Which bios version - Windows or DOS - to use for updating?

Q: Which bios version - Windows or DOS - to use for updating?

Dell has released a new bios version A06 for my laptop M101z (Inspiron 1120). The Windows version is 2.7MB whlle the DOS version is 1.7 MB.

The flashing procedure is the same for both. Click on the .exe file, extract it to C:\DELL\DRIVERS\R300552, In the START>RUN text box type C:\DELL\DRIVERS\R300552 and press ENTER.

What is the difference between the Windows version and the DOS version as the install/flash procedure is the same?

Which one should I use for flashing the bios?

Preferred Solution: Which bios version - Windows or DOS - to use for updating?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Which bios version - Windows or DOS - to use for updating?

Windows based .exe's have a higher rate of causing a bad flash, mostly due to some sanfu while the OS is running.

That's why the Dos version is generally considered a safer way to flash. Less potential conflicts.

Win based ones are fine when they work, but as mentioned above, there is simply a higher level of risk.

Hi guys, I have a Dell Inspiron n4110(dual graphics) already 3 years old still good not until I upgraded the BIOS to A12 through dell website.
The symptoms after upgrade were BSOD atikmpag, sys error during start up but if its other VGA which is the AMD RADEON 6630M will be disabled BSOD will not occur which means the other vga which is the Intel hd 3000 is good. I tried update the AMD RADEON driver and CATALYST CONTROL CENTER but still have the same error.
Now one thing, since the error happened when I updated the BIOS to A12 , I tried to revert back to an older BIOS but one thing I've noticed, that its battery is already at 7% plugged in, not charging error and it needs 10% above battery to downgrade BIOS version. Even using DOS to downgrade BIOS is impossible since DELL BIOS update will work only on windows OS.
Anyone on DELL would help me on this? I would really appreciate your help..

Hi, I recently had an issue with my precision 5510 motherboard (installed BIOS 1.16), dell replaced the motherboard but strangely the technician loaded BIOS version 1.02 and since then I have tried number of time to update the BIOS to latest version. The issue happens once the BIOS is updated, but at boot up SSD is not recognized. I have send so many emails to dell technicians but no result, if any one can suggest on this, I will really appreciate.

Hi,
I am posting to share my experience of my computer freezing during upgrade to BIOS v. A08 from v. A07. After downloading the update from Dell support page, I attempted to update BIOS from within Windows. The BIOS program began to flash the upgrade, my computer cooling fans both began to run at full speed, but then the update froze at 40% complete during the 'verify' phase of the update.  I waited for about 30 minutes, but nothing changed...so I decided to try the power button, but it was unresponsive.
At this point my computer was frozen, with both fans running full speed, and I had no way to power down the laptop. I didn't have any tools with me to remove the bottom cover and disconnect the battery...so all I could do was wait. Eventually (after about 45-60 minutes more), a screen I had never seen before, informed me that it was necessary to restart the computer. My display turned off, but the computer didn't restart.
After waiting for another hour, both fans still running full speed, I decided to disconnect the power supply and allow the battery to drain, as it was the only way that I could think of to get the laptop to power down. Two hours later the laptop finally shut down.
I reconnected the power supply and surprisingly...the laptop stared normally. I fully expected to have a hardware issue, as I have heard that flashing BIOS unsuccessfully with require a chip replacement. I ran all of the pre-boot diagnostics and no issues were fo... Read more

I also experienced this identical issue; after realizing that the power button was unresponsive, I unplugged the power and let the battery run down. I was surprised to see that the update had "completed" - I did reflash A08 to make that it was at the right level - and now the laptop seems to run fine. I see that A08 has been pulled from the Dell Support web site so perhaps this failure had something to do with others experiencing this problem.

Hello Everyone ,,

I'm a computer programmer and I have a database program for pharmacy >>

The problem is on a customer's computer with Windows 7 64 Bit I installed the version 1.2 for example .. then I wanted to replace it with version 1.3 !!!

After replacing the files when lunching it >> it's still 1.2 !

Can any one HELP me ?!!!

