I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Have you tried just canceling out of the screen and see if it will allow you into Windows without a user name and password?

For security reasons, Microsoft does not allow parents (computer administrators) to check on, maintain, adjust or otherwise enter their kids' (limited users) XP profiles without either resetting their passwords or waiting for them to come home and being confrontational about it.

Ideally I would like to be able to log on to a limited user account from my administrator account without tampering with anyone's passwords-resetting them or otherwise. Actually, I have little interest in the (step) kids' personal life and stuff. Alternately, perhaps you may help me with my ultimate goal: limiting screensaver activity:

My arrogant and belligerant teenage stepson likes to customize the family room to his tastes rather that leave it to the generic unbiased interest of the family in general. Latest, he has designed his "my pictures" screensaver somehow to override cmos settings to illustrate various pictures of himself for unlimited time rather than allow cmos or windows to shut off the monitor after periods of inactivity. Typically he would prefer to be confrontational about it, fight and argue over the issue stressing out his depressed mom in the process; I do not want to fight-I just want my monitor to go off after a while of non-use and not be kept on by XP. Sorry about all the disfunctional family issues I had to mention for background. It is hard dealing with an aggressive controlling kid. Obviously most of the time the computer is left on his profile but... Read more

Good afternoon,

I am trying to network a notebook with Windows 7 Home Premium and a notebook with Windows XP Home Edition operating systems. The settings in Windows 7 were done under Work network rather than Home network. The Windows 7 computer is able to see all the files that have been shared on Windows XP machine.

In My Network Places / View Workgroup Computers on the Windows XP machine the Windows 7 machine is visible. When right click to Open a dialogue box appears asking for a User name and Password. Please will someone tell me where I can find this information on the Windows 7 machine. I have tried my admin password.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Usually if I need to use the User/Pass to access a machine remotely, I use my admin name and password...sometimes this doesn't work, in which case I just create another account on that remote machine (when I can get to it) and give myself admin access. That always has worked for me.

Hello, thank you in advance for your help.

My roommate recently left this place, and as a prank, hid a few important files on another account on my computer

He accessed my account, copied them to a USB, deleted them off my account, created a new account, and put them there. He is pretty good with encrypting files, so im afraid that they are "EFS-encrypted", so i no longer can change the password via control panel

Does anyone have any idea how i can find out the password, without changing it?

I have tried only "net user *account name*" in CMD, but it didn't show the password, only when it was last set, i don't know any other way to solve this.

Again, thank you in advance! .

I just purchased a Windows 7 PC from Dell and I cannot remember the password on my old "workgroup" Network. (I don't even remember setting one up 3 yrs ago.) Thanks and Happy New Year to you all!

A:Network Password lost - Need to find it.

We can offer very limited support for lost passwords. If your account is an administrator account, after you logon to the original computer go to Start > Control Panel > User Accounts. Then make choices depending on whether you want to create a password, change your password, or manage another account.

I have two computers & so I don't frequently use the one I am having the problem with. It is a Dell Inspiron 1000 Laptop Running Windows XP Home/newbie so pls be patient..
Anyway, the Dell got infected with the NSIS Media Trojan & I tried everything to remove it including but not limited to Webroot spy sweeper. It would quarantine it but apparently this thing regenerates in the registry. Therefore, I decided I needed to really secure my system & so since I am the only user, I deleted the non-admin logon account & set up the admin account with a password. I wrote it down but have lost the paper which I had written the password on. The hint is not helping me remember it exactly so I'm locked out. I bought drive scrubber because I figured since I'm locked out and can't use the computer than I might take it to a repair shop or sell it but didn't want others to be able to pull up any personal information.
So I have two questions: Is there anyway for me to legally get back into my computer? I have my serial key which came attached to the bottom of the laptop from Dell.
Secondly, if not, can I use Drive Scrubber without having to log on first. If I can use it will it allow me to attempt to completely reinstall my XP system?
Thanks for any help. I have literally spent hours and hours trying to get rid of the trojan and then for all my troubles I have locked myself out.
Thanks again!

Hello guys!
So, I decided to create a thread here in case any of you know what to do.
I've checked several internet pages, but my problem seems to persist.

I just got my desktop Windows 7 Home Premium back after a year from where it was stored, but I have forgotten my password completely.

I have tried several options of password retrieval/removal:
- Ophcrack (CD/DVD)
- TRK (Trinity Rescue Kit) (CD/DVD)

Ophcrack had an issue with not being able to find the tables, displaying the message "no drivers found", no matter what I try to click on that might help me in my case.

