Lenovo ThinkPad W520 - 30 minute shutdown problem

Q: Lenovo ThinkPad W520 - 30 minute shutdown problem

Hey this is my first post as I'm new here. I have been having an issue which has been going on for several months.

Every 30 minutes, to the second, my laptop completely shuts down (I have tried running in safe mode too). No matter what programs are running, or aren't, it continues to shut down.

I have made a work-around, where I put the computer to sleep roughly every 28 minutes, then I wake it. This seems to reset the 'timer'. Lately it seems my computer will not sleep properly, or it will not wake from sleep (power button starts slowly blinking, not pulsing, green to black), however I think this is a different unrelated issue.

Things I have tried but have NOT worked: Running without battery, re-seating RAM, new thermal paste (I thought the problem originally had to do with the system temperature as it was getting quite hot), I have made sure there are NO TIMERS for sleep, or shut down set for the graphics card (NVIDIA Quadro 2000M) or in Lenovo Power Manager. I have made sure my drivers are up to date and that my BIOS is also up to date.

One more noteworthy thing; I had problems with my WMI event registration/viewer as it caused my computer to crash at completely random (minutes to hours, even to days) times. I ran a script I found (from a reputable website and I did a backup first) to fix this error I found in my event viewer (it did fix it). The 30 minute shut-downs did not happen immediately after I ran the script, but rather about a week later, perhaps these are related.

Please help me out here, I thought I would try my luck posting on some forums before I actually got someone to come in and diagnose it.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad W520 since many years and it is still one of the best laptop compared to those available in the market. I have successfully upgraded in the past my HD with a 256 GB Samsung SSD 850 PRO (MZ-7KE256BW). Now I would like to replace this HD with the newest 1 TB SAMSUNG 860 PRO SERIES 1TB SATA3 MZ-76P1T0B/EU.Someone know if there could be problems of compatibility? P.S. the operative system was windows 7 but I moved subsequently to windows 10. Thank you in advance for your reply.

This laptop has been driving me crazy with the number of BSOD's encountered.  I receive at least 1 per week but often three to four over the last 4 months or so.
I have updated all of the drivers as well as the BIOS from the Lenovo site but the frequency of these crashes has not diminished at all.  I know of quite a few friends that have this same model and they are not reporting these kind of issues.  Just wondering if anyone can guide me to what I might try next.
Below please find the lising of the crashes I have had.  The minidump files are here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3064584/Minidump.zip

Dear Experts, I was noticing this problem just after my warranty is expired.  My Lenovo Ideapad flex 15 shuts down exactly in every 30 minutes. Here are some clues.Shutdown even when it is in bios, it is not a driver problem. Reset the bios to default but no outcome.Did comprehensive hardware test using Lenovo Solution Center but not showing any issue. All hardware temperature is normal. There was some dust in CPU fan, causing problem to run it smoothly. Removed the dust, now it is running smoothly. But still, I am having this problem.Removed the BIOS battery for the whole night, no outcome. If I put the laptop in sleep(before 30 min) and wake up immediately, I don't see this problem. I suspect this is some hardware or bios firmware issue (i.e probably some internal timer is shutting down laptop and putting the laptop into sleep may reinitialize the timer). Any idea how to resolve this problem? As another try, I want to flash the bios firmware, but I can't find any link in lenovo support center to get bios firmware for Lenovo Ideapad Flex 15.  Any help is highly appreciated. My BIOS version: 8ACN34WW Thanks/Babu