A:Problem updating program version in windows 7 64Bit

I don't think the issue has anything with whether the OS is 64 or 32 bit, I as well as many others update both 64 or 32 bit software/programs all the time and have no issues running a 64-bit OS (Windows 7).

Now I'm not a programmer but what I think may be your issue is how the program is coded, and whether it's updating the files it needs to update.

In short, you may have to look at your code and make sure you have it setup to install, execute, and or update at either the 32 or 64 bit level.

You might also make sure it's not skipping any files, which it sounds like it is by not updating the version numbers.

Again, I'm no programmer so....

My two cents.

This is an old HP PC I have recently upgraded from XP to Windows 7 and I have to say it has never run better

I have an ASUSTek A7N8X-LA motherboard with ver. 3.05 BIOS and an AMD Athlon™ 2600+ processor

I want to upgrade to the latest BIOS that supports SSE2 instructions (for game playing purposes), however, I have run into a snag that the most recent BIOS ver 3.21 is still only XP compatible. Neither ASUS or HP are willing to provide any free support.

This is somewhat frustrating as the BIOS in situ appears to be the original 2003 version. I could have easily updated this to the latest version before I upgraded the OS to Windows 7, but now it is to late.

Q. Dare I use the XP BIOS and what steps can I take to protect against permanent disaster if things go wrong?

Can anyone advise me please?

A:Updating BIOS on Windows 7 PC

<<...but now it is to late.>>

Why?

There is no direct upgrade path from XP to Win 7...so installing Win 7 had to leave the XP install intact, if you used the upgrade version of Win 7.

If it's an HP system, you should have recovery/restore disks that would allow reversion to XP. At that time, the BIOS update could be done...but if that update only supports XP...I don't see what is gained...unless you just run XP.

Sounds to me like a new motherboard/CPU/RAM combo is needed here, not an updated O/S. It's hard to bring computer technology from over 8 years ago...into 2011 performance/capabilities, IMO.

Okay so I'm having some problems with a computer my mom brought from her uncles. I'm not gonna give the whole story but he gave this computer to my mom and she doesn't want it.

First, I want to say that this computer has the Windows 8 beta on it as its only OS. It's very clunky and full of bugs and whatnot and I want it off so I'm putting windows 7 on it and erasing everything on it. This shouldn't be a problem for these forums since everything I"m having problems with has nothing to do with the OS. Besides installing.

Now, basically this computers main parts are better than my own (it's not that great anyway) It's motherboard is x65 bit, it had 2 gb 800 mhz ram (my computer had the same amount but only 667mhz) it's processor is 3.00 GHz (mine is 2.3 GHz)

So basically it's a better computer for the main parts. I've not looked at the PSU but I'm sure it's better aswell. The only thing that isn't better is the graphics card. It's a 7 series while mine is a 9.

So, basically I want to put the best of my computer to this better one. Mine feels newer (since I keep it dusted so it sounds really smooth, while this one sounds a bit old. But either way I want to install windows on it. The only problem is that the BIOS is inoperable. When loading into the BIOS the keyboard no longer seems to work. Its light go off. But every once in a while on trying, I can get it into the boot menu so I can move it to put from CD rom. But at this point, no matter what, it won't let me scro... Read more

A:MSI Mobo BIOS Updating Through Windows...

If you reboot, and the BIOS is in fact corrupt, you won't get stuck in a boot loop.

You will get stuck with no-POST, much worse than a boot loop.

What is the model of your motherboard? I can find its internal technicians manual and find out if there is a disaster recovery method. Sometimes they're very easy to perform.

Don't reboot that computer until I find out first, just in case the chip was erased but not flashed, or returns a bad checksum.

For an OEM system, deactivation after a bios update would point to a modded bios being used earlier. However, you have not filed up your system specs. Please run this tool, click Continue, click Copy, then paste the results here or paste into notepad and upload the text file.

Only reverting to Legacy Boot allows me to boot. How do I configure Windows 10 to boot with UEFI? My Older BIOS was F.0A, new one is F.2E.  This BIOS also fixes the battery indicator, so I would perfer to stay in it.

I your Bios has the option of udma up to 6 then generally the bios supports the Mode! and your problem is that the HDD does not support the mode (cant remember if you said it does).

