I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system
It's worked out well for many of us in the past.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello, I have a HP Compaq Presario CQ40-314TU Notebook. Currently, Windows Vista is installed on the notebook. I am planning to upgrade the notebook to Windows 7 Professional Edition. However, when I searched for drivers for Windows 7, I did not find any on HP website. I searched as follows: 1. Visited http://support.hp.com/us-en2. Entered Compaq Presario CQ40-314TU Notebook PC in the search box3. Selected Software and Drivers from the left menu4. Clicked Go5. Selected Windows in the Operating system dropdown list6. In the Version dropdown list, I only had two options; Windows Vista (32-bit) and Windows Vista (64-bit). Even selecting one of these options displays:No software or drivers are available for this product with the selected operating system. Please make a different selection, or visit the product homepage. Please tell me the link for installing drivers for this notebook for Windows 7 Professional Edition. Regards,Aziz
Hi, As you can see, no available link for Windows 7. Please run Windows 7 updates FEW TIMES then post back missing driver(s). Regards.Read other 1 answers
hello there,.. please help!
i have Compaq Presario CQ40-717TU Notebook PC,
the problem is
my netbook support for windows vista, but i want to downgrade it to windows xp, because some school work still using windows xp. I've been surfing everywhere.
I can a lot of tutorials some of which is flash the bios. update bios with its high risk.
As for some of them give a tutorial to make your own xp sata, using "nlite" and I became confused when I have to find a suitable driver for ahci [CQ40-717TU].
to the seniors and professors. please guide
where I have to download the ahci driver?
how do I update my bios (I still lay the problem update / flash bios).
First check for all the Win XP drivers for your hardware.
You can check your HP/compaq PC here:
General XP Downgrade Guide for HP Laptops - HP Support Forum
NOTE: Please read this thread fully.
If your Win XP CD, does not support your Sata Controller, you will need to load drivers to uses at F6.
Load Sata Controller drivers with a floppy disk is the best way.
SATA Drivers - Load in Windows XP Setup on Dual Boot
SATA Drivers - Slipstream into Windows XP CD
Ever since I've bought this computer (beginning of 2009) my Compaq Presario CQ40 has been extremely slow. I don't really run much software on it, but it takes around 10-15 minutes to start up all processes.
I run Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Firewall as security, but it previously had Trend Micro Internet Security in 2009.
I do Disk Cleanups, a full defrag through CMD and a chkdsk /r but it's still painfully slow.
The CPU fan is nearly always running all of the time, and after a quick Google this seems to be a problem in the Presario?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Everyone, please inform me the driver motherboard for Compaq Presario CQ40-530TU Notebook PC which is compatible with Windows 7 - 32 bit. In HP Website, I only found the driver for Windows Vista (32-64 bit). I really need your help all.
I think most, if not all, of the Vista drivers will work on Windows 7. Actually, when I upgraded a Vista laptop some years ago most of the drivers were included in Windows 7 so you may not need all. Hi! My computer is Compaq Presario CQ40. It's 8 years old and can only be used when directly plugged in to the electric socket. It's been working fine until last night when it suddenly shut off. At first I thought that maybe the plug was accidentally pulled out from the source but when I tried to plug it in again, the light indicator beside the power supply in the unit itself won't turn on. I tried to unplug and plug the charger adapter but nothing happened. May I know what could have possibly happened? Is there a way for me to check the possibile problem? I know that my laptop is very old, but I still find it very useful and I wish to continue to use it in the future. Hope to hear from you soon.Thank you!
If you are lucky the AC adapter has just died. To understand more, no light comes on the adapter brick when you plug it in the wall and no light comes on next to the AC jack when you plug into the laptop? Where do you live? On an 8 year old laptop you can find a useable "3rd party" charger for a few dollars.Read other 1 answers

I'm trying to repair/reformat a laptop. It's a Compaq laptop, Presario CQ40. It originally had Windows XP but started giving a blue screen. I can't get anything to work now. Windows won't boot, all it gives is a registry error (software/hive). When I try to boot from the Windows XP disc, it starts the XP boot load, but right before it gets to XP Recovery Repair screen, it gives another blue screen. It says "Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7C1E524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). I don't know what to try. Several internet searches have suggested turning the SATA to Legacy in the BIOS, but I have nothing in the BIOS that relates to SATA. I'm stuck. Please help!
Blue screens can be caused y a couple of failing devices; HDD and RAM are most common. Substituting system components with good ones is a cheap way to solve problems like this. It's easiest to start with the system ram and you can easily eliminate the faulty component that way.

