DVD tray opening on its own. Settings changed before my eyes

Q: DVD tray opening on its own. Settings changed before my eyes

I will be on my laptop when all of a sudden the DVD tray opens. Another time the device manager opened and uninstalled something in front of me and I had to reinstall my whole computer.  Yesterday morning I turned on the computer and was presented with a black screen 2 minutes later the login screen appeared. After login it had asked me if I want to restore my last browsing history. I never turn off my computer improperly. I can be in the browser when the size of the font changes from 100% to 75%. I will take care of any errors in event viewer only to have loads more the next morning. It's as if someone else is using my computer but I keep it in my room and have a password so I think I've been hacked.  I'm getting constant DistributedCom errors as well. thank you

Preferred Solution: DVD tray opening on its own. Settings changed before my eyes

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Greetings hopeymope and to BleepingComputer's Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal forum. My name is Oh My! and I am here to help you! Now that we are "friends" please call me Gary.If you would allow me to call you by your first name I would prefer to do that.===================================================Ground Rules:First, I would like to inform you that most of us here at Bleeping Computer offer our expert assistance out of the goodness of our hearts. Please try to match our commitment to you with your patience toward us. If this was easy we would never have met. Please do not run any tools or take any steps other than those I will provide for you while we work on your computer together. I need to be certain about the state of your computer in order to provide appropriate and effective steps for you to take. Most often "well intentioned" (and usually panic driven!) independent efforts can make things much worse for both of us. If at any point you would prefer to take your own steps please let me know, I will not be offended. I would be happy to focus on the many others who are waiting in line for assistance. Please perform all steps in the order they are listed in each set of instructions. Some steps may be a bit complicated. If things are not clear, be sure to stop and let me know. We need to work on this together with confidence. Please copy and paste all logs into your post unless directed otherwise. Please do not re-run any programs I suggest. If you encounter problems simply stop and tell me.When you post your reply, use the button instead. In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see the button. Click on this then choose Immediate E-Mail notification and then Proceed and you will be sent an email once I have posted a response. If you do not reply to your topic after 5 days we assume it has been abandoned and I will close it.When your computer is clean I will alert you of such. I will also provide for you detailed information about how you can combat future infections.I would like to remind you to make no further changes to your computer unless I direct you to do so.===================================================Now that I am assisting you, you can expect that I will be very responsive to your situation. If you are able, I would request you check this thread at least once per day so that we can try to resolve your issues effectively and efficiently. If you are going to be delayed please be considerate and post that information so that I know you are still with me. Unfortunately, there are many people waiting to be assisted and not enough of us at BleepingComputer to go around. I appreciate your understanding and diligence.Thank you for your patience thus far. Is there an Addition.txt document on your Desktop? If so please copy and paste the information in your reply. If not, run a FRST scan again making sure to check Addition.txt and post both reports.

Hi

Erm , I don't really know how it started , but i think it had gone worse these days so im getting worried .

Problems i'm facing
1- "[title] Personalized settings
Setting up personalized settings for:
C:\Recycler\S-1-5-21-1482476501-1644494937-68"

this appears each time i start up ,

2- my computer lags easily , but not always . sometimes when i afk for sometime and when i come back and i click something it lags and soon theres nothing i can do except pressing the restart button . (i can 'press' the task manager button , but after that it doesn't appear and it gets worse , sometimes it writes that explorar.exe is using very high % of my cpu . )

3- Certain settings Did change like the 'no active audio mixers available' problem , i searched the Internet for this problem and i found the solution using services.msg , i turned it to automatic but after i restart it turns back to the way it is . (Note : the no audio mixers problem seems to appear only after i use the computer for some time , everytime i trstart it turns back normal)
- last time when i press ctrl+alt+del the task manager appears immediately , now , the windows security appears first .