You are probably using wrong criteria for bios upgrade search.
Try WWW.driverguide,com

You Need the MB's Manufacturers Name or at least the MB Chipset and bios Manufacturers Name as well. go to the Computers muanufacturers website (you probably done that already) and search model.

otherwise Download a System info utility from Tech Spot, I use SiSoft Sandra or AIDA32.. (sandra might cause bluescreen on older machines).. Aida problably will have link direct to bios update site. hope this was of some help

Windows 10 has been running fine for some time, but attempt to update to Anniversary fails. The update runs fine until the point after restart where it states "The machine will restart several times"; soon into that sequence when  attempting a restart, the machine switches itself off instead. When I then switch it back on manually, the update is lost and the system resets itself to the previous Windows version.A Microsoft technician worked for hours before concluding that I would have to do a full, clean WIndows 10 installation, after which all files and applications would be lost and needed to be reinstalled. I have been wondering if the faulty restart behaviour is related to the BIOS somehow, and I have had it reinstalled from HPs site with no change. So, my questions areCan BIOS be the cause? Btw, I have turned the fast restart option (under power schemes) off.I note that I got a "legacy" BIOS installed. Is UEFI available for this laptop, and would that make a difference? If I do install UEFI, will Windows 10 and applications run as before or could other issues arise?

When you go to the following link: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds018884 and scroll about 3/4 of the way down the webpage, it says that there is a v1.41 version of the BIOS (as shown below), and it also says that v1.41 is the current version of the BIOS, however there is no link to download v1.41 of the BIOS or the accompanying readme.txt file like there is say for v1.40 of the BIOS - see below: Package | UEFI BIOS              | ECP                             |    Release1.41        | 1.41 (8BET61WW) | 1.36 (8AHT42WW)    | Current Release 1.40        | 1.40 (8BET60WW) | 1.36 (8AHT42WW)    | 8buj19us.exe                                                  | 8buj19us.txt Also at the very top of the same webpage, it says that v1.42 is the current version of the BIOS NOT v1.41.  If you look at the Readme.txt file, it indicates that there was indeed a v1.41 of the BIOS released, however version 1.41 of the BIOS is ... Hello

Im new here. I wasnt able to find an answer in a similar thread.

Im trying to install a wireless desktop network card on a moderately old computer - Win 98 SE, 128Mb RAM and it turns out the PCI slot version is probably not 2.1 or better which means the card wont function.

I thought I would have to buy a new motherboard (sigh) but the Belkin guy told me it was possible to change the slots and put in new ones.

Is this possible? How do I find out how to do this? I am finding it hard to find info on Google.

Thanks for any help you might give me.

I am no hardware expert but I cannot phathom on how you would do such a thing. It is usually dependent on your motherboards chipset. There is no way you are going to be able to replace the chipset.

I've sent away for the new version of Ubuntu 8.04, not the Beta version, the complete new version. Will I encounter any problems inserting the CD to update my present Ubuntu 7.10 version and not affect my updates and present additional programs already installed? I get the feeling that when I install the CD, it will start up like a new install and format everything or am I incorrect on that assumption?

As always with an upgrade like that, do a complete backup first!

I noticed yesterday (January 20th) that MSE had not updated its definitions like it always does automatically every day. Finding that odd, I ran a manual update and still did not find any definition updates. I decided to give this the benefit of the doubt however, since at that point the definitions were only 1 day old; maybe things were slow yesterday?

Today, the January 21st, MSE is still not detecting any definition updates on Windows Update and MSE is reporting that the definitions are 2 days old, a clear sign that the definitions are getting dated even by MSE's standards.

Now usually, MS releases around 2~4 definition updates every day on average. I therefore find it particularly strange and uncomforting that MSE has still not found a definition update after 2 days of no updates. I tried Googling and looking on MS's website to see if something was up, but I found nothing from a quick look. I know that this isn't just my computer acting like a troll since I also tried updating my laptop's MSE and it too had the same issue of no updates, my mother's laptop's MSE is also not updating, effectively ruling out the possibility of a local issue.

I've attached screenshots of my MSE's update tab and "About" window for reference.