I have a Compaq Presario M2000. The screen just isn't big enough for me to work on a few spreadsheets at once. I want to add a monitor, which appears to be easy, just buy one and plug it in. Am I missing something? If I add a flat screen, will the laptop monitor still be active? I don't want to buy the monitor until I know for sure that it will work and how it will work.

Hey everybody! Apprecaite your help on this = ]
Got an old Presario 1800 laptop from my old man, now the thing has a PIII 700 mghz, 64mg ram and a 20gb hardrive. The problems were numerous:
When I first started it up it could read/write to the ram, so removed that, cleaned it and replaced and it finally booted up, however, when it boots the compaq flash screen comes on Win 200 shows the load (Press F8 for setup with the white bar) and then when it comes to the actual flash screen with the blue bar and the whole screen goes garbled. Now I know nuthin is wrong with the screen itself cuz when I run the boot setup it shows everything fine. It's only on that Win flashscreen with the blue bar, after giving it sometime it will either freeze or the moniter will shut off. It will also freeze on ocasion when booting and I know my RAM is shot, but what else could be the culprit for the garbled screen? It also goes "BEEEEP BEEP BEEP" at times too...
Thanks for everything! let me know if you need more details!
The beeps are telling you there is something wrong with your video card. If it is not onboard take it out and re seat it and check in device manager to see there is a yellow triangle beside Display adapters....you might have to go into safemode if the screen is too garbled by pressing F8 on start up.
Hello I am having issues with my Compaq Presario C700 Laptop. During use (and no specific use either). It will randomly freeze up for about a minute, screen will go blank, when it comes back on (15 seconds later) the screens resolution is set to 640x480, with 16 bit color. Can't change the display settings. Checked the drivers and the monitor shows up with the proper installed drivers. Chipset drivers are still installed correctly, VGA drivers installed correctly. Nothing looks out of the ordinary.

My friend called me up the one day and said her computer was giving a "fan broken error", and dropped it off today. When I opened the case I seen a lot of dust under the fan and inbetween the heat sink of the processor (AMD). I walked away briefly and my roomate decided to detach the fan, heat sink and processor (all one piece). I was quite upset because I simply just wanted to remove the fan on the top and clean all the dust and leave the processor in its place. I know some processors require a bit of strength to put back in, this one is a AMD athlon 64 processor 3800+. The only thing i did was put it back into the socket, lock it in place and continue to clean the fan and heat sink out. When I was finished cleaning everything out (mind you i had my wristband on to avoid electrical shock to anything) i plugged it all in and turned it on. the monitor says "no input signal.....going to sleep". now the computer runs, all the fans are running, HD runs, and im think the processor is running but not sure how to find out for sure. Im in IT right now and in the process of finishing a built computer so i know a bit about them. I'm thinking it could be the video card which is built into the motherboard. I just dont want to order a new motherboard if it could be something else. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I also forgot to add, i tested the monitor with my laptop and it works.
I have a 2009 compaq presario. Recently I turned it on and saw nothing but a white screen with some vertical streaks of different colors so I turned it off. A few hours later I turned it on again and saw the standard black and white screen with text saying that the computer was improperly shut down and asked if I wanted to start in safe mode. But my keyboard strokes had no effect, and the highlighted option did not change when I pressed the up and down arrows, nor did the screen change when I pressed enter. But I waited a few minutes and eventually got the login screen for windows vista, showing my icon and the guest icon. Again, nothing on the screen changed when I pressed enter or attempted to move the cursor with the mouse. Then a minute later the screen slowly started to fade to white, with the colored vertical streaks as described earlier. Soon the white and the streaks filled the whole screen. A few minutes later though the login screen suddenly appeared again, but it was still unresponsive and again slowly faded to white.
I believe that the operating system itself is probably in good order, and it is probably responding to all of my keystrokes, but that it's the video signal or the monitor that is failing. I would like to determine which it is. Do I have a faulty monitor, or is the problem with the video card? Or with something else?
Secondly, if it is a simple hardware problem, I have a 2nd laptop of the same model. How difficult would it be to swap out needed ... Read more
If the 2nd laptop is exactly the same model you can put the hard drive from the problem laptop into the other laptop and, if there is no problem with that hard drive, it should boot into Windows.
See how that goes and let us know. What model Compaq laptop are they ?
Does anybody know of a freeware program that monitors a Compaq Presario 5838 cpu temperature? Motherboard Monitor 5.0 is wonderful but does not work with the 5838 board.

