I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi All, I have a T540p series laptop that has a free M.2 port (where the WWAN Card would have been if configured). I want to put a small 16GB or 32GB SSD that will be used for caching the standard 500GB HDD. Will this drive work as intended (MyDigitalSSD Super Boot Drive 42mm SATA III (6G) M.2 2242 NGFF SSD (16GB))???And does the M.2 port on the T540p support SATA or PCIe bus??? Just need a yes and which bus answers please.

Hi, A question or two for anyone that has the t540p. I have an SSD purchased for my t510 still and had intended to swap it over. Unfortunately I have met with immediate resistance from the machine itself. Following the instructions on the Lenovo site: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/pd029705 it suggests you: unscrew the back, remove a single screw inside and then slip the old drive out. Suffice to say that although the screws remove easily, the drive itself remains firmly in place. To my questions: has anyone successfully removed a HDD from a t540p? Did you have to apply much pressure to dislodge the drive? Does the piece of black plastic that surrounds the sides of the drive remove with the drive? Please can I see any photos/video of you removing the drive so I can check how you do it? The HDD is covered in a silver sliver, it looks as though there are two extra pieces of silver film covering maybe two screw holes, is the drive actually screwed in with more than the one screw suggested on the Lenovo site? Many thanks to anyone that can assist,Tom

Solved!

Go to Solution.

A:t540p hard drive replace

The plastic sleeve has four nibs that are pressed into the four screw holes on the side of the drive.  That's how it is attached to the drive.  The "silver film" is actually a metal tape.  It's sticky, but removable.  Once you've removed the screw, just lift up on the tab where the screw fastened the drive holder to the base.  With the screw out, the only thing holding the drive to the board is the SATA/power connector on the drive.  Lift by the tab, then pull the whole assembly away from the board. Peel the tape of gently--it will come off--so that you can put it back on the new drive.  The plastic holder pops off, one nib at a time.  Reverse your steps to install the new drive.

I have a T540p and for some time I've been using a hard drive caddy in the multibay with no problems. Recently I had to take the laptop apart to replace the fan, but since then, the laptop fails to see the caddy in Windows or in the BIOS.I've been back inside and reseated everything multiple time, I even bought a 2nd hand sister board to try out, but that had the same results. The BIOS got reset when I replaced the fan, so I'm not sure if I've done anything there. I've upgraded the BIOS and tried turning Intel Virtual tech, even disabling/enabling the I/O for the multibay. I've tested both hard drive caddies in a mac and they see the hard drive fine. Sadly I've lost the original DVD drive, so I can't test out with that. Any suggestions on what the problem is? Other then the hard drive caddy, the machine works fine.

I have a t540p 8gb mem and 256 gb SSD drive. Both are prooving to be to small. There is a bay above the card reader with a piece of plastic installed. Can I install an SSD SATA drive there ? If so what would the model no. be for 256gb SSD sata 3 Can I tell if i can add more memory ? thanksPhil

A:Add RAM and SSD to a t540p

RAM is easy.  The maximum is 2X8GB = 16GB.  You need low voltage (DDR3l) 1.35V.

You can replace your SSD with a larger one, but you have an additional option if you don't have a WWAN card.  I used a W540, which is similar, and I moved my boot drive to an M.2 drive in the WWAN slot.  You need to get a format 2242 (42mm) drive.  There are 256GB drives and also I think Transcend also makes 512GB drives in that format.  (TS512GMTS400)  The 2242 drives are less common than the more widely used 2280 drives.  II then put a large platter-based drive for data in the main HDD slot, keeping the boot data on the faster SSD.

T540P- yet another problem Laptop will not turn on with battery only, but this will happen randomly. Plugging it in will fix the problem, but sometimes I have to take the connector out and plug it back in again. I have received a new battery from Lenovo, but this has not solved the issues. Next step is probably to replace the motherboard. This laptop (T540P) is the worst one I have ever had, and I have owned probably 10 laptops in the last few years. Wifi Driver issues and touchpad issues (well documented) are much improved but there is no reason for the consumer to have this kind of ownership experience. Dock speaker buzzing issue still not resolved.

