I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
Ever since I've bought this computer (beginning of 2009) my Compaq Presario CQ40 has been extremely slow. I don't really run much software on it, but it takes around 10-15 minutes to start up all processes.
I run Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Firewall as security, but it previously had Trend Micro Internet Security in 2009.
I do Disk Cleanups, a full defrag through CMD and a chkdsk /r but it's still painfully slow.
The CPU fan is nearly always running all of the time, and after a quick Google this seems to be a problem in the Presario?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi! My computer is Compaq Presario CQ40. It's 8 years old and can only be used when directly plugged in to the electric socket. It's been working fine until last night when it suddenly shut off. At first I thought that maybe the plug was accidentally pulled out from the source but when I tried to plug it in again, the light indicator beside the power supply in the unit itself won't turn on. I tried to unplug and plug the charger adapter but nothing happened. May I know what could have possibly happened? Is there a way for me to check the possibile problem? I know that my laptop is very old, but I still find it very useful and I wish to continue to use it in the future. Hope to hear from you soon.Thank you!
If you are lucky the AC adapter has just died. To understand more, no light comes on the adapter brick when you plug it in the wall and no light comes on next to the AC jack when you plug into the laptop? Where do you live? On an 8 year old laptop you can find a useable "3rd party" charger for a few dollars.Read other 1 answers
Hi Everyone, please inform me the driver motherboard for Compaq Presario CQ40-530TU Notebook PC which is compatible with Windows 7 - 32 bit. In HP Website, I only found the driver for Windows Vista (32-64 bit). I really need your help all.
I think most, if not all, of the Vista drivers will work on Windows 7. Actually, when I upgraded a Vista laptop some years ago most of the drivers were included in Windows 7 so you may not need all. Seems like I only needed graphics and wireless driver. How does your Device Manager look?Read other 1 answers

I'm trying to repair/reformat a laptop. It's a Compaq laptop, Presario CQ40. It originally had Windows XP but started giving a blue screen. I can't get anything to work now. Windows won't boot, all it gives is a registry error (software/hive). When I try to boot from the Windows XP disc, it starts the XP boot load, but right before it gets to XP Recovery Repair screen, it gives another blue screen. It says "Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7C1E524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). I don't know what to try. Several internet searches have suggested turning the SATA to Legacy in the BIOS, but I have nothing in the BIOS that relates to SATA. I'm stuck. Please help!
Blue screens can be caused y a couple of failing devices; HDD and RAM are most common. Substituting system components with good ones is a cheap way to solve problems like this. It's easiest to start with the system ram and you can easily eliminate the faulty component that way.
Hello, I have a HP Compaq Presario CQ40-314TU Notebook. Currently, Windows Vista is installed on the notebook. I am planning to upgrade the notebook to Windows 7 Professional Edition. However, when I searched for drivers for Windows 7, I did not find any on HP website. I searched as follows: 1. Visited http://support.hp.com/us-en2. Entered Compaq Presario CQ40-314TU Notebook PC in the search box3. Selected Software and Drivers from the left menu4. Clicked Go5. Selected Windows in the Operating system dropdown list6. In the Version dropdown list, I only had two options; Windows Vista (32-bit) and Windows Vista (64-bit). Even selecting one of these options displays:No software or drivers are available for this product with the selected operating system. Please make a different selection, or visit the product homepage. Please tell me the link for installing drivers for this notebook for Windows 7 Professional Edition. Regards,Aziz

First check for all the Win XP drivers for your hardware.
You can check your HP/compaq PC here:
General XP Downgrade Guide for HP Laptops - HP Support Forum
NOTE: Please read this thread fully.
If your Win XP CD, does not support your Sata Controller, you will need to load drivers to uses at F6.
Load Sata Controller drivers with a floppy disk is the best way.
SATA Drivers - Load in Windows XP Setup on Dual Boot
SATA Drivers - Slipstream into Windows XP CD

