Microsoft's Redstone update coming in June and October 2016

Q: Microsoft's Redstone update coming in June and October 2016

Microsoft hasn't even released Windows 10 to the general public yet, and the company is already talking about updates. According to a report from Neowin, Microsoft is preparing a series of updates codenamed 'Redstone' that will hit various devices in...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Microsoft's Redstone update coming in June and October 2016

Please don't pull a, "it's windows 8... now it's windows 8.1"

Make it Windows 10, update windows 10, and when that is done have windows 11.

That would conform with the whole windows thing..

There's a new Windows codename on the roadmap: "Redstone."

Brad Sams at Neowin unearthed the existence of the Redstone codename on April 7, calling it the "next Windows update coming in 2016." According to my sources, he's right.

Here's how to think about Redstone, based on what I'm hearing.

Windows 10, which was codenamed "Threshold," will be released this summer, Microsoft execs have said. My sources say there will be a minor update to Threshold some time this fall (which still will be known as "Threshold,"), in addition to the other, smaller regularly released fixes and updates that Microsoft will continue to provide before and after Windows 10 is released to manufacturing as part of its "Windows as a service" model.

A:Microsoft's 'Redstone': An update to Windows 10 due in 2016

Is Redstone the first Windows 10 update?

Quote:

This story has been updated
Windows 10 might be well on the way, but that hasn't stopped Microsoft's next Windows project - codenamed Redstone - from peeking out publicly for the first time.

First reported by Neowin, the Redstone project will be a Windows OS update next year and it's thus far unclear whether it will refresh Windows 10 or be a part of Windows Server 2016. Redstone will be released in two waves, one in June of 2016 and one in October 2016.

The Redstone name itself comes from the Microsoft-owned Minecraft video game where it is a construction "block" and this follows the policy of naming projects after features from games such as Cortana and Spartan from Halo.

I have noticed that the latest upgrade has installed Microsoft Mouse en Keyboard center but that this center does not support the older versions of Microsof Wireless mouse.

Indeed, a fter the upgrade my Microsoft mouse doen not work anymore. According Microsof I can solve that problem by installing IntelliPoint 8.2. After downloading the right IntelliPoint 8.2 my Windows 10 computer refuses to install Intellipoint 8.2.

My PC is 64bits but I am running 32 bits Windows 10. I have downloaded the 32 bit version of Intellipoint.

Windows 10 Pro x64 laptop had updates set to automatically download and then notify. (Still using v. 1511 build 10586 due to continuing reported issues with 1607.) No problems with any updates prior to Oct 2016.

Oct 11 cumulative update KB3192441 apparently failed and gave notice it would "automatically retry later". Download failed again on Oct 12, 13 and 14. Went to Microsoft Update Catalog and downloaded/installed KB3192441 without any apparent issues. But when I opened Settings > Update & security, I saw a brand new notice that "Some settings are managed by your organization" (see screenshot.)

Q1: Why did this happen?

Q2: How do I regain full control over future updates since this laptop is not part of an "organization"?

NOTE: I tried modifying Windows Update settings using this tutorial. No effect on removing the "Some settings are managed by your organization" notice.

Windows Update Automatic Updates - Enable or Disable in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

I also tried using three System Restore Points and two System Images all made prior to Oct 11. They did not have any success in removing the notice. It reappeared as soon as I clicked the "Check for updates" button.

(BTW, going thru the Microsoft Update Catalog resulted in a download of 1.03GB and took almost 6 hours to complete. I understand that MS wants people to have all released updates but this cumulative concept really stinks. End of rant.)

A:October 2016 Cumulative Update Changed Settings

Run CMD as admin and copy/paste:

reg delete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost" /f
reg delete "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate" /f
reg delete "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost" /f

Note, that it will probably appear again, it is related to some Windows Update/Insider settings.

Time remaining <-- empty, why ?
items remaining: 0 (o bytes) <-- why does it never finish delete operation ?

Note: with delete command - as with most Windows 10 commands - verb tenses are wrong, why ?
Example 1:
deleting <-- preparing to delete would be correct
deleted <-- completing deletion would be correct because operation continues even after "100%"!

Verb tenses were mostly wrong also in Windows 8 - why ?
whereas in Windows 7 and earlies Windows versions they were ok - why ?

Example 2:

copied <-- completing copy would be correct because operation continues even after 100% has been copied!

Source: Windows 10 'Redstone 5:' What to expect in Microsoft's next big OS update

What we can expect to see in Microsoft's next update for Windows 10, scheduled for release this fall (Oct/Sept 2018).