I have a computer from 1998; I think it's a Pentium 3 (maybe 2; I don't remember). About a year ago, it started connecting to the monitor very sporadically. Eventually, it outright died. At the time, it seemed very likely that it had picked up a virus. We bought a new computer, but would like to drag some of the old stuff off of the Compaq, if I could get it up and working.
It beeps and clicks and whirls away happily...but the screen remains absolutely blank. It used to work if I switched monitors, but only temporarily. The keyboard does not seem to be receiving power, either. Hard to say with the mouse, since I'm getting nothing.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Check to see if the old computer's hard drive is compatible with a hard drive connection on your new machine. There are two issues, the type of connector and the speed settings.
Your old computer's hard drive is undoubtedly designed to mate with an IDE connector. Most computer mother boards with IDE connectors have at least two IDE connectors. If your new computers has IDE connectors, you may need to free up one by disconnecting a CD or zip drive. Configure your old computer's hard drive as a "slave," connect the power cable, and then connect the IDE ribbon cable. When you turn on your machine, if the drive is operational and compatible, you should be able to read the contents of the files. I am not an expert, but I believe the older slower ATA/100 hard drives will work with mother boards designed for faster ATA/133 hard drives, but of course the read / write speeds will be at the slower rate.
After finding that you can examine the file directory of the old computer's hard drive, but before opening any of the files, it is a good idea to have a virus search program, such as Norton or MacAfree, check the files for computer viruses. Once you are certain that the files you want are virus free, copy them across.
If your new computer does not have an IDE connector on its motherboard, perhaps because it uses one of the newer harddrives with a serial connector, search for someone that does have a comput... Read more

I'd like to fix it before trying to format the entire disc....

It seems like you may have bad memory and reinstalling windows will not fix this issue.
What you should try to do is get a copy of MemTest.
Burn it to a CD and check your RAM. Let it test about 3 times, as if it passed 100% once it may not be an accurate result!

My Notebook is HP/Compaq CQ40-323AX. When I seed the windows7, I love it at once. And I have installed win7 to virtual pc. But I want to install win7 to my notebook but not virtuall pc. So some problems occured. It's the driver. Because the win7 was based on the vista, I think it may run well when useing the vista drivers (The drivers were downloaded at www.hp.com.cn)
Who can tell me I can do as I think? It's my thought right?
Or someone can give me a better way!
How is the performance under Vista Ultimate? If you are using Vista Ultimate there should be no problem upgrading or even 'Fresh' installing windows 7.
Yes, a lot of Vista drivers work with Windows 7 (just right-click the setup file and in properties select Compatability for Vista). This works about 90% of the time, if installing build 7068 you may not even need to update your drivers.
NOTE: You will need to backup you existing files (pictured/documents/music/videos etc) and make sure you've got an installation disk for Vista in case the upgrade/install fails.
P.S sorry for the late reply