One stick of 16GB will work (using that now), two sticks however shuts down the system 1 minute into power up (fyi makes it into Windows desktop, whole process took 1 minute before power down)...
I used Crucials memory checker, received two DDR4-2400 sodimm 1.2v cl17 16gb dual sided chips (kit of 2x16GB).  System would power up, go into Windows 10, be up for Approx 1 minute and system would power off.  You cannot repower the system, it turns on and shuts off immediately.  Pulling power to the device, plugging in again, will let it power to same point as before.  Approx 1 minute into having both modules installed.
Currently using a single module of the 16gb DDR4-2400 sodimm.  The stick that came out was from the manufacturer, an 8gb with QC M02089 on it, no other markings.  It will not work in either socket with the 16gb chip, so can't go 24gb onboard (must be different clock or voltage).  TC steps as follows:
- Both 16 gb chips installed, power off after 1 minute up.
- Single 16gb chip, stable
- Single 8gb chip, stable
- Single 16gb chip with old 8gb, no boot
- Swap 16gb chips in sockets, power off after 1 minute up
- New set of 16 gb modules, same issue as before (these were slightly higher frequency of 2666MHz)
Seems like a power issue on the mobo, too much draw.  As a cannot find any information on the installed chip itself I don't know what I can do beside stay at 16gb.  This could potentially e... Read more

M93p uses DDR3, something is wrong if you have DDR4 in it. I personally used M93p with 32GB of RAM, four sticks of 8 GB RAM is a max for it I think. I used Dell-branded DDR3-1600.

There is a fan problem with Lenovo W520 when running Windows 10.  Fan is not spining at it's maximum when games are played.  For example when you play World of Tanks, fan will not spin fast enough and you might encounter problems, like fps drop.  To remidy this problem you need to download and install TPFanControl.  When this application is running fan will spin at it's maximum value of 64 when needed. Lenovo development team, please work on power manager or some sort of fix for this.

Hey guys, strange problem, unit started freezing before it could go the desktop so I did a system restore and now can easily get to the desktop but first issue is that the owner always had to enter his password to enter windows, now that doesn''t happen, when booted the system will go straight to windows. Also rightlicking on the main folders such as My Pictures My Documents e.t.c doesn't work so I am guessing it's a permissions issue. I looked at the Folder Options but not seeing anything there regarding permissions, I want to advise the owner to backup all files first before I should proceed to do anything but since I can't copy and paste that won't work, any ideas please?

So, I have 3 problems and don't know how to fix them and I would really appreciate some help.

1. When I play lol, it keeps minimizing every minute and I have to click back on lol icon to return to the game. It's really annoying.

2.Internet is randomly shutting down every now and then.

3. When I'm writing a sentence my prompt disappears and I have to click back in the box so I can continue with my writing.

Oh, and I bought my computer yesterday so I just downloaded lol and google chrome and doubt that viruses are causing any of these problems.

Dear all,
I'm looking for some help to understand the possible causes of the BSOD that I've met randomly while using my new Lenovo Thinkpad T430 - 2349-PHG.
The BSOD is not the only problem I'm having. While using the Laptop, sometimes the screen starts to shake, then the laptop shuts down without showing the BSOD. Sometimes, the BSOD appears. Each time I've to restore the Loptop to a previous point in order to make it work.
I've tried to run memory test using memtest86+-5.01, after 10 hours work and 9 runs, there was no errors.
I've tried to use driver?s verifier, however, when I set it up to work, the BSOD appears.
Attached is the recommended ZIP file to analyze the problem, only two dmp files are available.
I hope that I get some help regarding this matter soon.
Thank you in advance for your time and help.
Best regards

Dear community, I realize that there are several threads on W520 shutdowns, but I haven't quite found a similar problem to mine: A random, sudden shutdown occurs while the laptop is on battery. The problem does not occur when using the power adaptor. It also seems to have nothing to do with physical movement of the laptop, nor with power consumption/heat. After going blank from one second to the next, the laptop restarts. Seeing that the laptop works fine with the power adaptor, is there any reason to believe that components on the main board could be the problem? If not, I could just get another battery, even though this still seems ok. Thanks for your help! Branagh

