Running 3d Locks Computer

Q: Running 3d Locks Computer

About 3 months ago my computer just started randomly locking when I was running 3d games. I wasn't having any problem in the world running 2d games so I was thinking maybe the GPU or video card memory was overheating. So I pulled a fan and heatsink off an old 386 processor I had and fixed it to the GPU and still the same problem.

Since then I've tried using a TNT2 and swapped out or replaced all hardware except for the motherboard and processor. Even tried changing the power supply. All drivers are up to date. I've tried 3 different BIOS revisions. I've tried using at least 5 versions of the Nvidia detonator drivers (I keep them archived in case of problems like this.) It locks up if there's sound being used or sound completely off and if the sound card isn't even in the computer. I'm running DX8.1 and nothing changed, software or hardware, when the problem occurred.

Video card is not overclocked. AGP aperture set in BIOS to 64 meg. I've defragged the HDD recently. Happens with any 3d game no matter how low the settings for the game are set.

Common games being played: CounterStrike, Monkey Island 3, WC3, Ultima Online (3d Client) Q3

System Specs:

Athlon 1.4Ghz
768 meg RAM
GeForce 2 GTS 32meg / TNT2 32meg (TNT2 for testing if it was the vid card)
34.6 Maxtor HDD
Asus A7V133 (not using the onboard RAID at the moment)
Win2k Pro

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

My computer, a HP Pavilionzv6000 laptop with Win XP, runs slower that it used to. I don't know how many programs are running that don't need to be running. I may have a virus because every time the AVG program runs, it finds a virus. Sometimes it can't fix the problem so I put it in the vault. I have the Zone Alarm firewall set on High. Also, often the computer just locks up and ai have to disconnect the power cord, and remove the battery to reboot it when no keystroke functions.

Please help!

I do have a Windows XP Home Edition Reinstall disk

Over the last few weeks, my PC has been having fits running slow, locking up, 1 BSOD (KERNEL.STACK_INPAGE_ERROR), stuttering sound, windows getting locked, mouse pausing and freezing, etc. It frequently requires hard boots as it won't respond to Ctrl-Alt-Delete. This happens in safe mode as well.

The CPU usage is often stuck at 100%, even with no applications running. I can't see any pattern to it. It can run fine for a few hours, then suddenly get stutter and lock up.

The only thing has changed recently is that a week or two before this started happening, the CMOS battery was giving error messages on reboots, so I replaced it. I have not been able to see anything wrong in the BIOS settings. Device Manager gives no errors.

I haven't seen any signs of malware, but just in case, I have attached the normal logs. I run ZoneAlarm Free and Microsoft Security Essentials. Virus scans have been negative. I also ran Lavasoft Ad-Aware, but it found nothing other than harmless cookies.

I have cleaned/vacuumed out the system (which I do regularly anyway). I removed and reseated all the cards and memory. I checked that all the fans were working.

I have run CleanUp! (also a normal thing on my routine maintenance). The disk is not fragmented. I removed what programs and autoruns I was sure about.

I've got a problem with my Win XP system. A few days ago after a program conflict and system crash I had to reinstall my DSL utility program/drivers/modem etc...

The installation went well except that something seems to be running now in the background. I can log onto the Web, communicate and run all programs, but there is a regular tone annunciating (sounds like when a USB device connects) a bonging sound which occurs regularly.

Because I thought that there was some sort of conflict I clicked on "Add Hardware Wizard" and got the following message.

"Cannot run two device installations.
You can install only one device at a time, another device installation is underway, when it is finished you can try the Wizard again."

This seems to be the problem....the system apparently is hung up trying to install a device and never can complete that task.

Is there some simple way to stop this process? and in turn turn off the constant tone.

Thank you

Fred Gendler

A:Add Hardware Wizard locks up running in Win XP

Boot to safe mode and see if issue is still present. If the other device is not USB, then it should eventually install.

Also look in device manager and see if there are any bangs (? or !)

Would it be a RAM or CPU issue causing an application lockup? When I run two online applications, one of them locks up. One uses 348 meg of memory [java Platform SE Binary] and the other uses 419 meg of memory [java].