4- Sometimes when i insert my pendrive and after i finish i want to remove it safely , but it says its currently in use or something , i'm pretty sure im not though

5- Everytime i click on my hard disk , it opens in another window . I searched for it and i deleted the mousepointer2 or something registry an... Read more

somebody mind helping?D:~i think i did the right thing this time already><Hello siqilee,We ask that once you have posted your log and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump" your thread or make further replies until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. The reason we ask this or do not respond to your requests is because that would remove you from the active queue that Techs and Staff have access to. The malware staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response, there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond. That is why I have made an edit to your last post, instead of a reply. Please do not multiple post here, as that only pushes you further down the queue and causes confusion to the staff. Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response but your log will be reviewed and answered as soon as possible.Thank you for understanding.Regards,The weatherman (Moderator)

I'm currently personalizing the themes. Then I saw this happen.

Anyone know how to change it to default?

A:My system tray and taskbar icons changed itself!

Quickest way would probably be to just use system restore.
If you can't access the start menu, you can ctl alt del and use the run feature in the task manager. (file -> run)
Start System Restore from a command prompt

I just returned from vacation and did not use my computer for 10 days. When I returned and logged on my CD tray opens and closes. Sometimes not all the way and at times it is OK. What could be causing this and how can I correct it. Thank you

A:Cd Tray Keeps Opening

Clearly all signs show that your CD-ROM is possessed!

You can check if there's something preventing it from closing all the way. You may also want to scan for viruses/trojans. Do you have another CD-ROM you can test?

auto execute does not work when I put a disk in.

I have run Norton 360, it shows no vurus or spyware.

Does this only happen when this disk is in the drive?
Does it also happen when the drive is empty?
Does this happen with any other disks?

Hello,
Sometimes when I come out of standby, my Pioneer 109 will keep opening and closing on its own, the only solution I found was to shut down the computer, wait 10 seconds, and then restart it, if I don't wait 10 seconds, the problem stays. When I put a DVD in the drive, while it's open, it will close and then start spinning but it is not actually reading it, and if I go to My Computer it doesn't see the DVD in the DVD drive. I ran a full virus scan and I did not find anything. I know that my DVD drive is an old one, it has like 5 years, and is IDE. I just hope that it is not my motherboard!

Try updating your drive firmware. See if this page helps. Its old, though.

Hi, I was walking by my computer, and I heared the try open, then I go in, and shut it, and it keeps opening and closing on it's own, randomly. Now, I play games on pogo, and everytime I sign into my name, it does a search for autoplay, and autoplay is for pogo. I'm not sure why. I run XP, and I already tried to restore my computer to last night, and it still keeps doing it. Any help?

A:Disc Tray Keeps opening...?

This could either be some spyware/malware or perhaps just a defective drive. If you restored to a factory configuration and it keeps doing the dance, I'd suspect the drive.

Seriously, some of those programs you'll want to run, some, you can disable so they don't run at startup, and there may be some that you don't need to run at all.Did you compare them against the "Startup List" tab at the top of BleepingComputers Forum pages?

I just purchased an AOpen DVD burner and am having some issues. I've installed it multiple ways with the jumpers (tried it as Primary, Secondary, etc) so I don't think that is the problem. Also, when I go to "My Computer" I can see it's reading the drive as the "F:" drive. Also, I tried installing drivers from the Nero program that came with it. I updated the Firewire drivers from the AOpen website.

The problem with the drive is that it keeps opening after a few seconds. Its a brand new drive so I'm thinking that maybe its faulty. Anyone ever have this problem or know anything about it? Suggestions?

I'm on Windows 8.1 and I can't find this for the life of me (metro/modern UI settings).
Had made all of it pink at some point in the past, and don't use it much. Now I want to change it to a different colour because I plan to use it.

I open "Computer Settings" from the "charm bar", and for people making videos about it on Youtube, they have "Personalize" as the first option you see.

I can't find it. Clicking on Personalization inside the Modern UI opens up the regular Control Panel which doesn't have the modern bits in it.

When I do manage to open Personalization, it has only avatar, desktop and lock screen.

