Computers turn itself off, now won't turn on...help!

Q: Computers turn itself off, now won't turn on...help!

I left my computer (tower) on for a couple of hours whilst I wasn't in the room. When I returned it had switched itself off, and there was a slight burnt out smell coming from it.
It now will not turn on

Have changed the power lead- still won't turn on

Any ideas??

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

Both comps are about 2 years old. Here are the specs I know:

Cisnet
Win Xp
512mb
80gb ram
Pentium 4 cpu

It was randomly shutting off sometimes... maybe once every few weeks. Finally it just went off and never came back on. Each time it went off, I would have to wait longer and longer to be able to turn it back on. Now, when it is plugged in, there are 2 green lights constantly flashing, but I cannot get the computer to start. Any Ideas? Motherboard, power supply?
I don't want to pay someone $100 to fix it or more.... so I want to do it myself.

Other computer specs:

Gateway GT4010 Media Center Edition
Win XP
1gb dual-channel memory
200gb ram
AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3500+
Nvidea 6200
9 in one digital memory card reader
Double-layer 16x dvd Burner

This one just won't turn on. Occasionally when I plug it in, the fan will work. Others it is completely dead, nothing running and no lights at all. Any ideas?

Once we get this squared away.. I have an older iMac I need help with =)

I know a lil bit about computers - I used to work at CDW... but please be gentle with me!

Thanks!

A:2 computers that won't turn on =(

Open up both boxes and check for bad or swollen capacitors.

On the Cisnet, i suspect the CPU is overheating and shutting down. To fix this, you would need to take the heatsink/fan off the CPU and reseating it using Arctic Silver Thermal Paste on the CPU. You can Google for instructions on how to use Arctic Silver.

On the Gateway, test the power supply unit. If you have a spare PSU, try it.

If you could get both of these machines fixed for $100, jump on it.

We have two new computers = Alienware 17 R4 and XPS AIO 27 7760. Is it better for the overall performance and life of the computers to leave them on all day or turn them on and off as needed - maybe three to four times in a typical day? I am aware of the sleep functions but others in the household mistake sleep for off and use the on/off button which I fear will cause an improper shut down.

A:Leave computers on all day or turn on/off

Turn off (or allow to go to sleep) when not needed -- notebooks (and all in ones, which are more like notebooks inside than desktops) are not designed for 24/7 duty cycles.

I don't know whether this would matter If I'm asking this question In a windows 7 forum \ Linux forum whatever but I am running 7.

Say If I open up my desktop computer and do something\add something to the wireing of the power button , would I then be able to turn my computer with A wireless controller or even from my portable laptop that I use by clicking an aplication on my desktop that will then turn on my desktops power.

Is anything or has anyone ever made this possible?

Hello, first of all thanks for viewing!

I work for a few schools as there IT Technician/Network Administrator, At one of my schools they had some computers that wouldnt turn on (5 in total) So i tried and tested a few things, and eventually put it down to the Power Supply units (as this school isnt great with IT and have no surge breaker, aprently theres not enough budget) anyway, i asked them to order in 5 PSU and gave them the details, i came in yesterday and replaced all 5 of the power supplys and dumped the old ones. After this i tested them all and they were working fine, so i installed Faronics Deep Freeze Enterprise to stop the kids changing there desktop/mouse settings.

I come back into work today and im told that 2 of the computers wont turn on, So far i have checked all the connections inside to make sure we have no loose ones, i also tried a different power lead even though i knew it wasnt that because we have splitters and the moniter is on. There computers are supplied by NEC (with MS-7295 v1.0 mobos) both of the computers are the ones i replaced power packs in just yesterday.

Any help or advice is apprieciated!