A question about missing information, which version of JAVA are you running? You can go to java.com: Java + You and check if you have the latest. Also, what are the applications? Maybe someone else had the same problem.

Hey y'all
I have a problem with my PC. Sometimes when I leave my computer on and leave it idle for a while and then come back to it the whole thing will be locked up. I can move the mouse around but as soon as I click something it will lock up and the time will be locked to the time when it had locked up. The whole thing basically locks up causing the green vista loading mouse circle to replace the pointer. The only way to shut it off is to hold down the power button for about 5seconds. Is this a hardware issue or a software issue? I'm boggled by this.

Specs are as follows:
Intel Core 2 quad Q6600 (2.4Ghz)
4Gb Ram

Nvidia 9500GS

hi,,,, am i lead to believe that you now think this is not a security issue hence you posted here, (if you do think its a security issue you need to post in the correct forum.) take a look in event viewer for more info related to the crashes,, also post back any info or error codes, also take a look in task manager to see if there are any processes that are using up all the CPU, post those back too, also look in device manager for any yellow triangles and red X's and lastly look in reliability monitor for info,,, click on any red X's in there and post back the info. hopefully its just a dodgy driver. to find all these just type in to search box in start menu.
good luck.

Hi. After upgrading BIOS to 2.12 the CPU frequency is locked to the lowest possible (disregarding BIOS settings). A:Bios upgrade to 2.12 on T460p locks cpu frequency to lowest when running without battery

It sounds like a bug might have been fixed.  I would expect it to slow down if you had just a battery (no A/C) or just A/C (no battery).  The charhing circuity won't "cook" the battery.  It will stop charging when it is fully charged.

Hi all,

As for my problem, title speaks for itself. Has anyone encounter this from the antivirus 2009 family? If so, how/did you get around it? Id like to get the computer in question fixed, as that nasty side effect filters internet search (like this site, for example). Although, that last symptom there is circumventable by using one of the many proxy sites around.

On that system, my progress is:

Managed to install malwarebytes anti-malware, although this was originally hampered by the problem im asking about!

Program when run locks up at 2200k mem usage. (spybot does the same thing)

Anyone have any ideas?

Ok got a problem that I think I knwo what is wrong, but I'm not sure. Looking for some confirmation on what I think. Or suggestions on what else if you disagree with my diagnosis.

Computer in question:
1 Ghz Duron
256 of some ddr ram
TNT 2 32 meg vid card

I get a call from this lady and she says her computer locks up while on the internet and then the screen goes blank. When she turns it off and back on nothing happens. If she tries it later it will turn on but when she's on the internet it happens again.
So thats the diagnosis she gave me.

Today after work I stopped by her house and used the computer for a bit. She is running WinXP Pro SP1. I checked her antivirus, it needed updating but the defs weren't real old. I then looked in the event viewer, it was clean, no warnings or anything, only the information messages.

So right now I'm thinking wtf? everything seems ok to me that would cause black screens. So I decide to fire up adaware (because I'm about to head out and thinking I might as well clean up the crap she's gotten from using IE while I'm here).

So while AdAware is dling its thing I decide to go to Windowsupdate.com and get some crap dling before I leave (she's on dialup). As those pages are loading up I decide to check her monitor connection just incase thats loose. As I reach back behind I touched her usb cable going to her printer.

One place to look for a shorting against the chassis, would be that thin metal plate that surrounds all the PS2/sound/USB/parallel etc. ports on the pack of the PC. This has some very small 'lips' that fit around each individual port. They could easily make a false contact.

Hey guys,
First off, great forum, I've learned alot from this place.

Now, I have a problem I cant seem to solve or find in the archives.

My computer will just randomly lock up after being on the internet. Sometimes it happens after a few minutes, somtimes after 20. It can be really frustrating because it's so random. There doesn't seem to be a method to what's happeneing. I'll go to load a page or something and my computer will just freeze and have the hourglass turning constantly. When I go down to the taskbar it will turn back into the arrow, but I can't click anything. And I can't Ctl-alt-delete to get to the task manager, so I just have to unplug the computer.