Hi, i'm having a problem turning on my laptop. I'm using a Compaq Presario C502US. I've been using the AC adapter that came with the laptop but eventually the AC adapter became loose and broke. The charging icon (lightning symbol) wouldn't turn on anymore and I think the laptop has now run out of power. I've finally received a new adapter and when i plug it in the charging icon lights up. However the laptop still won't turn on. I've waited for about 2 hours but it still won't turn on. When i click the power button, the Power turns on and then it blinks. The Fan turns on for about 3 seconds but then it goes off and the power light blinks and the monitor won't turn on. Can anyone help me with this problem?
Remove battery and power adaptor (ie all power out)
Hold down the ON button (to disperse all internal power)
Plug the power adaptor back in only (and to wall socket!)
If it works, turn back off, and re-install battery, turn On
I hit the power button this morning and nothing happened. Tried unplugging and holding power button in and still nothing.
Please post your system specs, exact model Presario, include any upgrades or modifications please.
I bought a presario 1500 that I had assumed had a problem with green lines that were on the lcd and external monitor. The lady who owned it had taken it apart and sold it to me that way. I bought it today and tested it when I got home. I powered it on and I saw that the fan will move slightly but won't start and the hard drive will start but shuts down after about 5-10 seconds. The power light always stays on but nothing else. I noticed when I unplug the hard drive and battery inverter board(see link) it will shut off the power light. Could that be the problem? I don't see how the motherboard could break when it was never used. Anyone have some advise?
This looks like a power supply controller card issue. Also some systems will not run if the CPU fan is not working. You need the battery inverter board in place to power the system and light the light.
I have a compaq Persario M2000. The other day, I was using the touch pad to move and it just shut off. I tried to turn it back on and nothing happens. When I look at the AC adaprter led it is not turned on and it is plugged in. I removed the battery and tried the same with no luck. the ac adapter led is still not light up. The battery is fully charged, and when i try just that nothing happens. I opened it up and removed the bios battery and checked the chips and circuits. nothing seems out of place ot burnt. I used a multi meter to check the power button and it is getting power, as well as the curcuits in the ac adapter
can someone help me or give me some ideas what my nxt step is?
I had similar problems with compaq laptops - it's the power supply in your laptop - the repair for that is about $300+
check your warranty before doing anything else...
Here's the story how it doesn't turn on...
I was charging my ipod and I accidentally pull the usb plug with my feet and then my Compaq Presario s3200nx turned off... I opened my CPU and tried looking if there's something wrong but it looks like it's fine. Now everytime I turn my Compaq Presario s3200nx on all the fans just rotates a little bit.
So can anyone help me how to fix this?
Please and thanks in advance =D
I have had these computer for about two years now no problem. Was working find the night before had a storm come through, and the next morring went to turn it on nothing. The light on the back of the power supply blinks instead of staying green.Thought it was the power supply but test it out and it good. What could be wrong with it and sould i fix it or buy something else?Any help would be helpful. Thanks Nasher205
Yeah, it sounds like the end of the computer. It served you well. Move on to a modern HP for instance. They make a reasonable desktop for a reasonable price. Avoid the low cost attraction of another Compaq.
I have a Compaq Presario R4000. It's around 6 years old. Until recently it has worked as well as any other laptop with the usual software problems. Yesterday I tried to switch it on and all I see is the charge light flashes once for around 1 second then goes out. No response at all from the machine. Tried running it without the battery but still no response. A friend told me that it may be the battery and that some laptops won't run without a battery inserted.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
The motherboard is probably fried, after 6 years. Also, the CPU cooling heatsink/fan could be bad or the thermal paste or pads could be burned. If the battery is the original it is in long need of replacing...
"that some laptops won't run without a battery inserted"
Not exactly true. If the AC adapter circuits are faulty, maybe yes. Otherwise, it is not true. If a battery shorts, it can keep a laptop from powering up
I have a compaq SR2010NX with windows XP and ethernet that runs through a netgear module through the wall plug-in. I downloaded norton updates the other day and can't remember if I shut down the computer or not. Anyway my son turned off the power cord. When I turned it back on, the computer would not power up. The light on the hard drive does not illuminate and the fan does not run. I have checked the wall socket and power cord and they are fine. I also checked the power cord at the back of the cpu and tried other sockets, to no avail. Any ideas?
It probably has a cheap psu on it that now needs replacement.
Why on earth did you put norton on it? It is seriously crap.
My laptop is only a year and a half old and it wont turn on. I recently had to buy a universal charger because the original broke. I was using it tonight then all of sudden it turns off without warning. The light on the power cord is on, but when i plug it into the computer it turns off, so it just stays on when not connected to the laptop. The light that indicates the computer is charging doesn't come on. when i press the on button, nothing at all happens. I really dont know what to do. I had some files that i didnt back up but i really dont care about them, i just want my laptop back. Any suggestions?
"The light on the power cord is on, but when i plug it into the computer it turns off"...
Try another AC adapter first. If the same thing happens, there is a problem with the internal DC jack or the motherboard is bad
Hi - thanks for your attention and help.
Saw this was posted before here but unresolved. That was years back.
I lost power last night, and now today, Compaq Presario SR1215CL is unresponsive. Was not moved, is plugged into a top notch surge protector, that also the printer, monitor, etc utilize and they are all operational.
There is a rapid clicking noise and a tiny green light in the back rapidly flashing.
When I unplug it, the clicking and flashing slows and finally stops.
Must stress this computer has been fine. No movement, impact, trauma, etc. Just power off and refuses to come back on.
Any advice? Have been Googling help threads before coming here. Thank you.

