Hye.... My notebook cannot be able to format.
Compaq CQ40, and i want to know that what software the best for my notebook...
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
Why do you want to format?
You need to be more specific of what you want to do

What OS are you running & what was the previous OS?
Your system info says
Operating system installed
You mentioned that you installed XP SP2. You are in the Vista Support forum.
It seems like the BSOD is chasing me...
This time it's about my own laptop.
Its a Compaq cq40 and It's been acting very strange since a couple of weeks.
Suddenly a BSOD will come up and restar my computer.... but I can still use it...
I'd like to fix it before trying to format the entire disc....
I'm posting the dump files...
Thanks in advance!
It seems like you may have bad memory and reinstalling windows will not fix this issue.
What you should try to do is get a copy of MemTest.
Burn it to a CD and check your RAM. Let it test about 3 times, as if it passed 100% once it may not be an accurate result!
Post back if you need more help or if you are ready to continue.

Ever since I've bought this computer (beginning of 2009) my Compaq Presario CQ40 has been extremely slow. I don't really run much software on it, but it takes around 10-15 minutes to start up all processes.
I run Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Firewall as security, but it previously had Trend Micro Internet Security in 2009.
I do Disk Cleanups, a full defrag through CMD and a chkdsk /r but it's still painfully slow.
The CPU fan is nearly always running all of the time, and after a quick Google this seems to be a problem in the Presario?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Everyone, please inform me the driver motherboard for Compaq Presario CQ40-530TU Notebook PC which is compatible with Windows 7 - 32 bit. In HP Website, I only found the driver for Windows Vista (32-64 bit). I really need your help all.
I think most, if not all, of the Vista drivers will work on Windows 7. Actually, when I upgraded a Vista laptop some years ago most of the drivers were included in Windows 7 so you may not need all. Seems like I only needed graphics and wireless driver. How does your Device Manager look?Read other 1 answers
Hello all.Just as the title said.
My Notebook is HP/Compaq CQ40-323AX. When I seed the windows7, I love it at once. And I have installed win7 to virtual pc. But I want to install win7 to my notebook but not virtuall pc. So some problems occured. It's the driver. Because the win7 was based on the vista, I think it may run well when useing the vista drivers (The drivers were downloaded at www.hp.com.cn)
Who can tell me I can do as I think? It's my thought right?
Or someone can give me a better way!
How is the performance under Vista Ultimate? If you are using Vista Ultimate there should be no problem upgrading or even 'Fresh' installing windows 7.
Yes, a lot of Vista drivers work with Windows 7 (just right-click the setup file and in properties select Compatability for Vista). This works about 90% of the time, if installing build 7068 you may not even need to update your drivers.
NOTE: You will need to backup you existing files (pictured/documents/music/videos etc) and make sure you've got an installation disk for Vista in case the upgrade/install fails.
P.S sorry for the late reply
Hi! My computer is Compaq Presario CQ40. It's 8 years old and can only be used when directly plugged in to the electric socket. It's been working fine until last night when it suddenly shut off. At first I thought that maybe the plug was accidentally pulled out from the source but when I tried to plug it in again, the light indicator beside the power supply in the unit itself won't turn on. I tried to unplug and plug the charger adapter but nothing happened. May I know what could have possibly happened? Is there a way for me to check the possibile problem? I know that my laptop is very old, but I still find it very useful and I wish to continue to use it in the future. Hope to hear from you soon.Thank you!
If you are lucky the AC adapter has just died. To understand more, no light comes on the adapter brick when you plug it in the wall and no light comes on next to the AC jack when you plug into the laptop? Where do you live? On an 8 year old laptop you can find a useable "3rd party" charger for a few dollars.Read other 1 answers