It seems to come and go. There's no parrellel I can see in the sites or what I'm doing, they're not heavy pages or intense flash/video or anything. Just checking email and googling stuff and it just happens.

I've ran a norton virus check multiple times and turned up nothing... and I'm lost. Please help!

Here's my tech specs, if they'll help:
- Windows xp
- multiple browsers (tried out with explorer, firefox, opera)
- pentium 4 2.52ghz, 1gb ram, 120gb hd

Went to the HP website got the updates(they said to install before sp2) now here i am. The comp now periodically locks up, twice when i was opening up a game and today when i was using mozilla. It never happened before but now i'm a little worried since this computer needs to be reliable. When it locks up the cursor moves but Alt+tabbing doesn't work and neither does ctrl+alt+del i have to manually shutdown the comp with the power button. Any suggestions would be appreciated. If you need more info just ask.

P.S. i also get an error whenever i start up about directcd causing windows to become unstable but windows keeps it from starting.

I just upgraded my mobo, ram, and processor.
AMD Athlon XP Barton 3200+ 2.1GHz
Asus (forgot the model)
Kingston 512MB RAM
120GB Maxtor
30GB Western Digital
ATI Radeon 9600 SE 128MB

My computer locks up every once in a while, so I downloaded Motherboard Monitor, it said my CPU was getting up to 140f so I bought a new heatsink and fan, now it runs at 90f idle, 100-105f in-game. Though my computer still locks up once in a while. So, I was installing Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault and as I was about to play it, it had to configure itself and it did and I went through it's settings seeing what I got and I clicked the SYSTEM tab in it's settings. It said my Video Card was a 256MB card.. could this be why my computer is locking up? The Asus board I have is said to have a auto-lockup/shutdown feature to protect the cpu and stuff from over-heating... so could this be why my computer is locking up? I went through the bios and the AGP Aperture Size was 128MB, I lowered it to 64MB and checked the MOHPA settings and it said my video card was a 192MB card.. should I lower it down to 32MB? (also is that the reason why my computer locked up, because my bios was overclocking my video card, then turned around and tried to protect itself)

A:Computer locks up..

Take a step backwards,

1.CPU and FAN are they correct match?
2. Memory are they the same type, brand and speed? If you have two 256?
3. Put the 30GB as the master primary
4. Put the 12GB as the master secodary

1. How many case fans do you have?
2. Where did you place this case near?

You should have air coming into the case and then air blowing out of the case. Two or more fans here even go has big as 92mm as 80mm isn't enough. But for the front fan 80mm is okay. Since you running hot you have to keep it cool. Download a free program called Speedfan, that's what I use to keep an eye on things.

MOBO Phase 3
1. Clean the CMOS
2. Don't Overclock anything
3. Make sure that any onboard Video is disabled since you have a ATI AGP Card
4. Same for audio and network if it's onboard and your using cards instead.

Again don't do any overclocking until you have a stable running system within 48 hours as we use to call it burn-in test.

When I start my computer everything starts as normal, then after 5 minutes or so it locks up. The unusual thing is that I can run in safe mode without issue until any program or I try to access one particular folder which happens to be a specific music folder. If I run McAfee, Malwarebytes or AVG the scan goes as normal until it gets to that folder and then locks up. I have tried deleting the folder, but as soon as it starts to delete the computer locks up. I can play music in itunes as long as I don't try and play the songs in that particular folder.
I have tried deleting the folder in DOS, but can't complete the delete. I can get to the directory and see the individual song files, but when I try to delete get the message cannot find file. Same thing if I try to delete the folder.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Every so often my computer will completely lock up, so that the only way I can get it back is to hold the power button in for 10 seconds and reboot. Sometimes this will happen several times a day, even almost within minutes of each other, and sometimes it will go days without happening at all. It is very aggravating. How do I go about troubleshooting this problem? I am using Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. This problem seems to happen more when I'm using Firefox with a lot of tabs open, or on websites that heavily use Flash. However, it also randomly happens at other times that don't seen to have any correlation with each other. Any thoughts or ideas are welcome as I am at a total loss on this one. The machine is custom built. I can post the specs, but this problem didn't show up until after the machine had been built and in use for at least a month.

