Turn off auto update in chrome

Q: Turn off auto update in chrome

How to turn off the update feature in google chrome

Preferred Solution: Turn off auto update in chrome

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Any advice on how i can get windows to tell me what important updates i need, WHILST having the option of when i can download and install them?

Many thanks for any help.

Hello, recently my computer showed a windows security alert in the right hand side of the task bar. It said that windows automatic update was turned off. I clicked onto the windows security center and it would not let me turn auto update on. A message will sometimes pop up that says something like: "Windows is unable to turn on automatic updates please go the the control panal, click on system and turn them on from there." This message does not appear every time. When I click control panel>Performance/Maintenance>system>auto update, I apply the change and hit OK but nothing happens after that. Automatic update remains off after trying what was suggested.

I have also been getting the same pop up about once every 5-10 minutes (sometimes more) that says "unable to connect to server" with the url:

Thanks for any help.

A:Running Admin but still unable to get auto update to turn on

Your first screenshot shows that you are attempting to open a file with an extension of crdownload

That file extension is usually associated with Google's Chrome browser. It is a temporary file extension given to a file during the download. Once the download completes, there are a few more things that might occur before the original file extension is assigned to the file.

One of those things is:
Security related Chrome extensions (apps) might need to complete their checking of the file.

Another thing is:
Antivirus apps (in this case, Kaspersky) might might need to scan the file.
I downloaded Kaspersky from here:
Download Kaspersky Anti-Virus - FileHippo.com
During install, it downloaded another 168MB of stuff.
After the install, it downloaded lots more files. Wow!

I downloaded Chrome 31.0.1650.63 from here:
Download Google Chrome 31.0.1650.63 - FileHippo.com

After restarting the Virtual Machine that I'm playing in, I used Chrome to download the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) from here: Download System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [November 2013] from Official Microsoft Download Center

Using Process Monitor, I did not see Kaspersky do anything with the file during or after the download. Perhaps I just missed Kaspersky's actions.

My temp file correctly renamed from
Windows6.1-KB947821-v31-x64.crdownload to
Windows6.1-KB947821-v31-x64.msu after the download completed.

I'm troubleshooting sound driver issues and have come across something peculiar. I tried shutting off the auto driver update for windows because I do not want the specific drivers that they are going to use. In the screenshot you can see that an installation occurs even with the setting turned off. My question is, are these some default generic type audio drivers such that they will not interfere with the soundcard drivers? Is this some background type driver that will be installed regardless?

You can click on the picture to enlarge it up to enlarge it up to 1680x1050.

hi,im running windows xp home edition with sp2. To turn off my pc,i usually click on start in the taskbar, then the options to stand-by,turn off or restart appear,I then click on turn off,and the pc does the rest,it turns the pc off and the monitor. Now when i go through the process of turning it off, i do everything as described above, but instead of shutting off,it just acts as if i did nothing,i am left staring at the desktop and can just continue to use it as normal. So i have come to the conclusion that some sort of virus or something (i am doing a virus sweep as i am writting) has turned off the auto shutdown function,What i'd really love to know is can anyone tell me how i can turn this feature back on,i also forgot to add, that u cannot log off either, the same thing happens,so i would be really greatful if anyone has any suggestions at all,Thanks for your time

I've been messing with the idea of switching to Google Chrome from Firefox. Lately, Firefox seems to constantly slow down videos on any website. Plus Chrome is just faster. One thing I don't like is Chrome doesn't auto-login to websites that I visit daily like forums. I also don't like that it saves my history (I know where I've been, I don't need anything clogging things up!). Is there anyway to have Chrome have me logged it as soon as I visit the site without having to go to the login screen, and not save my history. Firefox does that for me right now, and looks like this.

A:Google Chrome Auto-Login

Hmm? I visit these forums every day and Chrome has not asked me for a login. Open up Chrome's Tools -> Settings -> Under the Hood, then at the topmost section (Privacy) click "Content Settings...", there are some cookie options in there.

No toggle for history, you'll have to clear the history manually every time. There may be a browser extension for that, though - I don't use extensions so I don't know.

