I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am the proud owner of an HP Envy TouchSmart 17-njr Notebook PC.  This unit comes with a Biometric fingerprint reader.  For reasons unrelated to the hardware, I had to end my computer to factory for fctory refurbishment.  My PC has since been returned.  Prior to sending the machine in for repairs, the Biometric fingerprint scanner worked perfectly.  WHen I received my computer back from the factory, the fingerprint scanner functioned normally, until I tried to install windows 10.  The installation failed, and for various reasons, I was forced to refresh my PC no less then 3 times!  Finallt, the native windows 8.1 started working again and now everything on my PC operates normally except for the Biometric fingerprint scanner. When I go to 'settings', and select 'account', and then select 'sign-in options' and try to set up the fingerprint scanner, the device works normally.  However, when logging in at start up, the device is unresponsive. Also, HP Simplepass doesn't seem to work.  When I select HP Simple pass in start or File manager or COntrol panel an error message is given: "A refferel was returned form the server".   I have already tried the following fixes: 1.) Reinstalling the driver software2.) Deleting the device in device manager and restarting the computer3.) Deleting the device in device manager and then right-clicking and asking the computer to search for new devices4.) Right clicking the biome... Read more

Does anyone know if one even exists that will work with Surface Pro 3 running Windows 10 Ver. 1511? I upgraded from ver. 10.0 when the Microsoft tech told me the newest version SHOULD contain "Windows Hello" which is apparently the software that recognizes most of the external fingerprint scanners I have found and also stores the fingerprint ID, login info for Windows as well as websites, etc. Unfortunately, even after upgrading, I don't seem to have Windows Hello on my Surface Pro 3. Is there a way for me to download and add Windows Hello on my device so the scanners I am seeing will work or a particular external scanner that comes with its own software that will remember my fingerprint as well as my login information? Or am I simply unable to use a biometric fingerprint scanner with the Surface Pro 3?

A:Biometric Fingerprint Scanner for Surface Pro 3

Sounds like can buy the Surface Pro 4 keyboard that comes with a fingerprint scanner and use it with the Surface 3: http://www.hanselman.com/blog/UsingTheSurfacePro4TypeCoverWithFingerprintReaderOnASurfacePro3.aspx

Here's how to enable Windows Hello: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/getstarted-what-is-hello

You can probably use most other fingerprint scanners too.

Alright, so this happened a while ago, but i had another issue, so i decided to hopefully get this resolved as well. Also, if this is in the wrong forum, Im sorry - i figured it's a "de-bugging" issue.

So, the problem is that when i go to save something to my computer - or, if i were to open something, as well - the auto fill/correct (not sure if thats the term) wont work as it used to. What i mean is when you normally go to save a picture from the internet, for example, you'd go to type something like 'flower'. The second you hit the 'F' key, a pop-down menu would appear, and you'd get every file whose name begins with an 'F'. Well, mine just quit working randomly not too long ago, and i havent been able to figure out what to do. So, Im hoping somebody can help me on here. Im pretty sure i've explained this clearly, but just in case, Im attaching a half-assed screenshot, with the problem area circled.

Thanks for reading!

Hello,I have now bought my first Thinkpad and am so far also satisfied. However, I have noticed 2 problems. Maybe you can help me.Problem 1 When I activate the threshold for battery charging via Lenovo Vantage, my battery indicator no longer works.According to the display, it's not charging either. Once at 5:00 and once at 9:00. each 55%. As soon as I turn it off, it charges normally and the display moves with it. And without power, it sinks normally.     Problem 2I have a feeling my fingerprint scanner isn't working properly. Very often he doesn't recognize the print or I have to put 2 or 3 times on it. This can't be normal. Every mobile phone scanner works faster and more reliably here. Thank you for your help

I have tried to get my optical mouse to work on my older computerwith an adapter. It hooks up ok But the computer does not recognize it. Does it make a difference if one is a serial mouse or a ps2 mouse? Thanks for any help.

A:I can't get my optical mouse to work on my older computer

i'll assume ( since you didn't post what type of mouse is it) that is a USB optical mouse and you connected to the computer via a USB to PS2 adaptor . Try a different adaptor is you can. Also might be that the PS/2 connector is the problem ( as in might have some pins bend or covered). On the other hand if you are using a USB to Serial port adaptor well that's the problem. Only the PS/2 will work with the optical mouse

A few days ago, I upgraded my Windows 7 laptop to Windows 10 and took Cortana for a bit of a test drive. It wasn't great but it might be useful on some occasions.

