I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Prabin Karki, welcome to the windows 7 forum,

I would not recommend duplicating your problem in more than one topic.

It will most likely get you ignored.

You might want to read up on IIS which is internet information server included with advanced versions of windows.

Imagine my surprise when instead of the expected security update, Thunderbird launched a whole new interface, version 68, which cannot find my local email nor log into the server. I get an authentication failure on the server password; and I have no idea why this new version of tbird can't locate my saved messages, though it does recognize my account settings. Any idea what I can do to restore usability? Losing years of stored messages is not what I need right now!

Hello,

I have a synology diskmanager linux server that I access with my local computers on my home network. My dell optiplex 960 desktop runs windows xp pro, and I was experiencing a 10-15 second stall when I click on the diskstation in my network places, under workgroup. I went through with Dell and they suggested a repartitioning, reformatting and reinstallation of windows xp, which I've done. Unfortunately this did not change the response time. When I called back the support person (bear in mind this is their 'gold' service contract) said it was outside of the scope of services...

So I was hoping that someone could help. Another problem was one of my shared folders on the diskstation could not be viewed from the xp computer. So I created a new folder and copied over these files and it's fine now.

I run Malware (full version), MS Security essentials and firewall.

Thanks,

James

Abruptly internet access disappeared. It's a router issue, none of the computers here can connect. Further, I can't access the router through a browser - 192.168.0.1 results in a "Firefox cannot connect" message. I've tried resetting the DNS to no avail. I'm typing via cell phone and it's annoying, but I'm willing to try about anything.

A:Local access only - router not allowing access to internet

Hi brhanse,

Can you give us the make and model of the router. Also, do each of the computers connect directly via a cable to the back of the router; (example, there are 4 ports on the back of the router and each port has it's own cable leading to each computer) or, does the router connect to a switch and the other computers connect to the router through the switch?

Has this suddenly happened or have their been intermittent issues with connectivity recently?

Hi all,

I'm using an HP G6000 notebook which I've had for a year, trying to connect through a D-link ADSL router and a Linksys wireless G broadband router. I've had the computer for a year and generally it works fine. The problem is I've moved house and the ADSL router and wireless router are new and it will only connect as Local Only. This happens with the wireless and connected directly with a cable to the ADSL. My friends computer, with XP, works fine on he same system but I get error message:

Cannot communicate with DNS server (192.168.254.254) Network diagnostic pinged the remote host but did not recieve a reply.

The repair function resets the network adaptor but this doesn't help.

unfortunately can't cut and paste the IP config because I can't connect to the internet to send it! But can give specific info from it if asked if that helps.

One thing that might be important, when I first set up the wireless router it did connect, but the first time i turned the computer off and back on it didn't connect and hasn't done so since.

Any help would be great,

Simon

last year i set up a tp-link router and wired my laptop to it wirelessly no probs. However, since then my hard drive died and since its been repaired, i cant get the network past 'local only', after researching the net i find that this is a common vista fault. However after a lot of fiddling, vista has diagnosed that i "cannot communicate with the primary DNS server (192.168.1.2).

please please help.

Do you have another computer on this network? I am willing to bet that the DNS address it should get is 192.168.1.1. Make sure you have automatically get an IP address AND DNS. Dear Experts,

After running the last Windows update, I have lost access to my local web server.

Whereas, the server can not be reached via normal short-cut nor under the network directory, the server is somehow still listed as media server, ie access to media files through Windows Media player - but not as file server.

Further hereto, I tested a Cisco network setup program which managed to reconnect the access. However, when removed (only trial) the connection went down again.

My own conclusion is that Vista is blocking the access as a security measure - I just don't know where to search.

FACTS:
COMPUTER:
* Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit, SP2
* Windows Firewall & AVG security center deactived

NAS:
* Qnap T-406 Turbo server
* DHCP, IP allocation

* Network groups identical on Computer and NAS Server "Workgroup"

Look forward to any help on how to reconnect to my server.

Hello,

I have an Ubuntu based home server with a portable usb hard drive shared via samba. I have the drive mapped to windows network drives on both my desktop and laptop. Several programs are dependent on this exact path (e.g., itunes). When I leave the house, however, I'd like to remove this drive from the network and bring it with me. The problem is, when I mount the drive to my laptop, the path is different so itunes and my myriad of other dependent programs can't find it.

