Can't power-off Thinkpad L560 - it boots up immediately after shut down.

Q: Can't power-off Thinkpad L560 - it boots up immediately after shut down.

Hi! I have Lenovo Thinkpad L560 (Type: 20F1-0029MH). After ~2 weeks of usage, I faced a weird problem - there was no way I could power it off.The following actions:- shutdown- hibernate- press power button for 12swill shutdown the computer, but it will start up again immediately. Laptop has all the updates from Microsoft and Lenovo, including latest BIOS. The only solution, which worked, was to reset CMOS by removing the BIOS battery. I did it 2 weeks ago, but today I faced the same problem again. Removing battery fixed the problem again! But is there any better solution to try?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello Dear Lenovo community, I recently got my new L560 Thinkpad and installed Linux (Mint 18, based on Ubuntu 16.04) on it. Unfortunately the fan is ramping up quiet loud when it is starting to run, just to go down to an acceptable level after half a second or so. But that first half second it seems to run on full power which is actually quiet annoying. Not only to me but also in meetings. As it turns out, I am not able to control or regulate the fan's behaviour.Usually with the older Thinkpads I used to work with (ok that is some long time ago), it was possible to control the fan using the thinkpad_acpi kernel module thus having a virtual file in '/proc/acpi/ibm/fan' which allowed control of the Thinkpads fan within Linux just by writing level values to it. Another way was to write rpm values directly to the pwm file somewhere in the /sys section. However, it seems that newer Thinkpads tell the kernel where to find the fan and thus a '/proc/acpi/ibm/fan' file is provided. But any values I write to this file in order to change the level will be ignored, same for the pwm file in the /sys section. The fan-file constantly states:level 1rpm 257The pwm-file is stuck at 36.Even if the fan is not running at all or on full power. It seems that the new models of L/T series ignore any commands from the OS in order to regulate the fan's speed.  I assume that could be fixed with an update of the firmware/UEFI (I have 1.15 installed, the newest, 1.17 doe... Hi! I have a brand new Thinkpad L560, a week old. Installed brand new Windows 10 x64.Everything worked well.  When I installed ESET Endpoint Security, few times a day my LAN connection would break in terms that I will loose connectivity to the Internet and internal servers (I can not ping internal DNS servers, any of my coworkers have no problems). If I switch to wireless connection when the LAN is down, everything works OK. My LAN connection will not get back to the Internet until I reboot the machine (I will have yellow exclamation mark in notification area saying that I do not have the access to the internet and if I unplug and plug the cable, Windows will say "Identifying network" but will never finish it). I updated Intel Ethernet Connection I219-LM driver to the latest release (12.15.23.1 dated 10th may 2016) but the problem continued. I deinstalled ESET and installed ESET Antivirus without firewall. Same thing happened with exact the same behaviour. I deinstalled ESET and installed AVG. Same thing happened after half an hour. So I decided to ask for help here since I can not work without antivirus software.  Do you have any suggestions? Thanks! Best regards,Bojan Miljkovic

Hi,

So, I have a computer that I have to give to someone. The problem is, that every time I boot the computer up, it shows "Starting Windows" for just 1 second and immediately boots into Startup Repair. Startup Repair then fails to fix the error, but from the info I got, it seems that the registry is corrupted.
The things I have done:

1. Copy new files from the DVD to the config folder - Nothing changed.
2. Check the HDD for problems. Seagate SeaTools - Passed the long and the short test.
3. Check the RAM - Memtest86+ v5.01 - no errors.
4. How I got the error: First, I tried to install SP1, but it rolled back. Second, then I installed the drivers for the computer and restarted every single time it asked. Tried SP1 again, but this time I got this issue.

System specs for that computer are after slashes (for every part).
Sorry for any grammar mistakes.
P.S. Can't access the CMD from anything (From Startup Repair, from DVD).

Hi Haexagon,
As the comp hasn't got SP1 on it, and your passing it on.
Why not clean install, dont forget to change Bios order to DVD as first boot option.

