Exporting an Outlook 2002 e-mail list to Outlook Express

Q: Exporting an Outlook 2002 e-mail list to Outlook Express

I need to send an e-mail group list created in Outlook 2002 to a user who has Outlook Express (I think it's ver 5).

I tried exporting it as a .pst file but his computer opened it in Wordpad and garbled everything.

Is it OK to send it as a .pst file? If so, what's the proper way for the user to import the e-mail list onto their computer?

If .pst files aren't the way to go, what is the best export/import process?

I recommend downloading and running Outlook PST Repair. It's a PST repair tool that I've used it in the past to recover emails, contacts, tasks and notes from corrupt Outlook files that are damaged or inaccessible. Supports Outlook 2000, 2002, 2003, 2007, 2010 and 2013.

You can download it direct from this link http://goo.gl/1bjhSi. (This link will automatically start a download of Outlook PST Repair that you can save to your computer.)

(1) I need to move OE mail messages from one computer to another. I am confident that my issue is not the first time this has come up.

Please refer me to the article/discussion where direction has been given to the expoting and importing of OE mail messages.

(2) I have the dbx files saved from an installation of about 6 months ago (including the 'folders.dbx file) and I cannot get these files imported.

(3) How can I import a single message folder, like the 'Inbox' from one computer to another? If this can be done, and I import the inbox.dbx file into another computer that also has an inbox.dbx file, will the imported file replace the file that is resident? Will the names of the mail folders imported have to be changed to be different from those that are resident on the computer to which the importation process is to take place?

Thanks.

A:Exporting Email accounts from Vista to Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express

Hello again kapilkaaiser,
I think you need to import the required info into Outlook 2007 -

In Outlook 2007, click File > Import and Export > Make the appropriate choices
> & hopefully the Import / Export Wizard will oblige.

Post back with your results.

I mainly use Outlook 2000, however, in order to get a number of Hotmail messages onto my computer's HD, i synchronised Outlook Express with Hotmail. I now have messages from a folder I have on Hotmail on my hard drive too.

A search revealed that this folder (and presumably all messages in it) is stored under C:\Windows\Application Data\Identities\{00B31680-0793-11D3-A398-C0610D677E39}\Microsoft\Outlook Express.

I copied the .dbx file named hotmail - [folder name].dbx to my desktop. I went in to Outlook 2000 file>import blah blah blah, but it wont let me import .dbx files

soooooo.....is there anyway to get my messages from hotmail from this specific folder into outlook 2000? i no longer need the folder in hotmail and will just delete it as soon as i have a permanent copy on my hard drive in outlook 2000. im assuming that since the dbx file is on my hard disk with all the messages (which i can read offline in outlook express) that i wont need to set up outlook 2000 for hotmail synchronisation ?!?

I am trying to export a contact list from Outlook (version 2002, sp2) into an Excel spreadsheet. The export process is pretty straightforward, but examination of the resulting spreadsheet shows that updates made in Outlook are often not expressed in the export. For one contact, I made a change to his email address some six months ago; yet when I exported this information, it reverted to his previous address. The same problem tends to occur with exporting to other file formats as well, including PST and Access Database (.MDB) files.

It seems like a buffer somewhere isn't getting flushed properly. Microsoft encrypts its PST files so there's not really a way to see what's going on inside. Does anyone know how to deal with this issue? I haven't found anything yet in Microsoft's knowledge base.

I'm trying to read the e-mails from my old Windows 98 computer on my current Windows XP computer but I haven't been able to figure out how to successfully do this. The e-mail client on the Windows 98 machine was Outlook Express 6 and the one on my current XP computer is Outlook 2002.

I followed the instructions listed on the Microsoft support site (Article ID: 270670) for backing up the data from Outlook Express which left me with a folder of .dbx files (Inbox.dbx, Drafts.dbx etc) which I then burned onto a CD and transferred over to my XP computer. My problem is that now that I've done that I'm not sure how to get Outlook 2002 to import that folder of .dbx files or recognize it. I googled it but didn't find any helpful results other than links to expensive conversion programs. So could anyone here offer any help on the matter? Thanks in advance.

A:How do I import messages from Outlook Express 6 into Outlook 2002?

Update: I realized that Outlook can't open the .dbx files and that Outlook Express has to export them to Outlook. However, when I tried this it only exported the messages in my "Sent" folder and none of the messages in any of the other folders, including Inbox.dbx which is about 500MB in size so I know the messages are in there. Any advice on what to do next?

I have searched and found a slight answer to this question (which seems to be "no way"), and have searched many other forums for information, however . . . thought I'd post it here too to see if there is any new info on this problem.

In Outlook Express, I can view .any single contact's membership in various groups/distribution lists on the "other" tab . However, in OE I cannot sort or view this information in very meaningful ways, nor view those various memberships in any of the main contact pane views.

In Outlook 2000, by sharing the OE address book, I can view and sort much contact information in more meaningful ways, but there seems to be NO way to see how many distribution lists/groups a single contact belongs to.