So thus the million dollar question: Is MS simply being lazy about their definition updates? Is the virus scene being strangely stagnant? Is support for MSE suddenly being pulled? Was Windows Update compromised?

I am not sure about... Read more

Hi
I'm struggling to upgrade emet to v5.2 from v4.1 (update1). I've tried an update application for v5.2 over the top of the existing install using a SCCM Application deployment(didn't work), I've tried uninstalling v4.1 using the msiexec guid number from the
registry on the client (didn't work - although this is a preferred method to uninstall and generally always work!).
If I run the installer for v5.2 on the client with v4.1 I am able to install the new version.
Is there a good guidelines on how to perform such an upgrade? The upgrade is to be performed using SCCM 2012 R2 to a Windows 7 environment, to approximately 2500 desktop and laptops. Laptops are running mixture of bitlocker and checkpoint encryption.

Version 4.1 has not been installed using SCCM although the new v5.2 will need installing via SCCM
The upgrade of this software appears poorly documented and therefore any assistance would be much appreciated.
Regards,
John Mills

Chrome OS Version 55 has been out for all Chrome OS devices, according to this link, since December 9, 2016.  My R11 is still on Version 54.0.2840.101 and will not update to Version 55, even using the manual update.  Our other Chrome OS devices (not Acer R11 machines) have all updated. Is there a known constraint keeping the R11 from updating to the latest version of Chrome OS, or is my particular unit one of the few (or the only) not updating? Thank you! Cheers,Jason

We're trying to update our Act database from Act 2000 to Act 10. During the import of the data we get an error showing that there are 6 or 7 orphan links, attachments that are no longer available on the network. Although these are 6 or 7 links out of a database with 12000 records the import just shuts down.

We've tried a few different things to try to resolve the issue:

1. Tried to run RedFlags. The software runs for about 30 minutes then posts an error about mismatched data 13.

2. Tried to reindex or compress the database in Act 2000 but get an warning message that there may not be enough memory to perform the task and that a mapped drive is needed. The disk has about 100 gigs available, and there is a network drive mapped to the PC with another 300 gigs available.

3. Tried to import the database into Act 6.03 and get the message that it isn't an Act database, and the import drops most of the custom fields in the database.

These issues are driving me nuts! Can anyone offer any suggestions to proceed??

Thank you in advance.

Configuration:

Windows PC running XP SP2
2 Gigs of Memory
160 GB HD
Act 2000

Trying to update to new PC:
Windows 7
4 Gigs Mem
160 Gig HD
AMD 3.6Ghz
Act 10

A:Solved: Updating to newer version of Act

You shouldn't import to Act! 6.03, you need to convert. See:

Hi, since the newest version of Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop, I can't use the GPU performance feature. It tells me that I have an comparable GPU available. Update driver to use GPU performance.
The issue is that windows, and intel both say that my drivers are up to date.
It says the version installed is 10.18.10.4276 however, when I download the newest drivers from intel, it says they are version 15.33.42.4358. So when I install it, it keeps going back to version 10.18.10.4276
The computer I have is an dell inspiron 660, it's got an i5 @ 3.0 ghz and an intel (r) hd graphics 2500 with 2gb of ram.

Would appreciate some help, it's been bugging me. GPU performance features really help my workflow.

A:Graphics card not updating to newest version

Hi, I'm a bit confused by "The issue is that windows, and intel both say that my drivers are up to date." and then mention 2newest drivers from intel, it says they are version 15.33.42.4358."

My interpretation is:
Windows insists on you having vn 10.18.10.4276, but there is a later version available from Intel. If you install the later version, Windows replaces it with vn 10.18.10.4276.

Assuming that you want the later version, you will have realised that Windows has taken control of driver versions, and Uncle MS will replace your driver if yours isn't the MS approved version- whether older or newer.

This lets you disable particular updates:
Windows Updates - Hide or Show in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums
Use this to hide the update you don't want, then apply the driver update.

This turns off all driver updates (not really what you want to do)
Device Driver Automatic Installation - Turn On or Off in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

Or does that have to downloaded separately?

And what is the "KB" Number for version 1511 Threshold-2?
Thanks in advance

I then clik on the link to get the latest version of the flash player.