So lately my computer's firewall has decided to not work so I searched around and eventually concluded on doing a upgrade reinstall.
As I didn't want to lose any of my files, drivers or programs.
All seemed like it went well until the computer rebooted for the last time before it reaches the
" Setting up for first use " dialog
Though before this was able to happen the computer went into a reboot loop with bsod 0x0000001E

After a large amount of reluctant clicking
The computer NOW only boots to the System Recovery Options window and the ONLY option is Startup Repair ; There is NO command prompt no diagnostics, nothing,
Just Startup Repair, in which start up repair is unable to do anything and continues to loop itself with a Don't send dialog

I have tried inserting the installation disk and accessing the Repair Computer but it presents an incompatibility error.

I have no F8 menu at all, (no safe mode, which I can't access anyway because the computer can't set up for first use).

Need any Assistance, all is welcome, thanks.

A:System immediately boots to Startup Repair - No access to F8

Please fill in your System Specs in bottom left corner of your post.

Running any OS without having your files backed up is careless. Running a Repair Install or Reinstall without backing up your files is reckless.

You can try to rescue your files now using step 9 in Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start
however I doubt there is anything to repair since the reinstall aparently failed.

So I would skip to running Factory Recovery or getting the superior Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 (same for retail) which will yield a perfect install if you stick with the methods and tools given.

Hello everbody out there,

I've got a serious problem with my private PC. Somehow I had to change from Win98 towards Win2k (due to my soundcard). And within my installation procedure I was led to a rebooting problem.

I've done the complete Windows installation (incl. Online Update SP4 + Hotfixes) three times. Afterwards my computer works absolutely fine, but after installing my software the systems always gets stuck with the shutdown and reboots due this system crash. The Bios complains about a failed initiation of the power_management_driver and Win2k show an ID49: Event log entry. Which states a lack of virtual memory. I've already followed the whole Microsoft instruction concerning virtual memory without any success. Even removing suspicious software (compared with the installing time) failed. So I' tried a Systemrepair out the Win2k surface. Then a message was posted saying that the repair was terminated due to a non-completed installation procedure, with was not further specified.

So, does anybody know where I can terminate the procedure or what I should do? Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Hello,
I've got exactly the same problem as my Dell XPS 13 previsouly with my new Dell T20, firmware A11, Proxmox OS.
I've tried multiple solution given by various community (Dell, Ubuntu, Arch...):

set acpi=force or acpi=noirq : NOT WORK
install laptop-mode-tools: NOT WORK
set SATA to Off -> ATA -> AHCI -> RAID: NOT WORK
unpugg every USB device: NOT WORK
set Power State to Disable / Only S5 / Only S4-S5: NOT WORK

As I manage my serve remotely, it is a serious issue for me, and as I see, Dell is not very carefull/serious with this kind of options.
Does anybody has another solution ? Maybe Dell will finally handle this feature correctly...

I've had a strange 'fault' just appear on my machine - when I try to open a windows explorer window (e.g. just by clicking Computer), the window tries to open, but immediately shuts with a sort of 'ta-da' sound! Also, when I try to run most applications, they just don't start - it looks like Vista (Home Premium) tries for a couple of seconds (I get the timer) but then nothing appears. If I look at the task manager, it will be listed as a process, but it clearly isn't running properly.

I'm not aware of any new software installations or driver updates (but who knows what Vista's doing behind my back!), I've not seen any virus notifications and Spybot (which does run) doesn't show up anything.

I mainly use the machine running Media Center, and that's still fine, but I just had to go back to run something else the other day and found the problem. Needless to say that I've tried restarting with no improvement, and it's fine in safe mode.

Anybody seen this before and have any idea what the cause may be?

Thanks!