SURELY SURELY SURELY there must be a code or patch to create a field to show this info in Outlook 2000! If anyone has a hint -- even a book to refer me to that I would wade through (and I would), please repond.

Thanks for the help

I don't like this import export stuff anyway. Just find the address book in windows explorer, right click it, send to floppy.
Stick floppy in new computer and drag address book back to where it lives on new computer, replace exisiting, yes (as long as there are no addresses in there), copy and paste to the floppy first if there areor vice versa depending how many addresses.

Hey all. I think I know how to do this, but let me double check before I wipe my laptop's hard drive and reinstall Windows 2000.

First off, I should tell you that the reason I am wiping is because it has 98 and then 2000 on top of it...and it runs so slow!

But anyway, I have old email files saved to my AOL Filing cabinet in Windows 98 (AOL 7.0 I believe). I need those emails saved so that I don't loose them. I notice in AOL 8.0 there is a "backup" feature. Does anyone know if this feature is available in 7.0 and if it will restore my whole filing cabinet for that particular screen name.

Also, I assume that will work with my 8.0 emails in 2000...just send that backup file across the network to one of my other PC's for holding, and then format and "restore" from backup when I am done...I won't loose any emails will I?

Also, recently a user here has been using Outlook Express for emails, but they dont like it. I suggested Mozilla Mail, but they didn't like that because it didn't have a spell check. So I suggested Netscape which has a spell check, and they said OK.

Is there a way to export my Outlook messages and import into Netscape? I don't know if they have an address book or not, but is it possible to do that also?

I know a lot of questions and text.

Thanks In Advance

-Mark

*EDIT* Also, how would I import them into Mozilla mail?

Hello,

I have a computer with Windows XP and have used Outlook Express 6 for many years as my e-mail client.  Recently I tried to export my files and folders to Microsoft Outlook on the same computer, so that I could save the PST file and move it to a new computer with Windows 7 and Microsoft Outlook.  I did this successfully 6 months ago but kept using my old computer.

Unfortunately this time there seems to have been a corruption in the export process, as the PST is corrupt.  I tried to use Microsoft's Fix it tool but it did not work.  Furthermore, now everytime I start Outlook Express, I get the message "address book failed to load.  Outlook Express is incorrectly configured, etc."

I can still see all my messages and folders in Outlook Express, but if I click on a message to open it I get "there was an error opening this message.  An error has occurred."  I tried deleting the wab but that didn't work.  I tried re-exporting the files to Outlook but that didn't work either.

It seems like maybe there is a conflict between Outlook Express and Outlook, but I don't know how to resolve it.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The files you are looking for are in a folder called Outlook Express and will have the extensions .dbx

They will be in a directory path similar to the one I've include below except for the number enclosed in braces. If you don't find a path similar then just do a search for the directory Outlook Express.

C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR USER NAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{F71B2263-58F5-45EF-8A2D-B337C0C73961}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Just replace the .dbx files on the new machine with the .dbx files from the old machine.

OutlookExpress has pretty easy Help instructions to follow regarding Import/Export. Try this

Start OEX and click on Help>Contents and Index>Search, key in Export and then click on "Find Topics". Then click on the topic your interested in.

If that doesn't help, <a href=http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q270670&> this <a/> MS article explains it in detail. And obviously when following those instructions, you want to be saving the files to a floppy diskette.

Folks I have read the MS tech notes on how to get Outlook 2003 [I have it via Office 2003 Professional, full install] to import from OE6. It fails under either option: import from "another program" or "Import Internet Mail....". Under the former it is pointed to the correct folder, but fails with Error: Cannot open,.. another program in use" but there's not... I tried copying the folder to a nice clean location on the C: and checked all the properties, nothing interfering, still won't open the folder.
Under the latter option it just doesn't do anything after directing it to the correct folder. Seems to accept the command, closes the window, but does not import anything. No error messages.

Umm.... do MS teams communicate with one another??

Closely related: If I could just get the FOLDERS I had setup it would be a great asset, or if i could just get the ADDRESS book it would help. Do you know how to import *.dbx folders into Outlook 2003? Or the old outlook Express address Book?

I recently bought a new computer with Windows XP and Office 2002.

I successfully transfered data for contact folders. When creating distribution lists, I noticed that in the distribution list, the "NAME" column listed the e-mail addresses as did the "EMAIL ADDRESS COLUMN"

Yet the fields in my contact address books are all correctly filled in (just as I had in Outlook 98)

Now the distribution list works, but it is annoying to not be able to see names so I can keep the list updated. A number of the e-mail addresses are difficult to decipher.

I have gone to Microsoft - do details on sorting the fields within the distribution list. Microsoft won't talk to me because software was OEM with Dell. Dell says they don't support software. No documentation I have looked for addresses this issue. It is frustrating. Anyone with a solution??

In the words of a famous politician "I feel your pain".

I think Outlook Express was wheeey easier. I dunno how I got roped into Outlook other than its got some god features like calendar that you dont have to revert to another calender for (eg everything is supoededly in one place)

Also I think its bogus how MS shifts the blame to others. MS made teh softwere the dealer only sells it. If you blow up a tire on your GM car, you can still talk to Firestone about it.

