I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I can't open MS Office application files from the Explore window or from Desktop.

The MS Office applications icons, such as WORD or EXCEL, have been replaced. All my Word files now bear the Wordpad icon and when clicked open as such. My Excel files now bear some other icon that no application on my machine can open.

However, when I open an office app, such as WORD or EXCEL, and then try to open a related file that now has a funny icons, they open properly.

Have MS xp; Excel 2002; Word 2002.

Grateful for advice.

A:[SOLVED] Can't open Word or Excel files from Explorer window

You probably need to set the file assocations.

If you go into your Control Panel > Folder Options > File Types (tab), then scroll down until you locate those file extensions (.doc, .xls, etc...).

Alternatively, there is probably somewhere in Microsoft word, or excel where you can automatically set file associations, but it would depend on which version you have.

The only way I can get any MS office programs to open is to right click and choose the "open with" option. I check the box to Use as default, but they still won't open the next time.
I tried run > winword /r to reset word, but that didn't help either.
All the icons are the same, a little blue chemistry beaker.
In properties, the type of files say they are, "FFV files (docx), FFV files (xlsx), etc".
How do I get these files to open the normal double click way?

A:Excel and Word files will not open in Excel and Word

Have you tried repairing the Office installation (via Start > Windows Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features > Microsoft Office (version) > Change > Repair)?

Aside from that if the file types are "FFV files (docx), FFV files (xlsx), etc", that suggests you've installed some other software that has taken over the file associations. In that case, you might consider uninstalling that software; otherwise you'll need to reset the file associations, by right-clicking each Office file-type (docx, xlsx, etc.) and using Open With>Choose default program to re-associate them with the correct Office application.

Suddenly it won't all word, excel, pdf, jpg files with message "the file format is not supported or the file is corrupted". I checked the system and found all those files were modified around 7:30PM, March 3, 2017. I copied the files to another good computer and they cannot be opened too. I created new files on the infected computer and they are ok to open.

I read some old post regarding the Ransomware, but on my computer I didn't find any decrypt instruction files, I also ran the IDTool and it didn't report anything.

I don't have regular backup of the files, is there any possibility to identify the virus and recover the file? Thanks!

First time I have asked a question so hope someone can help. Can't identify when it first started to happen but recently all excel files seem to have converted to word files. If word is already running and I try to open an excel file it opens in word and office tries to reinstall.
All excel files are displaying as word files in my documents folders. if I open excel and then open the files they do open and I can then save them in the correct format and they stay in that format.

Hope this makes sense.

i am running win xp pro. i have office pro 2003 installed with all the latest updates. The problem comes when i try to open a word or excel file from my desktop or even one of my other drives. Meaning just being able to double-click on the document and having it open. When i do this the folder that the document is in wont respond. Then the folder freezes and i must use task manager to close the folder. Keep in mind that i DONT receive any error messages when double clicking the the file.
i can however, go into start >programs >microsoft office > (word or excel) and open the program there, then open the document. but i shouldnt have to do this.
i have tried to run the repair to no avail. i have uninstalled and then reinstalled office with no luck. Norton windoc found problems (missing files) with my .net framework, so i uninstalled and then reinstalled that. That fixed the .net missing files but not my office problem.

Help me please cuz this has a tendency to be very frustrating!!!!! Tendency meaning every time i try to use the program.

Office 2003 on XP.

If I double-click a .doc or .xls file, I get a brief "Preparing to Install" window that goes away in a second or so. The app then opens to an empty screen. If I then click File/Open, I can drill down to my file and open it that way.

Anyone else have this problem? What did you do to fix it?

Thanks in advance!

A:Word and Excel won't open files directly

This is a long shot, but you may have to associate the files with the program they were meant for. On eway to do this is to open my computer, not any office program. Find the file (files) you want, right click and choose "Open With" and pick the correct program in the list.

In the future your files should open with the right program without any additional efftort.

Let me know if this works.

Hi all -- I have read a lot about similar complaints, but the solutions
are not working. I have a new DELL XPS, and installed my copy of office
onto it. Whenever i double click a document (Word/Excel)The program
launches, but the document doesnt load. I HAD Norton A/V on the system
when it was delieverd, but i uninstalled it as soon as I got it. After
reading, I thought maybe the offiveav.dll was still registered from the
old antivirus install, but i cannot find the file when searching in my system,
including hidden files/directories.
So now i have no A/V scan, had AVG, which was requesting a virus scan
of the doc before loading -- I removed it, and the virus scan message
disappeared, but the document still doesnt load.
I reinstalled office and also tried deleting the normal.dot file and
ran word to create a new one. All have not given me a solution. Also did a repair from the help menu in word without help.
BTW from within Word/Excel i can go to the open menu, and open any file
without difficulty, but I cannot tolerate this problem. Anyone else
with a sililar problem and possibly a solution.
Thanks in advance.