Hi all! I'm a new Thinkpad user and I've got to say, the Thinkpad experience is great. It's refreshing to come to a laptop with more features and better accessibility compared to other laptop brands. I love that nearly every inch of my Thinkpad is easy to get to and fix if something goes wrong. That said, I've been having screen issues lately.  Basically, every time I move the Thinkpad off my lap and onto my bed, the screen slightly ripples in the middle. Like this, except it occurs towards the lower middle half of the screen. Gently pressing on the bezels of the screen (left and right) also cause ripples in the same area (lower middle half)--maybe this is supposed to happen, since you're deliberately pressing against the screen. Moving the screen up or down also makes the ripple occur. I always move my screen back and forth as gently and firmly as I can--with both hands gripping either side of the screen. But even when I'm being super careful, the screen still ripples. Tapping the back of the screen ever so slightly also causes ripples. Now that's what's worrying me the most. A gentle, slight tap shouldn't cause ripples on the screen, surely. The ripples get BIG if I tap the lower middle of the Thinkpad's lid. I can't say that I've noticed this behaviour before. It seems to have started just recently. I removed the screen's plastic frame and cleaned the sides of the LCD, thinking that something was stuck between the frame and the LCD, but doing ... After much research, it seems obvious that there are multiple flavours of the W520 Sudden Shutdown problem? The very long thread / topic of W520 shuts off intermittently, no BSOD or shut down provides lots of information, 141 pages and counting!  That's kinda sad... Wanted to share, and perhaps help some others on what I finally found - took some diagnosis. I also think my scenario applies to other ThinkPad machines as well, and perhaps even other manufacturers on the same / similar MoBo's? A test you can try:With the machine off, turn it on, and start a separate timer - at the same exact time. When you can, press F1 to head in to the BIOS settings.Let it sit there, don't disturb the PC for at least 30 minutes. The problem I was facing was that EXACTLY at 30 minutes, on the dot, every time, the machine would suddenly shut down.  Clearly a hardware / firmware timer was expiring.  Nothing to do with Windows or the OS. Some suggestions out there are:Overheating, and at a timer expiry, temps are checked, and the system shuts down to save itself - well, my temps hovered between 40C and 65C, with an occational brief touching of 70C - no where near concerning levels of 80, 90 or 100C - maybe? But seems like such a check would be more often, and to be SO sudden?  Hmph...I tried the "memory door tabs adjustment" - helps with static buildup issues / using the PC in bed - no joy.I tried the re-seating of the RAM - no joy.I tried the "put ... I had to do a clean reload of the system using my Recovery Disc set that I got when I bought this laptop new. It took multiple attempts but the system finally reloaded after 4-5 attempts and Windows 7 updates went well with 6-7 series before being fully updated. My comcern now is the drivers. As Windows 7 support is ending soon and this laptop isn't Windows 10 compatable, at least it wasn't when Wndows 10 was released I'm scrambling to make sure everything is up to date, especially drivers now that the recovery is done. When I go online and entre my model and serial number it fails repeatedly to scan for driver updates. Am I doing something wrong?  The laptop has been, and still is, very relible and is for my personal use. I have no need for a new laptop and mostly use it when I'm traveling. What is the best course to follow to make sure it's fully up to date driver wise? Is there a newer tool I should be using or just download all the support page drivers for the W520. The only things that aren't stock about this system is the added memory and SSD that I added shortly after buying the laptop.

A:W520 ThinkPad Updating Drivers

Support page for W520 lists antique drivers. The device does work fine with vanilla install of Windows 10 (1803,1903,1909 etc) and drivers from Windows Update. The only thing that was missing was driver for SD card reader, but the one from W530 works fine. You lose some Windows 7 niceties like Lenovo Power Manager etc though, but it works well enough w/o them. P.S. Fresh install of Windows 10 is possible using the old Windows 7 license code. It's not supposed to work anymore, but it does. I'd suggest doing that, rather than in-place upgrade of Windows 7.

For those tasks you wouldn't need a Core i7 or discrete graphics, save yourself some money and go for the T530.The only disadvantage would be 1600x900 instead of 1920x1080, but it would be hard to see the difference.