In business, obviously large companies only want to sell more stuff they realise that fixing stuff is generally costing them money (unless you pay for it).

Anyway, I have a office Im associated with. Most people dont go there so we all use outlook.

In the "contacts area" under "actions" you can see "create new distribution list:

Under select members you should be able to highlight the ones you want in that list.

Then, when you want to send to those, you type the group name and it send to all of them.

To review them you can go back to the original box and add, delelte, or modify them.

Lemme know if that helps.

best,

Greetings beginners and gurus...

I am running Outlook 2000 on our network (Windows NT); I read my mail on my (XP) machine using my default inbox, then I open the 'general' mailbox using open>other inbox. Works fine except that there is no folder list at all, and no way that I can see to enable the list. Nothing under 'view' menu and the permissions seem to be set correctly on the server's Exchange System Manager. I took over this duty from another employee who also had their inbox and the general inbox accessible from their workstation....but they had the folder list option. This is incredibly aggravating because I can't view 'sent mail,' etc. And yet in my own Outlook, everything is as it should be.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated; also, please let me know if I provided incomplete/incorrect information or if I am asking the question incorrectly.

Thanks!

Does anyone know how I can set up a distribution list in Outlook 2002 so that recipients can see only the name of the distribution list in the TO box and not the names of the list members? I think that this is a new Outlook 2002 feature.

A:Outlook 2002 Distribution List

Generally, everyone puts "themselves" in the TO box, and the distribution list goes into the BCC.

Hi,
There isn't any way currently to import mail directly from Outlook to Windows Live Mail so you have to do it indirectly BEFORE installing Windows 7.

1) even if you don't use Outlook Express (XP) or Windows Mail (VISTA) you need to have them running on the same machine as your copy of OUTLOOK.

2) create (if you haven't already) email accounts in OE or Windows mail identical to those you have in Outlook.

3) Now import your messages from Outlook into OE or Windows Mail.

4) Change the Store Identity in OE or Windows mail to a disk that your Windows 7 can read (do this under Maintenance - data storage locations in OE or Windows Mail).
Doing this saves you having to install Live Mail on Vista or XP

5) Logon to your Windows 7 system and install Windows Live mail.

6) Set up your email accounts

7) File ==> import==>messages

8) Chose Outlook express or Windows mail depending on step 3)

9) Browse to the directory where you stored the messages in step 4)

10) Job done.

A bit fiddly but obviously MS don't want to make it easy for people to switch from Outlook

Note also the "Send and Receive" function is calles "SYNC" in Windows Live mail -- confusing but there it is.

If you also installed Windows Messenger you can prevent it from starting automatically at startup by going to the Orb ==>acessories==>run. type msconfig and unclick windows messenger in the start up box.

There doesn't appear to be ANY method of im... Read more

I recently put a coply of MS Office 2013 onto a friends computer for them and set up outlook and I cannot get it to export my email from Windows live mail. I have Outlook set as the default mail client and have exhausted the how to on the microsoft help site (used instructions from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/980534 ) nothing worked.

I keep getting an error message stating that MAPI isn't setup properly and that I have to set outlook to be the default mail client before it will complete. I have done this and still keep getting the same message. I have also tried exporting the messages in their native formal *.fol but Outlook won't read them. (why MS insists on not building easy portability between its own programs in areas like this is beyond my scope of comprehension or why it cares if I have Outlook installed on that particiular machine or not what if a user wants to put the messages onto another machine that doesn't have live mail on it only Outlook????)

Griping aside I either need a program that can convert the exported *.fol files into a readable *.pst file or compatible format or troubleshoot why live mail isn't seeing that "yes in fact I do have Outlook installed and yes it is set as the default mail client both from Outlook itself and from checking the default program list, I set every file type I could see as default to Outlook and still nothing.

Thanks for your help you guys have never let me down.

Hello,

I am running MS Outlook 2002 (SP3 installed) on Windows XP. Whenever I open Outlook, the following message appears once for evey contact I have in my contact list "A program is trying to access e-mail addresses you have stored in Outlook. Do you want to allow this? If this is unexpected, it may be a virus and you should choose 'No'."

I currently have an account set up where there are no entries in my contact list and the issue does not exist. However, as soon as I add a contact the message appears. If I add two contacts, I get two messages, etc.

Any suggestions on how to resolve this? I am currently running a small program called ClickYes which automatically clicks the "Yes" button to allow access whenever the aforementioned message pops up. I recognize that this is merely a band-aide approach and was hoping that there would be something more permanent available. Any thoughts?

A:Outlook 2002 Contact List Locks Up

It sounds like you need to reinstall it. All of your email, contacts, calendar entries, folders, etc. are all kept in one file called outlook.pst so backing it up isn't that difficult.

As an alternative, you might go into task manager and disable some of the other programs running in the background on your computer to see if they are interfering with Outlook in some ways. Programs like firewalls, antivirus, antispyware, and antispam programs are especially suspect. Shut them down, one at a time, and try Outlook and see if it does any better.