Today, I bought a brand new laptop which installed Windows 10 when I powered it on. After the installation, I was checking things out a bit and wanted to verify that Cortana was working on the new laptop. Cortana promptly told me it was not available in this region!

This makes no sense to me. I was in Southern Ontario, Canada, both times (although in different cities within the area). I can't believe that Cortana would work in London Ontario but NOT in Kitchener Ontario, which is only an hour east of London.

Does anyone have any idea how I can coax Cortana to work on the new laptop? It's not that it's a must-have app for me but it *might* be useful on occasion or even fairly often if I give it half a chance.

A:Cortana won't work on new computer; works fine on older one.

Hi, have a look at this and see if you can solve your problem.

Cortana isn't supported in the region or language you've selected. - Windows 10 Forums

Win 10 is a bit delicate and can be sensitive to some settings being changed.
There will be other posts discussing this problem- it's not uncommon.

The Biometric Fingerprint device on my HP Pavilion dv6 laptop is not working.I get the message:1. cecom, You have an older model of the dv6 series. Your computer wants to run the Digital Persona version of the Security software.  Over the early years, HP sometimes did refer to the DP software as HP SimplePass; the programs are actually two separate pieces of code and are not associated with one another except that they do a similar job and both do use a fingerprint device driver. You want to install the fingerprint device driver first from this page: Validity Fingerprint Sensor Driver Reboot the computer and log in. Next, install the Digital Persona Program from this Page:  HP SimplePass by Digital Persona Reboot the computer and log in. The fingerprint program should show up -- I think (it has been several years since I've seen it) on your Taskbar or perhaps as an icon on your Desktop.  Click to open and get started. I think there is a builtin help file, too. There is one more bit:  you will want to export your webcards (passwords and webpages).  After you get the fingerprinter setup up, I think (in this version) the backup is under "backup and restore" in the lower left corner. Good Luck! This may help, although I am not sure about the content or whether it relates to your DP version:Using HP SimplePass Fingerprint Reader (Windows 7, Vista) I apologize for being so vague -- I used to know the subject quite well; it has just been a long time since I have supported this package and my not... After a major battle against evil malware forces (with a great deal of help from stonangel!) I've learned tricks and tips that no computer user should ever have to learn. All I have to say is, I am glad I have an above average understanding of this stuff, but strangely enough - I want more.

Now that my immediate threat is over, I find myself reading other postings in the hijackthis forum, some things I see but others I don't - how do you learn what to look for? Is there a forum somewhere? A website? I did a ton of Googling over the past couple of days on different .exe and .dll files my biggest problem was *knowing* which site was a real help and which ones were a trip into the danger zone.

I read one Admins post, I don't remember what forum, how he often surfs into dangerous waters to find the bad stuff and I thought to myself, I want to do that. Fighting this stuff is almost addictive.

A:How Does "fill In The Blank" Work?

I am not so sure you want to go where no man fears to go until you have spent a great deal of time preparing yourself and have a separate, isolated and quarantined computer on which to practice self-infection.
Another, and more productive way might be to apply to Grinler for admittance into the HJT log analysis training programme. You will learn a lot about malware and its irradication from infected computers, and after graduating, be allowed to help user members get rid of ever-prevalent malware- - -a very real contribution to the fight.

Quite often I am unable to put a yellow color fill over a word or phrase. I have finally found the solution: there are two toolbars and two color fill tool paint cans only one of which will work. Only the one on the drawing toolbar will do this.
The wrong toolbar begins with"auto text", and "all entries"-it's paint chart is empty
The correct toolbar begins with"draw table" and "eraser" and it has a paint can with real colors.
There doesn't seem to be a way to identify the names of the various toolbars that might be in use. the identifications I tried to use are from word 97.

I would like to add the Adaptec 2-Port USB 2.0 PCI Card to my system so I can take full advantage of my Canon Printer which has a 2.0 input slot.

Presently, I'm using a Belkin hub to connect all of my USB 1.1 accessories to the USB slot on the computer.

The salesperson at the local CompUSA store told me that the current hub will work for 2.0, all I have to do is buy the 2.0 PCI card. The hub was purchased before 2.0 become common (doesn't indicate anything about USB 2.0 in the instructions), but the person was adamant that it would pass the 2.0 data rate with no problem. I'd like to do that to save having to buy longer (10 foot) cables to reach the PCI slot on the computer case.