I am looking toi replace the Hard Drive to a 2 TB being the iamges take up alot of hd space. Unless there is one as a Recovery on the Hard Dtrive Now and how do I remove it / transfer it and get back and on to the Hard Drive so I can use this T540P Laptop? Just to know I am not much with Computers / Technology as to anything... I only use computers for personal use; emails, documents, online search and shopping. So please talk in low tech term as I have someone that can help a brother but it is an hour & half drive if it requires more technology knowledge... Where can I get a copy of the OS so I can change the Hard Drive Out? Only had the T540 maybe 6 months and filled up the 500 GB Twice and had to move the iamges to an external HD which is a pain when needing to go back and find a video ir two to review... Any information would be Helpful...Oneida101

You can call support and order media (for a charge) or make you own locally from the recovery image.  There are tools to do that in your existing Win 7 installation.

Hi everyone -  I have a Sierra EM7345 WWAN Card fitted to my T540p laptop and I know that the GPS is working as Google Map can locate the very room I am located in within my house.  I need to use the GPS to work with other mapping products. Namely Memory Map. But I am unable to locate the working COM Ports and settings to configure Memory Map to - which is a very easy process.  Can anyone help? Please! I am at my wits end and really need someones help. Thanks Simon

A:GPS not functioning on T540p

HiSolution depends on the OS running on the laptop, wwan card drivers installed (whether they are OS built-in or manufacturer's ones), modem configuration, your computing skills. As I understand, in case Lenovo (Sierra) drivers have been installed you didn't change any default installation settings. Please, confirm that. Also, check out Device Manager, Ports category. Is em7345 NMEA or AT port missing? The fastest way to resolve the task is to use the 3rd party driver to map location sensor to the virtual NMEA port. Also it's possible to use internal, built-in modem's capabilities to provide NMEA data. We'll do it after your answers.

I'm having a problem with my T540p. It is currently running Windows 10 (Non Insider Build), and is almost always running very hot . . . like, so hot it burns my legs through thick jeans. I periodically check the Task Manager to see if something is using a ton of the CPU, but everything seems normal. I don't even know what to do to fix this. Any ideas? Note: I've taken apart laptops before and the end result is ALWAYS something broken internally (i.e. a screw-hole breaks, or a snap-in clasp breaks, nothing vital but still) so I'm not very comfortable with taking apart my laptop to clean the fan or anything. Thanks,Joshua

Hello everyone, I have been trying to get Linux running correctly on my T540p without success so far.The issue is that the CPU keeps on overheating and then throttles itself.I haven't met this issue on Windows during the few months I've had the computer. I've spent a lot of time on this and worked with other people too, here's what came up: the CPU is constantly running at maximum clock speed, which generates more heat and thus triggers throttling. It also makes it use a lot more power, which drastically reduces battery life (from 6 to 2 hours). SpeedStep is properly set in the BIOS, and the BIOS itself is up to date.I have tried different Linux distributions (Debian, Ubuntu LTS, Archlinux). I've set up thermald, enabled the microcode updates, used intel_pstate, read the whole Archwiki page and basically tried all of it. Even using more "manual" modes such as acpi-cpufreq with "ondemand" doesn't help. The only thing that helped was manually setting the frequency to a low value, which increased the autonomy at the cost of performance. Having Linux running is essential for my professional work, and one of the reasons why I choose Lenovo.I would appreciate any help. Thanks for reading !

On 5/23 I sent my under-warranty T540p to repair a failing screen.  It was received by the depot on 5/24.  Almost two weeks later, support still has no ETA on when it will be repaired, and the repair status has been stuck on "Hold for customer information" since Friday 5/27.  When I first called, I was told this would be a quick repair.  Unless I can get this back soon, I'm going to be forced to by a new laptop (needless to say, it most certainly will not be a Lenovo).  What's the point of having a three-year warranty if it doesn't include even semi-timely repairs???