However, when I searched for drivers for Windows 7, I did not find any on HP website. I searched as follows: 1. Visited http://support.hp.com/us-en2. Entered Compaq Presario CQ40-314TU Notebook PC in the search box3. Selected Software and Drivers from the left menu4. Clicked Go5. Selected Windows in the Operating system dropdown list6. In the Version dropdown list, I only had two options; Windows Vista (32-bit) and Windows Vista (64-bit). Even selecting one of these options displays:No software or drivers are available for this product with the selected operating system. I'm trying to repair/reformat a laptop. It's a Compaq laptop, Presario CQ40. It originally had Windows XP but started giving a blue screen. I can't get anything to work now. Windows won't boot, all it gives is a registry error (software/hive). When I try to boot from the Windows XP disc, it starts the XP boot load, but right before it gets to XP Recovery Repair screen, it gives another blue screen. It says "Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7C1E524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). I don't know what to try. Several internet searches have suggested turning the SATA to Legacy in the BIOS, but I have nothing in the BIOS that relates to SATA. I'm stuck. Please help!
Blue screens can be caused y a couple of failing devices; HDD and RAM are most common. Substituting system components with good ones is a cheap way to solve problems like this. It's easiest to start with the system ram and you can easily eliminate the faulty component that way.

If your Win XP CD, does not support your Sata Controller, you will need to load drivers to uses at F6.
Load Sata Controller drivers with a floppy disk is the best way.
SATA Drivers - Load in Windows XP Setup on Dual Boot
SATA Drivers - Slipstream into Windows XP CD

As briefly as I can - my new compaq (sempron 3400+ presario) came with 512 of ram and an onboard ATI Xpress 200 video card that claims "Up to 256mb of shared video memory can be allocated" - it came with 64 preset. I tried changing that to 128 but in the bios/setup screen it was greyed out.
Calling compaq's tech support proved to be useless. They said you need to install more ram and then you can change the amount of onboard ram.
So a few days later - today - I got 2 512mb sticks, giving me a total of 1.5gb of ram.
Going back to setup, it's still greyed out at 64mb. Calling tech support they said "go to my computer and right click on properties" and asked how much ram I had, I said 1.46gb is available. They said "There, that's how much ram you have."
After about 30 minutes of back and forth of trying to explain my problem, they said you can only have up to 128mb of onboard ram shared. At this point I was just getting pissed and said fine then how do I make it 128mb?
Needless to say, compaq support didn't go anywhere.
I went out and spent $140 on 1gb of ram today (getting some rebates with them) but my onboard ram is still stuck at 64mb. The bios gives you the option for video "Onboard, PCI, PCI-EXPRESS" it's on PCI right now. I tried switching to onboard, and it's the same thing. Greyed out at 64mb.
I know onboard video sucks and all, but more than anything I'm just disappointed that the compaq bo... Read more

The SUPPORT PAGE for that model says it came with FreeDOS, which probably means that Windows 10 did not come from the factory. I have my Compaq Presario CQ40 144TU (Intel C2D T5800, 160 GB HDD, 2 GB RAM).

I am using the same customized CD in this below entire post, so the problem of SATA not supported by XP is elimintated.
I had also setup a ubuntu installation which i never used.
I had a dual booting on my system with Windows XP Pro and Linux Ubuntu, last week I tried to delete the partitions of Ubuntu from the Computer Management window in Win XP. The system got hanged and I did a force shut down. On restart the system freezes after a couple of minnutes on the desktop. After doing multiple restarts(force) the OS is not booting up at all. When i tried to do a format of the OS drive and delete the Linux partitions using the XP bootable CD, the XP setup fails to access the Hard Drive, and do not show any of the logical drives as well as the Linux drives. I think by mistake I may have deleted the partition which had the MBR on it. (I am sure i did not try to delete the OS drive. I tried to delete the drive which was showing as unallocated (ubuntu drives usually shows as unallocated)).