Thanks in advanced

Hi. This is a weird situation. Today I brought home a new computer, put it on my desk next to my old computer (both are desktops) and started installing OS on the new one. I disconnected mouse, keyboard and monitor from the old one and connected them to the new one and turned it on. Everything worked fine except for the keyboard for some reason so I had to insert the Windows product key via virtual keyboard, no biggie. I started the OS install and while it was installing I wanted to do something on the old one so I disconnected the three peripherals from the new one and connected them back to the old one. Both mouse and keyboard weren't working, only the monitor was. So I pressed the hardware shutdown button on the old one's case (which I have set up to put the computer to hibernation) but it never turned off. And now either of the computers won't display anything at all on the monitor. I checked for proper connection, everything's connected properly (computer, monitor, powergrid). I tried another monitor with another cables as well (DVI and VGA), it isn't working either. And none of the computers can be turned off through the hardware shutdown button. I don't want to disconnect them from electricity just yet as I don't want to interrupt the new one's OS install and I have some unsaved stuff on the old one. Any idea what's going on please?

A:No monitors suddenly working; can't turn computers off

Sometimes VGA monitors on old systems been giving minor issues due to hot-swapping. But nothing major, that wouldn't be fixed with a reboot. Did you use usb keyboard/mouse?

With the OS install it'd faster to power PC off, reconnect monitor and input devices and reinstall OS properly.

Do you have remote desktop or something similar enabled on old PC?

Ad-Hoc requires that you restart the session each time.

Connectify pro has an auto start option that does this but it's a paid version, connectify lite is free but I'm not sure if has auto start.

I have a bit of a strange issue with my computer. Forgive me if I'm a little too descriptive, but I'm not sure which details are relevant and which are not for such a problem. First, the specs:

Model: eMachines T2984
Operating System: Windows XP Service Pack 2
Processor: Intel Celeron D Processor 340, 2.93 GHZ, 256K L2 Cache, 533 MHZ FSB
Power Supply Unit: Bestec Model: ATX-250-12E REV: P7
Motherboard: I can't tell, but it appears to be an Intel motherboard by the number of Intel labels on it
RAM: 512 MB DDR SD originally, added 1 GB a couple of months ago
Let me know if you need anything else...

Yesterday, I got home from shopping around 1PM, and I tried to start the computer. I pushed the power button, and nothing happened. I checked all of the cords, and they were all plugged in. Not knowing what else to do, I opened up the case to see if there was something obviously wrong. The only thing that I noticed (other than a bunch of dust) was that the power supply unit was still hot. I shut the computer down about 5 hours earlier after about 20 minutes of use, so it seemed strange that the power supply was still hot. I unplugged the computer just in case there was some sort of fire hazard.

At this point, I called a friend who suggested that the problem might be with the motherboard or the power supply unit.

A few hours later, I plugged it back in to try to get it to work. As soon as I plugged it in, the entire unit suddenly started "running" by itsel... Read more

I would suspect that the Power Supply Unit (PSU) is going south. If you have a spare one laying around, install it and see if the problem goes away.
You can buy a new, better PSU from Newegg for about $40.00. I have used a Thermaltake 430 watt in one of my machines for some time now and it works well.
You will have to check the size of your PSU to be sure a new one will fit into the eMachine.
Here's the page with that PSU on it. It's the last one on the list.

So I have already tried the solutions such as boot up the pc and press shift and such to get a menu and then download somthing on a usb and get into an administrator account. The Administration account I can at least log onto as it's not password protected but I still can't turn on Wi-Fi which basically defeats my whole purpose of using the computer as I use it for gaming. So regarding me not being able to log into my actual account, I've tried resetting my password multiple times without success. I think it's due to the fact that I am not able to connect to any Wi-Fi spots (which I assume is because of safe mode which I can't turn off for some reason) And that brings me to my next point, of I can't connect to Wi-Fi die to safe mode. I have tried to turn off safe mode in the settings but when I press the button for it to turn off it slides back over to the on side. Please let me know if you have any other solutions that I have not tried yet, Thanks !

Display turns off after about fifteen minutes regardless of whether I am actively using the computer or not. The only way to turn the display back on is to close and then open the lid. This disconnets me from AOL, so I have to sign back on again, and if I was emailing, I might lose my current email.

Under Power Options, I have 'Turn off the display' set to Never for both On Battery and Plugged in. Under 'Put the computer to sleep' I have both On battery and Plugged in set to never. Nonetheless, the display still shuts off while I am working.