For the first time in a few months, I tried to listen to my laptop (a T540p running Windows 7 64-bit) via wired headphones...however my laptop is no longer able to detect my wired headphones when I plug them into the headphone jack.(Note that it has been a while since I've tried to use wired headphones so I don't know how long this has been going on...and I dropped my laptop between the last time it worked and now)(Also note that the headphones are brand new and work on other devices)That said, the moment I plug them in or unplug them, I hear the static I'd expect to hear, however the laptop just doesn't register that they're there. Even more puzzling, when I have my headphones plugged in when I start my computer, the audio PLAYS THROUGH THE HEADPHONES despite the tray icon saying it's playing through the speakers and the headphones still not being detected. The moment I unplug/plug them back in, it's the original issue (audio via speakers; headphones not detected) anew. The second thing is that an error pertaining to the Realtek Audio Plugin has just started occurring. T540P Windows 10 latest bios 2.33. I'm going in circles here on this issue.  When I'm plugged in, I throttle down to a crawl and the latop is almost unusable.  The instant I unplug my laptop from A/C, it immeditely goes back to full speed and everything works fine.  The battery is charging fine whie plugged in.  It behaves the same on the docking station (throttles).  I have read probably hundreds of posts online and have tried every possible answer and nothing has worked.  I have it set to high performance power mode, I've set my minimum/maximum cpu states to 100% and even tried throttlestop and it can't even seem to be able to stop the throttling (I could be using it wrong but I disabled all the throttling check boxes and it still throttles). I attached images to show my cpu state on both battery and A/C and my power plan settings.

Hi,

I searched this forum and the web and found nothing like the issue I got.

I have a 3 y. old T540p which just went out od the warranty a week ago.
I just noted that after the laptop wakes up from stand-by, the fan starts to run at a very high speed.
The system is not hot and the air coming out of the wents is cool. I am not playing videogames, etc.

The interesting thing is that if I run Lenovo hardware scan, it shows no problems and the fan speed goes down immediately after the scan is completed, so I cannot hear the fan at all unless I put my ear to the wents. AND the fan stays quiet no matter what I do after that- watch videos, youtube, etc.

Did anyone have a similar problem?
What was the soultion?
I feel that it is probably a SW problem since the fan speed goes down after the scan and stays down.

Hi everyone. It's been 10th day since I've started using this laptop and it is a 10th day of my nightmare. Speakers make constant white noise unless they are turned off or headphones are connected, CPU fan is very noisy and the touchpad is the worst I have ever used. Although I accepted the touchpad by simply disabling it, the CPU fan noise drives me crazy and makes this notebook unusable for me. The fan stays idle until the CPU reaches 55 ? - then the fan goes immediately to full speed and subsequently slows down to about 2000 rpm. Why it does so? Why is it idle instead of running silently at about 1500 rpm? If it has to be idle at low temperatures - why it doesn't go up slowly to 2000 rpm and stay a while at that speed after crossing the set point? It wouldn't produce that horrible noise. I found this problem discussed here https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/T530-Unbearable-fan-noise/ta-p/1159789 according to the solution I updated the bios and all - it hasn't helped!  There are some options to optimize fan speed using Power Manager but this software is not available for Windows 10. I have also tried tpfancontrol but it can't change the idle speed, and on speed level 1 the fan works at 2000~ rpm, which is a little bit too much.Do you have the same problems with your thinkpads? Have you found a solution? Lenovo seems to not care about the problems. Is it really that difficult to give users an option in BIOS t... Read more

Hi,I have a T540P onto which I recently installed a fresh copy of Win8.1 So far, mostly so good, but there is one nagging problem. The laptop is docked and hooked up to a Samsung 23" monitor and when I right click on the desktop and choose 'screen resolution,' the highest resolution that it will let me choose is 1280x1024. I want to set the resolution to 1920x1080. According to the device manager the display adapter is 'Intel(R) HD Grpahics 4600'. I tried updating that driver and the update was successful but it didn't seem to make any difference. I also downloaded and installed the Nvidia driver from the Lenovo support site but that also didn't help. Actually, though there were no errors, I still see the Intel HD Graphics driver in device manager so I'm no even sure if the NVidia driver was installed.Anyway, can anyone point me in the right direction here? Thanks!
