MSI P45 Platinum doesn't wake after sleeping, hard reboot required

Q: MSI P45 Platinum doesn't wake after sleeping, hard reboot required

Hi guys, (first post here )... I was highly impressed with some of the deeply technical answers on this site, so I'm hoping someone can help me narrow down to the cause of this issue I have, and possibly help me learn something about system software and firmware

So some time ago I acquired this MSI P45 platinum third-hand, and it has been living up to its name. However, it does not sleep and wake up properly.

To be specific, it looks like it sleeps properly, but doesn't wake up properly. The lights and fans start up, but one of 2 things happen

1) the POWER LED doesn't light up, only the HDD LED (strange)
2) the POWER LED lights up, the HDD LED doesn't work

Either way, no display. or any activity I can cause through the keyboard. I'm on BIOS 1.7b14(official Beta BIOS) (A7512IMS.17E). It didn't work with 1.6(official release) either. It doesn't seem to be any known bug.

I've tried a bunch of things, but I would like to try steps systematically once again, in case I've missed some combination. So, what could be the issue, and what can I check?

Preferred Solution: MSI P45 Platinum doesn't wake after sleeping, hard reboot required

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello everyone!

The title is meant to be a question, but I ran out of characters.

Firstly, I'm running both a Windows 10 and a Linux Mint. As per the default settings, if I turn on my laptop and don't touch it, it boots up Linux, I have to interact to boot to Windows. I usually use Windows, though.

Yesterday, I left home around 4.30 PM, put my laptop to sleep (as the other option was update & shut down, and I didn't feel like doing that). I came home at about 4-5 AM and noticed my laptop was awake (albeit with the screen off), and Linux was up and running. Since nobody at home touched it, the only way this is possible if it woke up from sleep (with Windows running), reboot and automatically boot up Linux. But this still doesn't answer why would this happen.

So can an automatic reboot to install updates wake up a sleeping device, in order to reboot? If yes, is there any way I can disable it? And if it can't, does anyone have a guess as to why did this happen?

Thanks in advance!

It's not clear to me what 'Wake by Thunderbolt' (hereafter WbT) does and whether or not it's required for 'Wake On LAN' (hereafter WOL).  In the T470s and T480s user guides, there's no mention that WbT is required for WOL so I'm thinking it's not.  But then again, since Ethernet is in the dock itself, and seeing how there are controls for PXE, I could see how it might be required. ReferencesT470s User GuideT480s User Guide

Windows XP Computer, Q9650 3GHx, 2.96 GB Ram, Memmory 4 GB, 1 T drive has never been the same since my mother clicked on a link in her aol email while visiting my office. My PC tools picked up the virus and I got rid of it, but the computer is supper slow.....freezes when I leave on overnight mostly to do maintenance.......sometimes during the day I have to shut off if I try to do very many tasks at the same time.......I have been putting up with this for 3 months.....but it has gotten worse. I've tried the following: Chkdsk - no errors, defragged (Perfect Disk), PC Tools Virus Scan, used PC Tools Registry Mechanic - but it kept screwing up my Netextender VPN logins, so I uninstalled Registry Mechanic and purchased Uniblue Power Suite - Registry Booster, SpeedupMyPC, Driver Scanner. I have been updating windows...and my drivers are up to date. The computer is running faster (not normal) but still needing to hard reboot from freezes......mainly because I have searchindexer off. I do regular scans with PC Tools. Before Uniblue, I kept having a lot more processes running. I have searched the internet for each item in my startup, and started searching all the running processes.......and found I might be infected with something through the svchost.exe and also BDTUpdateService.exe Short of switching all the software I use for business onto my new Windows 7 Computer........I started trying to resolve this computers problems and found hope by reading some of your posts... I recently (about 4-5 months ago, so not very recently) upraded my system to Windows 7 64bit from Vista. Ever since then my computer has had issues where it locks up completely (unable to move the mouse, whatever sound was playing at the time loops) and a hard reboot is required in order to bring it back to order.

It usually wasn't a huge problem before, but for some reason it willl now proceed to lock-up within about 30-40 seconds of booting up the computer, after the desktop loads. I tried disconnecting my second hard-drive (I had bought a new one to install W7 on, and kept the old one plugged in) but that didn't make a difference.

It seems to boot fine in safemode, but I have no idea what the problem could be.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I upgraded my system to Windows 8 32bit from Windows 7. Prior to the upgrade my computer had issues where it would occasionally lock up completely (not responding to any keys even Ctrl-Alt-Del and unable to move the mouse) and a hard Shut Down (i.e. holding the Power Button down for a few seconds) was required in order to bring it back to life.

