Keyboard and trackpad not responding Compaq presario CQ60

Q: Keyboard and trackpad not responding Compaq presario CQ60

Help!My keyboard and trackpad on my Compaq Presario CQ60 notebook are not responding and don't have any external devices to see whether this is an internal matter. Cannot restart in Safe Mode as keyboard does not respond, however it allows me to type in my password to access vista! I think I have just locked the computer, but don't know how to unlock it, various forums have specified reinstalling drivers etc. but I am unable to do this with no working keyboard and do not know how whether I have pressed a combination of keys which have caused this. I am not sure whether this is a Vista problem or a Compaq/HP problem.Any help's immensly appreciated!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

as far as i know, if you can type in your password on the log-on screen then the keyboard is working, if the problem would appear after logging in or it will appear when you are on your desktop screen then it may be an operating system problem or a user account corruption issue the keyboard would only be a hardware failure if when you turn on your nb, there will be no ligts on teh keyboard, capslock key will not lit or no response at all from the moment you turn on the nb for the touchpad, try to check if its off or on... if there is an orange light above the touchpad then its off, toggle the switch on that light to turn it to blue.. so before anything else.. TRY THIS FIRST!!!!1. remove the battery2. disconnect the power adapter3. with no power supply at all, press and hold the power button for 1 min.. make sure it will be 1 min... in technical terms we call this HARD RESET.. this process would release static charges that might be contained on the power button bec sometimes those static charges causes harware malfunctionalities.. then it this step will not work.. do this... try to go to safe mode by continually pressing F8 when booting (press F8 when you see hp invent screen), then you'll be directed to advance boot options... choose last known good config.. then it will boot to last known good settings.... please let me know if this will not work.. if not "choose repair your computer" on the boot selections.. choose keyboard layout as US.. then if asked for a username and password.. you can cahnge the administrator username to your username then put in your password.. if you are not using any password leave it blank.. then choose start-up repair... please let me know if this will not work.. Hope this helps.....................

I am also having problems connecting to a brand new Virgin Mobile MiFi2200. Everything is registered and set up properly, as I am running our old HP Pavilion on it as we speak, but it will not allow my Compaq to connect. The message says"this computer is connected to VirginMobile MiFi2200 4DC Secure but does not have access to the internet.- If you are connecting to a wireless hotspot you might need to open a web browser to finish connecting."
After speaking to Virgin for 4 hours over the last 2 days, and spending 2-1/2 hours with the Geek Squad today, I am back to square one. Anyone else have this problem, or better yet, have any suggestions??

Thanks,
Jeff

First suggestion is that you will have better luck getting help with your own thread instead of tacked onto a Solved one. I've started one for you here.

Please show for both PCs ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista or 7 type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

ok so i have a compaq presario cq60 which is the biggest lemon ive had.

first problems started when the warranty went out like that same day it said the battery need replacing i ignored it and it started dying like 3 minutes after being unplugged but it says it has 98% battery life so i leave it plugged up always.
next i started getting the blue screen of death like all the time until it started happening so often i couldnt even use it.
so i took the hard drive from my Toshiba and put in it (toshiba laptop had beer spilt in it and stopped working) and that stopped the blue screen but have me two other issues.
one it says my windows is not genuine which it is it was pre downloaded when i got it
and two the sound doesnt work not the speakers nor the headphone jack ( but i tried usb headphones and they worked fine but they werent mine)
so please someeone help me with this issues its real annoying

Hi and welcome to the Forum. So you took a HD from one laptop to another with the original Windows 7 loaded up? If that is the case then you have an OEM Windows 7 that is only licensed for the PC that it was originally loaded into. It is not legal to use it on another machine.

Hi,  This is now an old laptop, maybe 7 years old, but hardly used and perfectly functioning on Windows 7. However, I want to update it to Windows 10.   I believe it is no longer free, but will cost me about £100. My question is - is my laptop compatible with Windows 10.  I don't want to buy it over the internet and its not compatible. Many thanks. Mary Ann

A:Compaq Presario CQ60 - is it compatible with Windows 10??

