HDD Disk Numbers differ and change from BIOS Port numbers (2)

Q: HDD Disk Numbers differ and change from BIOS Port numbers (2)

This was asked before by KlausdB:

"I have 4 x HDDs on SATA AHCI (Intel Controller) in Native Mode and 1 x ESATA on Win 7 Pro X64.
I noted that looking in Admin. Tools\Computer Management\Storage (as an example) the 1st HDD (Port 0 in the AHCI BIOS) is showing as "Disk 2" instead of my expectation of

"Disk 1".
Selecting the Drive's Properties correctly shows the "Location 0 (Channel 0, Target 0, Lun 0)".
I also note that the Disk Number allocation in Windows will change randomly after some reboots/startups - going anywhere from "Disk 1" to "Disk 4". I can force/replicate this

behaviour by removing the ESATA drive.
Is this expected behaviour?
It doesn't appear to create any operating issues at this stage, however, is there a way I can force the Drive to always map to (eg) Device 0 --> Disk 1, Device 1 --> Disk 2,

etc?
Thanks."

This was answered by Nicholas Li:

"As far as I know, how the disk is plugged physically and the order it is displayed are not related. For a simple example, if a drive is plugged to SATA interface 4 and it is the only disk, it will be displayed as Disk 0. If there is no related issue about
the disk order, I think we can safely ignore this."

Because the topic was closed I want to ask a new question here:
What happens if one of the 4 HDD drives or 5 has an OS installed on it? I ask because windows always write some boot sectors on the first sectors of the first HDD, so, if my OS HDD although it is in BIOS on SATA 0 in windows it is on SATA 4, is this mean
that other HDD drive will take the boot info's so that when I'll replace that drive the windows will no longer boot?

Thank you

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have three SATA hard drives :
Main system/boot drive , WD Caviar Black 1 TB, connected to the SATA 0 port
A backup drive, identical WD Caviar Black 1 TB, connected to the SATA 1 port
Another dirve, Hitachi 1 TB, connected to the SATA 2 port
When I installed Win 7, only the main drive was connected... and it remains the only drive with active/system/boot partitions.

QUESTION 1.
All three drives reporr correctly in the BIOS, and in the right order, but why is it that only one of the drive (the one on SATA port 1) has a "SATA:" prefix and the others have a "HDD:" prefix ?

QUESTION 2,
Why is it that the assignment of Disk #0, 1, 2 ( as seen in Disk Maanger or DiskPart) does not seem to have nay rhyme or reason?

I would have expected:

- the hardrive connected to SATA port O, to be assigned as Disk 0
- the hardrive connected to SATA port 1, to be assigned as Disk 1
- the hardrive connected to SATA port 2, to be assigned as Disk 2

but instead, I have:

- the hardrive connected to SATA port 2, is assigned as Disk 0
- the hardrive connected to SATA port 0, is assigned as Disk 1
- the hardrive connected to SATA port 1, is assigned as Disk 2

Just curious why that is.

I am assuming there is no way to chagne this. Its not something I would dream of reinstalling Windows 7 to correct ( even if it did correct it).

A:SATA port numbers vs assignemnt of Disk numbers/

Best advice, leave it alone. It may bother your (and others) sense of order but it won't affect how anything works, and no re-installing Windows won't change it.

Hello! We have gotten two new lenovo Laptops, model is ThinkPad T560 (20FH-001QUS). We are having issues with restarting them when we have our Imprivata badge readers plugged into them. When they are plugged into the laptop and you reboot the laptop gets stuck at the Lenovo logo at BIOS. If you unplugg them and reboot then it works fine and boots into windows. We tried booting to the BIOS and then plugging them in but it kills the keyboard and you have to unplug the badge reader and restart before the keyboard works again. We are thinking it is an IRQ issue, does anybody know if there is an way to manually change the IRQ numner if possible on this new laptop? Thanks!

A:add more hard disk or change it from letters to numbers

It is not possible to have more than 26 mounted drives. If access to more filesystems than this is required, Volume Mount Points must be used. However, it is possible to mount non-letter drives, such as 1:, 2:, or !: using the command line subst utility in Windows XP or Vista (i.e. "subst 1: c:\temp"), but this is not officially supported and may break programs that assume that all drive letters are A-Z.

Hey everybody.

I don't know if the title is a good one for this problem, but here goes.

I have a column that has numbers in this format: 54321-1234

Now, I want to take off the last 4 numbers, and the dash, from all the numbers in the column, using a formula. So that the output would be: 54321.

I want it so the first 5 numbers stay the same, but the dash and last 4 are gone. Is this possible?

Thanks.

The sequence of the numbers attributed to each call are odd. The first call has a higher number than later calls and the last two are also out of order. I am not sure if this is the right forum but i am desperate for some help. The transcripts are VERY important and I cannot be sure that they are the real deal because of the callID numbers. Is there a registry fix to force the operating system to cancel port numbers where devices are no longer detected, thus enabling new allocations to be in a sensible range of numbers

Welcome apivin to the windows 7 forums.

You might help by filling out the system spec's on your system.

Also, Is your problem that the program your trying to run requires a com port higher than 7?

You can in most cases, in your system configuration rename the com port to a higher number.

I have a basic Excel spreadsheet that I use as an order form.

When I type a whole number into the quantity box and hit enter, it transforms into a two-place decimal number:

5 becomes .05

This happens no matter how many times I try to reformat the cell. It happens if I open Word and insert a spreadsheet into a document.

Something simple, or supernatural?