Hi,  To isolate this issue I would suggest you to run a test on the battarey. HP provides diagnostic software you can use to test hardware components on your computer and confirm hardware failures. The Battery Test checks your system to make sure the battery is functioning properly. It will test the battery and allow you to run calibration if needed. Please refer the doc below for more info on the same http://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c04700771 ***If my post helped, click the White thumbs-up symbol to say thanks******Please mark Accept As Solution if my post solved your problem******Although I am an HP Employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP***

I am running Windows 7, 8GB, i5-2400 CPU, @ 64 bits with Alienware
This has been an ongoing problem for a while now. My computer shuts down unexpectedly at seemingly random times. It may have something to do with heating issues since it usually occurs after the computer sets idle or in use for long periods. When I try to reboot after the unexpected shutdown, the fans wherrr, but it will not reboot until the computer is shut down for a cooling-off period of time. I've checked memory problems, all the usb cords are connected fully, drivers updated, system performance and all devices checked and just finished cleaning out any dust. Problem Example: When I do a backup to an attached hard-drive that takes a half-hour or so, it completes the backup and then shuts down (not instructed to shut down after backup). Then will not reboot until left idle for a long period of time.

Temp solution: Hold down the power button until the computer completely shuts off. Wait 1 min and then turn it on again (important to wait at least 1 min).
Long term solution (!) is to turn of hibernation which is done in advance settings for your power plan. The standard is "180 min", set this to 0.

My Yoga S1 has contradictory, intermittent power issues that I'm trying to chase down. Culprits are bad power bric/cord/plug or power socket on mother board or power board that feeds into power button/led on. One day it blacked out and wouldn't restart to hard drive or windows stage. I did get an error code which I can't remember 5100 or 5500 poss?, that seemed to indicate the power board or ribbons to that needed replacement or re-attachment. So fiddled with it and it did fire up in windows all ok. Then ran out of power and died again. power button wouldn't light up. plugging in power unit did light up led as getting charge. Left it overnight and then it miraculously charged up. pushed power button light up twice then nothing. took out power board/detached ribbon, then it fired up to windows, fixed some hd errors and has been restarting without problems. Except now there is no plug showing on battery icon when plugged in. So not recharging but I'm sure the battery is good. And logically, the power brick and plug must be feeding electricity into laptop to get it to recharge enough to start up. So power socket and plug may be suspect with intermittent contact problems. Or the power board somehow is involved in this? I've ordered a new powerboard as easy screw in and cheap. My question about powerboard is does this control ability of plug to charge battery? power brick with new plug is next order from ebay. but the power socket, which see... When I got home from work tonight, my Win7 desktop appeared to be asleep, which is normal. I hit the power button to wake, it, walked away, and when I came back, it was not up as I'd have expected.

I looked more closely and something really weird was happening.

The fan would turn on and the power lights would come on. Not sure if I heard the HD (there's an OS C drive, and mirrored data D drives). Three seconds later, it would power off, without anything ever displaying on the monitor, no bios screen, nothing. This would just keep repeating.

I managed to get the CD drive open and put a boot disk in, but the whole sequence happens so fast that it doesn't even recognize the CD or try to boot from it.

Right now I have the computer turned off and unplugged, and hope that this will rectify itself with the passage of time.

Well today I was cleaning around my computer area and well was dusting where my computer sits and I pushed it too far out and it fell and hit the ground. It was on too and the monitor lost signal even though the VGA cord was plugged in...Since I couldn't properly shut it off by going to start etc etc I just held the power button till it shutdown..I thought my video card got loose so I hit the kill switch unplugged it and checked everything, but it was all fine. When I plugged it back in,it turned on and well kinda lagged on start up,more than usual...I figured everything was fine until I shut it down and after it was off like 5 seconds later it turned on by itself?? I checked my motherboard and components for any damage or cracks but couldn't find anything.
Now this I do not mind,i'm just afraid that it'll cause damage to my PC or cause my motherboard to fry or something because now in order to keep it off from starting byitself I have to shutdown then quickly hit the kill switch, sometimes I dont do it fast enough and the computer slightly turns on,too fast to stop me from switching it off. Also when I hit the killswitch to off and then switch it back on.the pc refuses to start itself until I push the ON button and shutdown again..I need help, what can I do to fix this issue?