It wasn't a huge problem before as it only happened once a week or so, but for some reason it now locks up within 30-40 seconds of booting every time I power up the laptop following a Proper Shut Down procedure ever since upgrading to Win8. The odd thing is that it's okay following the power off hard shutdown but does it again after another proper shut down (either by closing the lid or clicking on Settings/Power/Shut Down)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

After checking all the settings, upload any new crash dump files along with the complete SF_Diagnostic_Tool files.

Any ideas how to solve this?

I am wondering about some issues I am having that I am puzzled by and am hoping someone could help out. About a week ago my computer froze up, didn't think much of it, just cold rebooted it and away I went, no issues for about a week. Last night when I got home, same thing, this time when I rebooted I did a reset instead, and upon this my computer could not find the bootable hard drive. I decided to cold reboot it and sure enough, came back up. Since this time, about every 45 minutes or so, it does the same thing. Cold reboots are the only way to bring it back up.

The computer was put together in November by me (probably issue #1, see my user specs for PC info) That being said, the two hard drives (if those are issues) would possibly be the SSD (Boot drive) or the 500GB Seagate (older hard drive, also stores all my installed programs).

1. The could not find boot drive is a simple red flag to my SSD. But when I cold reboot its fine and monitoring it all checks out ok.
2. The 500GB drive seems to have a corrupted portion on it, but it boots normal and lasts for 45 minutes or so. I have not tried chcdsk yet, plan to tonight.
3. As far as I know my PSU, CPU, Memory and GPU are fine. I plan to run a 12+ hour memtest tonight but my CSU passed intelburn tests, and GPU passes FURMark and memtestg and although I don't have a voltage reader, via BIOS my power isn't spiking at all

How about doing us a favor an putting your specs into your System Specs?

Follow this procedure please:
Update your SevenForums System Specs
User CP (located on the top menu bar) |
Your Profile | Edit System Spec (left-hand column)

To gather info, use Speccy (my favorite) or SIW or System Info

ADD the word laptop or desktop or netbook to the
“system manufacturer” block, for example,
Toshiba Satellite L305D notebook.

Provide full windows version info, for example:
MS Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit

Use the “Other Info” block for Optical Reader,
Mouse, touchpad, wifi adapter, speakers, monitor, etc

Scroll down and click on SAVE CHANGES.

Now my old eyes can't handle that small typeface.

Would you post a short post, in normal size typeface which states the problem and the problem only?

After recently installing an SSD in my notebook, I have been experiencing regular freezes that always end in a hard reboot. There is also no option in the bios to change from ACSI to IDE as some online articles have suggested to fix the problem.  Side notes:A clone of the system was made to the SSD via a cloning tool prior to installation of a resetted and updated windows 8.1.HDD worked without system freezes but was slow and had a long response time due to how many write cycles it's been through. All drivers have been updated and including updates through windows update.Multiple fresh copies of windows 10 also had the freezing issues. Also just before the computer hangs the drive increases to 100% usage but with no read or write happening.  This is just very puzzling to me and I'm not sure what to do.

What does the power button do? Wake it up, Resume Windows, or cold boot? I'm wondering if it is
actually going into hibernation. It might be worth double checking your power plan, which
probably includes HP's extensions. Is this a desktop? (That's what the model number brings up.)

This sounds like a freeze up, not a response to a power state transition. Check the Windows

I was on FB, shut lid to laptop and came back to it after eating supper. The computer acted frozen. Then it said no connection. Sometimes we do have to turn our U-Verse off and try again so I did. Still nothing so I shut down by holding my finger on the shut off button for a few seconds. When I turned it back on the first of 3 screens came up and I swiped on my touch screen and it did go to the second screen where I put my pin in. It pops up HP with the thinking circle then goes to the third screen which is a black or sleeping screen. I had family and friends give advice....We have tried taking out the battery and using just the power cord, didn't help. A friend tells me the third screen has gone into sleep mode and something is running in the background. He doesn't know how to wake the screen so we can use task master to shut down running programs. He also says when We shutdown it is not completely turning off. He googled and did say it has been a problem sometimes with update......I just want to try and figure out how to wake up the screen so I can work on the other issues. Thanks.

A:Can Remote Desktop wake a sleeping computer?

RD will not wakeup ur network card  but you can use this solution
Wake On LAN from hibernate or off mode
One way to do this is the following.

