Unknown Bitlocker Password and No Bitlocker Recovery Key Question

Q: Unknown Bitlocker Password and No Bitlocker Recovery Key Question

Hello and good afternoon, I have a issue where a manager started the Bitlocker process on the SD card in his Surface Pro 3

with Windows 8.1. The Bitlocker attempt failed at 3.4% completed but the SD card ended up being Bitlocked without providing the Bitlocker Recovery Key (I've never seen this happen before). He doesn't know the password for the SD card and of course
I've been tasked to somehow release the encryption so that he can get the required information off of the SD card.

Is there anything that can be done to release the encryption on the SD card or has the SD card been made non-accessible moving forward?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Am super frustrated and would appreciate any help.   ThinkPad X1 6th Gen has been dead more than a week;  OS crashed, but several reboot and repair efforts failed.  Tried system restore.  That required a bitlocker key (which I found online) but then the machine would not accept my account password.  So unable to restore.    Multiple calls with Thinkpad warranty support (hardware and software) could provide no help or guidance.  (Except to send restoration media.)  Mind-boggling lack of support... and no way to escalate issue to someone who actually understood it.  Deeply disappointing experience w/ Lenovo. . So now the question is how -- after I reset my system -- do I avoid this nonsense in the future?   I shouldn't have to rebuild my laptop from scratch anytime there is an OS problem.  BTW, I did not order bitlocker, set up bitlocker or create any password for it.  Do not need it or want it.    Can anyone help with advice on how to set up my machine without it? Thanks.

I have an older Laptop that operates on  Windows 7 Ultimate,I have the Bitlocker Drive Encryption on and encrypted for Drive C:   I now started the process of encrypting my external usb hdd Drive E: which has a long way to go for it's large

Drive Encryption Password screen like normal just like on my Windows 7 laptop so I enter the password and it was correct and it began the encryption process again. When I finished with what I needed to do on the Windows 10 laptop I paused the encryption again
and disconnected the drive. I am now back on my Windows 7 Ultimate OS and plugged the drive in, Bitlocker Encryption Password Screen comes up again and I entered my password but now for some reason it's saying the password is incorrect?  "But It's
not incorrect",is there a reason why this has happen and a way to fix it? My second issue is that I have the recovery key written down on paper but on the fifth line of the eight lines that makes the recovery key I left out a number, did not write it correctly,

Hi
After rebooting one of our test machines, bitlocker wanted the recovery key.
There were no hardware modifications on that machine.
Error message in event log:
Bootmgr failed to obtain the bitlocker volume master key from the TPM because the PCRs did not match
Event id 24635, source bitlocker-driver
Each time the machine starts, the recovery key is needed.
Any idea how to solve that issue and why it happens?
update:
Second partition was created manually on that machine. So that's clear that bitlocker reacts...
But now: how can I confirm those changes so that the recovery key is not needed each time we boot?

A:Bitlocker enabled drive, recovery key needed during boot, PCS did not match, event id 24635, source bitlocker-driver

Hi,

I would like to confirm if BitLocker accepts the recovery key?

Please update the BIOS to improve the stability for TPM first.

I also would like to suggest you disable and enable BitLocker again to reset the settings.

I have activated Bitlocker on two identical W8.1 pro machines, and on the first (C1) I have the option to use a password when logging into the computer, but the other (C2) only ask for the recovery key from USB stick. Both computers have no TPM, so Bitlocker is enabled without TPM, but this should give the possibility to start the computers using a password on 8.1 pro.

Can I somehow add a password to C2, or is my only option to remove the Bitlocker encryption and try again?

Hello,
I have a few related questions around BitLocker and TPM.  But first some background, I have Windows 8.1, I have BitLocker turned on, and I have my BitLocker Recovery Key.  I did not manually
initialize the TPM.  I don't recall ever having a TPM Owner password.  But I do see that I can auto generate one, although I have not tried.
1) Is the BitLocker Recovery Key the same thing as the TPM Owner Password?
2) I don't recall ever being provided the TPM owner password during the BitLocker setup?  Where would I find it?  I chose the option to save the BitLocker Recovery Key to my Microsoft Account, but I don't see any TPM Owner Password?
3) I have read that in some Windows OS systems the TPM is automatically initialized, but the TPM Owner Password is not retain where a user can find it.  Is it best practice to even try to obtain the TPM Owner Password if it is indeed not retained on
my machine for user viewing.
I have already spent several hours reading many of your technet articles.  All very helpful, but I did not see any that specifically addressed my specific situation.
4) I am assuming that it would be best if I obtained the TPM Owner password.  Is that not necessarily true?
Thanks

Dear Sir/Madam,

I encrypted my laptop system drive using Bitlocker. I remembered the password but forgot to backup the Recovery Key.