I don't think its my power supply, everything starts and works fine. I'm still waiting to see how it effects my PC performance.

I have a IBM thinkpad T23 laptop. When I try to start it up it boots only to many lines of different colors. It has a whirring sound (similar to that when a cd won't start up) coming from inside the body of the laptop.
The fan is working, the light on the keyboard (Z) lights up, however the emblem for the hard drive does not light up. It takes many tries to just get the colors to come up, most of the time there is a blank screen.
I have tested the RAM, pulled the DVD drive (also checked for a disk), nothing else is hooked to the computer except the AC adapter, the battery is fairly good, not dead.
Any ideas???

Hi. . .

Have you checked the Event Viewer to see if Vista has any issues closing apps?

START | type eventvwr and hit enter | start w/the custom views/admin - you can 2x-click on an entry for additional information.

Also... try a forced shutdown and see if it makes any difference. Bring up an elevated admin cmd prompt (DOS) -
START | type cmd.exe | right-click on cmd.exe above | select run as admin | type the following:

Code:
shutdown /s
A message will come up saying shutdown T-minus 60 seconds and counting. Did this perform any faster?

Finally, what about SAFEMODE? Does the system power down any differently when compared to the SP1 partition doing the same?

Hi,

My mom's PC (an HP) will start up, but then nearly every program (REVO Uninstaller being the only exception) I open freezes and will not close. If I try to close the programs with the Task Manager, the Task Manager also freezes up and will not close, even if I open another Task Manager window. I tried several times to restart or to shut down through the Start menu and the Task Manager, but both methods failed to restart or shut down Windows. After waiting for up to five minutes following various attempts, I gave up and pressed the power button on the PC tower, only to repeat the same steps with the same results after powering up again. My mom tells me that the PC sometimes allows her to perform tasks, although slowly, but then other times it behaves as I have described here. She also tells me that she downloads several attachments from chain emails every day, so I told her (again) to stop downloading and opening attachments.

My first suspicion is that Google Chrome, which I downloaded and installed the day before this trouble started, is destabilizing Windows XP and causing everything to crash (even though everything worked fine immediately after I installed Chrome). I had a similar problem, although slightly different symptoms, when I accidentally installed a beta version of Chrome on my own (Dell) PC last year.

After one of the hard boots of the HP machine, I immediately ran Revo Uninstaller to remove Chrome. Revo seemed to be running Chrome's uninstaller, bu... Read more

Hi guys,

I've had this problem with my PC now for the last few weeks. When I power up my computer, it doesn't switch on immediately and didn't come on until around 15 mins later. This 15 mins then became 30 mins. When the computer did power on however, everythign was fine and I could access all my files etc properly.

I suspected that it may be the PSU or MB. I opened it up, and first took the MB's battery out, and then put it back in again after 5 mins. This didn't do anything. At this point I had brought the computer downstairs. Then I decided to make sure the whole tower was free of dust etc and then try it. All of a sudden, it started to work correctly i.e. I could switch it off and then when I switch it on again, it would come on right away.

I took it upstairs again and the same problem started again. During all this however, the motherboards green power light is always on and I can't see any warning lights or obvious areas of damage to it. My dad then took the battery of the MB out again and put it back in again and then it started coming on immediately again. However, I went to try it again, and guess what, it's not powering up at all now again.

What do you think may be the cause of this? Is a new PSU in order? When I manage to get into BIOS, In the 'Hardware Monitor' section, the voltages are all indicated as being correct i.e. where it says it should be 5, it is, and where it says 12, it is etc.. The CPU's ... Read more

There is a jumper you can reset so you don't have to remove the battery for 5 minutes every time.