TRK also encounters a problem, where it says:
"Trying to find TRK on your 0 CD-drive(s)
TRK not found on CD, Checking harddisks & USB sticks (sleep 5 secs let them settle in)
Attached SCSI generic Sg0 type 5 cat:/etc/trkhd: No such file or directory
Seems we didn't find anything yet. Trying CD-drives once more. Try to find TRK on your 1 cd-drive(s)
Seems we didn't find the TRK medium
Manually enter the device on which TRK can be found (e.g. 'sda1'):

If I enter sda1, it just tells me that something is wrong/could not load/no such file in directory.

Any idea on what to do instead/do to fix it? I want to try to avoid having to reinstall my whole computer, and I appreciate to have the answer as easy as possible, because I'm not that much of a computer-person.

Hi folks, I have a T480, running 1.16 BIOS and an FDE enabled drive. If I set user+master password for FDE, then assuming I'm in BIOS setup, I can use master password to specify a new user password. That's great. However, I still need to the user FDE password to get into to BIOS setup in the first place. Even with a supervisor password set on the BIOS, the entry process is F1 > user FDE pass > supervisor pass. This seems to completely negate the benefit of having a master FDE password. Imagine user forgets their FDE password, or is hit by a bus, etc. Administrator should, in posession of master FDE password and supervisor password, be able to access BIOS and change user password. I have observed threads such as: - https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/BIOS-disc-user-password-lost-X270-ssd/m-p/379... and another thread (cannot find it now) that advises pulling the drive in order to only need the supervisor password to access setup. I don't quite understand this interaction. From my perspective, something broken about the password management. Has anybody encountered any solutions for the above scenario?

Hello all,

Am impressed at the content on this discussion group so thought I'd drop in. Have an Acer 5570 dual core with 2GB. Bought it new from Circuit City (have read many other "circuit city" horror stories about them having sold "used" equip as new...) and only after having "problems" a year or so later, discovered that someone had put a password on the Acer OS making it impossible to access backups. If anyone knows how to recover the Acer system password, let me know.

At any rate, family was surfing all these "celebrity news" sites some time back and it seemed the computer got a virus or ? Intermittency on the lan and also video screens indicated there was a problem. I use Grisoft, Adaware, spybot and gmer but found nothing, so ultimately I chose to move back to an earlier restore point before the problems started, and it seemed to stop most all problems. The only thing that is still "damaged" is that the computer now never automatically connects to the LAN when booting up. Have to always go in and "connect". Any ideas on that?

Now to the current issue. Had a wayward wireless mouse that started failing but it was causing browser and other windows to jitter and jump up and down or sideways. I finally found others that ID'd this problem to be due to bluetooth interference or a wireless mouse/interference and it turned out to be the mouse, but before I found this, I figured a virus had once again gotte... My personal opinion is that TeaTimer has an overblown sense of its own importance and tends to get in the way of things that should work. I'd get rid of it, at least long enough to see if it is contributing to your LAN issue. You should be able to uninstall it in the normal manner.

I just bought a new Chromebook 100S 11IBY aka 80QN0009US. I've registered it, created a gmail acct, etc. As directed, I've gone to the support page to enter the serial number and thus verify my warranty.  All looks fine -- the upper RH corner of the page confirms that I'm in the US and speaking English. Then I click the User Guide icon and get:Yesterday -- I only could only get Polish- or Czech-language manuals.Last night -- I saw Russian once and Arabic once.Today -- the one-and-only default is the German "Benutzerhandbuch."  I can read a little  German -- so now I have the first inkling of the contents of this UserGuide.I got some really patient help from a technician in the Tech Service Dept -- but he was stumped, too. I even downloaded the "Hardware Maintenance Manual" just because it's in English.... I've been persistent in Googling for it.  TIA for any suggestions on where to find it.

In A domain environment when i rest a user password from active directory users and computers he is unable to login to Windows with new password. He is configured to login through wifi And we are using single sign on in the wifi settings. This issue is only affecting few users. connection to company wifi network is authenticated through 802.1x. so we manualy create a wifi profile for 802.1x .

At the dual login screen the new credentials (we are using active directory credentials for wifi since it's 802.1x) are entered. First it spits an error that unable to connect to wifi. Then windows spits an error of invalid user name or password.

If we enter the old credentials at login in both wifi access and windows access we are able to login to Windows (it logs in with Cached credentials) but I it obviously is unable to connect to wifi network.