Hello, my name is Alexander. I am new here.
I just decided to turn on my laptop to play Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004: A Century of Flight. First I pressed the power button to turn on the laptop and it blinked, the battery light also blinked. As I remember the battery was charged, so I decided to turn it on again. After pressing the button, the COMPAQ boot screen appeared but suddenly all the screen gone gray for some unknown reason. I pressed and held the power button for 10 seconds but nothing happened. Then I removed the battery but the laptop didn't turned off. Now, I leaved the laptop for 3 hours and it didn't shut down.
Last night it worked fine. I was playing Microsoft Flight Simulator 98 and listening to some Guns 'n' Roses songs.
Specs (Sorry, I forgot the laptop model):
Graphics card: Mobile Intel 4 Series Chipset.
OS: Windows Vista Home Basic.
Hold the power button for 15 seconds or until the computer shuts off. Let it set for a few minutes. Put the battery in and make sure you are using the power adapter too. Start the computer. If it won't boot normally press the F8 key repeatedly until you can boot into Safe Mode.Read other 2 answers
My Compaq Presario CQ50 Notebook PC can't connect now to wifi because the wireless network button located on the right of powr button above the keyword won't turn on. It was working before. I know when it worked because the amber color of the button would change to blue upon pressing it. The button is amber when wireless network is off. And the button is blue when wireless network is on. Tocay, the button's color stll changes to blue when I press it, but whenever I lift my finger the blue color would change back to amber. And I could see wireless networks appear when my finger remains pressing the button and it's blue. And upon lifting my finger and the blue light changes again to amber, all wireless networks would disappear. So it's just a matter of making that button hold the blue color. Is there a shortcut key to turn the wifi connectivity on Compaq Presario CQ50 Notebook PC? If none, can you please tell me what to do? Thank you so much in advance.Read other answers

It seems like you may have bad memory and reinstalling windows will not fix this issue.
What you should try to do is get a copy of MemTest.
Burn it to a CD and check your RAM. Let it test about 3 times, as if it passed 100% once it may not be an accurate result!

My Notebook is HP/Compaq CQ40-323AX. When I seed the windows7, I love it at once. And I have installed win7 to virtual pc. But I want to install win7 to my notebook but not virtuall pc. So some problems occured. It's the driver. Because the win7 was based on the vista, I think it may run well when useing the vista drivers (The drivers were downloaded at www.hp.com.cn)
Who can tell me I can do as I think? It's my thought right?
Or someone can give me a better way!
How is the performance under Vista Ultimate? If you are using Vista Ultimate there should be no problem upgrading or even 'Fresh' installing windows 7.
Yes, a lot of Vista drivers work with Windows 7 (just right-click the setup file and in properties select Compatability for Vista). This works about 90% of the time, if installing build 7068 you may not even need to update your drivers.
NOTE: You will need to backup you existing files (pictured/documents/music/videos etc) and make sure you've got an installation disk for Vista in case the upgrade/install fails.

Try a power drain.
1. Unplug power cord
2. Hold power button in for 60 seconds or more then let go
3. Plug in power cord
4. turn on the power and try to boot to setup (BIOS)
If it enters the BIOS then you should be able to just press F5 to reset to defaults and then F10 to save and exit. The PC should work now.
However, if after the power drain you still can not get in the BIOS than there is a MAJOR problem which would require some type of repair.