Hi guys,

I have a question that has stumped me so far. Here is the scenario: I am dealing with a spreadsheet that has several tabs on it. In each tab, there are several word, powerpoint, and pdf documents that are embedded as objects. My task is to write a macro, that will for each document (keep in mind its an embedded object that needs to be opened), open it with the appropriate program, and save it using a pre-assigned name (the name of the column heading and the row it is in) to a predetermined folder path. This process needs to be duplicated about 200 times. I'm not sure if this is even possible, but I know enough about vba to believe that it is. I've been working on it since yesterday, and I can't seem to tie the pieces together. Can anyone help on this?

There are a couple of ways you can do it. Go to Windows Explorer/View/Folder Options/File Types. Select Adobe Acrobat and associate it with .pdf files.

The easiest way would be to go Start/Find/Files and Folders and type *.*pdf and enter. You will get a list of the acrobat files on your computer. Highlight one of them. While holding down the shift key right click on it. Select “Open With” and make sure the little box that says to always use this program to open this type of file is checked. Browse through until you find the Adobe Acrobat reader. Once you select that you will open all of your pdf files again in Acrobat rather than Word.

A:Solved: Open office files all turned into word docs! Help!

Hi Roy,

most likely what has happened is that Windows has somehow assigned ODT files to Word.

First, check whether the extensions of the files are still ODT. For this you need to switch off the option "Hide extensions for known file types" in the Folder Options of Windows Explorer (Tools, Folder Options, View). You can now see whether the files have a .ODT or a .DOC extension.

If they are still .ODT, do a right-click on one of them while holding the Shift key and choose "Open With...". Now you check the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" box and locate "swriter" in the list above. If swriter is not there, you'll need to click on Browse and locate it on your hard disc, probably in C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org\program\

After doing this, .ODT files will always be opened by OpenOffice.org, and the icon will also change accordingly.

If the file extensions are actually .DOC, and you don't use Office, you can use the same trick to assign .DOC files to OpenOffice. Then when you modify one of these .DOC files, don't just Save them, but use "Save As" to save them as .ODT files.

All this is assuming you use Windows XP... I don't know how assigning file types works in Vista...

Ok this is a weird problem I ran into in the past with Word, and I'm having trouble finding information on it, because of the details involved.

What's happening is if i load up Excel and then goto file/open and load an excel document it comes up.

If I goto Start/Documents and try to load it from there Excel seems to hang, also if i Browse my computer and goto any excel file same thing happens, and of course it happens over a network share as well.

I didn't give it more then a minute or 2 to come up (We are talking small Excel files here nothing huge) On the last computer this happened on with Word, the documents would eventually come up, but it would take 5 minutes to load this way.

Anything I load withen Excel (Meaning I load excel and then goto File/Open, comes up instantly)

Windows knows how to handle the excel files and what program to load them with, I tried deleteing the (Is it called a mime?) entry in windows that tells excel how to handle the .XLS file, then held shift and Right clicked a .XLS file to re-enter it into Windows, just in case Windows wasn't opening it right but this had the same effect.
Any ideas?

Tried application manager which states MS Office programs & updates are downloading in the background - also says "done:". Nothing is done because it is not working. I did a restore because I downloaded some updates yesterday (these were KB... updates) and still not working. I have Office 2010. IE 11. Windows 7.

A:Cannot open MS Word or Excel

You could try running MS Office Repair. To do that open Control Panel, select Programs & Features, scroll down to Microsoft Office 2010, Right Click on it & select Change, this will open a couple of Repair options to try.

When you say you did a Restore, did you uninstall Office & then reinstall it.

Do you have any other versions of Office installed?.

I'm working on a friends PC and I can't find anything that will help me fix this.

The PC is running XP home. She can't get MS Word, Excel or IE to open but yet she can send and receive email via Outlook so we know there is a connection to the internet.

Any suggestions as to what I should be doing to fix this?

I'm not sure if it because the files are 2003 or not? When I try to open them an error message appears stating, "...the file you are trying to open is in a different format than specified by the file extension. Verify file is not corrupted and is from a trusted source..." These are my files. The interesting thing is that if I try to open the same file that I have saved within the last year (before I got 2007) then I can do it? That is, I have a cache folder of files that I go get to do calculations then save in a new job folder. The ones in the new job folder will open (also 2003), but the ones in the original cache will not? I would truly appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.

A:Can't open 2003 Excel Files in Excel 2007?

Have you attempted to set them up in 'Compatibility Mode." Not sure if this will help, just hoping it will. I have been testing the new Microsoft Office 2010 Beta 64 bit, and have yet to have this problem, and like you I have a great deal of files in 2003 (never used 2007)'

I think you can still download MS Office 2010 beta from Microsoft's download site. Good Luck.