Hello all,  I just got a Thinkpad Mini Dock 3 with the USB 3.0 port. However, the dock port does not work with my W520 (which has USB 3.0 on it). The dock port does work with my X220 (yes, old school), however (which also has 3.0 port). So, the fault is not the dock, but some kind of issue between the W520 and the Mini Dock. I've uninstailled and reinstalled the 3.0 hub driver, updated drivers, and searched everywhere but cannot find a fix. Can anyone offer a suggestion on how to fix this issue? Thanks kindly,Dylan

Hello,I understand that this question was probably asked a million times, but unfortunately I haven't found a viable solution for my problem. I'll try to describe it in details. I bought a pre-owned W520 laptop, that's supposed to have a Windows 7 Pro. For some reason, the previous owner removed the COA sticker, that was located under the battery. The hard disk is also wiped clean, so no recovery partition is available. I want to install and activate a geniune Windows 7. Some pirated copy of windows is installed there, I tried to extract a license key with Belarc Advisor, but it was some generic OEM key found on the internet, i.e. not genuine. The summary of my talk with the local support and service center- I can't just install any copy of Windows 7 (say download an image from Microsoft), it won't activate without a COA key that is missing- if I can get a recovery media for this exact laptop, it will maybe activate from the key in BIOS- we don't know where to get this recovery media so if someone could help me with these questions- can I legally download a recovery image for this laptop (I only found some links for windows 10 downgrade, which I'm not eligible for)- can I extract the key from BIOS and maybe install a generic Windows 7 - is there even an OEM key in BIOS (because the guys from support center told me it's only for windows 8 and 10, not for 7) and will it activate? thanks in advance. Oleg.

Mock me if you like, , but...  Figured I would share, so others might benefit? There are a few flavours of AC Power issue out there (some bad 170W Power Supplies, some Lenovo Battery Manager issues, etc.), but if you are greeted with the warning on your W520, and are using a true 170W Power Supply, stop and check the Power Supply plug connection IN to the dock. I know sounds ridiculous, but...  First, given the slotted construction of the 170W Power Supply connector, NEVER force anything!  But, once you've lined that up, are sure and slid it in to the dock, at that point, make SURE that it's really fully seated in to the connector!  PUSH it to ensure! I've been having the issue, and finally realized, on my setup, there is an extra "hump" you have to push the connector past. (How long have I had this machine?  FACEPALM!)  If you plug it in, it will work, but give errors and be problematic on charging.  Once you FULLY plug it in, that problem goes away. I think it's a function of the middle pin not being fully and properly seated - so a test was failing (making it think it was a 90W supply?). And a PS for folks: The original dock for the W520 was the "4338-30U (eSATA)", 170W. I can report that the "4338-35U (USB 3.0)", 170W DOES in fact work with the W520. Sadly (as I expected), no, you don't get another USB 3.0 port on the back of the dock.  It de-rates to a USB 2.0 port, but that port does work -... I recently upgraded to Windows 10 when installing a new Samsung SSD 850 EVO 500GB and now my internal SD card reader which I think is a Ricoh will not work when I insert a SD above 4GB, it works for smaller cards.  I have tried installing the drivers from the Lenovo KB and my Windows Troubleshooter says all drivers for that device are up to date.  One thing that I have noticed is that when I insert the card the Ricoh device pops up, but also responds with an uninstalled PCI Serial Port.  I do not know what device this is, but it doesn't show up unless an SDHC card is inserted and remains after I take it out, but when I do a restart it has disappeared and it is not there if I insert a 4gb SD card first.  Another thing I have noticed is that the card does pop up in the Disk Management utility, but it is unreadable.  I have checked the card on cameras and a friend's computer and know that it works and is not corrupted.  See pics below and the PCI serial port ID # and you can see my frustration... hopefully someone can help fix this issue, I need to read SDHCs for work all the time and would prefer not to have to buy a peripheral device to do the job...

I am going under the assumption that this page is right in telling me what the most up to date driver for my system is (I have a Quadro 1000M). Both Lenovo Vantage and System Update tell me there are no updates, and yet my most recent NVidia driver was from 2016 and several versions behind what the website says. No matter how many times I've downloaded and installed that package the driver stayed the same, so I gave up and used DDU to wipe the NVidia drivers out. Then I tried using the package again to install the driver and still it appears to do absolutely nothing regarding the NVidia Card. It doesn't appear under Device Manager. There's only an Intel HD Graphics 3000 and a Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. What am I doing wrong?

Since I have updated my S440 from Win 8.1 to Win 10 Education I have some problems with the shutdown. If the notebook is on for a short time, shutdown works normally. If it is on for longer time and I try to shutdown, the keyboard lights stay on and its still making sound, so it`s not really off. Moreover I need to press the on/off button for a few seconds, that it will be completely off. Does anybody have the same problems or can help me? Thanks!!!