I have a bit of a strange issue with my computer. Forgive me if I'm a little too descriptive, but I'm not sure which details are relevant and which are not for such a problem. First, the specs:
Model: eMachines T2984
Operating System: Windows XP Service Pack 2
Processor: Intel Celeron D Processor 340, 2.93 GHZ, 256K L2 Cache, 533 MHZ FSB
Power Supply Unit: Bestec Model: ATX-250-12E REV: P7
Motherboard: I can't tell, but it appears to be an Intel motherboard by the number of Intel labels on it
RAM: 512 MB DDR SD originally, added 1 GB a couple of months ago
Let me know if you need anything else...
Yesterday, I got home from shopping around 1PM, and I tried to start the computer. I pushed the power button, and nothing happened. I checked all of the cords, and they were all plugged in. Not knowing what else to do, I opened up the case to see if there was something obviously wrong. The only thing that I noticed (other than a bunch of dust) was that the power supply unit was still hot. I shut the computer down about 5 hours earlier after about 20 minutes of use, so it seemed strange that the power supply was still hot. I unplugged the computer just in case there was some sort of fire hazard.
At this point, I called a friend who suggested that the problem might be with the motherboard or the power supply unit.
A few hours later, I plugged it back in to try to get it to work. As soon as I plugged it in, the entire unit suddenly started "running" by itsel... Read more
I would suspect that the Power Supply Unit (PSU) is going south. If you have a spare one laying around, install it and see if the problem goes away.
You can buy a new, better PSU from Newegg for about $40.00. I have used a Thermaltake 430 watt in one of my machines for some time now and it works well.
You will have to check the size of your PSU to be sure a new one will fit into the eMachine.
Here's the page with that PSU on it. It's the last one on the list.
I can't turn my computer on. The fans and lights turn on for a second and then turn off. a few seconds later they'll turn back on and then turn back off. I've had this computer for 4+ months now, i built it myself. it recently started doing this but i'd just turn off the PSU (Power Supply Unit) and turn it back on and it woould fix it. now it doesnt fix it anymore. i've re-slotted the RAM (Random Access Memory) and pushed it in firmly, but that hasn't done anything. i've tried different power outlets and pushed everything into the MOBO (Motherboard), i havent messed around with CPU (Processor) because that's just a pain in the a**... i was wondering if there was anything else i could do before having to take it into a local repair shop, lol.
as for my computer specs
CPU (Processor): Fx-6300 AMD
GPU: R9-270x AMD
RAM (Random Access Memory): 8GB Ballistix sport
MOBO (Motherboard): ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0
PSU (Power Supply Unit): Corsair X500 w 80+
Case: Rosewill GALAXY
First, I would unplug everything that isn't necessary. Everything external except for the keyboard and monitor. Internally, just leave the CPU, RAM and video card installed. See if it turns on. If not, you might try and test the power button. Disconnect the power button from the mobo. If the pin headers allow for it, use the reset button as the power button. If not, you can use a flat head screwdriver to power on the computer (cross the two pins for the power button with the blade of the screwdriver). If you do this, just be very careful. Touch only the power button pins and nothing else! You could easily damage components by touching the screwdriver to the wrong thing.
Some motherboards have a power button right on the board that you can press to power on the computer. I looked at a pic of your board and didn't notice one.
If that doesn't do it, plug the power button back in. You might try and play around with the RAM. I don't know if you have 2 or 4 sticks of RAM, but try and boot the computer with only one stick of RAM at a time. If there's a bad stick, you'll find it through this process of elimination.
If none of the above works, then it might be a bad PSU.
I have a Compag Presario SR5010NX using Windows Vista Home Basic.
The computer has been working for over a year with no problem. The problem: Recently when I pressed the On switch, the lights on the Keyboard turn on and then turned off (this is normal for the keyboard). The power supply sent power to all three fans in the computer. But the computer appears to be hibernating or be dead. The switch light on the front panel does not come on. The LCD monitor gets no signal (the light stays amber) etc. I turned the computer on and off several times over a period of several days. I even took the battery out and left it out for several minutes as I think the computer is hibernating and wanted to restore it to ts default state. I also tried pressing the following keys Ctrl+Alt+F7 all to no avail.
Can anyone tell me what to do?
You may want to open the case and Look for a BIOS Jumper. These are small connectors for special features to work, usually black or blue.
Your computer may have a recovery option by moving this jumper around, or taking it off for a single Boot up. If this fixes the issue you want to
remember how to put it back where it was.
BTW make sure the power is OFF before you try this.
Another option would to use a different power supply, one that you know to work.
Compaq Armada 7400 with Win2K OS
Yes, the same laptop with the previous DIAGS partition problem - that was solved! Thanks.
It wasn't in use for a few weeks. Then started it up - no front LED indicator lights - sudden shutdowns - battery not charging - replaced battery - charging fine but still no front LED lights and occasional sudden shutdowns.
"and occasional sudden shutdowns"...
Does this mean that the computer boot into Windows at times even with the panel lights off?
