Which bios version - Windows or DOS - to use for updating?

Q: Which bios version - Windows or DOS - to use for updating?

Dell has released a new bios version A06 for my laptop M101z (Inspiron 1120). The Windows version is 2.7MB whlle the DOS version is 1.7 MB.

The flashing procedure is the same for both. Click on the .exe file, extract it to C:\DELL\DRIVERS\R300552, In the START>RUN text box type C:\DELL\DRIVERS\R300552 and press ENTER.

What is the difference between the Windows version and the DOS version as the install/flash procedure is the same?

Which one should I use for flashing the bios?

Preferred Solution: Which bios version - Windows or DOS - to use for updating?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Which bios version - Windows or DOS - to use for updating?

Windows based .exe's have a higher rate of causing a bad flash, mostly due to some sanfu while the OS is running.

That's why the Dos version is generally considered a safer way to flash. Less potential conflicts.

Win based ones are fine when they work, but as mentioned above, there is simply a higher level of risk.

Hi guys, I have a Dell Inspiron n4110(dual graphics) already 3 years old still good not until I upgraded the BIOS to A12 through dell website.
The symptoms after upgrade were BSOD atikmpag, sys error during start up but if its other VGA which is the AMD RADEON 6630M will be disabled BSOD will not occur which means the other vga which is the Intel hd 3000 is good. I tried update the AMD RADEON driver and CATALYST CONTROL CENTER but still have the same error.
Now one thing, since the error happened when I updated the BIOS to A12 , I tried to revert back to an older BIOS but one thing I've noticed, that its battery is already at 7% plugged in, not charging error and it needs 10% above battery to downgrade BIOS version. Even using DOS to downgrade BIOS is impossible since DELL BIOS update will work only on windows OS.
Anyone on DELL would help me on this? I would really appreciate your help..

I am posting to share my experience of my computer freezing during upgrade to BIOS v. A08 from v. A07. After downloading the update from Dell support page, I attempted to update BIOS from within Windows. The BIOS program began to flash the upgrade, my computer cooling fans both began to run at full speed, but then the update froze at 40% complete during the 'verify' phase of the update.  I waited for about 30 minutes, but nothing changed...so I decided to try the power button, but it was unresponsive.
At this point my computer was frozen, with both fans running full speed, and I had no way to power down the laptop. I didn't have any tools with me to remove the bottom cover and disconnect the battery...so all I could do was wait. Eventually (after about 45-60 minutes more), a screen I had never seen before, informed me that it was necessary to restart the computer. My display turned off, but the computer didn't restart.
After waiting for another hour, both fans still running full speed, I decided to disconnect the power supply and allow the battery to drain, as it was the only way that I could think of to get the laptop to power down. Two hours later the laptop finally shut down.
I reconnected the power supply and surprisingly...the laptop stared normally. I fully expected to have a hardware issue, as I have heard that flashing BIOS unsuccessfully with require a chip replacement. I ran all of the pre-boot diagnostics and no issues were fo... Read more

A:XPS 15 9530 crash during updating BIOS to version A08

I also experienced this identical issue; after realizing that the power button was unresponsive, I unplugged the power and let the battery run down. I was surprised to see that the update had "completed" - I did reflash A08 to make that it was at the right level - and now the laptop seems to run fine. I see that A08 has been pulled from the Dell Support web site so perhaps this failure had something to do with others experiencing this problem.

Hello Everyone ,,

I'm a computer programmer and I have a database program for pharmacy >>

The problem is on a customer's computer with Windows 7 64 Bit I installed the version 1.2 for example .. then I wanted to replace it with version 1.3 !!!

After replacing the files when lunching it >> it's still 1.2 !

Can any one HELP me ?!!!

A:Problem updating program version in windows 7 64Bit

I don't think the issue has anything with whether the OS is 64 or 32 bit, I as well as many others update both 64 or 32 bit software/programs all the time and have no issues running a 64-bit OS (Windows 7).

Now I'm not a programmer but what I think may be your issue is how the program is coded, and whether it's updating the files it needs to update.

In short, you may have to look at your code and make sure you have it setup to install, execute, and or update at either the 32 or 64 bit level.

You might also make sure it's not skipping any files, which it sounds like it is by not updating the version numbers.

Again, I'm no programmer so....

My two cents.

This is an old HP PC I have recently upgraded from XP to Windows 7 and I have to say it has never run better

I have an ASUSTek A7N8X-LA motherboard with ver. 3.05 BIOS and an AMD Athlon™ 2600+ processor

I want to upgrade to the latest BIOS that supports SSE2 instructions (for game playing purposes), however, I have run into a snag that the most recent BIOS ver 3.21 is still only XP compatible. Neither ASUS or HP are willing to provide any free support.

This is somewhat frustrating as the BIOS in situ appears to be the original 2003 version. I could have easily updated this to the latest version before I upgraded the OS to Windows 7, but now it is to late.

Q. Dare I use the XP BIOS and what steps can I take to protect against permanent disaster if things go wrong?

Can anyone advise me please?