Hi,Officially I do not think Hp releases any windows 10 drivers. However I have installed win 10 on systems much older than yours and usually it is sufficient to let Microsoft install the drivers for all the devices automatically. Sometimes (rarely) it can be necessary to install drivers from other sources such as the manufacturer of the various devices or drivers released for different computers which have the same device.Anyway you can try to install windows 10 for free initially by downloading it from Microsoft. Create a small partition on your harddrive of about 20 gb and install win 10 in dualboot and see if everything works correctly and then subsequently you can choose to wipe the drive and reinstall Win 10 or delete the win 10 installation and continue with 7.In my opinion win10 will work fine.https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 Let me know if you need any further help,David

Hi,Different models have different power requirements 65W or 90 W. You can see on page 1-5 of service manua.http://www.notebook-manuals.com/laptop-manuals/service_manual_for_COMPAQ_Presario_CQ%2060_f90f2aca5c_Compaq%20CQ60.pdf So you can get one of 90w which will be good for all models. The best idea is to buy them online where the prices are cheaper or even get a good universal adapter. Example:https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=Compaq+Presario+CQ60+ac+adapter Hope it helps,David

So, I have a Compaq presario CQ-60 running windows 7 home premium. I have been troubled by monitor flicker. its seemingly random. happens in pulses. almost like a block or grid flashes up on the screen, and it disappears. pretty frequently. in irregular places at irregular times. like I said, frequent but very random. I have a second monitor connected to the laptop's output, my dell HD 22 from my desk top and there is no flicker seen on that screen. I have opened the laptop and checked for loose, damaged wiring. it all inspects OK. ( I am pretty good with electronics) I am at the point where i am beginning to suspect my inverter circuitry is to blame because the monitor output does not flicker, so that should tend to isolate the trouble to the laptop's display circuitry. right? I figured since the display is bright, not discolored at all, and the inverter is supposedly hi voltage circuitry it just tends to seem logical that it could cause this random flickering because of the voltage or whatever. I tested the ram chips one at a time and they are OK. I also tested the HD with the segate downloadable diagnostics tool, and it passed the SMART test. anyways, anyone care to offer an opinion or question before I order a $15 dollar inverter chip? the computer has 2GB ram, intel celeron processor 900 @ 2.2ghz graphics is powered by Mobile Intel 45 Express Chipset Family (WDDM1.1) driver v. 8.15.10.1749any opin... There are strange noises coming from the inside of my laptop. It makes a crackly noise like static and a screeching noise like a fax machine or an old modem.

It doesn't happen all the time, but it's worrying me. There's a history to this. I bought a laptop a couple of weeks before Christmas, but it seized up and refused to boot either normally or from the recovery drive. This happened within 2 days of buying it and shortly after hearing noises like those I've got now.

The first one couldn't be repaired but it was exchanged, no-quibble - immediately, so I've had this one for a few weeks. The fact that I'm hearing strange noises now from this replacement makes me think that either it's normal and was nothing to do with the crash, or that this model has a failing somewhere. I've googled and can't see anything relating to either.

Any ideas?

A:Compaq Presario CQ60 - strange noises from inside

Take it back and let them hear it. It's up to them to make good on whatever purchase you've made. They may well have had more than one complaint on these particular laptops and know there's issue with the bunch of them. Don't be concerned about getting what you've paid for. Jazz
No this shouldn't be happening.

Hello,

I own a Compaq Presario CQ60-400SD running Windows Vista SP2 (32 bit), which is the original installed OS in my system (came pre-installed). I bought the laptop in 2009 (October or November, I can't recall exactly when), and about three weeks ago I reinstalled the OS. I also installed a new memory dimm (1GB).

The CPU is an AMD Sempron SI-42 2.10 GHz and the Video Card is Nvidia GeForce 8200M G.

After I reinstalled the OS, about every 4 - 5 days I experience BSODs in different occasions. I mainly use my laptop for work, with software such us AutoCAD, QGIS and HEC-RAS (hydraulics analysis software).

Hello, this is my first post at HP and I will try to explain it the best as I know. All started when I installed Windows 10 Enterprise 64Bits at this notebook, Compaq Presario CQ60-120ES.As default the video driver was with alert but it was not problem at all because the screen was working witha basic Window Driver and after try to find online driver to the video device It was installed a very good driver,but,...But, after a few weeks I understood that, when I closed the screen and open it again, after the hibernation orsuspend, the screen was always color black, the computer awake always but the screen was black, then I pressed the power on ten seconds to completely power off the notebook and then I could turn on as always. A good day I decided to fix the issue with closing/open the screen and black screen as result, then I returned to install Windows 7 Ultimate 32 Bits. I was very happy surprised when the Windows 7 installation finishes, becausethe first that I did it was close and open the screen, and now was working very well. I did not know if the main problem was at the video device driver or in some differences between energy administration of Windows 10 and Windows 7. Then I follow the first thread, the video driver. I downloaded three video drivers to FV598EA#ABE to the intel graphics solution, one to Windows Vista 32 bit and two to Windows 7, one for 32 and other for 64 bit. Finally I returned to install Windows 10, the unique driver that I was enable... Read more