What would be a solution to this problem?

Does anyone know of any good software that would run on an XP box for this purpose? I only have about 5 email acounts.

My honest answer, is unless you are utilizing some of the syncing or advanced features of exchange, ditch it, and goto POP3 / SMTP. The only solution you might want to do, if you think this is the best route, is go

otherwise, you will have to host an exchange server on the xp box (expensive)

Hi guys,

I hope there is someone out there who can help me with the following problem:

I have a Windows 7 laptop. On that laptop I have VMWare Player. In the VMWare Player an (Ubuntu) DNS Server is running. The VMWare Player is on it's own Windows interface named VMNet8 (connections are NAT-ed to the guest OS) In my case the DNS server is running on 192.168.129.132

I have some windows DNS tools, when I run:

Code:
dig @192.168.129.132 www.example.com
It resolv to the local DNS server, so far so good.

Now I want my browser to resolv to the local DNS server. But it always resolves to the gateway and DNS of the wireless interface. When I specify the IP number of the local DNS server as the primary DNS server for the wireless interface, it doesn't work. Nothing is resolved anymore.

Anyone got an idea how I can get Windows 7 to look at the VMWare local DNS Server?

Martijn

New guy here,

We have a server 2008 R2 (32) which is a domain controller, we recently switched from open storage (6 raid-5 drives in the server) to closed storage (removing the drive) every night. I do not want staff pulling the power on a domain controller every night to remove the drives, so I looked in the GPO "log on locally' and 'allow shut down'.

This works, however, the temptation is there to 'look around', see what we can see, etc.

Is there a way, either a security setting or a batch file that staff without admin right can log onto a server, down the server correctly, but not open windows explore.

I am thinking some way to write a script "IF logon server = \\DCSERVER then noaccess browsing" something like that, that is your are not an admin, and log onto a server, your Windows Explorer rights are limited.

Thanks.

Hi Guys.

We are having trouble setting up a local repository for AVG update files.

We currently tell the other residents in the college to download the separate files from our server and put them in a folder. Then update from that folder (AVG has that very nice little feature).

I noticed that there is a option to change the update URL's in AVG. So I placed the files on the server and told the program to look there for them and got an error from AVG saying that it could not connect to the internet.?.?

I am thinking a few things;
1. That the destination url MUST be HTTP or FTP (not local \\menz\... etc)
2. The files in the directory are not enough for an automatic update, maybe another index or somthing?
3. The FREE version (which we use for Vista) is designed NOT to be able to do this as i noticed that grimsoft has an AVG server program. Maybe they want us to do that instead?

Anybody else got some theories or answers to this situation?

I have already told the powers that be that I can't get it working but I thought it would look good if I had a few more reasons why I couldn't.

Thanks alot people.

Nath

Make sure port 25525 TCP is open on the computer running the server, and that the server software is running. Setting the firewall for a specific application doesn't always work - you have to go with the actual port number.

A:FTP connects on server PC, but no other PCs on local network or from o

I guess this is a bump. Same problem here. No FTP sharing on local (home) network. Used to work. I did it a couple times a few months back just to test it and now that I want to map network drives to quickly transfer movies and tv shows to my htpc, suddenly it doesn't work.

I don't think it's SP1 related because a friend can still do it on his machine, running the same OS with SP1.
I tried all of the stuff you did already with no success.
I tried Control Panel > Troubleshooting > View all > Incoming connections
It reports an error that more than one device is performing NAT. So I took my modem out of the equation and still nothing.

Someone please help! this sucks. The only thing I have ftp access to is my old modded XBOX. ARGH!

Typing this command in the address bar "ftp://[email protected]"

Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Filezilla timeout
Windows explorer crashes and then gives me an error about typing something wrong or not having permission.

Friends most of the tutorials & helps I see for "sharing" between 7 and XP are just that: setting up a simple share on xp that can be used by other LAN users. That's not what I need or want.
I'm setting up an XP Pro SP3 system as a server, and I want to be able to access virtually everything on that XP system - old files/folders as well as new ones I am creating Simple sharing of "Share" is working fine but that's just the start.

I think this is the right question but I may be mistaken: I want to authenticate across the LAN, to the XP server as a local user with administrative rights: in other words, pass the credentials over so I am logged into that system as a local user. I do not care about remote-desktop per se [that is, passing the bit maps across the wire, taking control of the functions] - just simply having the permissions of the local.