My Compaq Armada 3500 won't boot past COMPAQ logo. It wont boot to Floppy or CD and I cant enter BIOS to change any settings. I have 2 of these laptops (I bought them both used). My other one had the same similar problem when I got it, but I fixed by removing the cmos battery for 30 minutes and rebooting after I put it back in without the HD in the case. It told me error 162 options not set, and date and time had to be reset, and to hit F1 to save the settings. I did and rebooted. It booted to my floppy Win98 boot disk fine, and then I put in a COMPAQ setup for portables and a DIAG floppy and set it up to boot to multi boot. It runs like a charm now for its size.
But the other one will not accept any of these options although it does tell me the same message after I remove the CMOS battery and put it back in as I did the other one. But when I reboot, it still doesnt see the floppy, CDROM or let me boot to bios to enter setup. It just shows the COMPAQ logo and says "non system disk, remove the disk and hit a key when ready." I have removed the hard drive, removed the CD ROM, and removed the floppy on seperate occasions to see if any of them were the problem, but no change. I took the whole thing apart, and put it back together hoping something would end up being connected to the problem, but it still doesn't change the problem. Next to selling it for parts, any ideas? I have an old Compaq Armada 3500 laptop that I bought years ago to help me through college. After that it kinda gathered dust a little until recently when I wanted to dig it back out and just use it to play a few games on and whathaveyou. It booted up fine when I first did it but it soon transpired that it was absolutely chocablock with viruses and spyware and it was running terribly.
So, on what now looks to have been a foolish move, I did a C: drive format in the hope of popping in a Win98SE installation disc and have it boot from that to re-install Windows.
However, now it won't boot up past the COMPAQ initial screen and a "602: Diskette Read Driver Error" or something keeps flashing up.
Is there any way to get into the BIOS settings to set the CD Drive as the first in the boot-up line-up, or are there recovery discs I can download that'll at least get me into DOS?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Well you should be able to access the CMOS Bios by using either the delete, F1 or F2 keys (sometimes f10). Then under the Bios you should see the Boot Sequence and be able to change it from there. But either way, you should be able to get past the Compaq splash screen. Try setting your boot sequence and see if that helps.
I've recently installed a wireless lan in my office. I have Roadrunner cable coming into their router which in turn is attached to a Linksys router. I have one desktop (Dell) running XP Pro hardwire to the router. I also have a laptop and another desktop connected via wireless. I've seen all over the place that you should not enable file sharing. So, how do you allow acces from one computer to another. I've set them all up on the same workgroup.....what am I missing? I've been able to send print from the wireless laptop to the printer attached to the wireless desktop. It's just the folders I'm having problems accessing.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
Where exactly have "I've seen all over the place that you should not enable file sharing".
If you don't that is fine. But then you can't share files. Just a choice to make.
With a router you should be reasonably protected.
Could anyone tell me the advantages and disadvantages of disabling cache writing on the priming HDD? Thanks in advance
I think the default setting is usually to enable it?
I have a dim understand of it from memory. As I recall, enabling it provides slightly faster performance but has a slight risk of data corruption in cases of a bad shutdown--like from a power outage. It can also have consequences when using RAID.
The geekiest thing to do is to enable it, but use a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) to eliminate the risk from power failure.
Me? I've always left it enabled and haven't knowingly suffered any negative consequences.
Greetings! I own a HP Compaq Presario 2547 AI which has done many many years since I purchased it sometime in 2006. But of late it shows a persistent problem. At first it would beep numerous times on start up, and then go into normal booting on itw own.But now, it just stays stuck at the Compaq Logo screen with the F2, F10 and F12 messages, but when I press any of that it does nothing. I tried putting a bootable DVD CD ROM but that didn't work. I tried reseating the RAM but that didn't work.I tried A USB keyboard and that didn't work ....I tried reseating the HDD, and checked that but it is unlikely that a faulty HDD is at cause. Now I know this is an old celeron processor with an old CMOS battery, but my research tells me that is ulikely that those two are at fault as I've never let this unit overheat or expose to power fluctuations. It was working perfectly fine inspite of those numerour beeps at startup and then booting into WIndows but now it just stays stuck the Compaq Logo Splash screen. Can someone help me resolve this issue, as I've invested quite a bit into this old chugger and want it fixed/upgraded/ made and ANdroid PC or someway of getting the perfectly good screen , HDD, DVD RW and RAM and motherboard to work again? If you can help me, my HP Compaq will give you loads of kisses for sure and chug ahead for a long long timeRead other answers