What do I need to do to prevent the display from turning off at odd intervals?

Hello Folks,

I'm not sure if my issue is with hardware (possibly MB?) or graphics card, so please forgive me if I've posted in the wrong section. The first problem I was having was random blue screens of death that displayed graphic card driver issues. I was able to remedy that by updating my graphic drivers and have not had an issue since.

However, ever since then I have been running into another hardware or graphics-related issue that is random and completely stumping me. What is happening is, I will be on my computer, leave and turn my monitor off, and (randomly) when I come back to use my computer again, when I turn on the monitor there is no signal and a black screen (e.g. when I turn my monitor on my desktop will pop up and the light on my monitor will turn blue, when it doesn't turn on there will be a black screen and the light on the monitor stays yellow as if it is idle). I have tried swapping out the monitor to see if that was the issue and the same problem persists, so it does not appear to be my monitor or VGA cables.

The only way I can temporarily fix this issue is to reboot/restart my computer and viola! The monitor works again and I can see everything. This issue is very random. Sometimes I can go weeks without an incident, other times this is happening a couple times a week. I honestly don't know if it's my motherboard or video card or what. My PC isn't overheating, I'm not overclocking, and all of my drivers are updated.

I can't turn my computer on. The fans and lights turn on for a second and then turn off. a few seconds later they'll turn back on and then turn back off. I've had this computer for 4+ months now, i built it myself. it recently started doing this but i'd just turn off the PSU (Power Supply Unit) and turn it back on and it woould fix it. now it doesnt fix it anymore. i've re-slotted the RAM (Random Access Memory) and pushed it in firmly, but that hasn't done anything. i've tried different power outlets and pushed everything into the MOBO (Motherboard), i havent messed around with CPU (Processor) because that's just a pain in the a**... i was wondering if there was anything else i could do before having to take it into a local repair shop, lol.

as for my computer specs

GPU: R9-270x AMD

MOBO (Motherboard): ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0
PSU (Power Supply Unit): Corsair X500 w 80+
Case: Rosewill GALAXY

thanks

A:Fans turn on, lights blink and then turn off/on repeatedly.

First, I would unplug everything that isn't necessary. Everything external except for the keyboard and monitor. Internally, just leave the CPU, RAM and video card installed. See if it turns on. If not, you might try and test the power button. Disconnect the power button from the mobo. If the pin headers allow for it, use the reset button as the power button. If not, you can use a flat head screwdriver to power on the computer (cross the two pins for the power button with the blade of the screwdriver). If you do this, just be very careful. Touch only the power button pins and nothing else! You could easily damage components by touching the screwdriver to the wrong thing.

Some motherboards have a power button right on the board that you can press to power on the computer. I looked at a pic of your board and didn't notice one.

If that doesn't do it, plug the power button back in. You might try and play around with the RAM. I don't know if you have 2 or 4 sticks of RAM, but try and boot the computer with only one stick of RAM at a time. If there's a bad stick, you'll find it through this process of elimination.

If none of the above works, then it might be a bad PSU.

If I unset "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" on the Power Management tab of my USB Root Hub properties, then when I attempt to restart my computer from the Start Menu, Windows shuts down but the computer itself keeps running,
i.e. the power light stays lit and the fan continues to run. In order to actually shutdown, I have to press the power button for a few seconds. Upon reboot, there is no indication of a failed shutdown from Windows. However, I am able to shutdown from the Start
Menu without problem.
Is this really the intent of not allowing the computer to turn off a device connected to a USB port, i.e. you can shutdown but you can't restart? Seems a bit arbitrary to me.

Good day!

My cousin asked me to troubleshoot the problem of his desktop. He was telling me that it is not turning on. I was caught by surprise when i turned on the PC when suddenly I heard some kind of explosion. It sounds like a blown capacitor or something to that effect. I immediately unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. I checked all the capacitors and looking for any damage and fortunately it's all ok. I smell the PSU to check if there's any short circuit occured and there was no foul odor or something. I removed the PSU from the casing for and opened it for inspection. I found out that the fuse exploded and broke into 2 pieces. I don't bother to repair it but instead I bought a new 700 watts PSU.