I have tried going folder-by-folder on the xp system and setting each one I will need access to as shared but that approach seems to be the very thing that entangles so many users, resulting in a million threads being posted on the subject. When I follow the myriad "fixes" that are out there, what I get is the ability to see the folders, readily shown on the 'other end' when browsing the LAN, but trying to access those folders and use them is denied.

help pls

I have a Access 2000 database residing on one sever and an installation of SQL Server 2008 residing on another. Both servers are running Windows Server 2003. I created a linked server using the code below. When I run EXEC sp_tables_ex 'PropCont' I get the following,
"OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' IDBInitialize::Initialize returned 0x80004005: The provider did not give any information about the error.].
Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_tables_ex, Line 13
OLE DB provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' reported an error. The provider did not give any information about the error."

I tried changing the code to specify my account information, which has Administrative privileges on the domain and I get,
"OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' IDBInitialize::Initialize returned 0x80040e4d: Authentication failed.].
Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_tables_ex, Line 13
OLE DB provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' reported an error. Authentication failed."

Originally I was getting an error that said, "The workgroup information file is missing or opened exclusively by another user" I found an article on line that suggested I do the following,
"1. Open SSMS
2. Expand Server Objects, Linked Servers, Providers
3. Double click the provider (Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0)
4. UNTICK the "Allow inprocess" option"
I did this and I stopped ... Read more

Hello all and thank you for reading my post. I have a user at home who access' our terminal server and wants to print to her home printer. I was able to find the drivers, add it as a local printer, and assign it the correct TS Port. This works great until she logs off the TS and back on. When this happens, the TS Port for her printer changes. I do not want to give her admin rights so that she can go in and change the port everytime, and this would also be an inconvinience to the user. So I'm hoping there is a way to set the printer TS Port to static, so it remains the same everytime. Or any other workarounds would be helpful!

Thanks,

-Dlaw

One of our servers recently lost its outbout network connectivity. It can ping and communiate with any computer on our LAN, but it can't communicate with anything outside our network. It has a statically asigned IP address, and can ping the default gateway. We haven't changed any settings on the firewall or gateway....any thoughts? I'm sure this will require a bunch of followup information so ask away.

A:Specific server can only acces local computers

Interesting update!! Our firewall is set to one-to-one nat a real IP address to the servers internal IP address. If I turn one-to-one nat OFF, the server is able to ping out. It obviously can't receive connections, but it can ping out.....

Seems like a DNS or record issue or something, but I did a few DNS lookup things and they all seem to check out. Thoughts?

I'm trying to make an ODBC connection from an application I'm using (Crystal Reports) to a database running on the same machine, through SQL "Lite".

The database I'm trying to connect to is the back-end of another application I'm running on the same machine (Xactimate).

How can I find out what the name of the Xactimate database is, and how can I connect to it through Crystal Reports?

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhkay.

*takes deep breath*

I have been now at this for 11 hours. I kid you not.

heres a run down of whats going on, and whats happenening now.

Firstly, I was behind a router earlier this evening. I tried to setup shoutcast server for a live stream for my website. I couldnt get it to connect. Tried forwarding ports,So, I finally got the shoutcast stream going, but then it dissapeared completely, just dropped off. modem froze when I tried to activate virtual server in the settings( I also couldnt edit anything or delete settings - everything was greyed out)
Well, now the router is completely shot. Cant connect to it from the computer, just times out using the 192.168.1.1 or 0.1, It wont let you connect to the internet, It would do anything. Its old, and kinda crappy so that might have been its last legs.
picture me jumping up and down screaming and cursing at router.
Onward ho.

So take off the router, and connect directly.

Well before I could at least SEE my shoutcast stream by surfing to http//localhost:8000

Cant acess it or 24.224.203.215:8000/listen.pls <---- this being the stream.

Cant even GET to local host on 8000, or any other port now.

though the stream shows as active in the dos box that follows it, noone can navigate to the stream and get it.

I CAN ping 127.0.0.1, though I cant ping localhost - i thought these were the same thing?

I am putting this here because I am not sure if this is my comp or shoutcast thats being a jerk.

Thank you ... Read more

A:Shoutcast Server Problems(but may be my local comp)

Well first I would open up a netstat and see if your PC is even listening for a connection on 8000. Also make sure you know if it needs UDP or TCP.