Hi. I have a Compaq Presario CQ60 that is about a year old. These days I have been experiencing problems with my laptop. The problem is that the top hand corner gets hot, and then my laptop automatically shuts down itself. There is plenty of battery on my laptop, and it also happens, while my charger is plugged into it. This mainly happens when I am at school, where  I do not bring my notebook fan cooler. I can basically do nothing, because every 30 minutes it will automatically shut down itself. It even happens when I am in "Battery save" mode. This is starting to irrate me, because I have only had this laptop for about a year, and my warranty just expired so there isn't much I could do. I have read about this being a problem to a lot of people... I am wondering if it has something to do with my battery, because it is really bad. It only lasts for about 30 minutes from 100% to 10%. I do not know what the problem is, because I have no expertise in laptops. I hope  you can help me.

A:Compaq Presario CQ60, overheating and automatically shutting...

You should post your issue on the laptop forum.   If you bought your laptop using a credit card then check with your credit card company about a possible warranty extension.  Some credit card companies do extend the manufacturer's warranty by 1 year on electronics when the device is purchased. It's possible that there is too much dust inside the PC.

Well for some reason, this morning it all started.

Okay, so I load up the screen, and it says

"Windows Error Recovery"
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.

And it has options for...
Launch Startup Repair
Start Windows

I tried the Launch Startup Repair, but it gets stuck at the screen, and nothing pops up. Theres just a mouse.

And if I hit Start Windows, it all goes well, but then after it starts windows, before I get to the login screen, it quickly flashes to a blue screen with text on it for a few milliseconds, and then just goes ALL the way back to the Windows Error Recovery.

Can I get some help here?
Thanks.

I had the same problem as well... I was able to boot up in strictly safemode no networking and back up all my documents and then re-install windows. My restore points were not active so I couldn't go that path of attack to fix the problem. after the re install was finished and 1 round of update were done I continued to do the second round of updates from then it BSODed... luckily system restored worked this time and I am guessing one of the updates are affecting the compaq presario CQ60 models... this is very upsetting. I am also now setting up a Ubuntu partition and thinking I will use that primarily from now on... I hope my story can help you out or give someone an idea to help you out.

Hi.  I'm trying to find out for my brother if his Compaq Presario CQ60-210US laptop, which is running  a  Vista 32-bit OS, can be upgraded to a 64-bit version/editon of Windows like 7, 8/8.1 or 10?   As stated, the laptop's OS is  Vista 32-bit and I think its Vista Home Premium, but I'm not sure.  It has 4GB of RAM which is the max for a 32-bit OS.   I realize that you cannot do an in-place upgrade from a 32-bit OS to a 64-bit OS and that a clean install will be necessary, but does anyone know if this laptop's hardware, BIOS etc. support 64-bit operating systems?  Thanks.

A:Does the Compaq Presario CQ60-210US laptop support Windows 7...

Hi, HP officially supports Windows Vista and Windows 7:      http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/Compaq-Presario-CQ60-Notebook-PC-series/3837670/mode... Therefore very safe to upgrade to Windows 7. It won't support more than 4GB, no point to run 64bit OS      http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/Compaq-Presario-CQ60-Notebook-PC-series/3837670/model/3860048/do... Regards.

I was working on a customer's laptop, a Compaq CQ60, that refused to boot into windows and System Recovery disabled all recovery options except for Command Prompt.

On a hunch, after pressing Escape during BIOS boot, I selected HDD Test. The test ran and failed with "Replace Hard Drive." OK.. the laptop sat there for a few minutes and never did anything else, so I tried to get out of that screen. Nothing responded, so I just held the Power button to turn the computer off.

When I pressed Power again to turn the computer back on, the Power and Wireless LEDs comes on, the CD drive is accessed and then the HDD LED lights up for a second and goes out. The screen never comes up nor do the backlights.

I have tried hooking up an external monitor, but that never shows anything either.

I have tried taking the memory out, cleaning the contacts, putting them back in, swapping the modules around, booting with one or the other.... No effect.

I pulled the battery and the CMOS battery, unplugged AC and let it sit for a good half hour. I held the Power button for thirty seconds. Plugged the CMOS battery back in then the AC. Turned it on and still no go.

I cannot figure out WHAT could have happened!? Any other ideas? Thanks...

I recently received a Dell Latitude E5570 with Windows 10 for work and the keyboard/trackpad does not work. The wireless keyboard and mouse I use when docked work fine but the keyboard and trackpad built into the laptop do not work. The touchscreen keyboard also works just fine. Is my kayboard/touchpad broken or is there  a lock on Windows 10 and/or on the Latitude E5570 that I have enabled?