A few weeks ago, I was having problems with lsass.exe errors locking up my computer. I thought I had solved the problem, but a few days later it started happening again. Also now my computer just seems to lock up at random times (even without the lsass.ese error message). I don't know if this matters, but I have seen that a sysfader application runs on my computer sometimes as well as a mshta.exe application. These may be OK applications, but maybe not. Any help would be appreciated.

I am looking for a little advice on a Dell Studio 1440 that will start up normally then proceed to slow way down, free up, then eventually lock up for good.

I ran Malwarebytes, spybot S&D, SuperAnti-Spyware to remove whatever bugs it could find. (They did find some but did not fix the problem)

I pulled one stick of memory (2Gig) and left the other stick (1Gig) and that seemed to allow me to work for a longer period but eventually locked up.

Any thoughts as to what I should do next would be much appreciated.

Windows XP, SP3
Computer locks up in following situations:
1. Direct copy of CD to CD. Process runs for about 2 minutes, then freezes.
2. Running any virus scan. After about 5 minutes, PC freezes.
3. When running Norton Ghost 9 to backup hard drive, program will run for 5 - 10 minutes, then lock up.
Only way out of this is to manually shut down and restart the PC.

A:Computer locks up

Hi LeeandLinda and welcome to TSF

Computers can freeze up from either hardware or software issues.

First, reboot in the Safe Mode and see if the porblem is still there.
If that clears it up, then it is an application that is loading at boot time.
In that case, reboot in the normal mode and open Task Manager and see if any applications are increasingly using more cpu time. Also see if one is growing in memory usage size. Some will go up then back down, but if they continue to increase, it will lock up the computer. If you find an offending application, go to Start>Run and type in msconfig then push the enter key. At the msconfig screen, pick the startup tab and uncheck the offending application if it is there. Normally, unchecking all applications except your virus and malware programs is OK. You can always recheck any that you find you need.

Overheating can cause freezing as will a bad powersupply. Download and run SpeedFan and post the voltages and temperatures. You can get it at this link:

Hope this helps

Best regards,

My XP home computer will lock up for what appears to be NO apparent reason. I was suspecting my video card for certain reasons while I was gaming but then it would freeze while I was not gaming. So I decided to have a look at the event logs under system and found this at precisely the same time as my freeze and I was hoping someone would be able to help me resolve this issue or shed some light on what is going on. Not too mention I have several of these errors.

Just noticed that my video card has an update for it's drivers I am going to install those in the meantime

Thank you

A:Computer locks up

ok now that I have UNinstalled my old video card drivers and TRIED to download the new ones, I am getting an error while I try to install.

Error number 0X80040707 I even tried the older drivers I had saved and I get the same error with that. So it must be a computer issue now which I have NO clue. I did a google search and looked into the registry for what thye said should be there and what should be there is there so now I am STUMPED !

UPDATE: Ok I got past the error with something that sounds REALLY stupid but it worked as far as gettingpast that error, lol. All I did is this and I have NO idea why it works.

I Created the folder Desktop in c:\documents and settings\all users\. After you do that install and it should work. I know it sounds really dumb but it works. Good Luck.

I will use these new drivers and see if the freeze issue is still there

Going nuts here, computer locks up after awhile of running with a long beep sound. I have an AMD 1.3 with a Biostar M7VIG board running 512 DIMM for ram, SB live sound card, Nvidia G4 440 vid card. Here is what I have tried already.
* Took sound card out of system and removed it from showing up in devices, also made sure drivers where all current. I only have 1 sound card to try but it worked fine in my old system.
* Tried a different HD, loaded win98, prob was there, then formated and loaded win2000 prob still there.
*Tried different memory, prob still there
*tried a different video card, prob still there, running G4-440 and tried a G2 that was working in my older system, prob still there.
* I have also downloaded the most current patches for all the hardware (sound card, vid card, HD) with win2000 have the most recent SP.
I hope you can give me some other option or things to check on, before I go out and buy something I dont need. I am to the point now that I am thinkin of running it into a tech shop. Plz help

Right click desktop, left clik on personalize.
Click screen saver bottom right corner.
If there is a tick in the "On resume display login screen" remove it.