Cloud Clipboard
Cloud Clipboard allows you to copy text or a document and have that copied item saved to the cloud for pasting on other devices. This will be optional of course and will work across Windows 10 PC, iOS and Android.

Interestingly, we were originally expecting Cloud Clipboard to show up in Redstone 4, however, due to time constraints, Microsoft decided to wait and give Cloud Clipboard a little more time before shipping. As such, it's possible Microsoft will ship Cloud Clipboard in Redstone 5 instead. But I've heard from sources that Cloud Clipboard could get pushed back again if the infrastructure for it isn't ready in time.

Windows 'Sets'
Microsoft says that "Sets" is a feature it's expecting to debut with Redstone 5. Insiders were able to test an early version of Sets during the development of Redstone 4. However, Sets was never put down as a feature coming in that release. Microsoft opted to wait longer so that it could bake Sets more before releasing it to the public.

Sets allows users to group apps and websites under the same window, just like how tabs work in a web browser. It extends that same tabbing experience to more than just websites, allowing apps like Word, PowerPoint or Slack to be gr... Read more

A:What to Expect in Redstone 5 (October/September 2018 release)

Here's an alternate summary:
- NSA will now have remote access to your clipboard (with log capabilities probably lasting for eternity)
- Many new vulnerabilities will be introduced
- Control Center has been revamped to improve user experience
- A new bloatware will be introduced as a search feature
And much much more to come aside from this

What is the verdict on MSKB3161608 - June 2016 update rollup for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1?

I see that MSKB3161608 includes quite a few patches, including MSKB3161647 - Windows Update Client for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2: June 2016. In the past, I think some people mentioned MS possibly slipping in some Win10 crap with patches to the Windows Update Client.

For Windows 7 SP1 systems that will not be "upgraded" to Windows 10, does MSKB3161608 (or MSKB3161647) include any nasties, Win10 garbage, or MS-suprises?

For Windows 7 SP1 systems that will not be "upgraded" to Windows 10, is MSKB3161608 a recommended install?

A:What is the verdict on MSKB3161608 - June 2016 update rollup?

Hi SevenOfNine

(So, you are referring to Star Trek Voyager)

Actually, you still can upgraded to Windows 10 as this will end on July 2016, as announce.
I refuse to install, as i am used to Windows 7.

I think you can do it, because it keep showing when going to MSN website.
Try it, as it may works.

Sometimes i don't understand why people so like to do update this patch that so on....
When it is good and ready, Windows update will push to your pc, definitely.
You can go > Start --> Windows update, then it pop-up to remind to upgrade to Windows 10 (was downloaded into my pc.)

A:October updates from microsoft update

I've had similar issues since installing the abovementioned patches - starting up after restart has had some strange behaviours like long loading times on a blank screen, and during the first restart after the installation it actually got part way through startup and threw up some message about the registry and restarted.. since then I haven't een that message again.

BUT, since this I also haven't been able to get internet connection at all, using either LAN cable or wireless. I've rebooted many times, and at the time of doing the updates i had been using a LAN cable with no issues before all this. Just got home and same behaviour on wireless - i seem to be connected "locally" but internet wont work, and pinging the gateway or anything else returns "General Failure".

I tried uninstalling the 5 Vista-specific patches (ie, the ones not mentioning office, etc) and made no difference. I'm loathe to uninstall ALL the other patches because I don't know which one is causing this.

Anyone else had this and been able to fix it?

Thanks,
Bron

Microsoft confirms no more Windows 10 feature updates in 2016; two coming in 2017

Microsoft published a TechNet blog post on Tuesday regarding what's new in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. In the article, the company confirmed that it has two feature updates planned for 2017, but no more for this year.

Based on feedback from organizations moving to Windows 10, this will be our last feature update for 2016, with two additional feature updates expected in 2017.

The news is right in line with current rumors. Tuesday's Anniversary Update would be the one feature update for this year, and Redstone 2 - the codename for the next major Windows 10 update - isn't slated to arrive until April 2017. Redstone 3 is rumored as well, but without any release timing, so with today's news, it's presumably late 2017.

It's also in line with what Microsoft has already said. Back in May, the firm said that it would be pushing two feature updates for Windows 10 every year.

The obvious question that you're probably asking is, if Microsoft said that it would release two updates per year, why would the company only release one this year? Well, when Microsoft says the word 'year', it could mean a calendar year, or it could mean a fiscal year, which would be over at the end of June. With that in mind, the firm has released two major updates for Windows 10 every year, and is on pace to do so, even with Redstone 2 coming in April.