I just completed a new build. It powered on fine and I managed to configure BIOS but when it tried to restart the power supply immediately just clicked off. There was a small pause and the system tried to power on and shut off again. It kept cycling like that until I switched the power supply off.

Here are my specs:

Motherboard: MSI K9N2 Diamond
PSU: Coolmax CUG-950W
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955
Graphics: Using Integrated
1 IDE DVD/RW
1 IDE HDD
1 SATA HDD
1 120mm Fan
2 80mm Fans

I'm not quite sure what's causing the problem as the system managed to power on and run fine at least twice and the 950W PSU should be enough to run the hardware I have and then some right?

Greetings,

I just purchased an IBM T21 ThinkPad and I noticed it doing something strange. When I attempt to boot from battery only it boots to hibernate mode. A box comes up and says plug in AC or it will hibernate. I thought maybe it was a bad battery but it has 93% left when I do get it started. Is there a setting that only lets it boot to hibernate somewhere?

Thanks
Smitty

I've been having issues with my computer refusing to power on for about five minutes after a crash. If I hit the power button immediately after the shutdown, nothing happens, as if there's no power to it. But if I wait about five minutes, it will power on and load Windows up just fine.

I'm pretty sure it's a hardware issue, but I'd like to eliminate the possibility of a software issue and see what the BSOD message says before I go messing with the hardware. I've attached the SF Diagnostic zip file from the latest crash.

Thanks in advance!

I apologize, I'm relatively new at support forums but I am concerned on the status of my Laptop.

Anyways, here's the deal. Last night I put my computer into hibernate (which I do every night, so this is a brand new occurrence) and this morning I turned it on, according to the start up screen, Windows failed to shut down properly and it asked me if I wanted to continue start up normally. I accepted. Then, it started up in System Repair mode (which was visually, safe mode) and apparently, fixed something. Everything runs fine afterwards but it's irritating me that something might be wrong with my Computer.

I checked my Hard drive manager, it said everything was "Healthy", I did a "SFC/Scannow" and that repaired some things, but not everything (according the CBS.log). I did a virus scan and then restarted (I can restart without an issue), but after that I tired to hibernate and the same issue persisted.

So it's related to Hibernating only.

I went to my Event Viewer to see if it would shed any light and in the critical section, these came up. http://i47.tinypic.com/4v1gd3.png They're at the same times this happened so could it be a power issue?

I have a warranty so I can get anything repaired but I personally don't want to wait if I can just fix the issue myself, so any help is greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance.

A:System fails to shut down after Hibernate and boots w/Startup Repair

Sorry for the bump, but I'm really urgent on this. I hate having to shut down every time I stop using my computer.

Another tid-bit, this also happens when I go into sleep mode. Do you think System Restore would fix this? If I restored back in time, would any viruses I had previously be restored as well?

Thanks again and I apologize.

Hello All,
I've just purchased a S2716DG, and when I power on the monitor it Immediately states 'entering power save mode'?
I plugged the cable (HDMI) into my laptop and it works straight away, so clearly the monitor works.
Therefore I presume that there is an issue between the desktop and the monitor? I'm using a Optiplex 390 desktop - i3 CPU with a NVIDIA Quadro NVS 295 connected via a DisplayPort cable, I've also tried it without the card and get the same result.
Can anyone help clarify what is the issue and how I can resolve it please?

A:S2716DG - Immediately enters power save mode

Read through this.
The S2716DG HDMI is using 2560x1440 60Hz.
The S2716DG DP is using 2560x1440 60Hz/85Hz/100Hz/120Hz/144Hz.
It is possible that the S2716DG DP is set to a Hz that your video card does not support.
When connected via DP, does the Menu button bring anything up? If yes, go to Others.* Factory Reset- Reset all settings to the factory preset values* Go back and change Monitor Deep Sleep to Disable