Secondly you can't ping localhost because your PC has no clue what localhost is. Local host is a name for your PC or 127.0.0.1 but pinging it by name will always resolve nothing at all.

Lastly and this is a big one... Check your firewalls! Before since you were behind a router and you had alot of 192.168.X.X rules (or whatever your home network was set as). You probably had a rule for your router within the IP to access your PC's port to pass along information. The problem is now you went to an internet IP those rules have NO bearing on your firewall and its still locked down.

Just a couple of things to look over but I am thinking its more software firewall related though you don't mention having one installed.

Having a headache setting up server 2000. I have bought a big 1500 page book to help me, which is great, but I still can't get past this part.

I can network up many PC's to the server, with little problems. But other than giving someone a admin rights I cannot get anyone to log on to the server. I've tried making the server a domain server but when I try to get a user to log on all they get is "the local policy does not permit you to log on interactively"

Try as I might I cannot get by this. Can someone please tell me how to get this sorted in the most basic of english!

Thanks

Hi all,

Iím testing an application called ProcessMaker on my desktop computer at work. This program has an e-mail notification feature which I canít get to work. It's got a very straightforward mail setup. Iíve set it to send mail through our corporate SMTP server, but it canít successfully connect to the server. It resolves the host and port, but just sits and spins when it tries to establish a connection.

I've worked with our mail admins and established that the SMTP server is working fine. I'm using the right settings. I can telnet to it. I set up both Outlook and a simple mail app I downloaded to send mail through the SMTP server and it worked fine.

I installed ProcessMaker on my cubemate's computer and the e-mail function worked fine.

So, there's some problem with the setup on my workstation that's interfering with this one application. It uses a web browser for its interface, running at localhost:8080.

Here's what I've tried:
I tried it using both IE and Firefox.
I reset my TCPIP settings using netsh int ip reset.
I disabled TCPIP autotuning to see if that was interfering.
I disabled SEP to see if the firewall or other protection scheme was interfering.
None of these has made a difference.Any ideas from the field??

Thanks much!

Alex Harris

Frontpage 2002, Windows XP Pro. Using an AllWebCO template and replacing their stock image with mine.

Not interested in debating the pluses and minuses of Frontpage here. I have used it for years and it works for me. Suddenly, I have an annoying issue, images will not show in Preview using IE7 or IE8. All images show using Firefox or Opera in preview mode. When published to the web all images show, so this is an issue on my local server. I have tried reinstalling FP and IE but this does not help. (Cleared all temp files, etc, and deleted all usage history.) IE is set to show PHOTOS. Anyone any idea what's happened?

Hello,
I have GP deployed printers and some computers do not get the printers.  The PrintService log shows Event ID 513, with error 0x5.  The supposed fix is to add LOCAL SERVICE to the print server properties of each computer with full control.
Does anyone know a way to add LOCAL SERVICE via a script?

Low gal on the totem pole at a new job so I have the oldest, slowest machine. And then another gal left....and left behind a nice, new, fast machine! I'd like to swap machines, but have no help at work other than someone carrying the unplugged machine.

I installed Norton Ghost v 9 on my machine thinking I could make/copy a disk image of my machine into my folder on the server...unplug/move machines and then restore the disk image to the new machine. Norton is asking me for "Domain" "User" "Password" info. I can browse to the path/location where I want to put the disk image. I don't use a password to log onto my machine and know the password for the server. I've tried filling in different info, but am getting an error message. (I'll write down the specific message next time I try this at work)

I'm familiar with individual pcs, home network and using this program to back up/make disk images of my own pcs, but am not that familiar with more "formal" networks.

Can anyone explain these terms to me? Or explain what info the program might be looking for? I just don't get why it's not working when I can browse to the location for the image.

THANKS...I appreciate your help

A:Disk Imaging Local Drive to the Server

Problem is, depending on the version of Windows you're using, the image from your old machine likely won't work on the new one. If it's Windows 2000 or XP, the two machines must have the same I/O chipset, or the image will bluescreen on the new hardware, and you'll need to at least do a repair install to get it working again (there are other workarounds that can be done before imaging, but they get somewhat involved). In the end, it's probably more trouble than it's worth.

If you're mostly worried about your work on the old machine, just take the drive from it and plug it into the new one as a secondary drive, so you can access and copy off your files.
