I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have a Samsung 840 120Gb - I have secured erased it before.. I loaded windows from my HDD so I could do it from windows, when I opened Samsung Magician (stupid name for useless program) it said there were a firmware update so I updated it, rebooted etc - now I went to secure erase as I want too completely reinstall windows due to issues and I can not as it says "drive is in a frozen state" - ive done it before from this HDD so it seems the update has screwed it or changed it...the drive works, but i cant secure erase it?

heres what ive tried:

1) unpluggin the Sata cable (as per its instructions) = no joy.

2) unpluggin the Sata cable, turning on, loading windows THEN pluggin it in = nothing happens, no drive appears, there appears to be no "hot swap" options in the BIOS of my Gigabyte H77M-D3H motherboard.

3) killing power to the PC and rebooting = no joy.

4) created a USB version to run at boot = mixed results, it said the same thing "drive is frozen - unplug sata cable for 2 seconds then plug back in" and run it by typing seguio.exe - so I did that but typing the instruction done nothing, so I reboot and this time it went further to erase it but it stopped saying FATAL ERROR!! - so I reboot and tried again and it said the drive was frozen again!!

this has to be the stupidest thing ive experienced, I can not "UNFREEZE" the drive following samsungs instructions, ive read that freezing the drive is done by the OS at boot, so how i... Read more

On an Intel SSD, it's done through the Intel Toolbox.

Or look here:

A:Secure Erase Program Q's

Why are you try to be sure that the data is erased?
If you are getting rid of the machine then there is a need, but if just rebuilding the system, there is NO need.
Normally a clean install of the OS will wipe that data, this includes the option of doing a Factory Restore.

hi -
anyone familiar with HDDerase/ secure erase?

i downloaded it but it seems to only go up as high as windows 98.

does that mean i have to have windows 98 on my computer and can't have windows 7?

tried to run it - it listed 4 options to choose from, none of which made any sense, ran it 2x but it did not work.

i heard that this is one of the only erase tools that gets to the HPA area and hidden/ bad sector areas, whereas dban is great but does not touch those areas, at least the HPA and possibly the DCO.

simply, if anyone knows where i can find a download that will work with windows 7 that would be great.

thanks.

A:HDDerase/ secure erase

Just briefly googling on HPA and DCO, it doesn't appear that Windows can touch those places. And the BIOS uses the HPA. I wouldn't want to wipe those areas. And normal Wnidows user data is not stored in those places, and the chief concern about wiping data off drives is to ensure that user data is erased.

So, after reading a ton about SSD drives and finally getting one (Intel X25-M G2), I played around with it for a while today and figured that I would just do a secure erase to get it back to factory defaults before really getting it setup on my machine.

Turns out the Secure Erase app (3.3 or 4.0) won't work as the BIOS of my machine sends a "freeze lock" command thus these tools cannot touch the drive.

I've tried the Linux bootable CD with hdparm tool as well and it to shows that the device is locked...thus it cannot proceed.

I've tried the Secure Erase tool from several machines and all result in same thing. Secure Erase gets to welcome screen where it would display the attached hard drives and that is as far as it goes.

So, anybody got any suggestions. According to people who make Secure Erase, a least desirable workaround is to boot the machine with no power attached to the drive and then connect power while the machine is running. Well, obviously with a brand new hard drive, I don't want to do that.

A:Cannot Secure Erase an SSD drive

Nevermind. I found a computer at my house where this functionality works as it should. I was able to successfully secure erase my drive on my Intel X25-M G2 drive.

A:SSD OCZ Vertex 2 / Secure Erase

Hi,

No, there is no need to do a secure erase - simple choose the format option when you do a fresh install of Windows.

To maximise the life of your SSD, you should avoid a regular secure erase - there is no need for it at all. It holds no benefit for any installation, and just shortens the life span of the SSD.

Hi there

sometimes you want to REALLY erase a HDD -- this FREE method will write X'00' - Hex zeros - on every writeable are on your disk -- destroying / removing previous data -- while this isn't of military strength or "CIA" proof it's certainly good enough for normal home purposes. A normal delete doesn't actually delete DATA until that space is reclaimed and overwritten, it merely deletes the file entry from the directory so unscrupulous people could access some of your data.

If a Disk has been contaminated with a Virus this is also a good way to ensure it's GONE too !!. I always do this procedure if I'm giving away an old computer of I acquire some used HDD's == you never know what might be on them.

I also do this if I'm installing / re-installing Windows from scratch -so I'm 100% sure that the Windows disk is clean -- nothing lurking in the MBP / partition table areas of the disk.

You need access to a Linux system either as a Host or even as a VM - works fine -- or even simply boot up one of the LIVE distros available anywhere so you don't even need to install anything and boot from a USB.

now simply use this simple command :

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=4k conv=notrunc

if is the INPUT file I- in this case simply a Null / hex 00
of is your output disk in this case /dev/sda. you can use the command df which will list your disks (or even FDISK -l similar to the Windows command),

To check just type
dd if=/dev/sda | hexdump -C | grep [^00]

Hi there, I switched to an Intel X18-M SSD on my X301 some time ago. I noticed that the new BIOS was released with Secure Erase functionality some time ago. As I was going to rebuild my laptop today, I thought I would give it a go. Turns out that this was a mistake. The utility failed on the Intel SSD necessitating a reboot after running for six hours. After the reboot, it turns out that the utility has set a hard drive password on the disk (there was not one before). As I have no way to know what password it has set, I am effectively locked out of my drive and it's a brick to all intents and purposes.Does anyone (Lenovo in particular) know what password is set during the running of the Secure Erase functionality of the latest BIOS? My only alternative is to find out if there is a default master password from Intel. Since in principle, this should be blank, I believe that I am scuppered unless someone in Lenovo can tell me what password they set using the utility. Thanks in advance.