After replacing the PSU I turned on the PC but i found out that the CPU fan will spin for half a second and turn off. Led green light is on but no post or beep sound. I did some troubleshooting and these are as follows:

1. I removed the motherboard from the casing and put it on top of the table with cardboard underneath.
2. Clean the RAM stick and tried on other slot.
3. Clean CPU heatsink and fan since it was clogged by dirt and replace thermal paste.
4. Replaced the CMOS battery and move jumper pin 1-2 to 2-3 for about 2 minutes.
5. I turn on the PC without the video card, hardisk and keyboard.

I am using a client computer that is connected to a modem via a LAN cable which is in a neighboring house as far as about 50 meters. The host computer is there. Within this network there are only two computers, the one I use (as client) in my house and the other one is the host computer as I mentioned earlier.

How do I know that the host computer is being turned on or off?

The purpose is to know so that I can use all the bandwidth from the modem when the host computer is not turn on. Because there are no restrictions on bandwidth from the host computer, and I just wanted to use all the available bandwidth only when the host computer is not turned on.

Both computers use Windows 7.

Video: youtube.com/watch?v=UbuFZJQnlds

As you can see the PSU, CPU, and Case fans are turning on and the Motherboard LED lights are blinking and then they quickly turn off. I dont think its a problem with the Power Supply because I have already returned one with the same issue thinking it was defective.

wont let me post pictures =/

Any help is appreciated, thanks for your time!

Hello everyone, I have an HP Envy j100t which I purchased in 2014. ever since yesterday it's been starting but the screen remains pitch black, no display at all. It won't get to start up page, just remains a blank dark screen even though the power light is on and there's no battery issue because it was on charge all night and the AC adopter is still in.   I keep on having to get to get to the BIOS recovery screen, letting that update, and then it proceeds to restart. However when it restarts, it never gets to start up and there is the same dark screen- no display.  I have to always update BIOS, take out the battery and AC adapter, put them back in, and then it will start. Or sometimes even that whole process might not restart it.  Please help!

In the last couple of months we have begun seeing some of our secure sites failing in IE. Many will work in Chrome or in Firefox, as a business standard we prefer IE.  The SSL is off by GPO. TLS 1.1 and 1.2 are on (TLS 1.0 is off for a reason-but
had this problem even before the change.) Have turned off and back on by GPO and still have issue.  We do not want to turn back the clock and use SSL (nor would our auditors permit it). Any suggestions?

Hello i've Toshiba C55-B5302 when i try to turn on and then turn off again. You can turn on the laptop as normal. The LED lights on the laptop light up, but once this is done, the laptop just runs for 5 seconds and it automatically shuts off again. You can hear the fan run for a while but other that it just turns off. So what is the cause for a problem like this? i've dissasemly it and clean the fan there's no dust, i've remove the battery and keep the power button for 60sec read it on other forum, press many times the power button without the battery and the charger to reset the bios info, but without any luck.
Cheers

after serching all night to find out why his computer is in limbo, i leave my brother's house without finding needed help. his computer won't turn off...the fan, a couple little lights until he unplugs it from the wall. first, the computer did a restart all by itself, he said, then it would not turn on, except the fan and little lights inside that won't turn off. he took out the hard drive and it functions in his other computer...he puts the hard drive back into the new computer and it will not turn on or completely turn off that fan. he tried the "hold the on/off button for at least five seconds" step and nothing changes. he has had the computer for a year and a half, so he really wants to figure this out. how can he even get it to turn on so he could do a safe start up? so far we cannot find a way to troubleshoot. he have checked the cords, perhaps there was a freeze up that began this loop and that's why the fan stays on? please say this is something you have heard of and there may be a solution. the advice we have found usually goes back to buying a new computer. thanks in advance, tea

A:what's a girl to do when her computer won't turn off, or turn on?

Welcome to TechSpot

I'd unplug all drives and add-on cards (such as soundcard if there is one), and try booting then.