Usually, the system will be bootup without asking for the Bitlocker password or Recovery key. But one day, when booting up the sytem, the "BitLocker recovery" blue screen pop up to ask for Bitlocker Recovery Key.

I forgot to backup the Recovery Key. But I remembered the password. I also connected the harddisk of this laptop to other PC, and tried to unlock the hard disk using Bitlocker password. But there is no password option to unlock the hard disk.

Is it possible to unlock the drive using Bitlocker password?

Thank you.

Anyone.... please help me with this one if able.   My computer (HP Envy w/Windows 8) had been working fine for years.  The main drive (C: drive) was bitlocker encrypted.  I did not do any recent upgrades, patches, or installs.  Then yesterday,
I turned on my computer and I got the initial "enter bitlocker password" screen.  However, this time the computer screen was not the solid blue color.  The screen was malfunctioning and had some purple color along the left side and some
screen flickering.  Therefore, I entered my bitlocker password I did so as I've done hundreds of time and it didn't work.  The next screen took me to the bitlocker recovery page.  When I put in my bitlocker recovery key, the screen when to the
initial windows screen and the screen said "attempting to repair."  Then, the process stops, and I get back to the initial blue, "enter bitlocker password."  It doesn't matter how many times I put in the correct bitlocker passwork
or recovery key, I still inevitably does but to the enter bitlocker password screen.  I even went to the DOS prompt and used the Bitlocker Recovery Tool and completed the steps to recover the drive.  When I insert the correct key, the process begins
to run, I get kicked out of the dos prompt, the screen goes back to "attempting to repair" page, then eventually back to the blue enter bitlocker password page.

I just started using BitLocker on a Windows7 Computer and am confused about one specific aspect of recovering data drives. I have read through the tutorials on here but I can't seem to find anywhere that explicitly states if this is possible or not.

From this link: Regain access to a computer locked by BitLocker Drive Encryption

I see the statement that "To unlock the drive and regain access to your files, you will need the BitLocker recovery password. If you also encrypted data drives, you will need to have access to the drive that Windows is installed on as well."

My question is if my OS drive dies, will the data drives be recoverable with the password and/or recovery key?

I am not currently in such a situation but I would like to prepare for all possibilities. Since a TPM is needed to store the encryption keys on for the OS drive (I just ordered one but have not encrypted my OS drive yet), are the encryption keys for the data drives are stored on the OS drive itself and this is the issue?

Most of the things I find on Google when trying to search about this issue discuss recovering a data drive that is failing, not a data drive that is in good health but does not have access to the system drive. Can anyone say definitively if this is possible, or do I need to be prepared to lose all data on data drives if my system drive crashes?

A:BitLocker Encrypted Data Drive Recovery Question

Based upon what I have read, your data drives will be UNRECOVERABLE if your OS drive dies. I would consider setting up a RAID 5 array for your OS drive for redundancy, this way if one drive dies, all you have to do is replace it and the missing data pieces will be recreated.

I know a BIOS update on my Latitude with Windows 8 and Bitlocker activated on the O/S drive triggers Bit locker recovery on startup. I don't have the recovery key and so am stuck. How to recover without the Bit Locker recovery key?

A:BIOS update without suspending Bitlocker has triggered a recovery and on start up I am prompted for the recovery key

The solution I found was to install the previous version of the BIOS, but without being able to boot into Windows, I needed to install the previous version of the BIOS in DOS. Some server products provide a F12 boot up menu option to roll back a BIOS update, but this is not available in my Latitude.

I downloaded the correct BIOS version (the additional info section made specific reference to it being installable from Windows or DOS). I prepared a bootable USB key (to a dos prompt) and copied the bios installer executable to the memory stick.