I have a Lenovo W520 and have been getting the fan error at start up, which shuts the computer right back down. I have just replaced the fan the other day and still keeps happening. I have the computer apart enough to tell that the fan starts spinning after I press the power button but stops after several seconds. Then the fan error comes back up. Any helpful suggestions, I don't really want to replace the mother board

Hi! I've recently done a BIOS update using the built-in lenovo update center. but alas - it seems to be a fail as I can't boot anymore. As far as I understand, I can recover BIOS using Crisis recover disk program, but I have no idea where to get the BIOS file (.wph) for my w520, any ideas? Thanks!

A:Where is BIOS.wph? Lenovo w520

Hi there Dacadey,
The first post here: LENOVO BIOS RECOVERY may provide some insight to you with your particular issue. The post mentions the .wph file.
I'm not entirely sure it will completely answer your question but as I said, may provide some insight to help you solve your problem.

I just bought one of these Dell D630 laptops which are coming off lease (32 bit, 2gb ram, XP Professional)

The issue is that this machine takes right around ten minutes to shut down. I ran a number of tests and everything came out fine:
Memtest86+ ok (I only ran it an hour, but no errors. I'm running the native diagnostics now, and it's testing memory)
SpinRite: perfect
System file check: no corrupt files
It's fully updated.

So I'm guessing there's some process running which is causing this, but I don't know how I would determine that since the shutdown process gets to the point where all the icons on the desktop have disappeared, so I can't get a task manager running to see what's really going on. But the wallpaper stays up for ten minutes, and then finally the little fanfare plays and it goes blue and says it is logging off and it seems to shut down normally from then on.

So I need to determine how I might get this machine to not get stuck on the Wallpaper and shut down normally.

A:Solved: ten minute shutdown

Hi, I'm not having much luck with another post here having shutdown problems.
They can be a pain but here goes.
Memtest should run for about 8 passes - overnight even better.

In Task Manager - shutdown one program at a time - then shutdown the Pc.
You may see what is sticking at shutdown

This happens periodically without warning. I have ran my Antivirus scans in Safe Mode and in regular mode. I also have Malware-Bytes installed and ran a quick scan and a Full System scan and have found nothing out of the ordinary. Also, for some reason I see "Test Mode Windows 7 Build 7601" at the bottom right corner of my screen. Could this be causing the problem? How do I get rid of that and how do I fix the shutting down problem? I just installed CPUID HWMonitor so I can check my temps the next time that happens but I'm running pretty cool at the moment. Help me please...
Also, I have 2 video cards installed but this was happening before I installed the second video card.

A:Windows will shutdown in 1 minute.

Has your copy of Windows 7 been activated?  If not, and you've used it over 30 days, you'll get this after 5 hours of use.

Hi, I've been struggling with my brandnew P1 fan for 2 days now, and I'm afraid I am not the one winning...It doesn't really make a difference which setting I use (intelligent cooling, performance or cool&quit): the fan runs every minute (or two) for a second or 5. even when I'm not working and only browsing, every minute: it starts, tuns for 5 to 10 seconds and off again. I can imagine that in those short period the cpu doesn't really get any cooler, so it needs to run again and again.Really annoying, and I wonder whether it is really necessary because my previous laptop (also a high end machine) only ran the fan when I was compiling code or something similar. Just now I was having lunch so the laptop was idle, and it kept on starting the fan. And besides the settings in the lenovo vantage software I can't seem to find any other way to control it. (well, found a setting in the bios, but then I had to deselect 'performance', and performance is the reason I bought this laptop. Is there a way to make the fans run longer at a time? Or is maybe the max temperature set too low? I find it hard to believe that a laptop needs to run the fans so often, even when I'm doing nothing (nothing is running chrome and outlook  and whatsapp and spotify (not playing music) and loaded visual studio but not using it). CPU usage is < 10%, memory usage is 11,5 GB from 32) My device is a 8750H with 32GB RAM and 2 512GB SSD

Hi guys,

I've had x64 win7 installed for about a month, no troubles until now.