A:Updating BIOS on Windows 7 PC

<<...but now it is to late.>>

There is no direct upgrade path from XP to Win 7...so installing Win 7 had to leave the XP install intact, if you used the upgrade version of Win 7.

If it's an HP system, you should have recovery/restore disks that would allow reversion to XP. At that time, the BIOS update could be done...but if that update only supports XP...I don't see what is gained...unless you just run XP.

Sounds to me like a new motherboard/CPU/RAM combo is needed here, not an updated O/S. It's hard to bring computer technology from over 8 years ago...into 2011 performance/capabilities, IMO.

I just received a DELL Optiplex 9010 with WIN 7 installed. I was a bit rushed and thought updating the Bios would be a good idea and didn't realise I was installing v A01, so a downgrade..

Now I can not start windows, when the PC starts it begins to boot but soon after the loading windows icons start there is a blue screen (stating to check the hard drives for errors..) and the machine goes to the Windows Error Recovery screen. I've tried to use the Launch Startup Repair tool but it doesn't seem to find anything wrong..

Not sure what to do from this point? Is there a way I can install the correct version of the bios for this machine?

I updated my BIOS through windows using MSI's Live Update 6 software and it has been stuck on this screen for about 30 minutes...
Is this normal? I'm scared to reboot it because I'm concerned about getting stuck in a possible boot loop.
Any ideas?

A:MSI Mobo BIOS Updating Through Windows...

If you reboot, and the BIOS is in fact corrupt, you won't get stuck in a boot loop.

You will get stuck with no-POST, much worse than a boot loop.

What is the model of your motherboard? I can find its internal technicians manual and find out if there is a disaster recovery method. Sometimes they're very easy to perform.

Don't reboot that computer until I find out first, just in case the chip was erased but not flashed, or returns a bad checksum.

but it says: "This BIOS update should be installed before upgrading to Microsoft? Windows Vista? operating system.", which is making me worried to do the bios update as I already have upgraded to vista. (the laptop was shipped with xp on it)
I asked a computer techie and he said its nonsense and I should update it the normal way by flash memory at the boot time.

Okay so I'm having some problems with a computer my mom brought from her uncles. I'm not gonna give the whole story but he gave this computer to my mom and she doesn't want it.

First, I want to say that this computer has the Windows 8 beta on it as its only OS. It's very clunky and full of bugs and whatnot and I want it off so I'm putting windows 7 on it and erasing everything on it. This shouldn't be a problem for these forums since everything I"m having problems with has nothing to do with the OS. Besides installing.

Now, basically this computers main parts are better than my own (it's not that great anyway) It's motherboard is x65 bit, it had 2 gb 800 mhz ram (my computer had the same amount but only 667mhz) it's processor is 3.00 GHz (mine is 2.3 GHz)

So basically it's a better computer for the main parts. I've not looked at the PSU but I'm sure it's better aswell. The only thing that isn't better is the graphics card. It's a 7 series while mine is a 9.

So, basically I want to put the best of my computer to this better one. Mine feels newer (since I keep it dusted so it sounds really smooth, while this one sounds a bit old. But either way I want to install windows on it. The only problem is that the BIOS is inoperable. When loading into the BIOS the keyboard no longer seems to work. Its light go off. But every once in a while on trying, I can get it into the boot menu so I can move it to put from CD rom. But at this point, no matter what, it won't let me scro... Read more

For an OEM system, deactivation after a bios update would point to a modded bios being used earlier. However, you have not filed up your system specs. Please run this tool, click Continue, click Copy, then paste the results here or paste into notepad and upload the text file.

A:Bios update fail. Blank screen while updating bios

Please check and see if you can get into BIOS. By the way list Dell model number and version of window. Ex: Dell Inspiron 3543, windows 10
1. Power off computer
2. Power on computer, quickly start tapping F2 key continuously. Hopefully, you'll be able to see BIOS screen.

Hello, Yesterday I updated the bios to version 2.18 , and now I'm confused what's  different in this version?According to release notes  Intel ME FW  was updates to version  and some other ME related changes. But after update I see bios version reported as 2.18 (good)  but ME FW Version is still !Is this expected? This BIOS is marked as critical/urgent, so now I would like to know what's going on?Does the bios iso file contain the wrong bios file, or do the release notes not match the bios release, maybe  different version / machine?  Thank you

Windows 10 has been running fine for some time, but attempt to update to Anniversary fails. The update runs fine until the point after restart where it states "The machine will restart several times"; soon into that sequence when  attempting a restart, the machine switches itself off instead. When I then switch it back on manually, the update is lost and the system resets itself to the previous Windows version.A Microsoft technician worked for hours before concluding that I would have to do a full, clean WIndows 10 installation, after which all files and applications would be lost and needed to be reinstalled. I have been wondering if the faulty restart behaviour is related to the BIOS somehow, and I have had it reinstalled from HPs site with no change. So, my questions areCan BIOS be the cause? Btw, I have turned the fast restart option (under power schemes) off.I note that I got a "legacy" BIOS installed. Is UEFI available for this laptop, and would that make a difference? If I do install UEFI, will Windows 10 and applications run as before or could other issues arise?
