American Keyboard in the UK

Q: American Keyboard in the UK

Hi there,

I live in the UK, and I'm currently on holiday in the US. Everything is so much much cheaper over here, so I wanted to buy some stuff.

I have seen a good deal on a wireless keyboard and mouse. Will this work on my computer at home?
I realise some of the keys will be different, as American keyboards have a different lay-out..... but will it actually work with my UK PC?
Also will PC games and software I buy over here work on my UK PC?
What about USB memory sticks and such?

thanks.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Folks!! I know a lot of people have had problems with the backslash key in the American Keyboard.

The best way to get around this problem is:

Hold Alt GR key and then the \ key on top of the enter key.

For the | key press Alt GR key + Shift and then the | key above the enter.

Hope this helps!

This means that the hard drive is about to fail. S.M.A.R.T is a utility that monitors the health of the hard drive and reports any potential problems, like an early warning system. When it says "S.M.A.R.T Status Bad" This is not a good thing. Does it give you an option to bypass and get to Windows? If so backup your important data.

Don't know if I am in the right spot but as the price of 7 is so expensive out here someone suggested that the US prices are at least half what we have to pay so does anyone know of some US outlets where I can get copies cheaper.

I have Googled to find some and gone down the OEM track only to be lost in interminable legal paper trails and am still not sure of what I can legally do with an OEM.

For those who are wondering I tidy up machines usually cleaning out the dust, replacing the thermal paste, replacing hard drives, CPU's, and RAM for friends and putting on 7 as the best alternative to what they have got. But as I see it an OEM cannot be used for that purpose.

Is it possible for me to buy the machine from them do it up and then resell it to them for just the cost of the parts??

cant you install 7 for them ,then have them purchase a license from microsoft direct to activate it. i believe you get 30 days to activate a 7 install .

The cd is in great condiction so should I cleen my laptop disk place and then if that, how?

A:Distored i'm an american cd

Mmm - could do with a bit more explanation here. Do you mean the sound is "distorted" and not "distored" (no such word)?
if you meant to type "distorted", try cleaning the CD with purpose-made CD cleaner.
You can also buy a special CD that will clean the CD drive. Most good audio centres or computer stores will have them.
They have little bristles attached to them which are designed to clean dirt from the laser lens, but don't get carried away - only use it a couple of times a year as over-use can do more harm than good.

If other CDs play okay and only that one is distorted, then despite what you say it must be a bad CD.

My Wife is a 'die hard' American Idol fan - she will not miss a single show. When she is unable to watch one, she records it on the DVR and watches it the next evening. However...... she didn't set the DVR correctly this past Sunday ( !/22/12 ) and recorded the football game instead - now that made her 'double po'd' - LOL!!!!

So I've been trying to find a way to get a copy of that single episode. I started searching with the Idol site, then anything else I could think of, but to no avail. I just need to find a legal download, or purchase a DVD of that episode. Any ideas?

Thanks, Keith

I have a Gateway system running XP Pro SP3. I received an email purportedly from americangreetings.com. It said to open the attachment to see the greeting card. The attachment was a zip file name e-card.zip. I looked inside the zip file and stupidly managed to accidentally run the exe (named e-card.exe) which it contained.

I immediately started getting a bunch of error messages. I don't recall them precisely, it happened to fast. There were a number of "cancel, retry, continue messages" all of which I canceled. There also messages saying something about "no disk" or "no drive". Then I noticed that the "Norton Internet Security" icon had vanished from the tray. I tried to restart the computer at this point but it was taking forever so I eventually turned off the power. When I turned it back on it rebooted and everything seemed fine except that Norton had not started. I tried to start it manually and it wouldn't start.

I used the Norton removal tool, then downloaded and installed the latest version of "Norton Internet Security". It now starts at boot and everything seems fine, but I suspect that I'm still infected. Something certainly happened that shouldn't have and I don't want to just proceed as if everthing is okay. I'm posting a copy of my hijack this log. I also have a Mcafee Root Detective report which I can post if you think it would be useful. Thank you for your help.

A:American Greetings virus?