Because secure boot (UEFI) is enabled, it is not possible to boot up from USB key, so legacy boot mode needs to be enabled. There were 3 settings that required changing in the BIOS before I was able to boot from the USB key.

Once I was able to boot into DOS from the USB key and got to the DOS prompt, I ran the BIOS update exe. The laptop rebooted, installed the previous BIOS version and then rebooted again. I pressed F2 to get into the BIOS and changed back the settings as they were (secure boot UEFI). I then managed to boot into windows without being prompted for the Bit locker recovery key.

You able to export or view the Bitlocker recovery key by going to Control Panel -> Security -> Bit locker Management, and temporarily suspend protection (until the next reboot). It is possible to run a commandlet to specify the number of reboots bit locker should be suspended for.

You may find that installing the previous version of the ... Read more

Initially I found that BitLocker on the Go supported removable media like flash drives and external drives. Why isn't a CD/DVD supported since it is considered removable media? Will this support be available in future releases?

Hi,

Bitlocker to Go is not supported on CD/DVD. Your suggestion is valuable, I will forward this information to the appropriate department through our internal channel.
Both the Microsoft Product Team and Development Team will take into consideration all suggestions and feedback for future releases.

Currently, you may need third party software to encrypt CD/DVD.

Hello @pcsl, Welcome back to the HP Support forum. Thank you for your post. BitLocker is a Microsoft software designed to protect your PC against offline attacks, unauthorized access typically if your PC gets stolen. BitLocker is full disk encryption software. More info:>> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitLocker>> http://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-bitlocker-encryption-windows-10 BitLocker was activated by someone and during the activation time it prompts the user to save/store the key in a safe place. If this is company owned asset/PC, you should turn to your company's IT support guys and they should be able to provide you with the recovery key. If this is your own device, most probably you use a slightly different BitLocker version for certain PCs and tablets known as Device encryption. Probably your key is stored in Microsoft OneDrive with your Microsoft account here :>> https://onedrive.live.com/recoverykey More info>> https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2015/12/microsoft-may-have-your-encryption-key-heres-...>> http://windowsitpro.com/microsoft-surface/locating-your-microsoft-surface-bitlocker-recovery-key>> http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/21433-bitlocker-recovery-unlock-drive-windows-8-a.html Please, note that it is very important for security reasons that you keep the encryption key (Bitlocker key) in a secure place so that only you know it. Let me know if this works for you ... is giving me a hard time.

1. Made the C drive the first boot device

2. Paused bitlocker, rebooted and resumed.

3. Removed Encryption. Rebooted and encrypted again.

4. Downgraded TPM to 1.2 from 2.0

A:Bitlocker recovery key

The point of drive encryption is to kept unauthorized people out of the computer.  HERE IS A MICROSOFT document about the subject.  Be sure to read the "I don't have a key.  What else can I do?"

Hi,

I have a new Windows 8.1 machine and I wish to encrypt the drive using Bitlocker. It gives me 4 options to save a recovery key
1. Save to your Microsoft account
2. Save to a USB flash drive
3. Save to a file
4. Print the recovery key

Option 1 isn't available as I'm logged on using a local account.
i. What is the difference between options 2 & 3? i.e. I could save to a file on a USB drive
ii. Does option 2 mean the USB flash drive cannot then be used for other purposes?
iii. Does option 2 also mean I could use a USB external hard drive, or does it have to be a flash drive?
iv. Once the recovery key has been created, can the key then be copied to other locations or is it only going to work where Bitlocker puts the key?
v. Just thinking about printing the recovery key - can this be used without a password to access the drive, how sensitive/important is the printed key?

N00b questions, I'd very much appreciate your answers.

Thanks

A:Bitlocker recovery key

hello and welcome to eight forms , my opinion , difference between 2 and 3 ,2 will create a file and put it on the flash drive for yah,3 you will have to move the file it creates to a flash drive of external drive manually 'I would think you could take the file it create and put it where ever you want , I don't use bitlocker ,if I did I would print it and put away for safe keeping ,like I try to do will all passwords .and if the drive is pass worded that you store the file on ,then yes someone would need the drive password to access the files on that drive, is not that what passwords are for ,I would assume that there are people who could hack your passwords like they do others ,good luck