The user is a member of wifi group so he has access to wifi and he can access wifi through his iPhone.

Also another observation is that if I login with his Cached credentials and configure a wifi profile /connection using his new (reseted password) password windows spits an error that cannot connect to the network.

So the core issue is that after reseting his password from active directory users and computers he cannot connect to wifi through windows.

The workaround that currently I do is i login with his Cached credentials to Windows and then i use my own credentials to configure wifi connecti... Read more

Hi all,

We are having a real issue with local profiles / user profile service on our domain.
Our staff accounts are using local profiles. When a staff member changes their password something is happening to their profiles on the machines that their local profile is stored. When they try to login the machine is getting stuck at "Please wait for
the user profile service....". It never continues, we have left for 30 mins or more and it doesn't continue.

We are currently having to use delprof2 to remove their profiles from ALL machines they have previously logged into which is a lot of hassle.

We first noticed this issue when we upgraded our workstations from windows 7 to windows 8.
I was hoping that upgrading to windows 8.1 would fix the issue but sadly it doesn't. This is causing us major hassle on our domain.

It only affects people with local profiles... our students use mandatory profiles and they are not affected.

Our DCs are 2012 R2.

I have trawled google but cannot find any information on this. At our yearly microsoft meeting i asked our regional account manager and he couldn't believe the issue. He had never heard anything like this before.

From the event log, the only thing i can see is that it is not finishing the load of the user profile.
Under user profile service events it shows this:

Event 1: Recieved user logon notification on session 2.
Event 2: Registry file C:\Users\USERNAME\ntuser.dat is loaded at ... Read more

I bought a laptop about a year ago. Shortly after buying it, we lost the password before making a backup disk. I couldn't change the password, we run Windows 7, without the old password. Luckily, or so we think, we have one of those laptops that has a fingerprint scanner so I have been able to log on using my fingerprint as a password. However, I can't believe that I am locked out of changing the passwords on this computer.

I have learned my lesson! Always back it up first! But for now, I need some help. I am also a little worried that I may have been hacked into. A friend said that if your password all of a sudden doesn't work, that is a sign of a hacker. That is what it felt like happened to me. I swear I thought I had the password right, then all of a sudden it stops working.

Thanks so much-Bill

I have a user who has this issue: laptop computer running win7 connected to the corporate network. Using active directory. User account is in AD. The user types in username/password.
Gets the message ?user name or password is incorrect?. User can attempt 5 or 6 times, gets the same message. User is absolutely sure he is using correct credentials. (I have his creds and have done it myself). Can reboot the computer and it may then allow
him to login. Or he may get the same message. User can go to a different computer in the office. Same results. Or, this different computer may let him login multiple times, but will ultimately get the same results. I have tried on newly imaged computer with
the same results. We have checked and he is not logged into any other device anywhere. (he has an iPad with company e-mail) and what is somewhat odd (well, other than the whole event) is he is able to get his company e-mail on the iPad, no problem.

Any suggestions?

Humble apologies if question asked/answered before.

Running Win 7 64bit all updates etc, anyway have never used passwords (sole user ), so booted up computer this morning and woila there it was, wanting "user name" & "Password", never been set up for one so how can I input something that wasn't set up, a bloody nuisance, that's why I love computers, just when you get complacent, it throws a spanner in the works, your thoughts as always most appreciated.

A:Sole user never had a User Name or Password!

Hello Peter,

Since it's wanting you to enter both your user name and password instead of just password, then you might see if using step 2 and 8 in Option One of the tutorial below may help with this. Log On with User Name and Password
Afterwards, if it's still not automatically logging into your account at startup, then the tutorial below can sort that for you. Since you do not have a password, you would just leave the password fields empty. Log On Automatically at Startup
Hope this helps.

Do you get a screen with a selection of user ID's when booting now? If not and it is booting directly to Windows, then Click Start | Log Off | Log Off and see what screen choices you get. Hopefully your old user ID will be there.

If it is, then log on to it and you should be able to go to Control Panel | User Accounts and dump the creation you made for your friend.

have you tried logging in through the default admin account? Maybe you'll get access to your borken profile?

You can do this at the login screen by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del twice. Then logging in as Administrator and unless you have already set a password I believe you can login without one. At which point it's a good idea to set a password.

I am of course assuming that by your administator account you mean one you created with admin privilages.. if not and I am in fact referring to the same account you say is corrupt I am sorry, and you can ignore my post.