Hello all,
One way to fully erase an SSD is to erase and repartition the drive, then fill the new partition, forcing the drive to overwrite the blocks. But I know there is a simple low-level command to tell most SSDs to erase all blocks. How can I do this? The SSD in question is a Samsung PM851 from a Latitude E7250. Is there a BIOS command I can run on the laptop? I currently have the mSATA drive removed from the laptop and it's in an external case, but I can reinstall it into the laptop if a BIOS command is needed. Samsung won't support the drive as it's only sold to OEMs.
I have seen that the program "Parted Magic" claims to be able to do this - but I shouldn't need to purchase something to erase a drive like this. What is the command I need to send to the drive? How do I do it using Dell supported methods? It should be a quick and easy thing to do.
Thanks

I've never done a secure erase, but you don't need a secure erase to wipe a drive.

You can delete and make partitions as you see fit as part of the install, during the install.

Windows formats partitions as needed to complete the installation. I don't think you specifically ever have to ask it to format anything.

Dear Community .
I am planning to sell and upgrade my Alienware to a newer model .
I want to perform a secure erase .
I have tried Samsung magician 4.9 ( 5.0 doesn't support the SSD)
I have tried parted magic .
I am able to create the boot USB for both tools but on each occasion I get " Drive Frozen state " message .
I have researched for hours and all I see is cycle the power on the disc by unplugging the power and replacing it .
My questions are: 1a how do I power cycle on a Samsung SSD PM851 M.2  2280 as I don't see any power cable/lead  1b is there another way to unfreeze/unlock the drive . I DO NOT want to pull the whole module out and push it back in and end up with a dead piece of electronics .
2 Is there another way for me to secure erase and do I need to do this at all ,  would a format and clean installation of windows ( halting at the country /language stage and powering down for the new buyer ) be secure enough ?
To be honest I have fallen behind on HDD technology and couldn't believe the SSD was only a PCB  with 4 chips . when I opened the cover I was expecting to see a 2.5 drive .

Thanks

My friend is having some problems with opening her yahoo mail box, so I suggested she check,
add-ons, to see if there is a possible browser problem.

When doing so and going to the add-ons page, from tools in Fire Fox, she gets a message, . . "Secure Connection Failed"

Her FireFox Is version 3.6.21

You can tell Firefox to bypass these certificate warnings. You should only bypass the warning if you're sure that the site is legitimate. Legitimate public sites will not ask you to do this. An invalid certificate can be an indication of a web page that will defraud you or steal your identity.

1. On the warning page, click Or you can add an exception....
2. Click Add Exception.... The Add Security Exception dialog will appear.
3. Click Get Certificate.
4. Read the text describing the problems with this site.
5. Click Confirm Security Exception if you want to trust the site.
Should I advise her to do this ?

This is happening across multiple browsers on multiple computers regardless of the website.  I can log into Facebook, but not get to any of the content.  I can get to my bank's page, but not log into the site.  Sometimes I can "send error report", other times I cannot.

I have done troubleshooting such as clearing the cache (everything, including saved passwords) and rebooting the systems.  It happens in Explorer, Firefox, Dragon, Chrome.  If one computer won't connect, the others won't connect.  If one browser won't load the site, the others won't load the site.

I'm tempted to restore my one laptop to see if that solves the problem.  If it does, it is not a viable solution as the disc for my pc was lost in the move between states.

Any help?

Thanks.

I hope someone can help me. For the last few days, when I first put on the computer and using my RoboForm password software to login to my Google mail I get a 'Secure Connection Failed' notice appear. I keep closing out of it and it keeps reappearing. After about 12 goes it disappears. Then using my RoboForm I login to eBay and have exactly the same notice, keep closing out of it and reappearing until after only 3 or 4 attempts it finally disappears. Usually any site I visit after the first 2 sites is alright and I don't get this notice.

The notice says: Secure Connection Failed www.trustplus.com:443 uses an invalid security certificate.(error code: sec error expired certificate)
This could be a problem with the server's configuration or it could be someone trying to impersonate the server. If you have connected to this server successfully in the past the error may be temporary and you may try again later.

Generally the sites in question are Gmail and eBay.

My tech guy said he thought it was a RoboForm issue. RoboForm have told me it isn't. I am using XP and Firefox browser. Has anyone got an idea what this is and how I can get rid of it.
Thanks.

A couple of days ago, my laptop (Vista) started showing "secure connection failed" messages for the login pages to websites like banks, Yahoo, Facebook etc. Might someone have any insight into this problem and how serious it might be? Hopefully this image of a screen shot will appear it's my first time trying. If it appears, Scarlett gets the credit for the great instructions she posted for posting images.TIA

Hello all.

I have a VPN question?

What does the error msg. "Failed to establish a secure connection" implies or means?

The above message is being received after entering username and password for authenication when attempting to connect via VPN.

I'm using Nortel Networks VPN Client.

I had used Cisco VPN as well, and have received the same above message.

Seeking an explanation and/or answer.

Jboman.

A:VPN - Failed to establish a secure connection

It means that something went wrong. It is a very generic error message and pretty useless. You should try to get some more detailed log information from your client or the server.