Check whether the network adapter on the target computer supports Wake On LAN. Enable the function in the network adapter settings or in any special management program that came with it. If the network adapter is integrated on the motherboard, enable Wake On LAN in the motherboard BIOS.
Download and install WakeOnLanGui from www.depicus.com.
On the target computer, i.e. the one to be woken up, open a command line window and enter the command: ipconfig /all
Note the physical address (sometimes called MAC = Media Access Control address) of your Ethernet adapter from the ipconfig output. Example: 00-E0-18-90-A5-44
Run WakeOnLanGui on the computer from which you want to wake the other computer and type the physical address into the proper field in WakeOnLanGui. The other two fields are filled with, and the port is 7 or actually any other port. Port 9 is sometimes used.
Shut down the computer to be waked.
Test WakeOnLanGui.

I like to use my computer as an entertainment center (which just means late night Netflix/Toonami streaming). I have my computer go to sleep after 3 hours of inactivity so my TV can turn off which makes sure nothing has been on ALL night. But, this only works sometimes. My computer is sometimes unresponsive when I try to take it out of sleep. When I try to wake it, the computer starts up but doesn't display anything. I have tried unplugging the HDMI but that causes the computer to blue screen. I know that my GPU is the reason why I can't use the "ultra-fast" startup option but that can be easily fixed (I am just to lazy/busy to email Nvidia). I have noticed this waking problem can be triggered by initially waking my computer then letting it go back to sleep and when I press the "pc power" button on my Logitech wireless keyboard(which puts my computer to sleep and not off/on) but I have no idea as to what that means. Hello Forum Members,

Although everything is correctly installed with all the proper cables, I can't get any sound from the headphones when they're plugged into the 1/4" phone jack. Neither can I get anything to record using the front end MIC jack. I'm using a Radio Shack PZM microphone. since it uses a AA battery, I'm assuming that the microphone is of the "dynamic" type.

Hello all. I just bought a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum for my Athlon XP 1800+ box running Windows XP Home edition.

I followed all of the instructions like it said...not letting Windows install the drivers, to putting it into the second PCI slot.

Actually, I started in a different PCI slot because I had a dilemma. I have a firewire card that NEEDS to be in slot 1. I also have a ATA card that NEEDS to be in 1 or 2. So at first, I put it the Audigy in PCI 4. I installed the drivers and then rebooted my system. I got all of the software but when I went to turn the volume up it said "Cannot detect any Creative Labs Sound Blaster Products. Try Reinstalling the software."

So, I reinstalled the software, and rebooted. Still nothing. I ran the diagnostic. I failed everything except the detection of the card. Wav, MIDI, etc...they all failed.

So then, I made a sacrafice. I took out my firewire card because the SB Audigy 2 Platnium has 2 firewire ports on it anyway, so I thought I could just use those. So, I put the sound card in PCI slot 2 like it says to. I start up my machine again and then everything is going slow. I try to get into the setup program, the "Run" command keeps freezing. I try it through "My Computer"...freezing.

I will attempt to call Creative Labs at 9 when they open...but I thought I might get an answer quicker and better here.

Oh, I also forgot to mention that while uninstalling the software I got a couple of STOP messages... Read more

Hi there,

I've had problems with my HP laptop ever since I got it with it shutting down after 2-3 hours of sleeping. Not a battery issue since it still happens while plugged into mains. Also, whenever I try to hibernate, it shuts down instead.

When I turn it on again after it shuts down (regardless of sleep or hibernation), it says (paraphrased) "Windows was not shut down correctly, please choose: Normal boot, Safe Boot, etc." I've searched google and these forums but to no avail.

Any suggestions on where to start looking for a solutions?! I'd like to avoid a re-installation if I can...

Anybody has a solution to make the remote works again in windows 7 ?

thank you as much.

A:Creative SB X-Fi Platinum Fatal1ty Remote doesn't work

Seems like an interesting piece of hardware there.

Yes. I have an idea.

Right click on the remote device in device manager. Properties. Details tab. Change dropdown to hardware ids. Copy and paste results here. I could possibly locate a driver for it using that information.

You can place a shortcut to the software you want to open with Windows in your user folder, under start menu, startup folder.

Here's the location:

C:\Users\{YOUR_USER_NAME_HERE}\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

If you want the software to open with Windows for all accounts, add the shortcut to here instead:

C:\Users\All Users\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

I'll try to be as detailed yet succinct as possible. I have a laptop with a busted screen i'm using currently to host my media remotely with ORB, and I've been able to use WOL through the mycast.orb.com interface to be able to wake computer remotely after it enters sleep.

just got a MAC and need a windows program for work, so i decided to set up Remote Desktop. I'd set it up years ago just to prove I could do it for myself, but my internet upload speeds were never feasible to justify daily use until i got Verizon FiOs. So, got everything to work fine over LAN, then got everything to work from outside LAN by using a Dynamic Update Client from no-ip.com that updates my external IP changes when running on my host computer.