Just to clarify what I mean, I want to change the colour that's cerise/pink in the picture below.
Any tips appreciated!

A:Opening the settings for metro/modern UI settings

Hello Martienne,

Be sure that you are on your Start screen when you open the Settings charm to see Personalize.

The pinkish color on the left side of your screenshot would be the accent color you select.

If you like, Option One in the tutorial below will give more details to help.

Hope this helps,

Right click on computer from the start menu and left click properties   on the left hand side click on device manager.. In the device manager under CD/.DVD Drives  click on the plus sign and right click on the name of the device that drops down and left click uninstall. reboot the computer and see if it fixes that..   If that does not work... reboot computer to the BIOS screen (might have to press the "DEL" Key to launch ) see if the drive is detected there if not its a drive issue

Malware?  I haven't scanned anything yet.  I've read across the internet about loose connections and updating the driver.  But what are the odds this would start on 2 computers on the same day?

A:DVD tray opening randomly. 2 computers at work

I.T. guy playing tricks, possible infection, maybe a windows update caused the issue. Seems this could be anything. You could push the eject button a few times to fix a possible stuck button...

I would run some virus scans to be safe.

Question: does any 1 person have access to both computers? If so maybe someone setup a scheduled task for a joke that ejects the cd/dvd drive every so often. I would check the scheduled tasks for any strange cd/dvd drive eject command.

I have a lot of stuff going on in my system tray and I need to have certain icons displaying all the time and others hidden all the time, etc. So I change the settings, but they don't seem to stay that way no matter what I've done so far. Is there some way I can make this work better or is this an inherent bugginess?

Thanks,
Ellen

Hello All,

When I open Windows Live Mail I get the usual messages in the system tray area such as Connecting, Authorizing, updating calendar, and then It finishes up with an Error Icon in the system tray. (Yellow triangle w/ exclamation point.)

Then mail which has already been received opens in my inbox but the client doesn't seem to check the server for new e-mails at the time I open it. It takes ten minutes for the new mails to come into my inbox.

Under "Tools" > "Options" > "General Tab" I have selected "Send and Receive messages at startup" and "Check for new messages every ten minutes"

Can anyone tell me why this is happening? If you need any more info on this ask and I'll respond.

Thank you very much,
ranger72

Sounds like it is a corrupt install. Uninstall Control panel...programs and features....windows essentials. The use Ccleaner. Then reinstall.

Make sure that you back up everything, before you start.

Hi there. I'm having some issues with my computer at the moment. It seems whenever I load an application from a CD/DVD, be it a game, installing or playing, or anything else, upon attempting to eject it after I'm finished, I get either:
A) the inability to open the disc tray again,
B) my computer restarts itself
or C) the computer shuts off, and i receive a BSOD stop error : 0x0000007E.
I report to microsoft every time, but so far to no avail. My graphics card burned out recently, and ever since, be it with my integrated adapter, or new graphics card, i have the formerly mentioned issues. I have reset the drivers, reinstalled them several times, checked the firmware of my optical drive, and checked my hdd for viruses, aswell as cleaning up my registry, but still i havent been able to solve the problem. Any help would be marvellous. Thank you for your time.

My Google search screen no longer has a search button. Just says click enter.
My Yahoo mail is all spread out and pale
My EBAY has small printing and formatting is different

UGH

Do you know what the default font name and size would have been? Maybe if I put it back.

Do you mean what is in START-UP??
You can turn off programs from starting up which will take them out of the tray.
Start....Run. Type in "msconfig" without quotes. Click on startup.
Be VERY careful what you stop starting up.

Hi everyone,

I've had this problem a few times in the past but lately it's been happening so often that I decided to give it some time to try and solve it.

The problem is that after restarting my computer (running Win XP SP3), all icons in the system tray (next to the clock) lose all settings that I've made regarding their visibility - while I had left some of them to be "Always show", most were on "Always hide", such that there weren't too many icons taking up taskbar space.