Norton has detected and claims to have resolved the [email protected] virus. It's described here: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2009-022520-1425-99&tabid=2

It describes more or less exactly what I've seen. That page lists a bunch of files which get deposited in various shared directories. I found those files in those directories on my machine, when I right click on one it vanishes, presumably it's deleted by Norton.

So it appears that things are under control, but I'm still concerned there may be other things that haven't been resolved.

Hi
I have just purchased an american board an abit av-20 once I changed the frequency of the front bus it lit up and all is fine.
The question being is the jumper system that prevents accidental bios flashing a gaurd against bios hacking. as this has happened to me twice in the past two months.
I bought the board from the local store so when they hack this bios I can just walk in and get a replacement. but to tell the truth it would be great if it did not happen but the walk to the local store is great exercise.
the hacked boards were an asus a7v8x-x and a gigagyte ga-7 dxr+
would the abit be efficient in this department or would that be beyond its capabilities.
any advice would be appreciated

Hi,

I would like to use my American Playstation 2 in England. I have been told I need a stepdown converter to convert the 220 or 240V in Europe to the 110V the American appliance needs.
But I do not know how many Watts the American appliance uses. There are converters that will work with appliances from 45W to like 1,000W. Any idea which one I would need?

I read somewhere online that I might need to get something up to 5 times more powerful than I need because some things (like TVs) have a surge of power when they are switched on. Does this apply to a Playstation too?

Apart from the stepdown converter, would I need anything else? Please email me at [email protected] with your replies.

thank you for your help.

Kind regards,

Hello, I upgraded from windows 7 to windows 8 and ever since then I get a screen at reboot or start up that's a American Megatrends screen and its saying my HDD is bad and I need to backup and replace. I go into my HDD C: and do a "Check drive for for system errors" and it say its fine. Now, let me start from the beginning.....

When I first upgraded it installed fine ect and after the install of updates it rebooted and this is when i get the first glims of the American Megatrends screen. My PC was running so slow and freezing ect and finally I got the blue screen and that's all it would do every time I tried to restart it and I didn't get a chance to backup anything what so ever. I called MS and they wanted me to DL the copy again onto the PC I was using and burn the ISO image to a DVD and boot from it. I did what they said but here is the kicker...

The PC I was on was a 64-bit PC and I thought the other PC was a 32-bit and with the new Windows 8 it auto decides for you . so what i did was downloaded the copy for the 64-bit on that PC (Just for kicks) and I had a desktop PC at the house as well and I know its a 32-bit so I DL a copy using that machine for the copy I was going to use to re install or try to fix the PC with. It allowed me to boot from DVD and I re installed the Win8 32-bit copy and it installed but I still get the American Megatrends screen saying I got a bad HD hit F1 to go on.

can u pls clear it up if i can play it or not.

also, can it played on computers dvd rw?

tnx.

A:Can i play a dvd from japan on american dvd player?

It is unlikely that your home dvd player can play it. Your computer's drive should be able to play it, but the region will have to be changed. Whatever software you are using to playback the dvd should notice this and allow you to change it, the catch is you are only allowed to change the region on your drive 5 times. You will use 2 of those times if you go from Region 1 to whatever region Japan is and then back to Region 1 next time you want to watch a DVD from the US.

If you must watch it on tv rather than a computer, then you can use something like DVDShrink or DVD Decrypter (you'll have to find those on your own, since its legality is questionable) which can strip out the region coding, and you burn the region free version you made to a DVDR.

If the thought of limited region changes bothers you, you may be able to find a region free firmware for your DVD-RW drive, but again you are on your own for finding that.

For the past few weeks, I've been seeing the AMI screen everytime I turn on my computer. It wasn't like that before, so I have no clue why it's showing up now. I pressed f1 and f2 numerous times and went through every session, still I cannot find the problem of why it keeps appearing during startup.

Since I just received a new computer this April, I'm not very familiar with the new AMI then I was with Windows XP. Instead, I used screen-shot to show my AMI screen. I hope this will help!