And another thought;

You can do start, run netplwiz and remove the tick from "Users must enter a username and password to use this computer"

I've noticed the other day while watching a DVD on my pc that my computer locked up (no blue screens or shutdowns) and the sound stuttered. I thought it was a fluke. Then it happened again. Everything locked up. I told my friend the problem, he said to clean my case and replace the CPU fan. Which I did. I brought it home and after a few hours the same lock up happened. How do I fix this problem????

Is this only when watching a DVD? Does it happen at any other time? Are there some more symptoms you can give?

My PC recently developed this annoying habit of locking up, especially when I leave it idle. I can't even move my cursor, and I have to hit the reset button to get it running again. I decided to reformat my PC, but I ran into yet another problem: it locks up when I try to copy my files to my external hard drive or flash drive, even if the file is only 700 mb. I have over 100 GB worth of data that I need to back up, and I can't get any of it done because of the lock-up problem.

Does anyone know of a good way to back-up large files or to get rid of the lock up problem?

Here's what I've done so far:

Tried system restore. It won't even open.

Tried Windows' backup utility. Again, it doesn't want to work.

Cleaned up my registry with ccleaner and eusing

I uninstalled all programs that I installed in the past week.

I tried copying my files in safe mode. Didn't work.

I reset the registry permissions to their defaults

Checked event viewer:
In the application event viewer, I'm getting a lot of errors relating to AVG7 (event 100),though I already uninstalled it, Application Error (event 1000), Application Hang (event 1002) and MsiInstaller (11334). In the system event viewer, I got SideBySide errors (events 59 and 32). I honestly don't know what these mean, and the only things I'm vaguely familiar with are events 59 and 32 which apparently have something to do with c++ runtime libraries.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Every time I seem to load up Call of Duty 2 or sometimes even CS:Source my computer locks up in game. I am still able to do "ALT+CTRL+DELETE" to bring up the menu where I can do Shut Down, Log Off, Task Manager, etc. but when I press Task Manager the computer completely freezes. Though, before I do ALT CTRL DELETE the background of my computer is still working, the game itself is just locked up. (I know this beacuse I have a logitech g15 keyboard and the clock and controls on the LCD screen still work, and they wouldnt work if the computer is frozen completely)
In A nutshell -> my game freezes every 10-15 seconds and it freezes for approximately the same amount of time. Then it resumes gameplay (sound loops as well) and repeats a lot.
Any suggestions?

Ok this issue has been persistent for some time and I haven't made much headway.  Several months ago I decided to reinstall Star wars empires at way.  I had it saved on the computer as a image.  I downloaded Damon tools to mount it with.  After doing that when playing the game the computer would lockup, then I noticed that the computer would lockup when browsing the internet or even sitting idle.  I uninstalled both the game and damon tools, I did a quick restore which didn't help and then did a window repair which didn't help.  Now it hasn't locked up when idle for some time but locks up after 10-15 minutes of playing hero's of the storm.  I have updated all drivers and ruled out a overheating issue.  I ran stress tests on memory cpu and gpu and was not able to recreate the issue.   Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure that you've done all these steps when uninstalling Daemon Tools. Please un-install the program, then use the following free tool to ensure that the troublesome sptd.sys driver is removed from your system (pick the 32 or 64 bit system depending on your system's configuration):  New link (15 Aug 2012):  http://www.duplexsecure.com/downloads (pick the appropriate version for your system and select "Un-install" when you run it).Alternate link:  http://www.disc-tools.com/download/sptdManual procedure here:  http://daemonpro-help.com/en/problems_and_solutions/registry_and_sptd_problems.htmlIf that doesn't help, then let the game lock up one more time. Then please do the following:- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog)- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")- right click on Administrative Events- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."- save the file as Admin.evtx- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).