I noticed this problem happens right after restarting the computer - not after *every* restart though, I have a suspicion that it might only happen after restarts prompted by Windows Updates.

I did some searching but could not find anyone who had a similar problem (and solved it!). Can anyone help? Many thanks in advance!

PS: apologies for also cross-posting this on ComputerForum and HardwareForums

Hi, all! I've had a strange, recurring issue for the past few months. It only has happened three times, and I can't reproduce it. Nothing appears in the event log after this occurs, other than the usual kernel power error from the computer turning off.

This doesn't happen during intensive activities, just regular browsing. What happens is I lose display, and the (empty) disc tray begins to open and close while the computer attempts to reboot repeatedly. I then turn off the power supply, and my motherboard produces code 55-- memory not installed. I bring the computer into the kitchen to work on it, and the moment I plug it in and try turning it on in there, it's fine. I bring it back into my room and use it as normal, until this happens again like a month later.

I've run an overnight memtest and it comes up clean. Same for chkdsk. I'm not getting any regular bluescreens-- while I know that they've occurred in my 3-year-old machine's lifespan, they were unreemarkable one-offs. Things (connectors, mem sticks, graphics card) are re-seated occasionally while dusting, but nothing seems to be connected improperly, especially since the computer functions as intended 99% of the time.

I really have no idea what is happening. I don't have any spare equipment available to swap in and out. Is there any way I can figure out what's going on here?

Hey, this is my first post here, so we'll see if I go about doing this correctly. Basically my computer went belly up on me. The system tray (or whatever the thing at the bottom right is called beside the clock) is now just a thick black line. I cannot do anything there as when I right click anywhere on it I just get the normal right clicking thing you get clicking anywhere along that bottom bar thing.
Anyone know how to fix this? If more info is required please ask and tell me how to obtain the information.

thx

is your "system tray" unlock?
put ur mouse cursor over the thick line. and if it shows a double arrow. click on it and draw it up.

My PC is hard-wired to the router, and the router DNS settings are for OpenDNS (208.67.222.222). Two days ago, everything was fine, then yesterday when I switched on my PC, it wouldn't connect to the internet. The router was working OK.

With the help of my ISP, I found that the DNS setting in the computer was for a specific address, not "automatic". Having reset that to automatic, it's fine again, but my question is - how could the DNS setting in the PC have changed, apparently by itself?

I can't tell you the specific address which was in there, because I didn't think to write it down, and now the field is blank, but I think it may have started 177....

Hi all
Can anyone help i switched my P.C off for the first time in weeks, and on starting it up i had a warning saying CPU settings may have been changed reset the CPU setting in the comos and save. can anyone tell me what this is. i then booted up in the last knowing safe restore point and it seems to be ok but have not switched it off since.

A:cpu settings changed

The CPU has changed messages usually pops up on ASUS motherboards and in many cases for no reason; its a glitch that ASUS is aware of. It can also happen if the power is lost or if the system is turned off while in the early stages of bootup. Go into the BIOS setup, usually DEL or F1 and then Save and Exit to clear the message. Generally there's no need to change anything. This is not linked to Windows in any way.

I had to do an XP repair install. After doing it, all my desktop settings had changed and most of my programs were gone...or so I thought.

What has happened is that in "Documents and Settings" , a new user folder has been created "bullseye.NET1". The original folder "bullseye" is still there, along with all my programs that I thought were gone, and all of my setting, etc.

So when I boot the system, I am "Bullseye", but XP is loading to the new "bullseye.NET1" folder and settings instead of the "bullseye" folder and settings that it used to load before I did the repair install.....

Any ideas how to get XP to go back to the original folder?

Thanks in advance.