A couple of hours ago my computer was at its desktop. I walked away and when I came back, there was a message window that said something along the lines of "there's a problem with your hardware, please restart your machine...". I restarted and then got the following window while rebooting:

Pressing F12 or F1 did nothing. I CTRL+ALT+DEL and repeatedly tapped the F12 key and that did nothing but took me back to the above window. I CTRL+ALT+DEL again and repeatedly tapped the F2 key which took me into the BIOS. I poked around and found nothing out of the ordinary and ESC without saving. This allowed me to go and login to windows. I went to the Dell website (I have a Dell PC) and ran a quick diagnostic through their website since I couldn't do it at reboot. The diagnostic came back fine except for FAIL for the SMART THRESHOLDS and then suggested that I replace my 250gb hard drive. The problem here is that I don't have a 250gb HD, I have a 1.5tb HD of a different model.

I called Dell and the tech told me that they've been receiving a number of calls regarding the same thing and that it's a virus. According to him, it's one of those viruses that even Norton can't find (I have the full Norton suite.) He wanted to tap into my computer to remove it. Since my PC is no longer under warranty, he said Dell would charge about $130 to remove it or I would have to reformat the hard drive to get rid of it. Little does he know that I'm a ma... Read more

A:American Megatrend Virus/Malware?

I doubt it's a virus I suspect the Dell tech didn't know what he was talking about or you mistakenly called one of those fake/spoof services that just wants your money. And no, reformatting the hard drive will do nothing to clear to clear a SMART error. SMART is performed internally by the hard drive and once it's tripped it can't be reset.

You don't need to replace the hard drive with another 250GB drive, any size drive under 2TB should work.

Need to know will the HP 110-220z American Megatrends BIOS support booting from an Ubuntu Live DVD ISO  on a usb thumb drive with a boot sector I need to fix a Ubuntu 16.04 load sectors corruption problem.  the cd/dvd drive has diedbeen through all the disable security and finally got the USB thumb drive listed in the memory list.  The version of the BIOS is 2.15.126 I have not been able to find any specs on what it can and cannot do. Now I have lost Ubuntu Grub loader and the machine starts loading win7 each time. It has not been used for over 2 years and Microsoft will demand two days of updates be loaded before I can access any drive from it. I need the live CD Ubuntu to load from the thumb drive so I can fix grub and use utilities to fix the inability to read certian sectors. [Have run HP diagnostics on the Hard disk, no problems found.]

The support page for that model indicates it came with Windows 8.1, which means it should also have UEFI BIOS.  Depending on the way the Ubuntu Live was added to the flash drive, it might not be done correctly.  See this page on Ubuntu and UEFI BIOS.  BTW: it needs to be a 64bit installhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI

I don't know why but yesterday, after restarting my computer it beeped once then went to the AMI screen. Plus my computer has become very slow it might have something to do with it. I am asked to press f1 or f2 and if I press f1 I go to this configuration screen and I don't know what to do. But I do see that the word BIOS is written everywhere on the screen. It dose that every time I turn it on. I haven't had any big problems except my computer is running kinda slow. How do I get rid of the message?

"Before you drop in on the American Express website to see how much damage you did to your credit line with holiday shopping, you should know it's vulnerable to an XSS (cross-site scripting) exploit. As The Register reports, this news comes after a bungled attempt to fix the problem. As El Reg puts it,
The cross-site scripting (XSS) error that makes it trivial for attackers to steal americanexpress.com user's authentication cookies is alive and kicking. The confusion stems from a mistake made by many application developers who incorrectly assume that the root cause of a vulnerability is closed as soon as a particular exploit no longer works. So far, only proof-of-concept exploits have been written to show how easy it would be to pilfer login credentials, but until AmEx really eradicates this problem, keep a careful eye on your website transactions. For a list of precautions you can take to stop XSS exploits, see our 2007 article."

Hi, I have found a monitor I would like for my PC, but I would have to get it delivered from America. My question is, would I have any problems plugging it into a UK socket, using a UK power lead?

The monitor is a HP 2710m

A:American monitor and UK power sockets

Probably, but not certainly, it will work.

Some monitors use power supplies that tolerate any voltage and frequency, others don't. Last June I was in Singapore at a trade show (coming from the US) and when we set up our booth, we were able to plug our monitors into the Singapore power grid with only a plug converter. However, one of the guys insisted that "all modern power supplies tolerate all voltages" and promptly blew the power supply on a router and the supply on a webcam by just plugging them in.