Can you confirm this method will work?

A:USB 2.0 work with older hub?

The salesman is full of it, no surprise there. That hub most certainly will NOT pass data in excess of the 12mbit rate of USB 1.1, though it'll work fine at that speed on a USB 2.0 connection.

I recently installed Windows 10 Pro 64Bit on this Dell Latitude E5540 laptop but can't get the fingerprint working...

I also installed the Dell data protection security tool for windows 10 (version:,A14) from Dell E5540 Support and Drivers page.

Windows had already recognized the the fingerprint reader as Synaptics FP Sensors (WBF) (PID=003f) under Biometrics. But whenever I run the Dell Data Protection Console and try to register my fingerprint it always says:

"The fingerprint reader is not connected. Connect the reader."

The device is enabled in device manager and has no errors. It used to work fine when I had windows 7. Am I missing some drivers or software for Windows 10? I need the FP reader working ASAP.

Okay, so I'm thinking of buying my cousin an older PC game for his birthday, but it's from 1994:

"Jazz Jackrabbit" (Original Release For PC DOS 3.5)

From what I've heard, Windows 7 has better backwards compatibility than Windows XP did, but I'm still concerned that after he unwraps his gift, and later tries to play the game on his computer (assuming his computer is Windows 7), he won't be able to. Will he likely still have problems getting the game to work on a Windows 7 computer, even if he tries to install the game directly from the original CD ROM?

I've read the sticky at the top of this particular forum, and I'm not sure I understand it all, but it seems to say I will need to install my printer drivers myself.

I have an HP Deskjet D4160 and a Samsung ML-1210. I have the original discs for both of them. Once I'm up and running, do I just pop the CDs in the tray and install the drivers like usual?

Drivers would not be available on the CD for an OS that did not exist when they were made. You should check the printer's website for Win 7 (or Vista drivers - they will work most of the time).

Win 7 contains drivers for much common hardware. Sometimes, they are reduced in functionality and you need the manufacturer's one to get all features. But even for those that have no drivers at all, generic drivers should be enough to allow normal printing functions without advanced features.

MS ceased support for parallel ports some time ago, so we are talking USB printers, of course.

New problem from older thread http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/644320-schematic-help-connecting-wires.html
thanks for all your help, i finally got the connector on the back to operate....
It finally clicked that I had to keep the connections closed in order for to operation to take hold.

Now the only problem I'm having is connecting my xbox 360 to it via the vga adapter.
I have wired up the db-15 rgb2 output to the same pin 1-15 to a hd-15 vga plug.
I plug in the xbox to the adapter and nothing. Doesn't do anything.
I might be missing something, but I'm not sure so I included all the pages that have anything to do with that port.

and some pictures of the little adapter I made

I've got a couple of - potentially - really good CD Roms that were written for 3.1 and Win 95, which (even after installation) won't work with XP. I've tried the "Run as.............." facility in 'Properties' but the HD doesn't recognise the installation programme or can't locate the CD Rom. Does this mean that the discs are too old for XP and won't work with it, or can my OS be cajoled to access them?

This has my head spinning. I am running a HP Envy desktop 700-414 with windows 10 pro.I have tried 3 different USB fingerprint readers of 2 versions 1) Bio-key and 2) Verifi 5100.Both are recognized in device manager and allowed me to check for updated drivers. But when attempting to set up in Windows hello, all readers do not detect any fingerprints. I just keep touching the sensor(s) and it never advances.I?ve Ran services.msc  and started the Windows Biometric Service and setit as AutomaticI?ve also set the Biometric policy in ?gpedit.msc? and Allowed the use of biometrics and Allowed users to log on using biometrics. Ive attempted to install manufacturers (Zvetco..Verifi 5100)  driver using an executable and a prompt states ?to use this product windows biometric framework must be installed) The biometric co-processor is present in the ?devices and printers section.I?ve tried all available USB 2 and 3 ports.I?ve run a SFC scan.Cant try it in safe mode as the services don?t run in safe mode. Totally lost. Am I missing something? Has anyone experienced this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Neither the fingerprint sensor or the HP SimplePass software are working after a recent Windows 10 update. Tried updating, repairing, reinstalling both the Validity Sensor driver as well as the SimplePass software but it still does not work. Read many posts in these forums and tried various suggested solutions but none of them solved the problem.