My brother recently bought a new HP desktop PC so he wants to sell his old laptop (Compaq Presario 700, Windows XP Home Edition) and we both agreed we should do a full restore to completely wipe the hard drive clean to it's original slate and we have the original Compaq ''QuickRestore'' discs and for whatever reason, they're not working. There is three CD's and not a single scratch or mark on any of them. I've tried to run all three on the laptop and the only thing that happens is that the folder containing the discs files on it is what pops up and no actual setup occurs like it says on the little piece of paper that comes with the CD's.
This is what it says....
First, if your Presario Notebook is attached to a Port Replicator (QuikDock), you must turn the power to the computer off, disconnect it from the QuikDock, and plug it into an external power socket. Disconnect any printer cables or other peripherals from the computer before using Quick Restore.
1. Insert the Quick Restore CD (bootable disk) in the CD drive, and press Enter. A WARNING message appears advising that you are attempting to totally reformat your hard drive. Confirm by following the next step.
2. Press 1 and then Enter to continue. The Power Quest Quick Restore Wizard starts copying and uncompressing data to the local hard drive. This process takes approximately 7-10 minutes.
This warning message never appears and none of this ever happens. Does anyone know why... Read more
Is there an autorun.exe? Setup.exe? Any executable at all on the root of the disk?
I recently wanted to install a program which told me i halfway through the installer that i had to have SP3 to run it.
So i googled sp3, went to the microsoft website and downloaded it.
My pc started to do the loop reboot thing thats assicoiated with amd processors..of course i didnt read up on this before i installed it.
So i researched how to fix this problem and came up with alot of different solutions.
I went to go get the xp disk. Inserted it in the drive and pressed F10 upon startup which launched the system recovery thing for compaq. I clicked recover or whatever and it started to do its thing, next thing i know its reinstalled xp...
So im thinking its wiped everything and installed a fresh version of XP which is not the case.
It still shows the programs in the program list but i cant use them and when i look at the C: drive capacity, there is still the same amount taken up and a little bit more, as i had previously before the crash.
Ive kinda worked out that its installed itself over the top of my older xp? but i dont know how to get this back

I need security of course, so when I set up an internet connection (will use my dial up numbers which come with the DSL I use with my 2006 laptop), what is out there for free anti virus, free anti spyware, and free firewall that will work with equipment this old?
When it loads from the off position, a page comes up that says a "SYSTEM.INI" file is missing; it says to reinstall and all that, but when I just press enter, it goes ahead and loads all right. I cannot find what won't work without this file. Is there a resource on the internet where I could reinstall this missing file? I do not have original disk or floppies--just the laptop and the power connections.
Thanks in advance for any help and info,

Hi there...I have another thread related to my Dell Inspiron, I think its fried, I dont have any responses, so I'll try to re-do the hard drive somehow.
This is related to my desktop.
Upon startup, I get an error message the states: "Required System Software Not Installed. Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0 is required to continue. This software is available for free download at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/"
I know for a fact that the .Net framework 2.0 IS downloaded and installed on this computer, I checked. As a matter of fact, version 4 is installed as well.
That leads to believe that there must be a virus on this computer. Can one of you fine folks help confirm this?
I've read the forum stickies and have downloaded HiJackThis and have the other 2 notepad things (DDS and ATTACH) saved to my desktop. I'm trying to be somewhat detailed here, but my technical knowledge is lacking.
G'day, my mate gave me his laptop to speed it up a bit so I decided to format it with XP as it couldn't handle Vista very well.
I cannot find any drivers that will suit the audio device, I've installed multiple different drivers but none of them work and most of them return with the error:
The laptop is a Compaq Presario C700 model.
"Driver Installation Failed: Could not find the MEDIA device for this driver."
Device instance ID:
Can someone please suggest something I am out of ideas.
i was going to suggest going to the website for compaq and seeing if there are xp drivers for that model of computer if u havent tried that. if so i dont know what else u can try.hope this helps u.
Does anyone know for certain if you can install windows XP Professional on a Compaq Presario 5441? I was attempting to do a clean install but the setup process continues to fail. At some instances the comp freezes up when copying files over and during others we get a blue screen with various STOP errors including 0x0000000A, 0x00000050, etc.
I think, just from doing some basic research, that the Presario might not have the minimum specifications required to install Windows XP, Professional or otherwise. Check out this link and compare.
I would suggest simply buying a new computer though, seems the presario is a little dated. Do they even offer support for it anymore? I thought since Compaq was bought out they don't support their legacy systems anymore...