Hello,

Our Compaq Presario v4000US is a decent computer we have had for a while. But all of a sudden the Keyboard stopped working. We don't know why or how. No water or liquid has come in contact with it. We replaced the Keyboard and still nothing working. If you press as many keys as you can occasionally it would type 'H', a comma, or g. Maybe even just typing the same of those three repeatedly. What would cause this to happen? We have reinstalled windows and tried it in safe mode but no dice. the caps lock light and num lock light dont come on. We have plugged in a usb keyboard and that worked for a while. with the Caps and NUM lights working on the laptop itself if pressed from the USB keyboard. But, now the USB keyboard acts funny. When pressing L or M it closes windows or opens my computer. anyone have any ideas?

Has the keyboard even been plugged in or unplugged while the machine was running?

Can you disable the PS/2 keyboard (right-click it in Device Manager and disable) and/or unplug it and try just the USB keyboard?

Can you enter BIOS setup to see if "leagacy" USB is enabled (or it might actually say "USB keyboard") and check that the date/time is correct?

good day all,

for christmas yesterday i recieved a replacement laptop as a gift it is a compaq presario cq56 and it works great my only problem is that my media player key on my left side of my keyboard runs cyberdvd player, i removed this and installed vlc as i prefer that for my media viewing and now i am unable to run my media player through the keyboard shortcuts.

i have set file associations inside vlc
i have tried to set vlc as my default program using the default programs and features menu but couldnt find vlc player only options were current, windows media centre and windows media player, selecting either of the windows options and clicking on ok resulted in the option being reset to my current one
i cant seem to find a program installed on the machine that allows me to customize my keyboard shortcuts but the laptop was preowned but reconditioned, i have searched for a program but i can not find one for my opearating system (windows 7 home preimum)
there isnt a option to configure the shortcuts in the keyboard section of control panel
and as a last resort i tried to change the fill association that is in the registry location relating to the appkey (the value is 16 and the default file association was .CDA i changed this to .mp3 hoping that that would allow me to load vlc player as default but it didnt work)
i attempted to set the vlc media player shortcut on the desktop to the media key but it wouldnt allow it, windows refused to change the box from non... Read more

Hi,

During the last few months, my laptop has been used a considerable amount. Unfortunately, my sister borrowed it while I was away at my orientation for college. She broke parts of the keyboard (the parts holding the key into place, and some other things), and I am currently using it mostly taped together. Lucky for me, the tape is holding and still working...

However, my dad who has been a computer guy for many years, wants to replace the keyboard unit, so that way when I get to college it won't be as bad.

The laptop itself is a couple years old, and I don't want to get a new one.

So I was wondering if there are any step by step tutorials for a Compaq Presario 2500. Any help would be much appreciated.

A little history of the laptop: I bought the laptop used from a friends and All the keys work except "O", "L" and the period. I bought a brand new replacement keyboard and those buttons worked fine, for awhile. I finally bought a new Wwindows Vista cd and installed it on the laptop, since it was supposed to have Vista and it had XP for whatever reason. Still nothing, when I unplug the keyboard ribbon and plug it back in, the keys work for a while and then stop. Any answers are greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Recently my Presario 2100 keyboard gives me a problem: the G key won't work anymore, but pressing H or ' or the up arrow will also trigger the G key, it can only be stopped by pressing another key:

hgggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggw
'ggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggf

I did take out the keyboard and spray it with compressed air (in a bike workshop), and it is still the same.

It there any way to solve this problem, without having to pay for a new one?

Thanks for any advice.

I was doing my usual work when my Bluetooth mouse scroll wheel suddenly went from scrolling the page to zooming the page for no reason.

This was quickly followed by my laptop keyboard suddenly refusing to work except for a few keys. It was quickly obvious that key function had been remapped (i.e. the M key did what the Enter key was meant to do, etc.).

I tried an USB wired external keyboard and the problem still persisted.

So, I thought it had to be an OS issue. After checking a few things, I decided to reinstall Win7 (Home Edition 64-bit) as I hadn't done that for several months. I hoped it would fix the problem. I checked the BIOS and then wiped the HDD and did a reinstall after backing up my files.

It solved the problem for about 30 minutes, then the problem with the mouse and keyboard returned.