The last few days, whenever I shut down the PC for the night the "shutting down" screen is displayed for more than 15 minutes, at this point I just turn it off via the front power button on the case as I'm afraid to leave it all night saying that as I'm not that tech savvy.

Is there any way to figure out what's going on with the shutdown process? The following morning it starts up fine, and I restart with a disk check that comes up fine.

A:Windows 7 x64 15 minute+ shutdown (timeout?)

That is usually caused by a program that takes forever to close. What happens if you shut down as soon as it boots?

Next time, before you shut down, end half of the processes in Task Manager. Be sure to record which ones you close!

If the shutdown is quick, you know the rogue process is in that half. If not, try the other half. From there you can narrow it down further until you identify which program is causing the hang.

Yesterday, while using my computer, my anti-virus 'Microsoft Security Essentials' popped up stating it had found a virus. Within a second, a windows update window popped up with an update ready to install, followed immediatly by 'AntiSpyware Doctor' and a window saying 'Windows has encountered a serious error and will shut down in one minute' which it then proceeded to do. This continues to appear everytime the computer is started.

Starting the computer in safe mode allowed me to use Malware Bytes to eliminate Antispyware docter, as it no longer appears when starting the computer, however the error message ,above, still continues. I believe the problem occurs only when the computer is connected to the internet as it does not occur if i am able to stop my computer from automatically connecting to the internet upon startup.

I tried a system restore, however it fails and reports a problem with a file in the drivers folder in the system 32 folder. I am unable to interact with this file at all as the computer tells me it is unable to find the source disc whenever i try.

I have access to a Windows Install disc.

New to the forum and new to viruses and I wonder if anyone could help me please.
I'm running Win7 x64 and all of a sudden, my PC will not stay on.  Either in Windows or Safe Mode, I can't do anything that takes longer than one minute - it always shuts down and restarts (With a warning when in windows).  It will not stay on long enough for me to do anything but I can't see anything "Unusual" in the process list.
I'm happy to do anything that's asked of me, as I'm a bit of a novice with this stuff but I'm having to use a borrowed PC as I need mine for some important work, so any quick replies would be apprecieted.

Dear Community,As the title suggests, I did a full system reset recently. That was because my old HDD seemed to start dying and slowing down the system a lot.Now I have a brand new HDD (Seagate firecuda 2TB) and installed everything I found on the Lenovo support page for my System (4284-4DG) after installing all important Windows updates. So far so good - I guess. At least Lenovo Service Bridge/System Update don't suggest any further software. But I'm facing some issues already:1) The Hotkey Feature Integration seems not to work! Not only do I not see any OSD, but also half of the Fn+FXX combinations aren't working (like Fn+F5 - Fn+F8, Fn+F2, Fn+F3...).2) I can therefore not access the Communications Utility (unless searching the .exe) nor the Connections Tab (F5). In the latter one Bluetooth isn't even listed (but always on)3) The Power Manager is very limited in functionality like I do not have a Battery Management button nor can I adjust the default screen brightness in the Energy Profiles. I remember that this was very possible before.4) The Device Manager shows still unknown objects: PCI-Communication Controller (simple)(? => loose translation from German, maybe slightly different English name) and an unknown device. As said before, I installed every driver I could find in the list from Lenovo. I have no clue what this could be.5) Windows Update shows me some optional Updates which I did not install yet, because I always read that one should install drivers from the PC ... Read more

At home, I am using a Docking station (ThinkPad Mini Dock Series 3) which has a different power demand than the W520. The docking station works properly but does NOT charge the laptop. So, I plugged in a spare charger-plug directly into the laptop but it will not charge. My logical guess is that the docking power plug is over-riding the laptop plug. Is there a way around this so that I won't lose power while working from home using the docking station?

A:Lenovo W520 Docking Power Supply

I was recommended to purchase 135Watt charger for the dock station. I received it last night and when I went to dock my laptop, I started smelling something burning. THe laptop won't boot up. The fingerprint reader, microphone and CapLok keys are lit but it will not boot.
