Preferred Solution: Friends comp... u know, the ol' popup not online... close IE/ freeze comp... HIJACK

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Download WinPFind
Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"
Extract it somewhere you will remember like the Desktop
Dont do anything with it yet!

Reboot into Safe Mode
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Doubleclick WinPFind.exe
Click " Configure Scan Options"
Select " Run Add ONs" and then select ALL the options in the box below it, Press Apply
Now Click "Start Scan"
It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!
Once the Scan is Complete
Reboot back to Normal Mode!
Go to the WinPFind folder
Locate WinPFind.txt
Place those results in the next post!. It will be too big to post so you will need to attach it to your reply

I'm sure her computer is touched somehow. I've improved its response time, boot up, shutdown; etc by leaps and bounds,( used to take 20 minutes just to restart) but it still strikes me as a tad slow. (she's let others download plenty on it)

It's a Sony VAIO Pentium 4 2.80ghz XP OS with 512mb of RAM--and my P3 450mhz Win98 with 192mb RAM is faster than hers for many simple operations. I know XP is a RAM whore, but it lags a lot.

Well at least the big issue I have here is that my friend bought a new comp for $200. Really friggin ticked off because it came with liquid cooling. but besides I also wonder what was the speed of athlon xp's when they first hit the scene the lowest I remember is 1.4 Ghz, but my friend says is 1.8Ghz. But clocks out at 1.18ghz. Checked his board for possibility of underclockage still some odd reason that doesn't seem to be the case.

his board is a KT4AV from MSI

http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=456

he wants me to buy a cheap sempron for it but still I really don't think its a good idea to to put one in their especially when I'm not sure about the processor that s already in there.

Hi just trying to clean up a friends computer.

Have fixed her major issue that she was noticing already.

I'm currently running a few online scans. Just thought I'd post this to get alittle help as to what is on the computer.

Only things I know how to deal with in hijack this are things I've dealt with previously or have some info on. Not sure exactly what issues this system might have.

Seems like a long log file to me so I think that I still have more to do. Any assistance anyone here could offer would be appreciated.

ok, my friend's computer suddenly stopped working. he told me that he smelled something burning, i told him it might be his power supply. turns out i was right [i put it in my computer and it didnt work]. so i got a new one for him, we put it in and nothing happens, except this green led on his mainboard lights up while the power's connected. what else could possibly be not working? is it the mainboard cuz when i was trying to remove the main power connector from the mainboard, it wouldn't come out and seemed to be stuck. eventually i got it, but it required pulling really hard, making the board bend a little.

would it just be better to replace the mainboard? it's slot1..i dont think they even make those anymore.

Hello again my wonderful problem solvers!!!
Working on friends computer, fixed all 15 viruses and other weird sorts I found, now when I boot her up I get a black screen saying/asking:
Please select and Operating System to start:
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition or
Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
and then I get 30 sec. to choose.

I have noticed she has a C: drive and a D: drive, specs as follows::
HP_Pavilion (C:drive) Partition Basic NTFS 31.70 GB 72%Free
HP_Pavilion (D:drive) Partition Basic FAT32 5.55 GB 17%Free
Both Healthy and Clean--FINALLY!!
It was really messed up when I got it, but did my best.

Any suggestions on the boot up problem???

Find the boot.ini (I think it's hidden and a system file), open it up, and paste the contents into this thread. Someone will be able to tell you what to delete.

I'm working on a co-workers computer. When she gave it to me it wouldn't do anything but show a black screen. I was able to get it on and run her virus scan. Since then Spyware Guard 2008 pops up even after being deleted. I have researched the program and have followed instructions on how to remove it only to have it fail. I can't seem to get the websites that I need to open. It's like it has completely blocked me from accessing what I need.
I was reading this thread and it's a lot like what my co-worker has going on. http://www.techsupportforum.com/security-center/hijackthis-log-help/321768-mystery-spyware-guard-2008-program-installation-malware-virus-infection-pop-ups.html

So how can we get this fixed if none of the pages will open?

Thanks in advance!!!

Hey all, this is my first time here. I'm a lil bit of a noobie when it comes to the whole software end of things. Okay, here's my problem, my comp used to work absoletly beautifully but then it took a mind of it's own. I did a complete restore then a fresh OS on a new HDD. For some reason when i start to play a gome, the game will just close out and no error message is displayed. These are games that i've played for a while. Also, the time in which they close varies. Could be 30 mins or 30 seconds. I have updated drivers, tried new video cards, new memory, and ,as stated above, new OS on a new HDD.
I'm running:
XP pro
ASUS MoBo
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ at 2.64 GHz
2 GB of Kingston RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 6600 VE
Cantenna for those hard to reach WiFi signals

Take a look at your Norton Internet Security's firewall program and make sure it's not set to be too restrictive that it's blocking you access to the internet.

Hi and welcome

Those files sound suspicious. You may be infected with something.

Click here to download HJTsetup.exe: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTSetup.exe
Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.

Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

My friends computer is freezing without producing any errors in Event Viewer or creating a mini-dump file (since it doesn't crash). I have the events from event viewer that happened right before the freeze as well as problems that occurred at startup. Could any of the events be the culprit? Do I need to do anything regarding the startup list? I ran sfc and am waiting to see if the freezes keep occurring, but I have a feeling they will as I've tried it before (this computer has been quite problematic). If the event viewer is fine, what else can I do without doing a fresh install?

Hi

My computer has wireless internet connection and although it says it is online with signal strength good-excelent and the other computors in my house have no problem I cannot access the internet. When I try internet explorer it asks me if I want to work offline or to try again. When I try Firefox it says that my homepage cannot be found.

I have checked all my internet connection settings and they seem to be correct. I think I am infected with several different trojan horse viruses but cannot yet get rid of them.

Can you please help me as i desperately need to be able to access the internet from my computor and want to clear my computor of viruses.

Thanks,
Ellen

DEP can cause crashes. It normally should be on for max protections, but some apps may need exceptions. if you look in event viewr (type eventvwr in search) a DEP crash will say event ID 1000 source 100 and give the app data.

Take a look let us know what you see and tell us what hardware you have

Hey guys. Nice site you have here.

I am running Windows Vista on my Gateway laptop and recently have been having problems. My computer freezes within 10 - 30 minutes or so (time varies) after I log on. Ctrl+Alt+Delete doesn't work... it just freezes. It doesn't matter if I log in and don't even touch the keyboard/mouse, or if I am browsing something via Firefox... it just freezes. Today, it even froze at the log in screen. I turned the comp on after it froze... left for 5-10 minutes... came back to the log in screen and the computer was frozen

I tried a whole bunch of stuff. My virus protector Avast found some trojans but that didnt help.. I used another virus finder and it found something but i'm pretty sure it got rid of it (?) and I've used CWShredder and the Hijackthis file gave me this output:

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

All your minidumps are corrupt and unreadable. This is a sign of faulty ram/psu.

Go HERE and follow the instructions.

Also, check that your psu is putting out enough power for your system.