The documentation on the monitor will tell you (someplace) whether or not you can do that. Study it carefully.

Siemens/Fujitsu PC with Win xp SP3

The American Megatrends screen has recently appeared at boot up but boots past so quickly I cannot get to read it. I think I glimpsed something like "BIOS not configured properly" at bottom of screen but am not really sure. How do I pause the boot in order to read the AMI screen? Pause/break button does not do it.

Any help appreciated

e6700 3.2 GHZ.
4GB Patriot extreme ram (4 x 1GB) @ 800MHz and 4 - 4 - 4 - 12 T2 (T1 causes BSOD ).
XFX 8800 GTS
Asus P5N32 SLI SE Deluxe w/ ver 5## BIOS (Possibly a custom one from the OEM).

My computer is working fine, excpet for one minor detail...

My Asus P5N32 SLI SE Deluxe doesn't like my new 4GB of 800MHz ram. The ram is fine. XP 32 bit runs fine with only 2-3 GB in use, but Vista Ultimate 64-Bit is terrible, running at least 5 times slower and maxing out the processor and freezing a couple of minutes just to open Fire Fox. I am considering buying a new mobo, but I heard there is another way.

Some people have gone into their BIOS and enabled an option called "Memory Remapping," which fixed the problem. The catch is: My BIOS doesn't have that option for some odd reason... Surprise, surprise after my cellphone provider had to send 2 SIM cards to me for the phone to work and my External Backup HD had failed just a couple of months after I bought it(Goodbye 100+ Gigabytes of data).

I checked the manual that went with my mobo, and the bios version in the manual and on my computer were EXACTLY the same! Though, the menu in the Manual had many more options than did the one on my computer. So, I go to Asus's website and download the latest official (not beta) driver. Then, I pop in the Asus CD that came with my mobo and tried to run "Asus Update". Every time I run this I get an error message: "Unable to create NT driver... Read more

Argh, not even a boot cd did the trick! The DOS files loaded onto the cd and the cd ran just like a floppy disk, but the BIOS files were nowhere to be found! WTF, did I use nero wrong?

Ok, so before you reply, please make note that I didn't build this pc myself, it was custom built in a company by order. I don't know a thing about inside of computer. Of course, I know the main parts, but repairing or tinkering, nooo.

Pc specs:
Intel i5-2400 3.1 Ghz Quad Core
8 GB of RAM
Nvidia GeForce 550ti Graphics Card.

The thing is, in my opinion, this pc is properly cooled and built, because I've been having it for almost a year and I've never had this problem before.

So okay, I got back home and turned on my pc. And I noticed a problem. My video was slow. Videos on youtube were slow and choppy, I tried like moving windows and their movement was slow. At first I thought its a video card or monitor problem and I tried rebooting my pc. When I pressed restart, before booting windows, the computer shows the window:
American Megatrends

(Computer info)

CPU over temperature error!
Press F1 to continue setup.
Is it really overheated? Because I've never had this problem before, I didn't had it the other day I was using it and I'm using it a lot. What to do? I really can't just open up the case and see the problem, I'm not that experienced.

A:American Megatrends - CPU Over Temperature ERROR

Why can't it be overheating? Things do break, or come loose, and they can get dirty too.

Download HW Monitor and see what the CPU/Core temps are, for that matter check all the temps. Best would be to post a screen shot of HW Monitor.

HW Monitor: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

If the computer is truly overheating then it will need to be opened up to see why.

American Business Corporation (ABC) announces IDO Program through ABC
Employment

In August of 2005 American Business Corporation announced an
Independent Division Owner program for it's employment Division ABC
Employment. The program allows independent owners to license exclusive
rights to a territory. American Business Corporation is limiting the
program to 600 owners nationwide.

"This is one of the most exciting programs we have ever launched"
said
President Jon Allen, a decorated United States Military Veteran. "We
are sharing an incredible program with independent owners. I would
like to make 600 millionaires, but I don't know how likely that is"
added Allen.

The ABC Employment program is set to launch in the United States in mid
September with an international rollout slated for 2006.