PROBLEM: Trying to save power by letting computer go into standby after 30 min or so, but everytime it goes into standby I cannot login again through my RDP client on my MAC at work. I'm at work so I haven't been able to go on the host computer and look. I've been researching about magic packet and all those options, but i'm not sure if I even need those.

My setup:

Host computer:

Dell1505 1.86 T2400 intel dual core
2.5 GB RAM
Latest ORB client 3.0 or something (note date of my post)
Windows XP MCE SP3
Client computer: macbook air late 2010 model

What works:
Remote desktop over LAN
Wake on LAN through RDP over LAN
RDP remotely with help of no-ip.com Dynamic Update Client so long as its running in system tray

Every time I turn on my PC, I get to the XP password page but the screen is frozen and I can't type in my password. I have to turn off and on again, and it then unfreezes and allows me to enter my password and proceed to my desktop.

This happens every time without fail and is incredibly annoying, as you can imagine. Any ideas why this is happening and possible solutions?

This can be a sign of an infection or malware

Hi, about 2 months ago I had a serious computer problem - black screen of death, etc.
I am using Windows XP professional with Service Pack 3.
I repaired it by reinstalling windows using the "Repair" option - I wanted to avoid having to reinstall all of my software and spending countless hours adjusting my settings, and getting things to how they used to be before.
To further avoid problems, I bought the Uniblue Powersuite which has 3 programs - registry cleaner, driver scanner, and speed up my PC (system tweaker). I don't know how useful these are, but I don't know enough to do this maintenance myself - I think cleaning the registry and making sure your drivers are up to date could be important.
Also, I downloaded HijackThis, and I generated a log file which I will paste below.

So what are my problems? The computer often needs to be rebooted after I first start it up, because the screen will start flashing a "blip" of white every couple seconds, and program functions / menus / mouse will become unresponsive. It may have something to do with having deleted a "Monitor helper" program under device manager. I think it resolved the black screen of death, and I thought it would reinstall the monitor helper when I reinstalled the drivers for my monitor and video card. But I don't see that monitor helper program there anymore. Also, I switched to using Google Chrome for my browser, because IE caused my computer to crash. I used to use IE ... Read more

A:Reboot required

Well, maybe I should call the thread "Flashing screen, unresponsive software, reboot required."
I hope someone replies to this thread, I keep having the problem and I didn't used to.
Basically, on first boot, I get the flashing screen soon after boot-up into Windows XP. Or after I try to run a program or open a browser. Then I have to push the reboot button on the computer case, because nothing else responds. Please help me fix this problem. Thank you.

Hello Bleeping Computer,
Yesterday my machine was infected with Live Security Platinum. I appear to have successfully removed the rogue AV program after following the BC guide using MBAM (although I initially struggled to uninstall the program in Control Panel - nothing happened when i clicked 'Uninstall' - it has now disappeared from my program list though)
However, I've been left with a few issues:
1. On reboot all my desktop icons rearrange themselves on the LHS of the screen in alphabetical order. Auto-arrange is not checked. This is workable but annoying...
2. Periodically IE9 redirects to something like a googleads or adclick address. Once it asked me to click on a picture of a 'fire'?! I just closed the window...
3. Windows Firewall is disabled and I can't re-enable it - Error message: 'Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings. Error code 0x80070424'
4. AVG seemed to have been disabled so I've now uninstalled and reinstalled
5. AVG Resident Shield keeps indicating a Trojan horse Dropper.Generic_c.MMI in c:/Windows/System32/services.exe
6. Ran MBAM again overnight after removing Live Security Platinum and it's still picking up a few things. Currently it's quarantined the items in the attached JPEG:

I'm running Windows 7 64-bit so didn't run the GMER log as instructed. DDS.txt log is below, and Attach.txt attached.

Would appreciate any help on this matter.

For the last few years I've been living with a problem that I thought was hardware related. I just installed a new hard drive and I still have the problem!

Every time the computer starts up it locks up in the Windows Loading screen before you see the logins. Everything just stops, but it is still on. Under no amount of time does it finish booting up. It must be restarted using the restart button to completely load. The restart button is successful 100% of the time. Why won't it load off the initial start up?

Windows XP Pro with and without SP1
8GB Seagate HD and the new 160 GB WD HD.
TYan motherboard. 256 RAM.
PIII 800 MHz processor.

A:required reboot on startup

Start in safe mode and enable logging.
Then you can later look at bootlog.txt to see if it gives some clues.