This just started happening. My T420s won't turn on using ON button -- it blinks a bit but nothing happens -- but it will turn on if I push and hold down the down-arrow button. The only problem is I have to keep holding the down-arrow button down. As soon as I lift off the down-arrow button it crashes. Wierd I know. Any ideas? I mainly want to use this laptop in the expansion tray with an external monitor so I am thinking of trying to put a pad on the down arrow button that a closed top will hold down but this is a bit of a kluge...

A:T420s won't turn on using ON button but will turn on if I push and hold down arrow button

OK ... first I gotta know .... what made you try holding down the down-arrow key?    Does the T420s have the "paper clip reset" hole on the bottom? This is the procedure for an X1:  https://is.wfu.edu/help-articles/hard-reset-for-lenovo-x1-carbon/ My T440s and T480 both have the hole....the hole is not in the same place on all the machines of course, but you get the idea.Or maybe you already tried this trick?

Dell Dimension 4100 PIII 866 MHz, XP Pro, NViIDIA GeForce MX 440

This is my problem: I have the power saving settings set to turn off my monitor after 20 min. It does briefly turn off, only to turn on again 1 sec. later, displaying a faint very dark blue screen... It used turn off fine, but after upgrading from Windows 98SE to XP Pro I got this problem. Is this the OS or my video card?

Any clues?

Thanks all

A:"Turn monitor off" setting doesn't really turn off

Did you upgrade to XP right over the top of 98 or was it a clean install? If you did an upgrade over the top of 98 (and I know you don't want to hear this lol) then you should format and do a clean install. Upgrades rarely leave you with a stable system.

Things to try before you do that though:

1) Make sure your video card drivers are up to date.

2) Make sure Windows is updated - go to windowsupdate

3) try the system file checker (Start, Run, "sfc /scannow" [without the quotes]) to make sure your system files are intact.

Other than that I would say just do a format and install XP from scratch (to be honest, you should do this anyway if you haven't already, you'll get much better stability and performance).

How to turn windows firewall off? I can't click the Turn Windows Firewall On or Off

A:How to turn windows firewall off? I can't click the Turn Windows Firew

This may have been disabled on your computer, particularly if you are in a Domain (e.g.: at work, in a library, etc).

However assuming that you have Administrator rights to your computer you should be able to turn it on and off by going to Start > Control Panel > Windows Firewall > Turn Windows Firewall on or off.

If you cannot turn the Firewall off through the above approach try the following Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services

Looks for the 'Windows Firewall' Service, double click it, then click on 'Stop'.

From within the Service properties you can also stop the Firewall from starting with Windows, etc.

Hi,

I've set Turn off the display setting in my power plan to 15 minutes and my monitor does turn off after that period (sometimes it doesn't!), but then, sometimes, it turns ON by itself after few minutes.

I've been Google-ing these days trying to find some solution and I came across suggestions which recommends that Allow this device to wake the computer option, located in the Power management tab, in the Properties window of the network adapter, in the Device manager, should be disabled. Also, there were suggestions that Wake on Magic packet property in the Advanced tab should be disabled, too. Unfortunately, all that did not work in my case.

Does somebody know what can cause this problem? Has anyone ever encountered such phenomena?

Thanks in advance.

A:Monitor turn on by itself after "Turn off the display" starts

Hello alokin87 & welcome to Sevenforums,

Sometimes the computer Wake from standby because of a program's updating itself. Sometimes it does wake, sometimes it does not!

Therefore it could be the Windows Media center as explained in this Hotfix from MS. You could give a try:

http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-u...ly-2010-a.html

Look at post #1:

"-Do you find that your Windows 7 Computer wakes up from sleep unexpectedly at a particular time every day? If so then you might to check up if any scheduled tasks are waking your PC up."

I had heard that it is best for your computer when it is left on all the time. So I don't let it go on stand-by either. I just use the screensaver. Is this true?

Hi @Fedor_Alabiev!

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums.

If the computer stops responding and you cannot turn it off by pressing the power button, remove the ac power adapter and insert a straightened paper clip into the emergency-reset hole to reset the computer.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