Hi,

I have the following updates (see attached)

I can install the updates fine but when restarting and logging in I see a blank white screen and windows media personalized settings box.

Only way to get desktop up is to boot up in safe mode and to fix do a system restore.

I am running Windows 7 Home x64.

Any ideas on why these updates are causing these problems?

Thanks.

Chris

Custom built and delivered yesterday. My new XPS15, which I made sure to turn on with full battery charge today says battery 78% depleted already, after only 3 hours of operation.  Most of that time on BATTERY SAVER.  I too, am a bit concerned about the gap between advertised battery life and reality.  I will let you know when it is fully depleted and how long it really lasted.

Has anyone been able to get the June 2016 updates for Windows 7 by the normal "Checking for updates" method?

I haven't have any trouble obtaining the June 2016 updates for Windows XP and Windows 10, but Windows 7 is a different story.

I heard that Microsoft was going to change the way that Windows 7 users start receiving monthly updates, and apparently it has.

i love my T520.  i love my X220.  this week Windows 10 no longer functions right on either of them!  The Conexant drivers were uninstalled and Windows generic audiopoint driver put in its place.  Windows 10 updates drivers with no notification.  And the only way I knew this had happened, was all my audio went sour -- tinny high pitches and echoing ...so I check the drivers.  Knew i had installed the Conexant drivers when setting up the systems. But instead of Conexant drivers, there is a Microsoft installation, with a warning when you try to get driver details of "no device drivers are necessary for this device." I'm operating on the assumption that this HAS to be happening to other users -- have you noticed your sound going bad in Windows 10 recently?  Is on both my Thinkpads that have Conexant sound boards.MS won't allow the reinstall of the Conexant drivers.  All audio enhancements are turned off.  In fact, i have to turn the enhancements on again and play with the equalizer to try and get more bass and less screaching.  It still sounds awful.Conexant boards are also in the newer T series and E series.... so surely this is being noted in others that upgraded to Windows 10? The Windows 10 Conexant driver available from Lenovo website no longer works or installs at all.  HELP HELP HELP HELP ....i have tried everything.  even used linux to go in and remove ms audioendpoint applications.  i ca... Hello all, I need some help, I am having an issue with 2 workstations.

1 Physical Windows 7 Pro x86
1 Virtual Windows 7 Pro x64

When I try to install the update KB3185330 the workstation reboots and eventually I get the message on the screen "Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer" error when you try to install Windows updates.

I did run the MS fix it tool and I still get the error.

Any ideas?

Read the report very carefully and judge for yourself.

This is first test to be seen for Webroot in a very long time.

"MRG Effitas was commissioned by Webroot to conduct a comparative assessment. Webroot commissioned MRG Effitas for a comparative analysis of its Webroot SecureAnywhere Antivirus product, and Microsoft Defender."

https://www.mrg-effitas.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/Webroot_vs_Microsoft_report.pdf

Take note of where journaling and rollback does not\cannot revert system; Webroot marketing materials state this protection will revert system "perfectly."

The following information was excerpted from several sources, cited at the end of the post:
From October 2016 onwards, Microsoft will release a single CUMULATIVE Monthly Rollup Update for (each version of) Windows, that addresses both security issues and reliability issues... each update will supersede [and include] the previous month’s release, [so] you'll only need to install the latest single rollup to be up to date. Indeed, Microsoft says that over time, they will gradually add-on prior patches too, so that these monthly updates will eventually become fully cumulative; but it may take a year or more for the process of previous-patch-inclusion to be completed.
What this means is that individual patches will no longer be available --- to patch your system, you must accept ALL the releases for the month in a single patch... This change is rather significant... and considering that Microsoft has released a few bad patches in the past couple of years that have broken fundamental features of Windows, this change may not sit well with IT Pros [nor consumers].
Hardware drivers are the one potential exception; see How to stop Windows 7 automatically installing drivers https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2500967
Likewise, the .NET Framework will also follow the Monthly Rollup model [which will] deliver both security and reliability updates to all versions of the .NET Framework as a single monthly release. It is important to note that the rollup for the .... Read more

Just wondering if anyone ran across this. Since deploying the June patches to about 100 machines, 20 or so now have the Action Center popping up complaining about backups (we don't use backups) and Windows Update being disabled by the system administrator
(we use SCCM to deploy patches). Has anyone else seen this behavior. We can certainly hide Action Center through a GPO (and probably will), but I'm just curious where this is coming from suddenly.