I've checked the Device Manager and there's nothing showing up there. I ran the troubleshooter tool a few times. Most of the keyboard's function has returned to normal, though I have no idea why. I haven't tried the Bluetooth mouse, I'm using the laptop's trackpad instead. But I've noticed the copy and paste keyboard shortcuts aren't working (even though I can still right-click and do it that way, it's annoying as hell).

Any ideas about the source of the issue? Or even how I can get the copy/paste working again?

I have a computer from 1998; I think it's a Pentium 3 (maybe 2; I don't remember). About a year ago, it started connecting to the monitor very sporadically. Eventually, it outright died. At the time, it seemed very likely that it had picked up a virus. We bought a new computer, but would like to drag some of the old stuff off of the Compaq, if I could get it up and working.

It beeps and clicks and whirls away happily...but the screen remains absolutely blank. It used to work if I switched monitors, but only temporarily. The keyboard does not seem to be receiving power, either. Hard to say with the mouse, since I'm getting nothing.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Check to see if the old computer's hard drive is compatible with a hard drive connection on your new machine. There are two issues, the type of connector and the speed settings.

Your old computer's hard drive is undoubtedly designed to mate with an IDE connector. Most computer mother boards with IDE connectors have at least two IDE connectors. If your new computers has IDE connectors, you may need to free up one by disconnecting a CD or zip drive. Configure your old computer's hard drive as a "slave," connect the power cable, and then connect the IDE ribbon cable. When you turn on your machine, if the drive is operational and compatible, you should be able to read the contents of the files. I am not an expert, but I believe the older slower ATA/100 hard drives will work with mother boards designed for faster ATA/133 hard drives, but of course the read / write speeds will be at the slower rate.

After finding that you can examine the file directory of the old computer's hard drive, but before opening any of the files, it is a good idea to have a virus search program, such as Norton or MacAfree, check the files for computer viruses. Once you are certain that the files you want are virus free, copy them across.

If your new computer does not have an IDE connector on its motherboard, perhaps because it uses one of the newer harddrives with a serial connector, search for someone that does have a comput... Read more

Hi,

I turned on my laptop this morning to find that the touch pad doesn't work. This wasn't really a problem as I generally use a plug-in mouse, however, upon restarting my computer again, my keyboard also doesn't work.

I'm running Vista 32 bit and I have no idea what to do.

Does this sound like a software problem or a hardware problem? Is it possible that I have a virus that is causing this?

Would my best solution be to re-install Vista?

I have everything backed up so I don't mind doing that, however, I don't know how. When I bought my laptop Vista was pre-installed so I don't have the CD.

I'd be very appreciative to any help you guys could offer!

Hi,

My significant other has been using a Presario CQ60 for a while now.  It was used frequently by her teenage boys and thus had a LOT of crap installed on it.  I have done what I could to clean up the number of applications and programs installed, but it seems to have been hopelessly infected with something.  Here is a list of the symptoms:

Long black screen during start-up
LONG start up time
heats up very quickly (even after I have removed all the dust from the fan and vents)
repeated desktop icon flashing while initializing.
LONG initializing time.
Seemingly excessive number of background processes running (from 75 -112 depending, most of them I do not recognize as system processes)
CPU usage spikes to 100% and stays at 100% while the fan is running at top speed when the only thing open is one browser streaming a netflix movie. (with 3 gigs of ram this should not peg the resources, but it does)
Streaming movies have long lag periods, and audio is commonly out of sync with video.
Wi-Fi traffic for any other device is slowed significantly when this laptop is running.

Currently using Avast anti-virus, and have done malware bytes scans.  Each has found a few minor things, but the problem seems to have gotten even worse after scanning and quarantining the infected files.

Where do I start, and what do i do.
All we really want this thing to do is check emails and play movies without sounding like it is going to explode.

Personally, I would try a factory reset. This would take it back to the point of purchase. Any important files would have to backed up as these would be wiped in the reset. Any programs installed since purchase would have to be reinstalled. Was the OS updated from purchase? The original OS would be restored.

Tapping F11 at boot will take the computer to the factory restore wizard or you can do it inside of Windows if it is still there. This assumes the recovery partition is still available on the computer. Double clicking computer should show another driver called Recovery.

Even after doing the factory reset you may still have issues due to hardware problems. It seems like the computer is overheating and the only sure way to clear out the dust or find another cause is to disassemble the computer.

I have CQ60 notebook. I can turn it on but the screen remains blank. The lights come on so power is going into the machine. After approx. 15 mins it turns itself off. I have tried the suggestions, taking battery out, holding power button down etc. but none of this seems to work. Please can someone help, the HP site is useless and doesn't give much advice at all. Unfortunately we do not have the recovery disks.