Hi folks,

My Windows 7 desk cant connect to my websites plesk login page. There are a couple different port numbers I can use to get to the page but none work:
http://www.mysites.com:8880
https://www.mysites.com:8443
I tried in Firefox, Chrome and IE, all have the same problem:
Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at mysites.com:8443.

I have no problem getting to http://www.mysites.com. The site is up.

Then I tried using my netbook which runs XP and connects from my network, and I can get to http://www.mysites.com:8880 without a problem. So that makes me think its not my ISP or my router, the problem lies with my desktop.

I turned off the Windows firewall, Antispyware and AVG and am trying to run as minimal programs are possible but still cannot connect to webpages with non standard ports.

Does anyone have suggestions to what might be causing the problem?

Thanks,

Kris

Is there any way to fix this by changing the pdf numbering or is there any workaround?

After adding two new SATA hard drives in my computer, I noticed that Disk Management lists SATA Drive C (which contains Win 7) as Disk 2. The other two drives are listed as Disk 0 and Disk 1.

Since I connected SATA Drive C in SATA port 1, I was expecting to see it listed as Disk 0. SATA drives D and E are connected to SATA port 2 and 3 but are listed before the one connected in SATA port 1. Weird!

And since the computer seems to work fine, I'm wondering if the disk numbers listed in Disk Management matter at all? Please let me know if this is normal or if I should change something.

Thanks!

When initially booting into XP system and going to computer/properties/manage/disk mgr, it showed XP on 0, data on 1 and Win7 on 2. Booting into Win7 and doing the same, the disks were listed as the same, i.e. XP = Win7 = actual physical cable layout. However, on a number of occassions booting into Win7, the drives can be in any order. Machine works and boots OK, guess they are using virtual drives. Rebooted then went to update the model number off the bootable utility. I entered the model number, Updated, and Rebooted again. Still having the same issue. The model number didn?t record after I punched it in. I am still able to POST and get into the BIOS configuration. The system will not load an OS or boot off a CD into something like Windows PE.I'm not sure if Windows not being able to load is due to the BIOS or not but I'm inclined to think so since I have trouble booting off CD. Regardless, is there anything I can do to fix this?  I sold this unit to my client from our store here in Cleveland and the unit is about 5 months out-of-warranty.I would hate to have to sell this guy a Motherboard after roughly a year and a half.  Thanks, any help is appreciated. If I don't get a reply I will most likely be calling Lenovo Directly.  - Cory

Hello, This functionality has never worked, even when new.  Lenovo Vantage tells me my S/N is invalid and then gives me a different BIOS value every time I run the program.  I suspect this is why the Update functionality doesn't detect anything new for my device (I can see newer drivers on the website).  Also, the auto-detect on the website does not work either.  The Automatic Driver Update scan fails (An error occurred while downloading packages.).  There's another place on the site that lets me try something, I forget where.  That didn't work either because it couldn't recognize my device. Is there anything I can do to get this functionality to work?  I don't want to factory reset the device just to try this, especially since it never worked before.  Worst case is that I'll manually apply the drivers--and there probably won't be any more new ones going forward--but that's annoying. Thanks

Hi all,

I have a problem with MS-Word that I just can't seem to crack on my own so I was hoping that maybe someone over here had a clue what the right angle on this one may be:

I have pricelists of my company's products in a usual .doc-file. Mainly because I couldn't get the layout proper in Excel and mounting .xls in a .doc makes it way too heavy...
Anyway, prices need to be increased a bit and since these are quite extensive lists, re-calculating and changing every single price would be a lot of work so I was hoping to do this automated, like increase every price by 5% or so.
I tried to make a macro that finds numbers by looking for something like " ##,##" and I think I can make this work, but how on earth can I get Word to change that value??

I know, I know, I should have done this in .xls but that would be a serious pain to do it all over in Excel... Any thoughts on this matter?

Thanx in advance !

It's 204 pin, but you need to know more than that.

That's a Lenovoe Ideapad Y550. I entered that make and model into the configurator at Crucial.com and it came back with the following compatible RAM choices for that laptop.

Computer memory upgrades for Lenovo IdeaPad Y550 (All Types) Laptop/Notebook from Crucial.com

3 of those choices are for 2 GB sticks.

You can shop for those same Crucial part numbers from your source or buy 204 pin RAM from another brand as long as it has the exact same specifications.

First message was for $55, next one dated 7-6-03 is for $155 and says Item purchased SS005KA (see attachment). When you click on attachment nothing happens. I checked my credit card file and nothing has been charged and I have never ordered anything online in months. So I know this is not legit.
I tried did a search on Joshua Hardware and it does not exist.
When I went back to the first order sent on 4-4-03 and clicked on the tracking number it took me to a page not found and there it had the ISP number so I clicked on it and it took me to a page that said" This domain has been temporarily disabled. To restore the domain, contact your Customer support Rep".

Hi all, I am running Vista and using PC Doctor for protection. I get pop-ups regularly that say a "Bad Website" is blocked??? All I get are the site numbers such as:

68.36.166.127

How can I determine if this website is necessary or if I should block it? I get 5- 10 of thses a day. I am afraid that if I block all of these, I may disable some programs. Is ther some way I can tell what these numbers are referring to?

I hear that soon we will all have a personnal ip number. IP version 4 or something similar? Is this a good thing?

A:IP Numbers

Where did you hear that?
There are too many people for individual IPv4 numbers. IPv6 could do. But I still doubt that.
It's a Bad Thing if something like this happens.

What is an (Internet) IP number, and how unique is it. Does each Internet user have an unique IP number?

For each message posted, why is it necessary for this site to log IP numbers, which are inaccessible even to the poster?