Try a power drain.
1. Unplug power cord
2. Hold power button in for 60 seconds or more then let go
3. Plug in power cord
4. turn on the power and try to boot to setup (BIOS)
If it enters the BIOS then you should be able to just press F5 to reset to defaults and then F10 to save and exit. The PC should work now.
However, if after the power drain you still can not get in the BIOS than there is a MAJOR problem which would require some type of repair.
i dont know anything about computers so i will need a detailed explanation and i need to know how to fix it!! it just stays on the compaq screen
Before the problem started was anything added to or installed on the system?
Try booting to Last Known Good or Safe Mode.
Restart the computer during the boot process repeatedly tap "F8" you should get
the Advanced Options.
Let us know if able to get the system to boot with either option.
I have compaq presario c700 laptop which has windows vista as inbuild OS. Due to many dll issues and corrupted directories , I changed it to windows 7, 3 months back. But my system is very slow and takes too much time. I want to change it to windows xp pro sp3.I learned from the internet that i have to disable sata native support from the BIOS. I did that, but when i try to restart ,the system doesnt ask 'press any key to continue boot....' It just goes blank screen ...nothing happens for hours. I am totally confused ....little help will be very grateful
In the BIOS . . does it have the option to boot from the CD?Read other 2 answers
My compaq laptop does not load the windows OS. First, when i was using my laptop, it shows the blue screen telling about physical memory dump error. After that i swithced it off. When i switch on the laptop again, it only display blank black screen. I repeat the same thing for some times for few days, it is still the same. So i decided to press F8 while it is booting and i go to 'Safe Mode', but still i only got the blank black screen. I tried to use the repair CD to repair, but it doesn't reboot from the CD. Its veri weird i think and 1 more think, the harddisk indicator light does not blink or turned on as usual. Could it be harddisk problem??? How to fix this problem?????
Welcome to Techspot.
You must try to get into your Bios setup screen. Machines are different ,but when you first push the On button you press F2 or something (check O/manual)
Once in Setup ,Look for Boot order and make sure CDrom is first. You should then be able to boot to your CD to reload O/S.
While you are in Setup check to see if the BIOS is recognizing the Harddrive. If it is not listed ,it may be the problem.
I would also recommend you go to the Compac web and Download all updated Drivers, Firmware and Software updates for your machine. You will need them handy at reload. Carefully read?printout all directions for system and file installs.
I am trying to recover a desktop computer and the recovery partition has failed. This seems to be a pretty bad virus and i am choosing to reinstall windows due to the lack of important data on the system.
The computer came with windows xp home and has a 15 digit key on the authentic windows sticker in the top.
Can someone please help me with my next move? Will a retail copy of xp home work with this or is the windows version specific to the manufacturer of the computer?
Many thanks for any help

Ok guys, im new here so i hope you can help me to figure this out.
I have been more than 3 days fighting with this an my options now are CERO. My problem:
Im formatting and reinstalling a fresh Windows XP on a Compaq Presario SR1923WM desktop, the first installation process that copies the files to the hard drive its fine, the problem starts when xp starts to install devices, it firstly was stopping at 35 minutes, i tried to find out the problem opening the setupapi.log, then i did erase the .inf causing the trouble and nothing. By the was i was using aXP version.
Then i tried with another disc, this time a Windows XP for HP machines, this times the minutes went down completely, the progress bar reached the 1% and then again showed me one gray screen and the system was hanging again.
Then, i figure out that the initial XP installed on the machine was the Windows XP Media Center Editio 2005, so i tried to install this with an OEM disc and then again it started to hang at 35 minutes.
I have tried other XP disc and nothing happens, i just can't get any OS installed on this PC.
Any help would be so much appreciated!
Sorry for my grammar im not native english speaker.