From Powerdesk Pro 5:
To control the drives that display in the drive bar: Go to OptionsąPreferences. Click the Drives tab.By default, all drives are checked. Uncheck the box next to the drive letter(s) you don?t want displayed. You can also use this to specify what categories of drives you want displayed. If you don?t want, say, removable drives to appear, uncheck that box.Drives that are not checked will not display in the drivebar or the tree list. This doesn?t delete the drive, or any files on it. To have the drive reappear in PowerDesk, just recheck the box.If you have a lot of network drives mapped on your system, or have really small partitions, the drivebar may cut off the last few drive letters. I just recently built a PVR computer(Personal Video Recorder) which records about 30 video files a week. (3 - 8 GB / piece)

It's all working fine, but I've run into a rather strange problem with Windows. I'm using XP Home (I could change this to Pro if needs be), and I've found that Windows automatically defragments the hard drives every once in a while which really kind of throws a wrench into the works. (It slows the hard drive access WAY down.) Since these video files are coming in over a period of two hours, the files usually end up pretty fragmented. So, I guessing Windows just decides to start defraging them. Do you know of any way to turn off this "feature"? I've only just begun to search the registry and haven't found a thing yet.

I created a backup of my hard drive files onto a CD. It contains very important data. Yet when I put the CD into my CD drive, I can hear it spinning and trying to be read, but I get a window that says something like "Searching for Auto Play" or "Seeking/starting Auto Play", then it just hangs there forever and freezes the rest of my computer - until I take out the CD. It's obviously trying to seek an autorun file, but as far as I know, none of my data files on that CD include any autorun files! Why would it do this? Is there a way to turn off the autorun feature?

I often drag from the right pane to the left pane in Windows Explorer. In each case I ALWAYS expand the left pane first so that I can see the folder I want to drag into.
However, if that folder already has subfolders it often expands and I have no idea where the drag will end up. Is it possible to turn off this autoexpanding function?

A:How to turn off auto expanding

You are correct that folders will open in the left pane. But the target folder will always be highlighted.

In fact, you can move the highlight up and down the entire C\: drive all day, opening every folder, until you finally release the left mouse button in the highlighted folder

BTW1: Of course, someone in the A-team might know how to turn off the folder action.

BTW2: I never use drag and drop in Windows Explorer. I use Ctrl+X in the source right pane, then Ctrl+V in the target right pane.

Reason: Because several times I've dropped into the incorrect folder. Either because the folder name was *similar* to the correct folder name. Or *identical* to the correct folder name, but in the wrong branch

By opening the target right pane, I can see what files and dates already exist (if any).

I have a machine on my network on which I can't turn off auto updates even when logged in as either the local or global administrator. The options to turn it off are just greyed out. Its not the only restriction on that machine. When I try to view hidden files and folders through My Computer, Each time I click OK, the option reverts back to not showing hidden files and folders.

Anyone seen this before? I need to switch off auto updates so IE9 doesn't install on the PC as its not compatible with an external essential service that the user users.

A:Can't turn off auto updates

The method described there is the only one I have experience with.

I would suggest you backup files as deemed necessary beforehand.

As a comment, either someone has played around with that comps' settings OR it has malware. In the latter case, it might be smarter to just copy off, wipe, reinstall and copy back (after thorough scans of the copied files).

On XP I used to be able to place my files where ever I wanted  in explorer. On Windows 7 to my dismay I can't move files ore folder where I want them. Is there a way to turn this off? When tranferring a bunch of files to removable storage there may be files that I may not want to transfer and I can't simply move them out of the way like used to on XP.

Hello awlmyne,
Open Windows Defender by clicking the Start button , clicking All Programs and then clicking Windows Defender.
Click Tools, and then click Options.
Under Administrator options, select the Use Windows Defender check box, and then click Save. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
This should then enable you to see in Windows Security Centre - Malware Protection -
"Windows Defender is turned on."

