shown seem to be relativity longstanding/ recurring.

I have tried all the common suggestions I could find and none have fixed to problem.

Please can you help

RPC Endpoint Mapper
Manually start each on and set to AUTOSTART as you go.
If one fails, then that is the root problem.

i noticed that recently i haven't been getting my regular windows updates and now when i click on windows update via the control panel, it takes several minutes to load and then when it finally does, it comes up with a red x and the quote above in the
title. I tried opening windows defender as well and it said that it was turned off. i click turn on and it gives me a timeout error after about 2 minutes: 0x800705b4. One thing to note is that i recently got a virus on my computer about 2 weeks ago. According
to AVG it is gone but i have my doubts. i manually downloaded the Microsoft security essential definitions too because it wasn't updating for use and it is now working. The scan is currently in progress but i don't think ill find anything because i did the
same thing with AVG. I tried multiple things from threads like restarting the services and such but to no avail. Please help me, i'm desperate for a windows update. Ill provide any system information that is required for the solution.

My problem is identical to kpk13's posted 1 week ago, but the solution that worked for him doesn't work for me. I'm trying to run Windows update on a Windows 7 laptop I haven't used in a while, and get the message "Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running." However, both "Background Intelligent Transfer Service" and "Windows Update" services are running, as detailed in "Windows Update Cannot Check For Updates" error message when you try to install updates". The app in .../971058 claims to have fixed the problem but I still have it. Any suggestions?

Long story short, Ive been attempting to install Games for Windows Live however everything I have encountered so far has led me here to ask for the help of others. You see I am running windows 7 home premium 64bit and when I attempt to update windows its states that "Windows update service is not running please restart." I have restarted and the problem has persisted and I am nearly at witts end. I have checked service to see if the problem lies there but it doesn't even show up....
Trust me I have tried everything I could find and even followed the instructions posted here in the guidelines Windows Update Posting Instructions As I proceeded to run the readiness tool the program stopped and gave me this error from the Windows Update Standalone Installer "Installer encounteered and error: 0x80070424. The specified service does not exist as an installed service" Which was to be expected seeing as it is not running under the services and several other things I tried gave me this error :/

Yeah, so I've been running Windows 7 for a few months after wiping my hard drive with my genuine windows 7 installation disc and now Windows is telling me that my copy is not genuine.
So I tried to go through the steps that the activate online window led me to, it worked until I reset my computer.
After resetting, Windows went back to telling me that my copy is not genuine.
After activating online failed, I tried to re enter my product key, after doing that a message box saying "Service has not been started" pops up.
Later, I looked up a solution on google and it led me to this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icLOqN-hLns I followed the steps and the activation problem still didn't go away.
I tried to re activate the Software Licensing service but when i went to services.msc, "Software Liscensing" Isn't there!
I am at my wit's end here, I have a physical copy of Windows 7 but I don't want to wipe my system again!

I am running windows 7 home premium. When I click "Check for updates" on Windows Update, I get this error: "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." However, the services are running (well started, not sure if that's different), see attached.

I've tried restarting my computer several times and running the fix here: "Windows Update Cannot Check For Updates" error message when you try to install updates
I've tried manually starting the service but get this error:

Hi, I have seen searching for a long time to resolve my issue regarding windows update. Recently i formatted my hard drive. Upon installation of some software my windows update stopped working. Getting an error message "Service Not Running". I tried to fix using microsoft's "WindowsUpdateDiagnostic" software. It detected some errors and said resolved after fixing(except missing files).
I am unable to upload the log report as per posting instructions. Says "access denied" when i try to copy CBS folder.

Help will be appreciated.

A:Windows 7 Update "Service Not Running" Error

OK, this isn't a fix, but it's the next steps I would take because I see no one's replied to your post or mine yet. Maybe one noob can help another.

Click Start, right-click Computer, click Manage, Services and Applications, then click Services.
Scroll down to find Windows Update and double-click it.

I presume the "Service Status" is "stopped"? What's the Startup Type set at? I think it should be Automatic (Delayed Start).
If you click the Start button for the service, what happens?
That might (hopefully!) shed a little more light on your problem.

Hi all,

So this problem seemed to have started after I pulled a flash drive out that was using Readyboost (pulled out while the computer was off). Since then, I always get the "Failed to connect to a windows service" error showcased in this image: (http://i.imgur.com/eBGnS.jpg). My task bar was also turned gray a la Windows 98 style and I'm not able to get it back. In general, I've noticed a much slower boot and a much slower time switching between tasks on the computer. I'm not sure if this is the right place to post all of this but I thought I'd do it anyway.

I'll attach the files and answer any questions that might follow..pretty sure I do have access to the boot disks as well though it's been awhile since I've completely re installed Windows

I tried to create a new account on the family computer for my mother, because she was tired of using my nephew's account (He's very messy, even on the computer, and she doesn't like his clutter.)

She attempted to use it, and got the 'User Account Service service failed." error.

I deleted the account, and tried again with a different named account. Same thing.

The only accounts that seem to work are mine (Administrator) and my nephew's (Standard.)

I read a forum posting for this problem that stated the problem was because of account SIDs and the wonky way Vista goes about its business. Now, at one time I did have two accounts. Chance, and Blake. I deleted Blake because I hadn't realized that he would have permanent access to my private files after navigating to them from his account. However, this did not delete the Blake entry in C:\Users. I created another account for him, again called Blake. This created an entry in C:\Users called Blake.Home.

Now, the only entries I have SIDs for in regedit are Chance, Blake.Home, systemprofile, LocalService, and NetworkService.

There are no SIDs left over from previous accounts that could be causing this trouble.

I went to the System Properties Users tab and found three entries. Unknown Account,Chance, and Blake. I deleted Unknown Account (It was a leftover from some problems with creating a new account for my nephew.) Now the user account manager, and the System Properties User Profiles tab list ... About a week and a half ago i turned on my computer to be greeted by "windows 98" style graphics and an error message saying "Cannot connect to a windows service" It also said the service it could not connect to is the "System event notification service". Since i've been getting this error my computer has been slow to turn on and off, and non admins cannot log in. I suspect it may be a virus as i have tried to enable the service myself, reset the winsock from command prompt and i even saw if it was a third party application that was interfering with it but alas nothing seems to help (Even a system restore had no effect). So far i've run Spybot search and destroy, malwarebytes anti malware, avg 2012, and eset. These programs have found little things such as tracking cookies but nothing major. Could anyone help me solve this issue? Thanks in advance :)

A:"Cannot connect to a windows service error"

It was probably referring to the Desktop Windows Manager service if you didn't get the aero styles that you're used to seeing.

Try starting up the service again:
1) Goto start menu, and type in services.msc
2) Hit enter
3) In here find Desktop Windows Manager and start/restart the service.

Otherwise try System File Checker in case dwm.exe was corrupted in anyway.

Enter this command in command prompt console:

sfc /scannow
Let it finish, and reboot if necessary.