A good friend of ours lost her seventeen month old baby last week.

her other daughter has deleted her saved photo's of the baby, deliberately or not I don't know.

How can I retrieve these photo's for her? the recicle bin has been emptied, I have tried a system restore without result.

Can I take the hard drive to someone to dig them out?

Hi Guys

i am really hoping that this isn't a complete lost cause and someone is going to be able to help me. I have used this forum a number of times to research issues I have had and always found the answer but this is my first post so at present I am optimistic.

I was using Illustrator CS5 with a number of documents open when I had to leave my office to deal with a screaming daughter. I was then a little distracted before I managed to get back to my laptop. To my horror my laptop had installed some updates and automatically restarted. And you guessed it my files were gone. I know I know I should have been periodically saving them as I worked on them and stupidly enough I had with one but not the others.

I quickly checked the recycling bin to see if a back copy was there as I had heard that this is sometimes the case. I did find one document that was modified at the correct time and date but with some random name. I tried restoring it to find out what it was and now have no idea where it has been restored to.

Where would it be? Could this be the document I am looking for? If not can I get them back?

Please tell me there is hope.

Thanks for your time.

I use a program call Kristal for music editing on my XP machine. I have it set up for duel monitors with workspace on the left and mixer on the right. On occasions when I open it the workspace is on the right and the mixer is off screen to the right of the workspace off the monitor and inaccessible. Is there anyway of getting my mixer back on screen.

Clicking move in the popup menu when right clicking the program on the task bar only moves the workspace not the mixer.
Tiling and Cascading etc from the taskbar also doesn't seem to effect the mixer. I also tried a little program I found called 'borderline' that brings all widows onto one screen which did not work either. At present only a reinstall works of Kristal.

Any help is much appreciated!

Hey I just want to start off by saying I think it might be a good thing that I am having the issue with my pc that I am having just cuz I found this place. Ok! Now that I have the a$$kissing out of the way, here is my issue

I am trying to update a game (RTW) from the 1.3 patch to the 1.5 patch. The patching for 1.3 went smooth. Now the issue I am having is the newest patch I am trying to install fails and said is can not locate rome.exe.. I have installed the game a few times and even in trying to sent the install to C:\programfiles\... rather than the one that has the (x85) in it it still uses both directory locations. I think the scripting for the patch program is looking for the .exe file in a predetermined location rather than searching or letting me point to it. Does anyone know of a way around this issue. This is not the first time I have come across this it is just the more resent. I would even be inclines to open the patch and rewrite the script to point to the correct location but I have no idea of how this would be done...

A:Please help! I lost stuff and cant find it.... lol

Did you reboot between 1.3 and 1.5? Do you need 1.4 to get that file for 1.5? The install file should have a space in Program Files. It could be a bad script. See if they fixed it.

Hello. yesterday, all the files and folders from documents, desktop and downloads folders were missing. Then I looked for them in the Documents and Settings folder. I found them. Then I moved all the contents from 'Desktop' folder and placed in my existing desktop. I left the Downloads and Documents folder as they were. In the next restart, the Documents and Downloads were restored, but the files from desktop which i moved are not present anywhere. I have used recuva, to search in case the files were deleted, but without any luck. I restored the system to previous restore point, and suprisingly, 'some' files that were in the desktop were appeared. Still the files that i require were not present. Now i have undone the system restore. Is there any way to get the files back? Thanks.

A:How can I find my lost files?

Usually this would point to some type of malware setting either the Library or folders inside the library as hidden in the attributes,
You can use these free tools to see if they find anything,
Manually Update them before running full scans,
Try not to use your computer while the scans are running, (one at a time of course).
Uncheck the box to Active the Free trial from the final install options,
This one is the longest up to 4 hours, the others are only about 45 minutes,
There have been many posted workarounds as Showing Hidden folders, files and drives in folder options,

I need to find a way to retrieve .chk files on my HD.

There is 480+megs in one partition from one 'accident'.

I have not defragged or moved these files for fear of damaging them further.

Important old files and photos are probably in there somewhere.

Is there any technique or tool out there?

I can't find one! I NEED to do this soon.

Thanks guys

These files will be sectors of the disk, and not individual files. The info will be in binary form, in most cases I believe and not in a user friendly or recognisable form.

To attempt recovery directly with utility programs may cause further loss, unless you have good data skills now (but you would not be asking here in that case?)

Each .chk file may contain several files or parts of files, some lost files could span several .chk files.

Back them up to a CD. Take it (and the PC) to a professional data recovery company, if the data is that critical.