Trojan horse Downloader Zlob.ACZS

I have a Dell 1300 laptop running Xp with S.P. 2

I ran AVG Free ( it’s the only AV programme I have ) and found” Trojan horse Downloader Zlob.ACZS” which it put into the virus vault and I later deleted it when I found the machine ran just fine without it.
Before this post I have tried using Ad-Adware 2008,Spybot search and destroy, Housecall followed by McAfee Stinger nothing critical was found by those programs just Sptbot who found tracking cookies and a change to I.E’s security settings !!!…all put right or removed. I don't know what IE settings were changed I allowed Spybot to correct the prob

I have installed “Zone Alarms Firewall” before this I just relied on the Windows XP one.

The machine seems to be running ok but am I clean? Repeated AVG full computer scans show no threats, is there a Trojan Horse or something these programs can’t see ?

I enclose my HJT log and just hope someone can to help me.

As you may guess I am a beginner

Hey everyone. First, thanks in advance for any possible help that you can offer. This problem started just last night. I was browsing a few tabbed websites last night while watching TV, and I turned away from my laptop. I turned back when I noticed that IE pop-ups started firing off pretty rapidly, maybe two or three a minute. I closed out Firefox and when I started it again, an AVG search bar (wasn't there before) was on my browser. That's the only change that I noticed with Firefox. IE pop-ups were still firing pretty frequently. I've restarted my laptop as well, and now AVG is eating up my CPU to 100% almost the entire time. The IE pop-ups are not appearing anymore, but it's only been maybe a half hour since the restart, so I won't neglect to mention it. I've since used HijackThis and removed one or two things that a friend of mine recommended, but I got nervous and decided to go to a forum instead for help.

EDIT: Oops, forgot to mention the AVG settings part. Now when I open AVG from my toolbar, there's no anti-spyware, no services at all showing. I try to start a scan, but the button does nothing to initialize a scan.

Hello,
I'm running Windows 7 Professional 32 bit, with all Windows updates and Kaspersky Internet Security installed and updated. We suddenly started getting a phishing warning message every time my husband tried to log on to his Outlook Web Application from home.
I use Outlook that's part of Office 2010. I checked the status of SSL/TLS settings of the Internet Explorer browser, and discovered that only TLS 1.0 was checked.
I read on blogs.msdn.com (published 11/13) that TLS 1.0, 1.1, and 1.2 are enabled by default on Internet Explorer 11. I haven't been tinkering with these settings. BTW, TLS 1.0, 1.1, and 1.2 are all checked/enabled in my husband's user account settings,
and in those of the Administrator account. It's only mine that are different, and I am the main user of this computer. What could possibly have changed these settings? I don't run anything in Compatibility Mode.
I have run a full scan in Kaspersky Internet Security, the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool, and the Microsoft Safety Scanner, AKA the Microsoft Emergency Response Tool. Nothing shows anything amiss. nstat -ano shows no rogue connections on
the network.
Is the change in these settings something to be concerned about? Should we have TLS 1.0 disabled due to BEAST? I appreciate your help and advice.

Several of the machines in our office have recently had the IP settings changed on local Area Connection options. We are running Windows XP.
This morning two of our machines could not connect to the internet or get email. So I checked the local area connection in "Network Connections" . I then went into "Local area connection properties" and highlighted Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and clicked on "properties".
There are 2 radio boxes at the bottom of the dialog box. One says, "Obtain DNS server address automatically" and one says, "Use the following DNS server addresses".

Somehow this option was changed from, "Obtain DNS server address automatically" to "Use the following DNS server addresses".

Nobody in our office would know how to do this. How does this option get changed without someone manually clicking on it?
This happended a couple of weeks ago to another machine. Is this just some weird glitch that happens or could this be sabotage?
Thanks

The problem started with a P2P virus on OS1. I cleared up the bug with Norton AV. OS1 can no longer access the internet via browser. Firefox and explorer both show "No Internet Connection" standard splash screens. OS1 is able to connect to P2P internet via Azureus. OS2, a clean install, connects to the internet via browser and P2P just fine. So, what gives? Which setting got changed to allow P2P and not HTTP on OS1?

Thanks in advance!