Hi all, I have an HP Eliteboot 2760p which won't powerup (or more specifically, won't stay on.) When I slide the power switch, the usual LED's turn on, includnig the three at the front edge of the unit for PowerON, Charge and HDD activity.  The internal fan also spins up for about 1 second. But - after that one second, it turns back off, leaving only the orange charge LED illuminated fro about .5 of a second, then that also turns off. On occasion, the systen tries to turn on again (all by itself) after about 4 to 5 seconds, only to repeat the same outcome; powering off. I receive no beeps, no flashing LED's (such as the usual blinking LED's for diagnostic error codes). I have tried removing the HDD, the Memory, the battery and the result is the same. The 'hard reset' procedure also failed to make a difference. So - I essentially have no diagnostic output at all!  The one and only thing that changed close to the time of failure is that we plugged a Microsoft USB headset into the unit, which functioned perfectly... (We used it for about 3 hours almost immediately after plugging it in). Does anyone have any thoughts around what I might be able to do with this Laptop? Is there a way to force any other type of resets, or force it into some sort of diagnostic poweron sequence or anything else at all? I know it's an older laptop, but it's my little boys and h loves it, and the unit itself is still near new - it's hardly had any u... Hi, I've just purchased a refurbished Dell E6400 laptop a couple months ago, OS is OEM Win7 Pro. It is

working fine with no service affecting problems. There is one issue I've been unable to find a resolution for,

when using ac power the laptop powers up immediately when the power cord is plugged in. I've looked and

looked through the choices for power options, plans, etc... and haven't found anything about this particular

setting. I'd like it if when I plugged it in it would wait until I pressed the power button, I haven't found

anything indicating this is default with no option to change it, if it is I can live with it but would rather use

the power button to turn it on.

Hi,
Not a built in windows function,
You would most likely need to go through the dell utilities to find the feature,
Where did you buy the model ?

I just bought a new Horizon 2 AIO computer from Best Buy. I plugged it in and turned the power on, the Lenovo loading screen came up, and then a "power saver mode" count-down appeared, counting down from 9, before the screen went black.  The power light is still on, but the computer appears to be asleep. I have tried this several times (after holding down the power button to turn it off) with the same result. Why won't my brand new computer start???  Please help, thank you!

Sorry to hear of the problem.  Unfortunately what you have described is not something a new system should do.  Since the system is brand new, I would suggest you just return it to Best Buy and do an exchange.

Hello and HELP!Just unpacked a Dell Inspiron 530 I purchased in Jan. 2009 (long story). After hooking everything up, I turned it on. Monitor displays, just for a brief moment, just a flash really, AUTO DETECT (ANALOG INPUT) ENTERING POWER SAVE, then it turns black, and nothing I do brings it back on. This Inspiron only came with a VGA monitor plug. The flat screen has both a DVI and VGA plugs, and both the DVI and VGA cables. I plugged the VGA cable into the VGA plugs. I tried the fixes I found on this site: With pc on, unplugging VGA cable from both pc and monitor, plug back in. Disconnecting power plug from monitor, plugging back in. Upon booting, pressing F6 key. Nothing. Nothing. Nothing. It's past warranty. I noticed when the monitor is not plugged into the pc and I turn it on, it still flashes the AUTO DETECT (ANALOG INPUT) ENTERING POWER SAVE message, and shuts down. Could the cable be bad? Could the video card be bad? Could the video card be set to DVI? I can't even get into and see the BIOS, blind without visual. The speakers are in the monitor, and no sound is coming from them. Don't know if Windows (Vista) is even launching. Any suggestions?

A:Monitor goes immediately into POWER SAVE MODE upon bootup

I took memory cards out, lightly rubbed the copper with a rubber band, popped them back in, and viola, the screen came on!   Found this trick on the Kioskea web site. Thanks for responding though Sujatha!

Hello, my T500 does not turn on, no lights are lit, battery not charging. I tried to turn in the dock, but nothing. I tried to insert a fully charged battery but nothing too. Will probably be something wrong with the motherboard, maybe some fuse, but do not know where to look. Thanks for help