[When Windows Defender is on, you will be alerted when spyware and other potentially unwanted software tries to install itself, run on your computer, or change important Windows settings. If you use the default settings, Windows Defender will also check for new definitions, regularly scan for spyware and other potentially unwanted software, and automatically remove any detected item that has a recommended removal action.]
Hope that helps.

In windows seven there is an tab called Communications that will auto turn down the volume by YZ% when you wan it to. Before I rewrote my Windows 7 system it turn down the music when I had an incoming call via Skype. Now after reinstalling my Windows 7 system even with the setting set correctly and label in the Playback and Recording listing as default communication device it still don't work not work anymore with Skype. All the posting that I come across are trying turn the feature off so it don't work. I can't find one with similar problems then me of it not working. Everything I can think of don't work so I thought I post up the issues here to see if anybody has a thoughts on how to get it to work again.

Any ideas?

A:Sound Don't Auto Turn Down?

Try setting the audio input device that you use with Skype as your default communications device in the recording sound control panel.

Hey tech guys

Just re-installed my OS and all browsers,
When I start to login to my Gmail account in chrome, it displays an email for a colleague that we used to work together at the same office many years ago, actually he was the former officer using the same desktop that I started to use when I joined the organization, so usually I do sync all my data and bookmarks,
but, his login Gmail often pops up at the first option when I attempt to login my Gmail,
I deleted all cookies, but still coming,,
please help how to delete it permanently and what should do to never let it appears again in my email login tab.
thanks in advance!

A week or two ago, I began having a problem where Google Chrome would periodically change settings (without me doing anything) to use a proxy server, and so nothing would connect until I went into the settings and unchecked it. Because of this, I ran an MBAM scan and found a number of things, which I deleted, removed from the registry, etc. Also, until I did this, MBAM would repeatedly report that it had blocked an attempted connection by Chrome to a "suspicious website."

After this, the problem appeared to be fixed -- no suspicious tasks running, no connections to suspicious websites reported by MBAM, etc. However, yesterday some charges appeared on my iTunes account (to which I've since changed the password of course). It's possible, of course, that somebody got the password before I had removed the malware and simply only used it now, but I was hoping someone would be able to help me run through a system check using the more powerful malware scanners/removers, just to make sure there's nothing bad lying around.

A:Auto-change in Google Chrome proxy

Best proceedure now is to get a deeper look. Please go here....Preparation Guide ,do steps 6-9.Create a DDS log and post it in the new topic explained in step 9 which is here Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs and not in this topic, thanks. If GMER won't run skip it and move on.Let me know if that went well.

I think i'm not that good with using computers, so can anyone show me how i can disable that auto install step by step please? Thanks =).

A:How do i disable the auto install feature on chrome?

Perhaps you mean "Google Updater". That is the program that automatically updates all Google programs.
You can uninstall it using the Add/Remove program in the Control Panel.

If that is not what you are asking help for, post back.

I currently use a computer that I bought off a former coworker of mine. It's a good system; he was using it with Server 2008 for a home business he was operating at the time. Naturally, having no need for Server 2008 it was the first thing to go. I messed around with Win7, then a distro or two of Linux, before eventually reinstalling Win 7 and going on my merry way. In fact, I've done a repair install of Windows since making that final decision.

The thing is...his personal info still shows up in Chrome and FireFox's autofill. That is, when I double click a website's name/address field, one of the options will be his name, his address or his phone number. Since getting it, we haven't had any contact at all, so I know full well he's not touched it to fill anything out. Really, he didn't even have anything other than IE on it when I bought it off him. Browsers have been installed, borked up, uninstalled and reinstalled (as has the OS) a couple times. Still, it'll show. What's weird is it isn't always 100% of the time - some sites will have him as an option, but not others.

This doesn't have any real impact on how the PC operates, but it is about 200% weird and I'd like to know if anyone has any ideas how the heck something like this happens. I mean, that data can't just coincidentally have survived a few OS transitions...could it?

A:Spooky FF/Chrome Auto-Fill Options

Was Firefox ever completely uninstalled at any point since you acquired the computer? If not, the former owner's profile might have remained intact. I'm far less experienced with the Chrome browser, but it seems possible old data files might have survived the various OS transitions.