Hello, before I post the logs I will say what's going on. 1st: Sometimes when I boot up the computer, and after I log in as admin with a password, I get to the desktop, and the mouse works, but clicking isn't effective, either on icons in the desktop, in the tray, or in start menu. If I restart, it usually fixes this problem, but sometimes I have to reboot 3 or 4 times for it to work.
2nd: No one else uses this computer, and no one was even in the house this week, but a few days ago when I logged on I noticed the colors were different in the heading bars and tabs on the internet. 3rd: I just installed a webcam and am afraid it is easily compromised. Here are my logs. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE: I was looking at the registry and found this: InfoTip Play and Manage Games. Is that a virus?? I don't have any games other than solitaire.
I have also looked into this "SweetIM" thing, could that be whats causing the problem? i deleted them from registry. But I still think there's something wrong here. Thanks again.

Wake PC from sleep and it reboots everytime. Just noticed that theres a Kernel Power 41 event viewer log.
Anyone experience this issue?
I'm willing to guess it's the chipset drivers since everything else seems to check out fine for me.
Running on:

Phenom II X4 965 BE
Asus M4a89gtd pro/usb3
8GB Ram
Asus GTX470 vcard
850watt Corsair PSU.

Again, all drivers up to date except that chipset doesn't have Win 8 drivers yet (and maybe never will unless AMD gets on the ball). Have tinkered with all the memory settings I could just to be sure it wasn't the memory and it still wont matter (and sleep worked 100% in Win 7 64bit so that cant be the case).
Only issue I have had with Win 8 so far and actually loving it.

It's crashing because of a driver. If you run the tool as Admin and then post the zip it says to make, we'll figure it out easily:

Three various hardware complaints. I would run a system file check to verify the OS files and if the crashes continue we can start checking hardware.

I followed the Live Security Platinum Uninstall Guide on this site. In the end, Malwarebytes found the 3 scoundrels. But I can't connect to the internet. Well, to be more correct, the Local Area Connection shows me connected. To get to this point, I manually specified the ip information, since I couldn't get Winsock fixed, no matter what I did... various Fixit and http://seoroot.com/blog/networking/how-to-reset-winsock.html/ methodologies. The second issue is the firewall. I can't turn the Windows Firewall on or off. I can't access the settings at all. I downloaded the sharedaccess.reg fix suggested on another site and it got me a little further... the message now is that I have to start the ICS Service. Starting that service doesn't help and making it automatic start doesn't help. So, where do I go from here? Thanks

I was wondering if any one else has come up against this problem with Win 7 home premium.

This is one of the most annoying problems I've seen. I've replaced the hard drives, and adjusted the settings in my bios to support AHCI.

My system is includes Gigabyte EP45-UD3P motherboard, 8gb OCZ Platinum DDR2 1066 memory, Intel Q550 CPU, Dual Western Digital Raptor 300Gb drives in RAID configuration, EVGA GTX 295 graphics card. The system was overclocked, and now is running at stock speed to erase any doubt it was the issue.

The issue is I install Win 7 Pro, and everything works fine, until I power the system down, and turn it back on my Acer monitors LED light turns blue as if its going to the Windows login only the screen turns black, and hangs there indefinitely. The only solution that works is to repair the MBR with the Win 7 disc after hitting reset.

I have gone over everything that could be the issue. I have the original disc with drivers that came with the motherboard, I ran all Win updates, and they installed without an issue, the hard drives were replaced, and check disc was run. I replaced the CMOS battery. Every component I've had since bought new. I even have
the boxes to everything.

If I select restart in Windows, it powers up fine till you turn the power off then it's back to replacing the MBR. I have no special partitions, and let Windows allocate the drives with the typical 100mb partition during install.

I never experienced a similar problem. I assure any help with a solution is greatly appreciated.
Thank you to all who offer support.

Hi there, hope you can help,
My pc freezes, will not respond to controls, and has to be reset. The only common factor is that it happens whilst playing World of Tanks.
It isn't a frequently occurring problem - maybe once or twice a month. But I am worried that it is affecting my pc adversely.
I have checked my GPU temp, and it isn't showing any spikes or problems there that I can see.
Sorry if I am not providing much useful info to start with, but I'm somewhat of a novice to tech support forums.
Thanks in advance!

I recently installed Beyond Divinity, I game I had though I had lost years ago.

The installation went without a hitch until I reached a message saying:

"Application installed successfully. Reboot the computer to complete the installation. Continue?"

It shows the word "Confirmation" and the yes/no boxes above that.

Now normally this wouldn't seem like a problem, I'd just click yes and it'd reboot and I'd play BUT- I've already gone through this message box twice, and it doesn't seem to be changing anything.

I searched on Google for this, and got many different things but the answer seems to be unique to certain games and I couldn't find anything particular to Beyond Divinity.
